I finished the Boston Marathon yesterday. I was ahead of my goal for the first half but ran into trouble approaching the Newton Hills. I guess I still haven't worked out refueling issues. I'm a bit dissappointed in my 5:04 finish. However, I feel pretty healthy today, I went to work at my usual early hour and was quite busy. I'm heading back this evening to put together a couple of orders for Thursday because my Father-In-Law's funeral services are tomorrow.

I'm determined to keep up the training and solving the nutrition issues. My husband and I are seriously considering Philadelphia this coming November.

Congrats, SuzyQ! Great time!!

I signed up for a race on May 7th - Mayfaire 5K. I understand that for central Florida it has an unusual amount of hills. Guess I should do a little hill work.

A little late posting, but the Martian Invasion 5k race in Dearborn Michigan on April 2nd. Not only did I get my best ever time (28:45), but I was 5th in my age group of 49 people!

Sure felt great. I think the fast runners competed in the 10k or 1/2 and full Marathon they held that day too.

Hi everyone. I ran my first half marathon last weekend and did it in 2:02. I was happy with my results. I have a 5K this weekend for Autism and in 3 more weeks another half marathon. I finished my 14 mile run today - the longest I have ever ran and felt pretty good - legs sore a bit - but a good feeling all over. Good luck to everyone doing races this weekend. emoticon

I wonder if I can get everyone to run faster at the Blue Bell 10K if I yell in my best Patrick Star voice, "ICE CREAM!" the entire 6.2 miles? I have sped up to get out of earshot of annoying conversations. Could it work if I was the annoying one?

Heat and humidity do slow you down. The early start times & relatively short distances help. I would acclimate by running/ walking around the same time as the race starts (7:00 am). Drink before and after. Invest in a fuel belt or something that you can carry water with you on practice runs. Hopefully, the races have adequate water stations.

You came in at a very good time for your first 5K. Congratulations.

The local running club sponsors the Watermelon series, 4 5K runs during June, July, August, and Sept. They are at 7am, but here in central FL we are likely to have a lot of heat. I've only run one 5K so far and the temp was in the low 60's. I'm just not sure if I should take on the heat this early in my running. I'm also 61 years old which is a factor. I came in at 31:19 on my first 5K and really didn't train much for it, although I've been a regular exercisor including the elliptical for several years.

What experience have you had with heat and humidity? Any recommendations?

I ran the Shamrock Shuffle in Houston Rice Village yesterday 5K and I just signed up to run the Lookin Good Strut on 3/19 5k looking to get a time of 30min soon. Week before last was 38min this week was 37 min so I'm going to give it a hard effort on Saturday and see if I can drop 2min instead of just one.

Ran the Cowtown Ultra Marathon in Ft. Worth on Feb. 27. Ran 50K in 5:46:57. Placed 3rd in female 40 - 44. This was my third attempt at this distance and finally completed it. I'm please with my results and I posted my second best marathon time to boot.

5 miles into strong winds and a very good time, should be very proud.

Congratulations on cutting 43 minutes off your former PR. That is a huge difference. Cutting 90 minutes off of your first marathon is fantastic.

Ran Birmingham Mercedes Marathon(Birmingham, Alabama) Feb 13. My fifth, but was 30 plus pounds heavier in each of the others. What did 30 plus pounds lost mean?

An hour and a half better than my first marathon.

Broke my PR by 43 minute.

I was amazed at how good I felt, and was not spent the rest of the day at all. In fact felt more like I had done a mini.

THANKS SPARK!

The Birmingham course is a two loop course, and well run. The expo was nice. It's not as hilly as you might think. (There is a 2 1/2 mile section of hills each lap). Plenty of water/Goo/Poweraid stops and a fun atmosphere. As I remember about 3,500 half marathoners, and about 1,200 marathoners.

Just did something today that I have never done in my 55 years of life. I ran a 5 mile race in 30 mph winds with gusts up to 60. The longest hill was a half mile long and directly into the teeth of the wind. I never had the wind blow one leg almost into the other one like happened today.

It was a fun race even with the wind, would love to do it on a calm warmer day. Frostbite 5 Miler in Amber, PA 39:30, 5th out of 33 in my age group. Mile 3 was about a minute slower than the other 4 splits.

Houston is a good marathon, my first in 2005. Three years ago they stopped letting people start early. That ruled out the walkers and my wife is a walker. We now tend to do smaller marathons and half marathons. We find them to be a lot more fun, a lot more personal. I now have friends that are race directors.

