Every day, After having been all over the world since I was 5, I'm thankful for living in the Tampa Bay area but the Gulf! Here's one more reason....

Friday night, I ran in this Sunsets at Pier 60 Race Series. It starts with a Kids1 Mile Run followed by a 5K on Clearwater Beach. Literally, it's on the sands right next to the water break! I had a sore Achilles so I took it easy but all things considered, I did pretty good. More than half of our Triathlon runs here will include running on sand or beach trail so it's good practice.
We also have the Madeira Beach Series, held on the beach as well! I have to say it definitely is sweet to have these beach runs! And the sunsets are the best!

Did the Kiwanis Midnight Run last night, developed a plan, stayed with it, and in a huge field, found myself at the 3rd Place spot on the podium!

Sounds great! I have a 5-miler coming up on 4th of July. I have run the race 4 out of the last 5 years and have finished in the 38-40 minute range. I have been putting in the training miles, but seem to be falling off of my pace. Would like to come in under 40 but that may be a stretch right now. We will see!

Since I had been away, I went into a new age group on May 25, my 65th birthday. I took first in my last two races in the 60-64 AG and took two 3rds in my new AG. Tomorrow, I'm doing a fun 5K in Gulfport, a few miles south of me. I'm just going to do an easy pace and have fun with my friends on this one.I've been doing better since I've become less competitive and embraced the fun of the race. Go figure.

No racing currently on the calendar for me. I don't do well in the heat and humidity so no need to spend my money on races I know I won't do well at. :)

Congrats PMRUNNER on your 1/2 marathon this past weekend- and thanks for sharing your blog with us! Sounds like you had an awesome time.

I did a 10 mile trail race this past Saturday in the mountains of Chattanooga, TN. VERY technical (think rocks, rocks and more rocks) and my body took a beating. But the scenery was awesome with incredible bluff views, multiple stream crossings, and several waterfalls. I finished without falling, so consider that a success! I had a great time and can't wait to do my next trail race!

Eliminate excuses and avoid procrastination! Just Do It!

Blessings to you all,
Kim

I did it! I did my first trail race yesterday! I almost missed it because my car would not start but then a sent a text to the group of women I run with and one of them picked me up and she was not even running the race! How nice was that! This race was a doozie. It was not really a trail race since there was very little trail. emoticon It was more of a field run and there was a stream you had to run though twice! I could not decide if I loved it or hated it for most of the rest of the day but then I found my self registering for another one before going to bed last night. I may write a short blog about it.

Run On! Karen

Good luck! I did my first trail race last spring, it was a marathon relay. I enjoyed it, except for the fact that there was about two inches of rain two days before and the trails were muddy torrents for most of the race.

Planning on running a half marathon in West Point, NY at the end of March. A friend from Brooklyn is coming up to run it too.

I did my second 5K on December 21st! It was a much nicer race than the Color Run I ran back in August. It was so much better organized, and I didn't have to walk a mile and a half to get to the starting line!

The best news is that I managed to improve my time significantly. I went from a 17.5 mile in a 5K to a 15.5!

Anybody (else) running the Across the Bay 10K on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge this coming Sunday? I'm in wave #2, bib #2011. Biggest race (20,000) I've ever run in by far. Good luck if you're running it and if you see me, say hi! Would be great to meet a "teammate".

Had a tough, hilly 10k this morning. DS1 did the kids mile, coming in first out of 10 kids or so. Then the big race took off with the 5k and 10 k sharing an out and back course between West Point and cornwall, NY. Last year I pushed the two babies in the buggy and finished in 53:30. This year, I wanted to break 50 on a 10k, so I ran without the jogger. The last mile was a long brutal mile, but I kept pushing and came in at 49:30 or so. It was fast enough for an age group 3rd place!

THE most fun race in the world is the Missoula HM! Starts out with high fives from volunteers who are not only awake but enthusiastic at 4:00 in the morning. Hundreds of buses took us to the start line, fireworks at the beginning, drummers, signs, a guy in a tux playing a grand piano out in a field, water stations every 2 miles for the first 6 miles, then every mile with water, powerade, gummy bears, orange wedges, goo, cheerleaders, bands, what can I say? It is an experience! (and the best bling ever)

The Sunrise Watermelon 5K Series is half done and I'm in second place in my AG. The first one in 29:46 gun/29:21 chip; the second in 29:21 gun/29:03 chip. I lined up closer to the start. There are 7 of us in the 65-69 AG. We finished in the same order in both races, with the first 3 getting faster and the last 4 slowing down. So even though I was faster, my competition actually widened the gap in the second race with a 27:57. The next 5K of the series is on July 26th and the final is August 23rd.

