Hi Debi and Marlo,

I have been pretty much MIA here.Sorry. Debi, got that team email yesterday, and I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I have just reread a few posts here, and I see that you were writing about her not doing well, but I hadn't seen them.

I still have both my parents - but they live 3,000 miles away! Both of you may regret not seeing your mothers more, but I imagine it was way more than I can manage. I am going out to Ontario in a few weeks to see them for their 60th wedding anniversary in December. I was out in March this year, but since I am still working and only get 4 weeks holiday a year, this is all I can manage.

They both have a lot of health issues, so things can change really fast for them. I am trying to save enough money to take an extended leave of absence when things get worse, but so far have been able to save very little here.

Anyway, going on about me, but just rereading these posts really has the aging and ill mother issue way up there for me.

But Debi, my thoughts are really with you.

Irene

Hi Marlo & Tommy!
I have a book or two coming your way - mysteries with cats / dogs as main characters! I am on a waiting list from the library for the Unscratchables!

My Mom is not doing too well at all and I'm going to spend a week with her in a few days. She isn't doing well at all and this may be very close to the end. Thank you for your good advice and your good thoughts.

Can't recall whether I told you about plants for outside your door, but depending on how much sun it gets, Hibiscus are great in Florida and bloom all year as long as they get a little supplemental watering when there isn't enough rain. If you prune them periodically to keep them from getting too leggy, they are really nice. My mom had me plant some cute little bushes for her last May that have relatively small purple flowers and they too seem to have some blooms pretty much all year. The common name for those is Mexican Petunia. You might enjoy those, too.

Anyhow - I need to get back to work and I'll "talk" to you soon. Take care,
Debi

Dear Debi and Crew:)

I am sorry to hear about your mother. All I can recommend is that you spend as much time with your Mom as you can. Just today, I was wishing that I could go back in time, even if just to those times, when I could have been with my Mom in the nursing home and I was in another room or outside the building doing something mundane. I just wish that I could be with her now. Don't let your sister get all the joy of taking care of your Mom. Make sure that you get time with her too. My brother feels bad that he didn't spend enough time with my Mom. I wish now that I had made him give me a day or two off a week and let him take care of her and have the joy of being with Mom. I wish that I had pushed him to do that.

Eat right and take care of your health too, Debi. You need your strength now more than ever with so many demands on your time and energy. Plenty of vegetables and fruit and lots of water:)

I left Tommy outside in the rain today, Bad Mommy!! I was on the computer and didn't notice that it had started raining out. I had left him under a truck in the neighbor's yard and I walked out in the rain and he was right there where I had left him. He came out and I carried him home, but he did not like that either. Oh no! He is not a kitty boy, he is a MAN CAT! So, I put him on the ground and he walked in, he he. He was wet. I wiped him off with a towel. I gave him a can of salmon for dinner. I have to watch his weight though so he gets about 1 or 2 spoons. He mostly liked the juice anyway.

I am reading a FICTION book! I know that is unusual for me and I kind of figured out why. I find it difficult to enjoy myself without Mom here and reading books is something that I really enjoy. But this book is SOOOO good that I am still reading it anyway. It is called, "The Unscratchables" by Cornelius Kane. It is a hard hitting detective type novel (like Micky Spillane), but the characters are cats and dogs. It is hilarious! I am having so much fun reading this book. You have to get it, Debi. I think that you will enjoy it too. I got it from the Science Fiction Bookclub, so it is a Bookclub book. If you belong to one of the bookclubs, they may have it still. I got it about a year ago, but am just reading it now.

Hi There!
So glad that the catmint is doing its job! I have to admit that I prepared the box for mailing rather late on Friday night to take it to the post office Saturday morning. When I was writing the label it just seemed that Janice went with Hilliker and that's what I wrote, almost like automatic writing. Of course, I always remember Janice. I certainly hope I didn't upset anyone with my faux pas.

I have been busy, busy, busy at work and at home. My aunt had surgery on both knees at once - her choice - and I've been trying to visit her in rehab when I can. My mom isn't doing too well and may not be with us too much longer. My sister lives with her and is doing a fabulous job taking care of things, but there comes a time for each of us when our fate is not in the hands of people.