Thanks RUN4FOOD, I appreciate the thoughts. Frankly I sometimes drive to0 hard-- I've missed runs because of injuries. Birmingham is hilly, and it's been really cold in Indiana. (Under 20, often under 10) and I have a great indoor track. The hills and outdoor is to get my body used to it a bit.
But I'll try to not over train ...

Thanks!

BTW, I looked at the Houston Marathon. It was full, and gets rave reviews!

DKIRKB, good luck on the marathon. My feel is if I'm 16 days out from a marathon and feeling good that is my major concern. I might do a couple of short runs, keep the pace, but shorten the distance. In Houston we don't do many hill runs so for us that would be more than I would consider. We have to run garages to get our hill work in.

Feb 13, in Birmingham, AL I am running the Mercedes Marathon. The last marathon I ran was before the Spark, and I was more than 30 pounds heavier.

Yesterday, Feb 27, I did my last long run. 22 miles.

16 days out. My thinking is hill work, 4-7 mile runs, with maybe a 10 thrown in.

Good thinking?

Sept. 18th, I am so excited to race with my running group, as a team in "The Dirty Dash". It's a 10k with an obstacle course and it's all in the mud. The team must cross the finish line together. What a great excuse to go play in the mud!!
Sept. 25th, I am registered for the Womens Fitness Celebration 5k. I have a friend that has never raced and I will be coaching and supporting her along the way as well as taking pictures of her first race. This one is not for me, it's for her and I feel so good about helping her through her first race experience (ok, there is a little selfishness in my motivation because I hope she will love racing and want to race with me in the future).

Below is a blog of my race report of this year's Bix 7 in Davenport Iowa. I had a blast and I am here to tell you the Master's Runners can get FASTER! I took 10 minutes off of my 2008 time! I will not be racing anymore until the Chicago Marathon because it messes up my weekend long runs to do shorter races. I want to totally focus on my marathon training because I want to qualify for Boston at Chicago.

I was close to being on track for a sub 3:10 finish at the 2010 Boston Marathon, but suffered an injury just after 18 miles. I believe the injury was related to stretching looking back on it now. I did manage to finish by stopping at 2 med tents along the last 8 miles, while limping & walking/ jogging. It was great to be a part of the most prestigious marathon in the world & to get my finishers medal, but it lacks that fulfillment that comes when you know you finished in your best time possible. God willing, I'll be back in 2011 for my Boston redemption.

Bib# 7492 for Boston!
I was just rejected from the lottery for the NYC Marathon yesterday, so going sub 3:10 is a must. My previous PR at Cape Cod this past Oct was 3:15:58. I believe the hills on the Cape Cod course are tougher than Boston (I did do a training run on the Boston course.) Praise the Lord, I'm praying for a good day so I can reach my goal.

Who else out there is running Boston? Anyone? I grew up in Boston with the Boston marathon. It is a very far distant goal of mine to do that. But I love to track and cheer on all those that I know are in it!

Two race reports and one coming up!

Saturday, November 28th - Mountain Masters 16 Mile race in Harlan, KY. Fourth year I've done this after visiting my mother for Thanksgiving. And once again, WOW! My quads felt the pain for 4 days afterward (even for a marathon, they usually clear up evening of the second day!). There's no flat on this course, just up and down - a signficant number of serious uphills paired with some seriously impacted downhills. And the first 12 miles is gravel road with many a rain-etched gulley to force slow, careful footing even on steep downhills (if the impact wasn't slowing me down already). Last 4 miles is on paved roads and starts with an entire mile or more of nothing but climb - 800' elevation change in that time. Wow. I've walked a great deal of that each time. Last mile to mile and a half is screaming downhill to the finish - but ohhhh, that impact pain by then!

Ordinarily, I'd expect to run a 16 mile race at right about 10:00 pace (2:40), but I was ECSTATIC to set a 4 minute PR this year at 3:11 (11:57 pace). It's that tough.

But at least the weather was close to perfect - single layer of UnderArmour cold gear and I was good to go. Great race... I'll be back next year! :)

Saturday, December 5th - Frosty 5K on the campus of LMU (Lincoln Memorial University) in Tennesse. My 14 yr old nephew's FIRST 5K!!! He didn't mind the 4 hills nor the cold/slushy/snowy/wet conditions but I felt it... especially the wet, cold feet when my racing flats gave me no protection! I won't make that mistake again. But it wasn't TOO cold and I held out. Unfortunately, they seemed to have missed directing us on one course segment, so it ended up being just 2.4 miles. But my nephew still had fun and that's all that counts.

