i am scrapbooker/cardmaker and i do craft shows and sell at local shops. one thing i am able to do is make up gift baskets of handmade cards or give a mini scrapbook album for gifts. everyone can always use cards and a scrapbook is perfect for any occasion (wedding, baby, family, etc).
other than that i'd say shop all year. get a tote just for presents and when you see something on sale or that is on clearance pick it up and put it in the gift tote. then, when christmas or bday comes along you'll have something on hand. now don't go buying everything because it's a good deal, but if you know you need something, pick it up cheap!
Ways I've given without money is making certificates by hand for my services. One year I gave two young mothers 5 gift certificates each for 1 hr babysitting services. Their mother (my bff) said they'd love it because while they know I'll babysit, this way they don't feel like they are imposing on me. I've also given gifts of housecleaning and meals. Or wrote a poems and made them really fancy to give as a stand-alone gift.
With the Holiday's coming and people starting to shop for gifts I wanted to put this idea out there. It is great for those who are hard to shop for and have everything. This is free and not a gimick or anything.
Even if you don't need this maybe this is something you can do for you family. Give the Gift of yourself.