Lots of hugs and good wishes to you and yours
Debi emoticon and Mulligan and Maud and Gracie

Dear Debi and Mulligan,

Thankyou so much for sharing (and caring:) in my time of need. I feel so much more secure with a full bottle of green leaves. It makes me very happy. emoticon With much purrs and meows, Tommy Flame-Point the Third Siamese, Esq.

Yes, thankyou, Debi. I thought I would add my note on to Tommy's. It was extremely nice coming home to a box marked "Janice Hilliker":) Even my brother liked that! Thankyou for thinking of that and us and remembering my Mommy. Thankyou for the gifts inside the box too. I threw the mice out to Tommy who was playing with them at 2 am in the morning. He acts like a kitten sometimes and in human years he is 68 years old! It kept my nephew up who is staying with me in my room right now for two weeks. Tommy takes the mouse and flings it around. He acts like a kitten! Must be the catnip:) Do you have any for people?!

Hi Marlo (and Tommy)
Sounds as if things are cruising along for you - as summer is supposed to do. I am very tight for time right now, but just saw your post from a few weeks ago! Of course Mulligan will share his stash of cat-mint with Tommy. I may not get to the post office until Saturday morning, so you'll have to wait just a little longer.
Hugs and pats for cats,
Debi

Hi Grace! I am happy that you liked the book. It seems like every time I am about finally to start reading a book another issue of Cat Fancy magazine comes in and you know I have to read that cover to cover! emoticon

There is going to be a cat show in Orlando, July 9th and 10th, and I might go for one day. I have never been to one of those and they look like a lot of fun. I might not stay all day (that wouldn't be fair to Tommy who would be stuck at home wishing he could be outdoors:) Mostly, I would like to see all the different cats and the cat toys and products. Tommy's favorite toy is a piece of ribbon, so he is very inexpensive to satisy, he he!

I just found out the website on the computer for the local library and found all these different classes that are held, a lot of interesting ones. I want to go to the Native Plant Society (gardening), the Doll Guild (dollmaking) and there is one on Grief Support too that my brother and I may go to. They offered more than that, they had Spanish 1 and Rug Hooking, Knitting, lots of different crafting. Pretty good for free and close to home, right? Well, some of the courses are at libraries that are in neighboring towns, but even still they are mostly local. So, I am excited about doing them this month.

I am being strict on the Atkins diet again, because I want to see how much I can lose in three weeks. I am adding in exercise three days a week also. Hopefully, I will be able to move the ticker.

I hope that your mother is doing better, Grace, and that you are enjoying gardening. How are you doing, Irene? Love, Marlo

P.S. I almost forgot, but Tommy is over here poking me in the ribs. He won't let me forget. He wanted to get on himself and write you, but he has forgotten his tag and password, so I offered (if you can call being pushed and prodded to the computer weary and bleary eyed by Tommy to do this email.) Anyway, I guess in a way I did offer, because he himself is in no shape for typing. He can't keep his paws or tail straight -yep- he's got the shakes!! He is getting close to being completely without any of his stash. And Tommy in the best of moods is no angel, so you can just imagine what he will be like without the green stuff. I hate to think about it! So, Grace, could you please send some catnip before I have more puncture wounds? (Tommy bites when he's mad-bad kitty!!) That is if Mulligan can spare some and you have grown some this year - if it is possible. We would appreciate it.
emoticon

Hi everyone!
The Poisoners Handbook was fascinating! A history of forensic medicine - the basis for the plots on CSI! I really, truly enjoyed it. Thanks so much!

I am busy working in the yard and took a short break to look something up on the internet, so I hopped in here to say hi and thank you. Now I must get back to work. More soon -

Dear Grace and Irene,

Have you tried massage or accupuncture, Grace? That might help with the injury that you have caused to your shoulder. I am not sure how it works...sometimes they won't work on you when you have an injury with massage, they say it is "contraindicated". Then, accupuncture would be better. It is very effective too if you get a doctor that is good at it, especially a real Chinese doctor:)

I am glad that you liked the book. The author, Deborah Blum, was excited when she was speaking with me, because it is up for an Agatha Award for best Non-fiction. I guess it is a novel, but it has a lot of truth and science in it, so they consider it non-fiction. I don't know if it won or not. She should have found out by now.

