About 45 minutes. I have been working with my horse following the Clinton Anderson Techniques. I am really enjoying it. I have only owned horses for about a year.

None, yet, but I've got a riding lesson on her tonight, so that's half an hour to get ready, half an hour to ride, and half an hour afterward to unsaddle and brush.

I just joined this group. I hope it's active; I couldn't fail to notice that the leaders haven't posted in 2 months. Is this a problem?

I got to show someone else horse in halter at a judging clinic and received the greatest compliment: it was a horse I just met today and this lady asked me if it were my horse that I was showing, I said "no, just met him this morning" and she said: "I was really impressed with how kind and gentle you were with that horse, you sowed him really nice, if I were a horse, I'd want to be your horse." what??? she just about knocked my socks off! made my week, or heck, made my month!

last week we had 2 good 2hr rides, all around the property....I've been riding my daughter's pony (she's a big pony) because she's been feeling a bit of the spring fever.....first ride was quite entertaining to my 2 oldest kids, pony and i had a lot of episodes, but I won them all with patience and perseverance, and our second ride was like I was on a different horse, she was much more behaved and youngest daughter is happy....whew!

Sometimes when I am gardening but would like to fit in a ride too... I let one or two of them out to graze the lawn beside me while I work & if time allows I will get on one with just the halter and just mosey around the farm yard for a bit.
Otherwise, usually when I get on I have a "hard time" getting off. A 30 minute ride can turn into 90 minutes very easily.
This weekend it is raining, but I will be going out to the "big" pasture anyway, to check on them and see if they have any needs.

Spent the whole weekend horseback, starting Friday night. Rode in a reining clinic Sat and Sun, alternately working and watching, and got home Sun evening with enough time to ride my other horse out for half an hour! What a great weekend!!!

Unfortunately not as much as I would like, I work and when I get home it is almost dark (I can't wait until the time changes this weekend). I barely have time to feed and get my cardio walk in. I ride every weekend though.

I'm done just doing barn chores and feeding! I started riding seriously this weekend, getting my horses legged up for the summer and show season. Temps have moderated in the early evenings here and I can saddle up and lope 2 horses in an hour and a half and give them both a couple of hours in their coolers to dry off afterwards. Soon, I will start my morning chores at 5:30 so I can get to work by 7 and leave at 4 - give myself more time after work to ride! Weekends are when I get in my long rides (and don't get my house cleaned - something's gotta give!).

I spend at least two hours just filling buckets of grain and lugging them to various paddocks for my 10 horses and ponies. My place is hilly, so it's up and down the hills from one paddock to another. Does that count? I need to do do strength training because those 50 pound bags of grain seem to get heaver the older I get.

Too funny Deb!!! LOL I was going to ask if the two minutes it took to lead Bitsy from the barn to the pasture counts. LOL Okay, we do clean stalls every morning, but the horses are outside by then. Oh, and we lead them back in every night, so does that count??? LOL Actually, the weather here isn't all that bad so I want to go out and ride for a little while. As long as the temps are above 30 I should be okay. And we DO have the indoor, so I don't have to worry about footing...

Debbie,

Thank you so much for responding! My husband is FINALLY on board with me. He says rain or shine our butts are walking or working in the barn every night! I am also going to go walking for a half an hour on my lunch starting today in a few minutes!

Have a wonderful day!

Hey Lori! Congrats on dropping 2 more pounds FOREVER. It sounds like you have the right state of mind to meet your goals. You are recognizing the problems and you are working through them. Way to go! That is so hard to do. Because you live in a place that gets a lot of weather you may have to do what I do... dress for it. I put on my lovely muck boots and rain gear and go for my walk at lunch and in the winter it is snow gear. Sure I get laughed at but I don't care... finally I really don't care I am living for me... and if I don't do this I won't be living for anyone.
You'll be back in the saddle before you know it! Take care my friend!

To anyone,

I have got myself into some bad habits! I am married with two teenagers and I work full time. I live in Southern Oregon and it rains a lot! So, I have found myself in a yucky unhealthy routine. I leave to take my kids to school at 6:50 am and then I go to work. By the time I pick them up and get home it is 6:00 pm. By the time I make dinner and get that all cleaned up it's 7:00 pm.

