Yup, like I mentioned, we all have our ways and that's cool. Sounds frustrating with all you've done thus far to get a 2nd job and sounds like you've done lots to get there. I hear you about the standing in line for 5 min. I went through all that in the eighties, including being homeless - luckily I had people, so I was able to couch surf. Its frustrating and disheartening. So good on you for working on staying positive with it all and hopefully something works out for you soon, with the jobs.

Nursing is very intimate and if I was trained in that it would be different. I have done that kind of work many moons ago and decided it wasn't for me. I don't know how else to put it, I just don't like "working" in someone elses home.

Are far as putting myself out there... yes I have! I tried contacting the people to about dog sitting or on the site I was listed on they coule post the hours they needed, which mostly was in the afternoons. I don't know what else I can do because people want the hours they need and not the hours I need! I work nights and companies want people to work those shifts. I can't because I cannot change my schedule at my full-time job. They don't want to even have late morning or early afternoons because they don't want to break up a shift if it is busy at lunchtime. It is either that or they hire someone that doesn't have a job, or they are seniors or teenagers. That is what I have seen in my area. Why they don't hire me is beyond me. Most of the time I think it is because I am over qualified besides the shift issue. I even stood in line for 2 hours to fill out an appl and a 5 min interview along with a couple thousand people. That is how bad it is here.

Also as far as cutting back in other areas to allow for child care, I can see that, but in my area people are not cutting back for their pets. I know, I had a business that sold pet supplies and goodies. It didn't go anywhere. No one was interested at all. It did fine for about 2 months and that was it. This area I live in is the auto industry and we have been hit hard!

Okay, done!

Interesting on how you see working with the human body in intimate personal manner less invasive than being in a home, vaccuming, dusting and cleaning windows. There is something very personal when you sit with a young adult who is recieving hospice care (for example) in a home all night while the family sleeps or go in a back door that you hold a key of, to turn a MS client in mid-night, who cannot turn herself. Heck folding laundry and washing dishes was nothing. I respect the differences in opinion though. Different ways of looking at things eh. Like I mentioned its not for everyone and that's cool. You'll find what works for you.

Regarding dog sitting, since you saw that people were looking for this service, did you contact them? Whenever I'm looking for work, I put myself out there and hit the streets - in one way or another, be it through word of mouth or banging on doors. I know the way to do things now is to hit the computer and it is a very useful tool for job hunting. And for some employers, the only way to find a job through their company. I still though believe in old fashioned foot work. I agree with you that during hard times people will hold back on paying for certain services. Usually though when it comes to animals and children, people tend to cut back in other areas to accomodate the expense. Like I said though I'm sure you'll figure something out. All the best with it all.

And yes, totally its difficult to deal with murders in your backyard, absolutely. No matter when it occurs.

I do have to agree that the people that are doing the robbing and killing are not of a moral nature to begin with. It is just that there has been a lot of murders lately! We had 3 murders within a week, so whatever the excuse is, it is horrible and when it is close to home or where you used to live doesn't make it any better. I also agree that media blows things out of proportion.

Personally I see home nursing completely different than cleaning. I worked for a guy that worked out of his home. I felt so uncomfortable doing that I couldn't do the job (admin asst work). To me it is just too personal of an area. If I was a nurse, it may be different. Just my opinion as to why I can't do it!

I would do dog sitting/walking, but I put out an ad on an on-line service for several months problably close to a year and never got one hit even when I saw there were people close to my house that were looking for sitters. Again with the economy, I don't see much work available in that area where I live. We are very hard pressed at this time. I know I can't afford to hire someone or even leave my dogs at a kennel, so I haven't even gone on vacation or long weekend away in a several years. Again just my opinion!

SophieMae, its actually a fallacy that people turn to crime when recessions hit - what researchers have found is that people who turn to crime were already not the most moral people in society and used the economy as an excuse to carry out actions like theft.

And media tends to focus on those crimes during recessions to show how horrible the world is.

As for the other, stating that is a way to rationalize bad decisions and for gov't, its just another way to rationalize cutbacks. Denial is a great way to build up money for the Olympics.

What has been found though, is that families struggle with recessions - as we are all very much aware - and if there is any rip prior to the heightened stress in the family, it'll rip completely apart. Rather than crime, what seems to occur - at least after all these years I've worked in the field and the number of recessions I've experienced - is that alcohol and drug abuse increase, child neglect increases and violence increases. So yeah, its crazy in my mind (and many in BC agree) to cut back on services that'll actually save money at the end of the day. As prevention and support in the moment will prevent destruction down the road - which costs tons to "repair." Ah well, gov't, powerful arm that is difficult to fight - yet we are fighting, so never know what'll happen. After all, arts fought and not only recieved back what was cut, they recieved back even more!

I guess since I've worked in homes in far more intimate manner than cleaning since I was a young adult, I don't see cleaning as stepping into someone's space. I was a home nurse for years, to supplement income and now, I still work in homes, as a counsellor. So yeah, to me its just all part of a job. Oh and I did do housecleaning and cooking as a job too - forgot about that - when there was still homecare funding.