My family is going on vacation, so I will be home with just Tommy. I will be busy though. I will be handling things for my brother while he is away including his work. He has already given me his email to check each day. We haven't yet begun to work on the yard to this house. There is so much that needs to be done. It is a BIG job ahead of all of us! There are a lot of centipedes that come into the house here. I throw out twenty of them every night. I pick them up and throw them out the door. My sister-in-law and niece get grossed out, because they don't see how I can touch them, hehe. But they don't bite and I like them better than spiders or cockeroaches any day! Still, it is a nuisance...

I am still losing weight just slower. I will keep at it. I think what is helping the most is staying away from sugar.

I just got the new issue of the "Cat Fancy" magazine, so that is what I am reading right now. What are you reading, Irene?

Dear Irene and Marlo -
Sounds as if everyone is busy - busy. I've been going gangbusters getting garden eds prepared and in doing so seem to have aggravated the tendonitis in my right shoulder/upper arm. The pain is NOT very nice at all.

I'm working through several Lisa Lutz books right now, and The Poisoner's Handbook which was a gift from a very kind and thoughtful friend. Hope you are having fun. I need to get back to work -

Dear Irene and Grace,

I read all of Madeleine Engle's books when I was young. I really liked them. I got to go to another author event at the the downtown Orlando library this past Thursday at noon. Five local authors talked about their books, I bought one and got it signed. It is a children's book called, "A Nest for Celeste", about Audubon and the drawing of the birds. Celieste is a mouse character. The pictures are very cute and Henry Cole the author drew them himself.

Wow! Six miles!! That is a long way. I don't think I have done that in a long time. I did the March of Dimes walk when I was eight years old. That was a long, long time ago, hehe. Very good, Irene! Keep it up.

I am still following pretty closely the Atkins diet, but don't seem to be losing weight anymore. It is disappointing, because I need to lose a lot more:)! I have to get going, my brother is leaving for work and I am going to help them out. I will be gone for a week, but I will get back on when I get back.

Grace, hope your Mother is better too. Nice talking with both of you. Miss our conversations. Love, Marlo

Hi Grace and Marlo,

Haven't been here for a while - just wanted to say hi. Grace, I hope that your mother is doing well after her surgery. These aging parents....it is NOT easy. As we all know.

Marlo - how exciting to go to that book thing. I know if it had been me, I would have been struck dumb talking to the authors. I KNOW because I met Madeliene L'Engle once, and I really was struck dumb.

Grace, I see that you are back out in your garden again. Good for you. I am too, but it feels so overwhelming - everything is overgrown and weedy. I really don't know where to begin.

As for diet and exercise - not much change with me. EXCEPT I did participate in the Vancouver SunRun (as a walker) last weekend, with a team from work. It is a 10 kilometer walk/run - that is just over 6 miles. Anyway, I did it! And have felt much more energized since. Now I just have to work on the eating part......

Anyway, all the best to both of you.

Irene

Renewed determination. I WILL do this!

Hi Grace and Irene! I went to the author's event at UCF. The scariest part was finding the University without getting lost, but my brother had schooled me in on the directions so well it went off without a hitch. That was great! It was a blast talking one on one with all those big time authors, them with little ol' me, hehe! I had a lot of fun and got my books signed too.

How is your Mom doing, Grace? How are you holding up to all the extra work?

I have stopped losing weight on Atkins, I think because I am eating too much fat and cream. I need to cut back a little:) And I need to add exercise. I am trying to sit on my laurels and I can't do that or I will never get down to goal. I have a long way to go yet.

How are you both doing with your diets?
Love, Marlo and Tommy

Hi Graceomalley! Thank you for the encouragement:) I wish you could go with me to the writer's event also. I would love to have you with me. I will be going alone and facing those authors one on one! I haven't really made any new friends yet good enough to go with me here where we have moved to. I am working on it...