Coming up - Winter Warmup 10K in Hyden, KY (10 minutes from where I grew up!!!) on Saturday, December 11! Last race in the area before I head back to NJ that afternoon.

Philly half marathon on Sunday, November 22. Perfect weather, great course, crowds and noise all the way. I didn't "race" it but ran well for me(2:08). Good way to loosen up and build confidence for the HILLY 16 miles I'll be racing tomorrow!

Tomorrow: Mountain Masters 16 Miles - Harlan, KY

Ran 2 races this weekend...

First up, on Saturday (11/7), was the Beauty and the Beach 5 miler (http://www.beautyandthebeachrun.com/) along the Jersey Shore in Long Branch, NJ. Women's only race. Pricey ($35) for a "local race," but enough of an event to be worth it. 500+ runners, endless post-race chocolates (plus the usual bagels and fruit, enough for all, even the late finishers). Decent post-race soiree with finger foods and low price beers at an establishment on the boardwalk where awards and raffle prizes were handed out. Course was TRULY pancake flat and FAST. Mile markers were all way off, but I think the total distance was accurate. With a race on Sunday, too, I wanted to take it easy (especially since I hadn't done a warmup due to the sub-40 temps before race start), but did end up pushing the last 3 miles just a bit. Even with running easily (normally a 10:00ish pace for me), the racing flats, race push, and flat course got me to a 9:21 pace without being at all trashed. Great race for casual runners, first-times, and the serious racers alike.

On Sunday, I ran an almost opposite race - competitive (USATF championship race) and hilly and with 1200+ runners across the 5K and 10K races - the Giralda Farms 10K in Madison, NJ. The weather was super - 60ish, with low wind, by race start. That day I was in the lightweight stuff - wicking t-shirt, shorts, and racing flats. I got in 1.5 miles of warmup running, which also helped a lot. I felt good from the start and, when I saw the first mile at 9:11, decided to run the first 5K aggressively and then just try to hang on for the second 5K. My goal was basically a good tempo run in my training for the Philly half, but I haven't raced a 5K in some time and kinda wanted to see how I could do over the shorter distance. After a 9:10 second mile, I picked it up and with a mile full of downhill, an 8:28 mile put me under the 9:00 pace goal for the first 5K. I settled down then, resting a bit "on the go" - that, combined with a hilllllly 4th mile, brought the pace down to 9:41. I recovered in the more balanced uphill/downhill last 2 miles, though, with an 8:58 and 9:20, and finished in 57:25 for a 9:17 pace - well below my goal of running faster than last year's 9:30. Yaaaaay! Philly, here I come! :)

The 10K at Giralda Farms is more competitive than a lot of local races due to its being a USATF championship, but it's still a nice run and there'll be enough people at a slower pace to have company out there. The 5K is even more suited to the casual runners. It's definitely a popular event - low on amenities, though the t-shirt is always nice and there are the usual bagels, water, and fruit post-race. And at $15 or less (depending when you register), the price can't be beat and it's definitely worth it. The hills make it a great workout run, too.

No races for me this weekend. I was going to do a 5K run in the Senior Olympics on Saturday, but am recovering from an injury from a 50 meter sprint race last Sunday. If I needed it to qualify for state, I would consider it, but since anyone (senior, that is) can run the 5K at state, I'm not going to take the chance of further injuring myself.

The next one is Nov 21 - a 5K Race for the Animals. I should be good for that one. Plus it's my 50th BD, and I can't think of any better way to celebrate a BD than with a run, cake, and dogs!

THE 11th ANNUAL VETERANS DAY 5K RUN/WALK - November 14,2009 - Summit Hill, Pennsylvania

http://www.mogorun.com/vetrun.htm

A surprising number of veterans run this (very small town). Many of them are VERY fast. My favorite race. I feel very comfortable around the other vets, nice Prayer at the start, big dinner and service after the race. Didn't meet him last year but heard that a 70+ guy runs it in 21 minutes!

I've got a fun run (5 miles) this Sunday. My next official race is December 6th, the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas HM. Then I just signed up for the Rock 'n' Roll Phoenix full Marathon in January!