Ah well, not for everyone. Maybe you can think of something else that you can do that doesn't require much overhead or job interviews. That's the trick that is always discussed - figure out what you enjoy doing and then, see if that can fit into a job. Like dog walking for folks who enjoy dogs and such.

Hopefully something will sort out for you.

"children aren't really affected by family violence, so its not that important a program" That is the craziest think I ever heard! I cannot believe someone actually said that!

What is the world coming too? It seems recently that we've had so many murders/shootings in my city, how could that not affect me? One was right down the road from where I used to live...now that is scary. I am glad I moved from there as it was starting to turn bad when I moved. People are robbing people, stores, etc because of the financial crises we are in.

I know my cousin does that and has been doing it for years. I rather clean a church than a home personally. I would feel like I was invading someone territory. Not for me, I don't think I could do it.

Sorry you didn't get the 2nd job. Is there any way that you can do private cleaning for people? I did it under the table, word of mouth and it kept me in food and spending money. And it can be flexiable hours, so to work with your current job. I hope it works out for the current job you are in, that you don't lose that. In BC we are undergoing HUGE funding cuts and increased taxation, its hitting the news almost hourly now. Our agency so far has only had to cut back on training dollars. And our funder (Ministry for Children and Families) had a huge cutback, so now family support is on priority basis only - in other words, a crisis must occur for us to intervene and no more preventative work. In my program, Children Who Witness Violence (family), the Solictor General are now stating that children aren't really affected by family violence, so its not that important a program. BC is the 2nd highest domestic violence rate in Canada. I love cutbacks. *tongue in cheek* So yeah, I hear you on hoping for contracts to continue, totally get about that. Hopefully yours will be extended.

I can only hope and pray that things keep going as they have been this past month. I really do not want to work a 2nd job, but I will if need be. I don't like working to live, if you know what I mean...I think we are all doing that right now.

The job I have now is kind of iffy too. We are under a contract with another company that is to end in Dec, but if the product isn't approved by the FDA we may continue the contract for another 6 mos if negotiations go well. I hope they do!!

I finally got a call back last night. They decided to give it to a guy from that church that currently wasn't working. I am ok with that and really it doesn't surprise me. Maybe something else will come up! I've come this far with no 2nd job (almost a year) and things are slowly getting better. I know I can get through it as I have this past year even though it was difficult.

I had my interview last night. It lasted maybe 15 minutes. Not much information from me except what my affiliation with the church was, why I wanted the job, and if I had experience in that kind of work (cleaning as it was a custodial job). It would be 10-15 hrs/week making sure the sanctuary, foyers, offices, class rooms, and bathrooms were clean before services on Wed and Sun. During the winter they have a basketball program for kinds and several hundred people show up on Sat, so probably a lot would need to be done them. Also making sure the church is clean for weddings and funerals.

They will discuss my "application/interview" with the board on Monday and decide next week. Don't know how many other people applied for this job, but it would be interesting to know as I am sure there are members that need work/money too!

I hope so too! My boss just came up to me and asked if I wanted to work the day shift next week because of the one girl being off and she can't work it for her. I told her I would, but I just kind said in my head, "shoot I could be doing that interview on Weds...grrrr!". But working the day shift will also mean I get some overtime because I will have to wait for the person taking my shift shows up which would be around 5-5:30pm. WooHoo! So I hope the guy I interview with can do it on Sat. I hadn't heard anything back yet. I will keep you posted!!

I finally had a phone call regarding the custodian job at the church. The secretary called to set up an interview with one of the board members. Only think was that he wanted to do it at 6pm on Weds the 9th. I told her I couldn't do it because I work the 3-11pm shift and could not take off work to do it. I asked to see if he could do it on a Saturday. She said she would call him back and go from there.

Wish me luck that he can do it on a Sat. Seem like thinks are finally going my way and looking up!!!

I dropped off my resume at church and the secretary said she would give it to the pastor and then he would submit it to the board. "Chain of Command" as she said! I asked my mom if she knew who was on the board, but she didn't. She used to be a board member a long time ago!

I hope it works out for you. I cleaned homes under the table to supplement my income and I worked as a maintance person/janitor as a teen. It's hard work and at the same time, it felt good to see a place go from mess to clean. Keep us posted.

Pray or keep your fingers crossed that I get this 2nd job.

My mom informed me yesterday that they church is looking for a 2nd custodian. Not exactly my dream job and I hate cleaning my own house, but I can clean for some pay!!

All I know is that it is 15hrs/week and that I can work whatever hours that are convenient for me. I am sure it is just minimum wage, I didn't ask over the phone when I called, but it is better than nothing!!

So I am going to drop my resume off later today. Have somethings I need to get done at home outside first before I hop in the shower. I hope they truely take me into consideration as I know some of the people there know my situation!!