I am sorry about your Mom. I hope the doctors were able to correct the problem for her and that now she will get better? You will make her gardens look like the palace gardens, you are so good with plants! She will love what you do with her garden. How nice that you will be able to spend some time with her and hopefully things will get back to normal again.

Talk about big bellies, he he! I wipe Tommy off with a wash cloth once a week, because he tries to clean himself, but he just can't reach. His belly gets in the way and his tongue touches air, so sad! I just got a digital camera, so when I figure out how to use the contraption, then I can get some pictures downloaded here. I will experiment with Tommy.

FABULOUS! FANTASTIC! SUPER-DUPER!
That is just wonderful news about your weight loss! I am so proud of you for sticking it out.

That book/author event at the University sounds like fabulous fun. Wish I could be there with you for it. Enjoy!

I haven't been doing as well as I might. I've been getting in exercise, but not eating as I should ALL of the time and not really losing anything as a result. My mom's been sick and had open heart surgery to fix a leaking valve in her heart on the 18th of Feb. I have siblings there with her and I plan to go when she gets home from the rehab facility and work in her gardens for her, which will make he very happy, but it has been very stressful indeed.

I can relate to Tommy being a chubby cat. Mulligan is turning into a big old fatso hairball. He loves to lie on his back with his chubby fuzzy belly exposed - I think because he knows nobody can resist giving him a belly rub!

Hi Graceomalley and Irene! I am sorry that I did not check back sooner and respond. For some reason, I am not getting the posts in my email anymore, so I thought no one was writing back yet. I am glad you are both still here and doing well. That is hard to be so far from your parents, Irene, but it is good of you to make the effort to go and see them. I just bought the whole set of C. S. Lewis's Chronicle of Narnia stories. I read them when I was young and liked them. I got a paperback set from the Children's Book of the Month Club. I am going to give them to my niece as a present.

I have been reading Cat Fancy Magazines, which are very interesting:) And I am reading another non-fiction book ( I know I know, how dull is that?!) Dr. Atkins Age Defying Diet. I am interested in his books, because his diet is working really good for me and nothing had helped me so much before. I am down to 256 pounds and I feel great! I am not tired anymore. I still don't like the food that much, meat and vegetables, but I like protien shakes and protien bars. I am happy with the weight loss, because I just started the diet at the start of the new year, January 1st. I was weighing about 290 and now I am about 256, so that is what? I am not very good at math, he he! I have to get my calculator, for shame! The calculator says 34, so 34 pounds!

April 16th at the University of Central Florida, they are going to have 70 authors giving lectures and signing books, so that is where I am going that day. I am going to try to get some books signed hopefully. I want to send one to Graceomalley. What about you, Irene? Would you like a book, too? It is called "The Poisoner's Handbook" by Deborah Blum. I would need your address, so I can send it to you. The book looks interesting. It is about forensic science and poison during the Jazz age the 1920's.

Tommy is doing good. I don't know if he has lost any weight, but I take him outside every day and he gets exercise. He is just a plump kitty. emoticon

Now, I am going to change the weight measure on the board. How fun is that?! I love to make it go down. So, what diets are you both doing right now? Are you following a specific diet? What is your weight loss strategy?

Hi Marlo and Debi (and anyone else) - I am just back from a two week trip to Ontario to visit my parents. A good trip, but not an easy one. They are not in terrible health, but both have health issues, especially my mother. It is really hard to be so far away (3,000 miles).

What I am reading (rereading) right now: Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguo. I read it a few years ago, and just watched the movie based on the book, and now I want to reread the book to compare.

While I was in Ontario, I reread a lot of books by CS Lewis.

So how is everyone else doing?

Irene

Renewed determination. I WILL do this!

Hi Marlo -
Sorry it took me so long to respond - I've been busy, busy, busy (as usual) and hadn't been on Spark at all for days. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am so happy for you and pleased for your success! Yes - you will have to add in exercise, but don't try to doit all at once. Start with a few exercises you are comfortable doing and do those every day, or ever other day. Build up the amount you do at a reasonable rate. Just keep the fath and stick with it. You are doing fabulously!!!!
Love,
Debi emoticon

Dear Grace and Irene,

I have lost 11 1/2 pounds on the first two weeks of Atkins. I did the best of the whole family. My brother lost five pounds. I don't know what the rest of the family lost. Plus, I lost inches too. This diet is really working good for me. I know it is the diet, because I have tried just not eating and didn't lose weight, so it is the combination and the type of food that Dr. Atkins has us eating that is helping.