I am not spending any time with my horses during the week. I only do on the weekends. So, I feel guilty for them. I feel guilty for me... I get zero exercise. THIS IS NOT GOOD! I need to make time for me! I am committing myself to an hour in the barn or walking starting tonight! Rain or shine!

This past week I have lost 3 lbs! Woo Hoo! I want to ride again so bad. I probably could... I just worry that I am too heavy for my mare. My horse is about 1100 lbs. 20% of her weight is 220 lbs. I am 218. I hate that icky number!

I have spent a good 15 yrs of my life wishing I could get the weight off, wishing I looked good, wishing I felt sexy for my husband, wishing I felt good, just wishing.... That's ridiculous! Time to make this reality! My life is too short to just wish it away.

There are so many things I want to do. I want to try team penning, I want to ride in a parade, and I want to join a drill team. 2009-2010 it will happen! I have also wanted to lead a 4-H group. Guess what? I did it last week! I am so excited!

I hope that those who read this feel inspired to go after what you want. Don't waste your life wishing! Best of luck to all of you!

Blessings on your day!
Lori - Southern Oregon emoticon

I rode for 2 hours today, also rode Blue for the first time, he was really good. I didn't do a long ride on him, just enough to get him used to me instead of the trainer. I will do more each day.

I had a great ride through the northern pines again on Kruiser. The air was still, there were no bugs and it seemed like we were alone in the back country. The horses went great and they are coming home in a couple of days, WOOHOO!

spent time feeding the herd morning and night. I also took my family out to visit them while they were here and we petted and took pics of the young ones and some of the mares.
I hope to ride tomorrow again as 2 of my horses are at the trainers.

I will this evening. Yesterday just went out to pet, feed, and fly spray because it was raining. I go see them every evening for sure and when I get my place bought and built then they will be back in my backyard. YEA!!!

Starting this journey over again. Lost quite a bit during divorce almost 5 years ago and have allowed myself to gain it all back by not weighing myself daily and recording what I eat.
God gives me the strength every day to face all obstacles.

Spent like 3 hours last night at the barn with both horses and the Chiropractor. It is absolutely amazing to me to watch John the Chiropractor work on the horse. You can literally see them go from utter discomfort to a complete ahh feeling in a matter of a hour. The one horse kept moving her hip to him as if to say it hurts here work on this part please...
Anybody else have there horses adjusted?

It all works out in the end

Unfortunately the last several days have been hectic and I have not been able to make it out to the barn. Was there Wednesday to watch my biggest boy Timmy get scoped for his choke. Good and bad news. Good news the area in his throat is not ulcerated bad news major diet changes for him... It was neat experience though.

I spend anywhere from 1 to 2 hours a day with the horses, usually feeding and mucking stalls/pens. When I ride, the time stretches to 3-4 hours. I rode both my horses last weekend, about an hour each, and rode one again last night. I need to ride my reiner 35-45 minutes a day to get him in shape for show season. My other horse does Western Pleasure, trail rides and works cows, along with some arena work to keep him supple. He gets ridden every couple of days. It's hard trying to fit in so much riding when you work full time and have a side job, too! How does everyone else do it?

Last night I spent 45 minutes grooming and riding.. total 1 hour. Wed night I spent 2 hours with him lunging and ground manners, and even leading him over some tiny crossrails.. that was tooo funny. Tonight I will spend another hour and a half or so riding, grooming and cleaning him up. I plan to spend at least three hours tomorrow.. since it is Saturday and I have horse laundry to do and a lesson. He will also get his tail washed if it warms up a couple degrees.. it is still a little chilly here in Western WA.

I feel so bad...I only spend about 1/2 hour twice a day right now. Maybe an hour each time if it's not toooo frigid out. it's only going to be the high of 9 a couple days this week. Not going to be out there too long those days. I will go out more often just to give them hay/but it will be quick.

I had surgery on my thumb so I haven't really even done chores as much. I will later this week though...get my stiches out.

I don't spend as much time because I am afraid she will bite me again. I try not to push it...but God willing on Saturday the weather will be decent and I can take her outside and work on ground manners.

