Assalamualaikum sisters.

Thanks for bringing this to discussion. It's interesting to know about convert and revert and what are those referring to.

And alhamdullilah for a new sister :)

Assalmo Alykom sisters,

I am very happy with this discussion & I want to illustrate more about the concept of the innate knowledge.
Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him says in the hadith that: every human being born muslim but his parents turn him to be jew or christian.

Meaning that the original case is: coming to this life as a muslim.
Hence; when you convert to Islam, you return back to your innate.

My name is Fatima, nice to meet you.
Muslims usually use the word revert instead of convert, when referring to people who, were not born into Muslim family, and accepted Islam later in life.

There's only a slight difference: Muslims believe that every person is born into this world with knowledge of their Creator, of Allah. They may not know Islam, or Christianity or other religion but they have an innate knowledge of a Higher Being.
It's a natural knowledge, almost automatic, i guess similar to the way we are born knowing how to breathe, suck from mother's breast etc.. (think of an aethist who doesn't believe in any God, and yet in times of crisis or near-death moments, they start praying almost as if out of instinct)

This knowledge of Allah is part of the shahadah. (The other part being that Muhammad is the last messenger of Allah). Islam is the last revelation of Allah, the chosen religion for the rest of time. Islam reverts to that natural knowledge of Allah, that every person is born with, and it continues with that natural knowledge and builds upon it.

So when someone accepts Islam, they have come back to that natural knowledge, and thus we say they have come back or "reverted' to Islam.

But it's okay to use the word convert too. Revert just refers to that point of coming back to the natural beliefs of Allah and this world. (as opposed to the Christian trinity etc).

Hope that clears up some of the confusion, but reading over it, i think i may have confused you more? lol