I have hope that maybe I can get trim again like I was in my twenties! Wouldn't that be nice? Now, I have to add exercise for me and Tommy :)

Love, Marlo

Hi Irene and Grace! It is Marlo:) I have a lot of things I want to get involved in to this year, sewing and a little gardening around my room area, plus I want to organize my books better. I am interested in their monetary values and how to go about selling books. My niece wants to take guitar at a local college with me and I am looking forward to that later this summer too. I have a lot of fun activiities to keep me occupied, since I don't know really how to do any of them!

I think the family is going to weigh in on Monday, so I will post in on my weight and let you know what I lost the first two weeks on Atkins and how my family did as well. I don't have headaches anymore or feel weak, so that is a good thing. I like the diet a lot, because you can eat and still lose weight. It does seem kind of unbelievable. It is a lot easier than Weight Watchers.

Dolls Nest sounds interesting, Irene. I am still reading the Atkins diet book. I have it next to my bed, but it is taking me a long time to finish it! It isn't like reading fiction:) Love, Marlo

Hi Grace and Marlo,
Happy new year! Ouch, Grace, I have a bunion too - so far have managed to avoid surgery. How long is the recovery time for that?

As for what I plan to do in 2011 - I am upping my walking. Which I have done up and down sporadically. Haven't done a lot lately, but am doing more now. And am wearing a pedometer. My goal is 10,000 steps daily. Made it yesterday and today.

As for my reading - currently a murder mystery by a Canadian author, Gail Bowen - it is called Nesting Dolls.

No gardening for me right now Grace - it's pretty mild in our part of Canada usually, but we have snow today. However, in the spring, I plan to get out into the garden more.

Irene

Renewed determination. I WILL do this!

Brrr, Grace! That sounds really cold. I hope that you are able to get all your gardening done before the snowpile hits you. I can't even imagine what that is like living here in Florida all my life. I have my heater on and it is in the 40*s! That is my personal heater on top of the central heater that my brother runs in the house. What a wimp I am :) he he!

Irene, sorry that I did not mention you in my last post. I didn't mean to do that. You are always definitely included:) You mentioned that you want to get ten minute exercise sessions in. Did you get the recent Sparkpeople mailer that was sent out about the Sparkpeople challenge? It is a 28 day bootcamp that has ten minute exercise videos that you do every day for a month. I am thinking of trying eventually. Probably a little later on.

We are still doing the Atkins. I have stopped having headaches and don't feel as weak anymore either. I have lost about eight pounds so far. It is the first week. We are going to officially weigh in as a family after two weeks and then I will record my weight and do so on Sparkpeople too and keep track here. I think it will be easy to lose the weight. It has been so far, yippeeeeeee!!!!

Grace, Atkins does allow soy and tofu, I think. I am not sure. I need to finish his book to know what exactly is allowed and what isn't. I know that the diet bars he sells and the Atkin's diet shakes are made with soy. So, I am assuming it is allowed??

Irene, what are you reading now? Grace, I hope you have a good book set aside while you are snowed in:)

Good for you, Marlo! Stick to the chicken and you can make burgers and stuff with ground turkey, too. I don't eat much meat, but have really learned to enjoy Morningstar Farms soy meat replacement products. Can you substitute that stuff for the meat in Atkins diet? like a Soy burger instead of a beef burger? You might try to find out about that.

I've got a bunch of yard work to finish up - clearing dead stuff out of garden beds - today while it is "warm" in the 40s, because an artic front is coming in over night and tomorrow is going to be in the 20s and Monday and Tuesday in the low teens for temperature outside. I need to get this done before dark today and before it is too cold outside tomorrow to be out there. We're supposed to get snow from Sunday afternoon through Monday, so I have to take my opportunity when it is there. Happy New Year wishes!