Today was a great day!!! It been raining where I live (West Coast BC Canada) and our fields and trails have been flooded. Yup - ducks and blue herons where wonderful green grass used to be. However, the rain clouds got chased away and things began to dry out. Today my 4 YO Canadian and I along with my wonderful friend and his play mate rode the trails for 2 hours. When I say rode I mean RODE. Both boys were so full of energy, we could hardly control them. We trotted most of the time, cantered and yes, full out galloped especially when the train near us shunted. Oh, boy!!! What a ride. I guess all in all I spend 4 1/2 hours with my guy. emoticon

Trudi,

You are truly blessed to have that much time.

I usually go in and do chores/feed in the morning- about 20min.

Then go back out & put them in the paddock while I'm at work.

Then go back out in the evening to groom/work in stall with flexing and reclean. - about 30-40min.

IF the weather was nice I would take them out for a little ride...unfortunately I got them home, and FINALLY got all the tack needed for riding ($$$$$)...and the weather went ka-putt. Next year will be much better.

Everyonce in a while there is decent weather...sure hope it happens on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon...then I can ride some.

This morning I spent 2 hours with the girls. First, taking off the nighttime blankets and brushing each one, then checking everyone's feet. I usually take my time doing this and then feed. We have one young filly that was so impatient at feeding time that she would rake her teeth across the pipe fence, squeal, charge the other horses etc. Since I have been taking my time with the grooming she is beginning to learn some patience. She now looks at me with interest, as if to say " Is it my turn yet?"
Her previous owners treated her like a play-thing and let her get away with all kinds of bad behaviour.
After I finish the feeding, then I do chores around the barn.
I will then go to the house and wait for them to finish eating and drinking.
Then I halter each one and tie to the fence, while I take one into the round pen and do some general ground work. ( I use a lot of Clinton Anderson) Each one gets their turn in the pen, even our Grandmother Mare that is 28 years old. If she doesn't get her turn, then she will pout and turn her back on me. Since we do not ride her anymore I usually will take her outside the pasture and just lead her down the road and back for about 30 minutes.
( I do this after the other 3 have been through the round pen , brushed and cooled down).
When my grandson gets done with basketball practice and I take him home we will just halter the girls up and then take all of them down the road for some exercise and a little grazing. By the time we are done, the sun is going down and it is time to feed and put blankets back on again.
Can you tell yet that I have a lot of time on my hands? LOL! Even if I did have more demands on my time, I know that I would still be a BARN BUM.
So, all in all, I usually spend about 4 or 5 hours a day with the horses. I know that when the weather gets really cold we won't get as much done each day .
HAPPY TRAILS TO ALL!
Trudi

A horse we sold 4 years ago just got rescued from the person. He had let her almost starve to death, her stall buddy, a stallion, died 2 days after they rescued Panda:-( We had branded her years ago and the woman that rescued her searched us out and I went to meet her and see Panda today. A real nice lady, I feel very blessed that her and her daughter love horses so. As soon as Panda is strong enough she is coming home, "for good"!! Panda has put on about 200lbs in 2 months and has a LOT more spunk. I spent 2 hours with her today, she was happy to see me!!!

Brand your horses, you never know what might happen in the future {]:-)

Hi! I'm new to the team...thought I would jump right in.

This morning I spent about 40 minutes...just mucking/watering/chatting with, and loving on our 2...then I put them out for the day.

I unfortunately would have loved to stay and work with them (I just got my first handy stick, rope halter, and lunge! woo hoo!)..BUT I have to be at work. BUMMER

If the weather permits (which does not look tooo promising. grrrrrr) I will work with them tomorrow.

My Horse Bonanza and my Staffordshire bull terrier are the best investments I could have made. When I decided to get the weight off, they were their for me my staffie walks five miles with me every morning and Bonanza faithfully walks the fence line so we all are getting exercise. Maybe try taking him for longer and longer walks step it up weekly. The reward will benefit you both physically and renew that bond between the two of you. Bonanza likes spice drops so I put a few in my pocket and he eagerly awaits his award as for my staffie he needed the extra exercise and his muscles are starting to show, I admit I am jealous of him as he is buffing up. Lots of Luck!! Have Faith in yourself and know your horses love for you is unconditional and the support from these awesome people rowing the same boat including me are behind you 100%

