We do all have our priorities. I used paperplates the while my kids were little, no one would clean the dishes except me and I couldn't do it. so we threw them away. we had beans one more night a week! I bought everything I could at thrift stores and I took the kids on field trips weekly in the summer. And paid for them to go to private school from pre-school through college. Still doing it. Habit now I guess!

Happy Sparking

Everyone has their own priorities. I'm one of those "pinch a penny until it screams" person in many ways, as I mostly shop at the Dollar and Discount Stores. I'm always looking for ways to save a penny or two on daily living expenses and I use vinegar to clean my windows and if a drain gets stopped up in the house I try vinegar and baking soda before calling a plumber. My landline phone went bye-bye about a year ago. I have a cell phone that the company I work for pays part of as I'm on call 24/7. I do have a bundle package with basic cable and internet service. I bowl one night a week and play Bunco with the ladies a couple of nights a month for entertainment and I don't eat out except for special occasions, most nights I am at home and watching TV or playing on the computer. So I think we all have our own levels of being thrifty and strive to do the best we can in today's economy.

I appreciate your comment.

There are degrees of frugal, from champagne-tastes-on-a-beer-budget frugal all the way down to (want-to-commit-hara-kiri-)pinch-a-penny-'
till-it-screams frugal ...

I really WOULD commit hara-kiri if I had to be SO far down that continuum ... because that feels like being choked to me. While I still have let's say, "My Student Loan", I could just pay it back a little slower ... [I don't like crash dieting either, btw]...

Vinegar has many uses, is a green solution to house cleaning and cleans up windows better than many chemical solutions. Many people including myself shop at dollar stores. It's as we've discussed many times here on the team, you live within your means. The plans you currently have aren't cheap, they are smart ways to budget your money and live within your means. Those who called you cheap were wrong, its wisdom that creates those types of plans. By the way, some of the best buys I've done are from garage sales and flea markets. That I learned from my Dad, the art of buying at auctions and art of negotiations at garage sales and fleas markets.

I make do well without cable. I don't have cable for my internet either (but then I do have a land line). My cell phone is pay-as-you-go/per diem.

If I lose my job, only my voice land line remains, and I don't have to renew my cell phone ...

My DSL is painfully slow, so out it goes and I will rely on libraries and internet cafes ...

I was called cheap when I hatched these plans.

Somehow, though, I still feel that if I really, really were cheap: i.e., mousing around in dollar stores looking for the latest junk all the time, washing out all my plastic bags, using vinegar to clean my house ... I would go utterly insane ... !

I need to get my SparksSavings going. I am just afraid of what it's going to tell me! lol

Like cut cable (I need internet for work) .. or cell phone (which I need to track down my teenage children!!!).

/sigh ... so that cuts into my grocery budget. But we're doing ok.

Think if boils down to the person and which gender wants to manage the money. I think both genders are very capable of doing or learning to do the finances. During my married life, I was the one that handled the finances simply because my spouse didn't want to bother with it. After the divorce, I didn't realize how lucky I was in knowing how to handle my finances, as I have friends who are clueless when it comes to balancing a checkbook as their spouse always did took care of the bills, etc.
One good point in the article for ladies is to be prepared and have a nest egg if possible, in case of a divorce or death of a spouse. While married, I had no financial worries..maybe because of the two incomes..or two can live cheaper than one....now I struggle. So, interesting article..but think either gender is capable.

I disagree. It doesn't matter the gender, what matters is what one learns about money, how to budget, how to spend and attitude.

I agree with the premise of the article that women are not mindless people who focus on buying shoes and stuff...and that it's time the focus changes from thinking that women are too stupid to manage money to realizing that women are quite capable. It's very sexist to say that women are mindless spenders buying shoes...and I think women like Suzie Ormen are changing this perspective.

women have had to balance the budget for many years so it stands to think that they can be better at personal managers . one fact to remember though is that men are good at it also . my mom was a better manager of money much better then my dad . He spent it as fast as he made it . If not for mom he would not have had anything in the end of his life .