Hi Grace! History is very interesting, much more so than fiction. It is hard to believe the things that have really happened especially war.

So, we started the Atkins diet on Monday. It has been about two or three days of following it intensely. We are all feeling the effects, because we are doing it strictly, no sugar, no caffeinated coffee (I was drinking 4 big cups a day with lots of sugar, yikes!) I have had a headache for the past two days, so I have had to take Advil. The food is filling and good. I have not been hungry, which is really nice. The only trouble is that I am basically a vegetarian, so this is whole new territory for me and my body has to get adjusted to eating so much meat. I just took oil of oregano tonite and am feeling better. I got on the scales though and I am excited, plus just looking at myself and I can see a difference. Three days ago I was weighing 279 and now I am weighing 273 and I just was not losing weight before. So, I will see....I will let you know if it really works. I am doing it for health reasons as well as weight loss. Besides red meat, you can eat chicken and fish and eggs. It is tolerable. Plus Atkins has products out like shakes and bars that are good to supplement with. Then, once you lose the weight, you go on maintenance where you can add back some carbs if you don't gain weight. I would definitely like to add back fruit. I know fruit is very good for you. But I also know being as heavy as I am is very bad for you too. I was heading toward diabetes.

That is the book I am reading right now "The Atkins New Diet Revolution" by Dr. Atkins. You can find them at all the Used Book Stores and even Goodwill. They are floating around everywhere.

And Tommy Siamese needs to lose some pounds too. He still needs to get his picture up:) Love, Marlo

I am recuperating from surgery on my right foot for bunion/hammer toe. Not too much fun and it does restrict my ability to exercise much at all for several months, which is not too good. I am pretty much limited to between 20 and 50 reverse crunches each day.

Just finished reading FIRST FAMILY by Joseph Ellis about John and Abigail Adams. It is a work fashioned largely from information and details provided by John and Abigail in letters they wrote, as well as some letters written to them or about them by contemporaries, such as Thomas Jefferson. It is a different perspective than I have found in other works about the revolutionary war and I really enjoyed the more personal, insider sort of view point this provided. Well written and interesting.

As to what I am going to do in the New Year - pay more attention, follow rules better, get thinner. SOME HOW!!!!!

Thanks for the email Grace O Malley :) I know that I have not been here much.Hi Marlo!

Grace, what are you recovering from? By the way I did skim the other thread and saw that you read The Help. I read it earlier on this year and really liked it.

Plans for what to do in 2011 - this is the year to get serious for me.

I am lucky enough to have a daughter in law who is holistic nutritionist (got qualified two years ago) and I have had a few sessions with her. It is helping me get my impulsive eating under control.

So, my plans for 2011 - stick to the eating plan my dil has devised for me. And exercise regularly. Initially 10 minutes a day.

And GET OUTSIDE! I don't do this enough. Working full time it is not always easy to find time. But I will make it. Getting outside really grounds me, and does motiviate me to exercise more.

Marlo has shared her plans, what are yours Grace?

I also plan to read more. :)

Irene (with stars for Christmas)

Renewed determination. I WILL do this!

Hi Grace! Good to hear from you. I hope that you are recovering. Well, basically the whole family is getting desperate here in this house about weight loss. This whole year we have talked about doing Weight Watchers, but didn't get started because we were moving etc. and my sister-in-law didn't get with it. I guess she doesn't feel motivated to do it for some reason. So, now my brother last night while working brings up the idea of the Atkins diet and we of course are all horrified at that. However, on retrospect, I considered it a bit more than I would have because I have read info from different experts such as the Liverdoctor saying that most people are allergic to gluten and getting a diet that is gluten free helps weight loss. So, now I need to go to the library and read up on the "New" Atkins diet, because my brother says there is one that the Hospitals are using now that they have improved on, so we are all seriously considering trying it. I would love to lose weight, just 20 pounds to begin with, then I could switch back to Weight Watchers.

The whole family is getting serious about weight loss for the new year and exercise goals, even Tommy Siamese has to lose weight or he is heading for diabetes. We are all getting prepared and ready for a new lifestyle change. How about everybody else?

Love, Marlo