I've only spent about 45 mins today. Mostly just from feeding. I've been training horses professionally for over 8 years now. The sad part is the depression, from weight gain and the physical breakdown of my body has made horses more work than pleasure. But I'm on my way back!! Hopefully with some help from all of you. I am spending 45 minutes today longeing as soon as I get out of here (work)

There is a Ken McNabb clinic at our barn this week and weekend so the riding has been at ZERO since the arena is closed (and it is cold and rainy).. Beau doesn't do wet or cold.. like I said in my intro.. Beau is a big pampered baby. I don't think he had ever seen weather until he came up here two years ago..lol.. He was born and raised in Southern California.

Today is Monday and my daughter's day off. She will feed and clean stalls. Later this afternoon I will meet her and we will work with the 2 young fillies. Yesterday, we saddled them up and tied them to the fence; for an afternoon of learning patience and giving to pressure. Both of them did fine. (Of course, we were never far away, just in case one of them decided to panic.)
Tuesday through Friday I spend at least 45min. with each horse; grooming, cleaning feet, some bending and flexing and a little longeing.
I am glad to find another Horse People Team with Spark People. Each one is really great and with great team leaders.

Its is so rewarding. I rode Flare today and set up the video recorder so I could check out our movement and jump a couple cross rails then guess what it wasn't on LOL oh well maybe tomorrow if it doesnt rain.

The two lil ones lunged one and turned out the other I just didnt have the energy after my run this morning and I have to work today I have to save some energy. Sounds llike a excuse now that I have typed it out. darn it. Oh well I was out and did something with all of them even momma horse. Stall still need to be clean I might be able to get my kid to do it but I doubt she doesnt ride at all.

Happy Riding

emoticon I spent 1 hour cleaning all the stalls in the barn today. I burnt 382 calories! I bet I feel sore tomorrow! I think my 4 year old grew another whole inch, he was 15.3, now I think he is 16 H. I hope he stops growing! emoticon

You are busy! I know how it is. When the competition season starts, in February, I have 2 horses to ride, and if my son does'nt get his rode, I have to add him to my list. But it is so rewarding, is'nt it?

I bought it on Ebay it has a 6 weeks of plans(you can use it however you like) and you use it 3x a week and each day is different I already feel stronger. Some workouts you need a machines some you don't, some you can modify with a fitness ball or resistance bands.

I have two ex race horses and one is full of himself he's really a doll baby and is very stiff in one leg but wants so badly to have a job. He bucks and plays anytime i'm on another horse, so I need to be strong just in case he wants to play while I'm on him.

I rode both young horses today which was awesome. Its suppose to rain the next couple days so I'm going to try and ride all three tomorrow am b4 it rains.

Cleaned stalls.

Happy Riding

The Riders' Fitness program? Sounds interesting. Does it actually give you routines and tips for fitness? Where can I get it.

CLeaning stalls is get strength training! LOL ALso if your body mechanics are correct you can workout your quads. (Can you tell Im trying to act like its fun.)

We dont have ICE we just get down into the teens (temp) in the morning its been 25-50 so I just have clothes that keep me warm. I know your probably laughing at me but we are not use to really cold weather. I hope you get out to your horses its such good therapy!

Jumping37-Thank you for starting this thread. I may actually get out this weekend, it is suppose to be up in the 50's! I'll love it, perfect riding weather. Although, the ice under the snow may inhibit me some, it will be good to get back on.
I suppose I could start cleaning my own stalls, too. My son who is 13 has been doing it as a part of his chores. Did you know that a 150 pound women can burn 272 calories per 30 minutes of vigorous barn cleaning? emoticon

Consult not your fears, but your hopes and dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you have tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.

Three things that help me succeed.
1. planning workout and meals a day or more ahead of time.
2. visiting urban mommy's page :)
3. Believing I can do it.

Three things that guarantee failure
1. fast food
2. emotional eating
3 being in a carb coma= no movement

I wanted to post this topic as I used to be motivated just by waking up in the morning and running out to ride at day break yet over the past few years my get up and go has been "not so good" more like get up and take care of other things.

I invite anyone who would like to spend more time with there horses find this useful.

Nancy