I'll be running the Faster with FitNiche 5K on September 6th and then start focusing on distance. The Lakeland Red Ribbon Half Marathon is on November 8th and I'm aiming to beat my last year's time of 2:26 in this hilly scenic race around and between lakes. Last year I finished 4th of 15 in my AG, but I was in the 60-64 group. On December 6th I'll be running the OUC (Orlando Utilities Commission) HM. I've never run that course, but hope to do well. I understand it is a fairly flat course, but there are quite a few turns and red brick streets (I fell once on one) near the end.

Hope to train smart and run well!!

Two races so far this summer, a 5k that I ran pushing the baby and running with my 6 year old. We ran/walked it and finished about 40 min. He had run 1 mile races before, so going up to 3.1 was a stretch.

Then, on 4 July, I ran a 5 miler in my DW's hometown. I ran 38:13, which put me at 10/35 in my age group and at 105/300 overall.

Two upcoming races that I am signed up for:
On 26 July, I have a 4.5 mile mud run. After my run, the two big kids (8&6) will do the kids version, which is only 1 mile. Our first mud run, should be interesting...
On 23 August, I have a 10k. It is along rte 218 in NY, right outside the West Point gate and is very hilly. I ran (and blogged about it) last year. Last year I did it with the double jogger, this year I may just run it myself.

Happy running to all!

Watermelon 5K #1 was today. Ran much better than my last 5K, but not a PR. Finished in 29:15. As of now, I'm in 2nd place in my age group. Last race of the series will be in August and then they give out the awards. This was my first race in the 65-69 age group.

I signed up for the Summer Run Series - its a series of 5ks, 5 milers, and 10 Ks all held at the beaches and parks of Long Island. I will be running with my sister - she's ten years younger and a whole lot faster! I'm signing up for a half in the fall. Right now my long runs are eight miles so the half should be cake! L o l

Hi - I'm new to this forum. I'm training for my first marathon in October. this is actually my second time training for my first marathon. I trained for NYC in 2012 only to have it cancelled at the very last minute due to Hurricane Sandy (and mismanagement by the race organizer).

My upcoming races are:

June 8 - Dirty Half -my first trail half marathon
Aug. 1-2 Cascade Lakes Relay - this will be my 4th time running this awesome relay!
Aug. 9 - Huckleberry Half
Sept.13 - Bridge of the Goddesses Half
Oct. 12 - Victoria Marathon

JJ, I heard Joan Benoit Samuleson talk once, she is fascinating! She also ran the Women's Run 5 mile and, of course, won it! She was very interesting to hear speak and very willing to answer ANY questions. I love all women's runs, and runs with men too, but there is something special of thousands of women all doing something together.

Although I don't like short distances (aka- 5ks), I'm doing one on Memorial Day. I've been working hard the last 8 weeks on incorporating some speed work into my running so it's time to see if it's paid off. I hope to PR with a sub-30 minute 5k. emoticon

Blessings to you all,

Looks like you'll be busy, JJReebok.

I just signed up today for Lakeland Red Ribbon Half Marathon on Nov 8, 2014. I'm going to run the Watermelon Series - four 5Ks during Florida's hot season, 2 in June, 1 in July and 1 in August. I also signed up for the Galloway group training again this year. Hoping to stay healthy enough to benefit and participate in it all!!

On Thanksgiving 2010, we walked our 1st 5K with over 14,000 of our closest Tampa Bay friends. Our time was 59.54 at the St Petersburg Times Turkey Trot. Today, I go to Packet Pickup for our 4th Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot marking our 3rd Anniversary Running! There are now over 20,000 doing this lil race! I've cut my 5K time by more than 50% and have done over 50 races since. This race is now a part of our Thanksgiving tradition!

Turkey trot on thanksgiving in Andover, MA. Running the 5k with my brother and his family. This will be the 4th time we run it, it's becoming a family tradition.

We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training.

Karen, thanks for sending the article about Turkey Trots being so popular.
Turkey Trot 10K on Thursday in Houston.
Wife and I have doing this run for about 7 years. It's always fun.

On New Years day we have one of our favorite half marathons in Kingwood, just north of Houston. I won't be running this year, but my wife will be doing it.

I've committed to run the inaugural Lakeland (FL) Half Marathon on Nov 9, 2013, and Disney Princess HM on Feb 23, 2014. I'm debating whether to sign up for the St Pete Women's Half on Nov 24, 2013. I ran that one, my first, in 2:37 last year, using run 1min/walk 1 minute intervals throughout. I am training again this year with the Galloway training group in Lakeland on Saturday mornings. Last year I was in a "to finish" training group. This year I'm in a HM time improvement group, using either 2:30 min run or 3 min run, depending on temperature, and 1 minute walk intervals. (We have a total of 9 training pace groups.)
I may run some 5Ks, but haven't decided which ones yet.

Thanks for asking.

I got an email from the people putting on the Lighthouse and Lake run. Apparently the school district IS hosting the race on July 20th after all and it should still be listed on all the official websites, etc... whoever deleted it apparently got confused because it happened to be on the same date as another event that was cancelled.
