How do these NPCs compare to the party? Usually if I add an NPC to the party, I make them vastly under-powered in order to allow the PCs to shine.

Lol, I see what you did there. When I say I play a couple of NPCs, I mean that I play a couple of party members so the party doesn't become dragon toe jam. Naturally there are other NPCs, questgivers, flavor characters and such, but I run two characters for the party as well as DMing.

Hi, Butcher!

How do you only play a couple NPCs when you're running a game? I assume you mean more major NPCs who get a lot of camera time, but are they in the party?

Normally I wiuld say playing without hesitation, but I have been running a game for te past month now, and I have been playing a couple of NPCs, and that's been a good balance for me.

I've been gaming about 30 years now, and many groups play differently. Some do like to be "shepherded". Some like free form. It depends on how you have fun. Most of the way you "keep them on track" is by putting the next thing in their path, the person they have to see, crawled out the back of the inn. Unless you are with a really creepy group, you can make it a child or a young woman, and one of them will usually pick it up on the sympathy vote.

Right now I am DMing (too bad on the Dungeon Master for those not old enough to remember) a yahoo group. We were all in MMORPGs together, with some outrageous time zones (one player in France and another in Ireland, in in Kwadjalien and 2 in Alaska). We found posting our turns let us all play together, without having to be on together. I keep the maps in Power point and take screen shots of them, so it builds the world as we go. I make jpgs and post them in the files section. Even made pictures of a scrap of paper they found with raised dots on it, to let them figure out what the message was.

While the game may have more house rules than published rules, we all seem to be having a good time.

To answer the question. I like both roles equally...but then I am very good at them.

I'm not sure how I'd get them moving in the same direction (i.e. defeat Vlaakith, rescue the heir apparent of the realm, etc) without some sort of direction, but I suppose that's why I usually find myself on the other side of the DM screen. Kudos to those who are able to walk that line successfully.

Just to answer your question, DMs are not supposed to keep the players "on task"--that's called "railroading" and it's a Bad Thing. The DM's job is not tell a story, but rather to set the stage for the characters to tell their stories.

I've always been a bit more comfortable as a player, but when I moved a couple states away from my group for a job, I tried my hand at DMing in an online format... it was a disaster.

How to DMs keep people on task? My players ended up derailing a critical plot arc because they got into a tavern brawl and ended up burning it -- and most the town -- to the ground. It wasn't the first time something like that had happened, so through the magic of DM power, they all died of smoke inhalation and the campaign ended. Not my best moment, I'm afraid.

Abadapple, even if you don't play Pathfinder or even D&D, take a look at Pathfinder's Gamemastery Guide. Some of the information is game specific, there's a lot that isn't. Look on-line for game master tips, tricks and techniques (there's a number of blogs).

Once you've done that, pick a game that you're comfortable with the rules set, and run it. If you make mistakes, be honest and admit it. DM'ing for the first time is scary, but it can also be a lot of fun. Good luck.

I've wanted to try DMing but nobody wanted to show me how -_-;
even though they complain about having to DM all the time.

In most campaigns I've been in we have a nice diversity of races and classes but nobody ever wants to be a cleric (myself included).

I usually prefer playing. I don't think fast enough to do well at GMing. Usually when I DO GM, it's co-GMing with my husband. I take control of the NPCs and he takes control of the plot.

In the past, I've played much more than I've GM'ed. However, I recently started running a modern game and I'm having a blast!

I'm caught in between my love for realism, pouring over all the rules to figure out a system, and my love for role playing, being the actor I always wanted to be. For me, the story is the biggest part of gaming. I love the creativity, discovering (or revealing) the plot, and the excitement of each "episode" in our series.

KILLER_JOE, I find it interesting that everyone in your group (D & D, I presume)would want to play a fighter. Back in 'the day', everyone I played with wanted to be a magic user or an elf. Oh, and there was the occasional thief.

I GM Pathfinder set in the Dark Ages. The main characters are from the kingdom of Ebrauc, a subkingdom of the Britons ruled by King Uther Pendragon. The party is currently in a short adventure in Gibraltar, called Mons Calpe at this time, hardly populated, and controlled by the Visigoths. I like a historical fantasy feel to my gaming.

