Am I the only one signing in every time I come to this post???
Jan I think you are right about the miltary and the pocketbooks. I ordered a subscription to W W magazine through GS school and I'm still waiting for my first issue. I already got a notice from them wanting me to extend my subscription. It wasn't easy picking out magaines and I only took foody ones. GS school had this as a fund raising project. Just the time when I'm cutting back on the family type of magazines.
Ann, I have this vision of all the military wives getting together "What did you get for Christmas" and they all answer a pocketbook!
Often french toast recipes call for day old bread - a bit drier than fresh I guess. I recently used a french toast recipe from the Dec WW magazine that called for 12 slices of reduced calorie bread but you stack them by threes to fit snuggly in a 8" square baking pan, then pour over the milk/egg mixture to soak overnight. I think the baking in the morning was about an hour but it was very good.
DH with me following in the car took the motor home back to the shop. They sealed the windshield and door window a couple of weeks ago but we've had rain and they both are still leaking. So frustrating.
After that DH wanted to go to the base exchange that is close buy. I ended up buying more than he did. I needed to stock up on get well and sympathy cards. Also found a pair of corduroy Alfred Dunner slacks. I didn't try them on so I hope they fit. When I got to the register there was another $10.50 discount that sure surprised me. I can't describe this well enough but this is a big exchange and that had the biggest collection of pocket books I have ever seen. I'm not stretching it when I say there must have been 2,000 or more. I guess the Marines buy their wives, mothers, and girl friends pocket books for gifts.
Then I suggested we go to the Costco Business Center that isn't far from our house. I always thought it was their business offices but it is a giant Costco for restaurant type of places. They had huge size pots and pans, and restaurant type of items and paper supplies. They did have vegetables in 50 lb. bags but some fruit in smaller sizes and I did get some blueberries and raspberries. Their frozen foods were in cases. Ice cream was in containers larger than the ice cream stores use. Canned items and other packaged items were in huge boxes. I think I got another mile of walking in. It was quite interesting. Not busy or crowded at all.
Question: what kind of bread do you use when you make French Toast? One cook book said not to use soft bread. I would like a bread that is thicker than normal.
Patty, those little stockings are so cute. I like the embroidery embellishments.
Louise, You must be enjoying your Christmas decorations now. We went to Costco tonight and driving home in the dark we could see Christmas lights on houses or sometimes Christmas trees inside a window. What a joyous time of year!
Nana, I hope the allergy medicine gives you relief and helps heal up the bronchitis.
Ann, Isn't it funny they don't offer more options on buying the pineapple salsa? Six seems like a good amount to order. 36 is a lot!!
Today was TOPS and our Christmas party. I've been really busy working on it and other TOPS things. The good news is today I got to announce to the group that we have a new Weight Recorder and Assistant. So I won't be wearing the two hats anymore. Such a relief! The party was fun and in this case the left/right game worked well. We opened the gifts one at a time which made it more fun. Then we had an auction. My white bread sold for $6 a loaf and I put in a necklace and earrings that were Mom's that went for $30 so that and many other things we auctioned brought a nice sum for State Recognition Days in the spring. Now I'm sitting back in my comfy chair in my nightie and robe with my feet up and whew! next week will be much less work for me.
Now I can concentrate on getting my home ready for Christmas.
Hi Again, DH and I finally put up our Christmas decorations. DH put up the table top tree and put lights on it. I put on the ornaments which are Christ Centered and other decorations in the livingroom. Maybe this weekend DH will put lights around the outside. I also decorated the Italian Cepo.
Patty-love the socks and the hats. I tried to crochet a little today. My carpel tunnel acts up so I do a little at a time.
Louise-sounds like you are doing really well with healthy eating.
Ann-mailed my cards too and the corn chowder sounds so yummy.
I am still trying to recover from Bronchitis. The doctor told me to take some allergy medication called zytec. He said that it was $4 a pill in all stores but Costco. He said, at Costco they sell a generic type for about 4 cents a pill. You all have a great day
Patty, your socks are adorable. What a great way to use up left over yarn.
When I got up this morning DH hadn't gone out for his walk yet. He was trying to do something on the computer. Great, so the cell phone was here and I called a restaurant in Ma. to order a gift cert. for the fellow that helps me so much with the house there.
Now I've been trying to order 6 jars of Pineapple Salsa at a place in Texas for DS and DIL they really like their pineapple salsa. I've not been too successful. I either get 1 jar or 36 jars and I only want their 6 pack. I'll try again later.
I need to get my Ch. cards mailed and go to the bank to order a couple of savings bonds. This will be the last ones I order since the government won't be selling the E bonds after 1/1/12. The ones they will sell doesn't sound like much interest to me. The two I buy them for are now teens so probably would rather have the cash.
I was going to make a vegetable corn chowder for supper but don't have any celery so that will have to wait another day. I'll look through my soup recipes and come up with something else.
