Crazy eh!!

I had similar happen when I was 18yrs old and living in the city. I set up hydro for my new apt and recieved a huge bill. I never was behind in my previous apt and was stunned. I contacted and was informed it was a back bill for when I lived in Kamloops. Problem was, I had never lived in Kamloops. It took almost 6 months and intervention from a consumer protection organization to resolve the issue. Basically what happened was that my name and the person's name owing the money was close, so they simply threw it onto my bill and said "there you pay it, someone has to." What was the most frustrating part was convincing them that the name of the person who owed wasn't my name - they even had the gall to inform me that I was lying about the spelling of my name! Being 18yrs old, it created a ton of stress and worry, as I feared they'd shut off my hydro until I paid the bill. That's where the consumer organization - that the gov't has since cut back on, which is a real shame - came in handy, as they protected me from the harrassment and ensured that I would not lose hydro while the issue was investigated.

So yeah, its so frustrating and really, quite a laugh because they are so certain they can harrass until you pay when in fact, I say take it to court. Hard to prove you have to pay when its clearly not your bill!!

I had a good laugh this morning. I got a call from a "collection" agency today. Before he even said any more, I though what haven't paid I thought I was caught up on everything! He said he was calling in regards to an old MasterCard bill. I told him I never had a MC, which I am pretty sure I haven't and I know I have paid off all my credit cards or have consolidated them. He then came across with an attitude!

I was ready for a fight! He then asked if the last 4 digits of my Social Security was ####. I told him nope, he was way way off. He then asked if there was another person in my house hold by the same name. I laughed and said why on earth would I have someone by the same name in my household! (ok it could have been jr/sr thing, but a not a female). He then hung up without saying anymore. Ha, so take that collection agency...keep diggin' for that person that has my name but not the same SSN, you won't find her at this number!!! This is so not my credit card debt!!

I was just stating to Linda that working through conflicts to a satisfactory conclusion is all part of working through debt - its not such a bad exercise to sort out misunderstandings. I appreciate Kim that you stuck through it and we were able to work it out. It's much better to clear things up than wonder.

And all the advice on the board, the good news and the frustrations, it'll all serve to further sort out things for us all - in terms of lowering interest and reducing debt.

No you didn't diminish my good fortune. I guess I was just having a super bad day and was on the offenseive. I apologize to everyone.

The only problem I ever had was with Wells Fargo. They were rude and no help what so ever. I know a lot of people say they have issues with Discover. I haven't. They have always worked with me until my debt go really bad, yet they still helped but suspended my card and then eventually cancelled my card. I was ok with that since I hadn't used it in a year, so I didn't miss it!!

Good luck everyone!!

Sorry, I didn't mean to diminish your good fortune. I am very happy for you. It is good to know that some companies will work with you. I posted to see if anyone else had good luck with Chase to maybe help me out. In reading your posts, I know what companies I may want to look at doing business with in the future.

A lot of the difference experiences also can come about by which card company you are dealing with. There are so many factors involved like how much is owed on the card, the current average interest rate, how often late charges have been applied to the account and probably even the mood of the person on the other end of the line. About a year or so ago, I started having financial difficulties and had balances on 3 credit cards. I was paying the minumum payment but was always late so not only was the high interest being added to the balance but high late fees too. I wrote letters and made numerous telephone calls explaining my situation and to see what could be done. 2 cards agreed to lower my interest rates and delete late fees, if I closed the account. Which I did. The other card refused to help in anyway and the balance grew to double of what was eventually owed.
So, yes, I feel each case will have a different ending.

Sass - I have to say I did have a lousy day yesterday, one thing after another and just took offense I guess. I am over this now and have moved on. I did email you personally and hope you understand what I said as now I see what your are saying to clarify it.

Sorry for the misunderstanding! We all do have different experiences.

Kim, it is good that you shared a positive change and we all appreciate the good news. And the tips. We've all had our own experiences, so sharing differences also part of discussions mainly when someone brings up that they were having difficulties doing what someone else done successfully. Its great to share positive stories or we can be covered in darkness, feeling that there is never a light at the end of the tunnel.

If this is aimed at my post, that is my experience and it doesn't diminish your positive experience. Nor is it meant to diminish.

To clarify, a member mentioned she wasn't successful bringing down her interest and my story hopefully helps her to know she's not alone. Plus the tips are from financial institutions that make and break credit ratings, which is really helpful when attempting to lower interest.

I hope that clears things up.

Its been my experience to never have interest rates lowered - ever. Never ever ever. My boss called up, bang, they lowered her interest significantly. Me, they hang up on. Or yell. Or raise the interest. Which is why I ended up going to a credit counsellor. So I can relate when you say that you couldn't get it lowered. I've had my interest jump as high as 10% in one bill. So yeah, it sadly doesn't happen for all. As for when to recontact them, I'd advise waiting at least 6 months. The one thing that I recall from all the inservices I've attended with banks and finance institutions regarding credit was this - if you make several requests or applications for credit or to lower interest, get a loan etc month after month, week after week, it will show up as a negative mark on your credit report. The advice is to wait 6months to 1yr before making a 2nd request.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. I don't get how they can raise rates just because rising costs. They are just out to make money. I never had a Chase card. I've always had Discover and had no problem dealing with them regarding rates and this card I just had adjusted was a State Farm Visa. Yes I have my insurance through them and have had it for years. I looked at my account and the rate went from 24.24% to 9.9%.

Keep trying! Call them next month and see what they say.

Way to go! I called Chase to try and lower my interest rate yesterday. They refused. I spoke to a manager and they refused. I went back on my account for as long as was online and there were no late payments at all. I explained this to the rep and he said it was not because of late payments, it was because of rising costs. I don't understand how they can raise the rate 3.25% in 6 months!

Glad it worked out for you!

I have one positive thing financial this week. I have a credit card that I was late on a few pymts earlier this year. I called to see if they would lower my rate and they told me, "pay on time for 3 months" and we will review it. I paid in early June and then made another pymt in late June for my July pymt, which would have been the 1st on-time pymt. I did not make a pymt in July. I made another on-time pymt in Aug, which I was told 1 more month to go before they reviewed. I documented this information on my bill. I paid on-time in Sept and asked to have it reviewed. The girl told me that I had another month to go because I did not pay in July.

I had to argue this because my July pymt was in June, so why would I pay again especially if I don't have the money. I explained to her about the conversation in June and Aug. No one said anything about having to make pymt in July. So I told her I wanted to speak with a supervisor. This woman called me back and told me they would pull the tapes from my conversations and review my acct and it should be 3-5 business day before I hear back.

I heard back today left on my answering machine and they lowered my rate from about 24-25% to whatever the original rate was...I will have to look that up...

I am so happy about that!! It will lower my payments and it will lower the balance due!! I am going to make sure I keep paying on time as I don't want to be late again!!! I am going to try to keep the higher pymts to make the balance go down faster.

I knew I could prove that customer service rep wrong on this issue, because I had it documented!!