We are taking a brief sabbatical from that due to some personal issues that kept me from GMing for a while, and I am playing in my wife's game, which is the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path. We are in the first module, "Burnt Offerings," and having fun, mostly. The last game was less fun for me because I felt like I was being accused of being sort of mean to another player (I wasn't, but I believed I was). I had the person I was told I was being mean to on the right demonstrating body language implying that I should have been a nicer player and the person on my left (that player's father) grunting and squirming in a manner that made me think he was mad at me - over a disagreement between two well-role-played characters. I felt pretty uncomfortable, so I had to get up from the table and find something else to do. I also felt the need to extract my character from the party since I didn't want my absence to give the party license to turn my character into instant cannon-fodder. I am not sure how the players will get along at the next session (next week), but I hope for the best.

I enjoy playing when the DM(GM) is good. The game I am playing right now does not have that good of a DM. He made his own world and some new rules for ir and the game is rather broken.... Got to love it when you see a level 10 spell caster destroy a level 25 fighter.... I am enjoying the RPing in that game though, the fighting is just annoying.

I also DM(GM) a game. I am running the "World's Largest Dungeon" right now with some of my own twist added. It's my first time DMing and the only complaint I have gotten is that no one like my character.... mainly because I use her to try and get a plot going because no one else seems to want to RP they just want to kill things....

I am me, who else could I be? I can try and be the best me I can though.

Hah! time to game... I wish. I'm living vicariously through others at the moment.

However, I have done both the playing and the GMing. I like them both for different reasons. GMing gives you the chance to be creative, tell a tale, and really create something that others will appreciate. Playing allows you to explore an alter ego, really develop your own character and feel like your in the adventure. Both have their draw.

I haven't run a game, except at cons, for ages. I miss it. I'm tempted to run a one-shot Spirit of the Century game for some friends. It's a simple system so I should be able to talk 2-3 of them into it.

There's a con in November and I've already decided to run an Ironclaw game & a SotC game.

I'm currently involved in a couple of different games. We usually play on Thursdays and switch every other week.
The first game I'm involved with is a Hunter game. I'm a player in this game and it's based in a world very much like the show Supernateral.
The other game, the one which I GM, is Shadowrun. I don't love this system, I'd much rather run it as a d20 game, but the players like it, so I'm sticking with it.
If I had to pick though, I'd love to just be a player for a while. It takes a lot of time and effort to GM, and with 2 kids, a wife, a full time job, etc. it's proving to be pretty demanding.

I started out as a player in my D&D group but took over as DM, since the first DM didn't have the time to run a weekly game.

It's been an interesting creative exercise, melding together the published adventures that I run with the players' characterizations and my own ideas.

But I'm not very strong at D&D tactics, and while everyone has fun, I don't think I'm providing enough of a challenge in combat sessions.

And I don't typically have the time to come up with my own adventures.

I suspect I may do better running a more freeform, rules-light game. Until then, I prefer being a player.

I've never GMed (or DMed), but I'm trying set up an online game where I would be. I actually haven't played D&D in over 20 years. It's mostly been GURPS or old World of Darkness with occasional forays into DC Heroes.

I seem to have the most time available in my group, so I am always the one that runs our regular game. However, the others occasionally (once every month or two) run another campaign so that I can play too. There are times when I would rather give up the DM job, but then I probably wouldn't be able to get my fix. emoticon

Sometimes I DM (or GM for those sensitive souls) but most of the time I play. I like both rolls but right now I don't have time to prep the game as I like to so my hubby is running.

Which do you prefer to do?

For me, I like being a player but I ALWAYS find myself DMing due to a lack of interest of DMing or others aren't comfortable doing it.

The other problem I have is that I like to play a fighter but 9 times out of ten so do all the players so I usually will back down and play a non-human like a halfling, elf or dward and my class is uaually a cleric, sometimes a rogue or even a sorcerer. Not that I don't LIKE playing those rolls but if I didn't our campaigns would be over in a heartbeat without a cleric for curing wounds and such.
