Today's thought is just a comical thought.....

Proverbs 17:22 says,

"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."

Some day I will tell you a situation where I saw this verse lived out in real life, between
two sisters.....do I have your curiosity up yet? Well, that is not for today!

Today we are just looking at the first part of this verse, why do people not laugh
when they get older? Is it our health? I am in so much pain all the time that many
times I just do not feel like laughing, but at the same time I might find myself laughing
at the birds out my window and the strange things they do. I will laugh with joy at some
of the things my grandchildren do, it amazes me. Then again I just might cry at some
of the things they might do. My son told me a dear story, a story of giving that happened
in his family as he tries to teach his children to give and to put other's needs before
their own, just as we tried to teach our children. It is so precious to see those principles
passed down to the next generation. And, then to hear of when the children do things
on their own accord, as he told me the story I just lost it and I cried and I cried. It was
ever so precious.

But, we need to laugh, its okay to laugh at a joke, a clean one. I will laugh at a video
I am watching, especially if it takes a turn differently than what I was thinking in my
head. I will laugh at a baby laughing, or I will laugh because the sun is shining.
Yes, I have plenty of reason to cry, but I can "choose" to laugh, I can choose to see
the glass half full rather than half empty. I can choose to see the blessings.

My husband and I celebrated our 42nd anniversary yesterday, yes, we are getting old,
and both with poor health. Everything we do takes such effort, yet, we are alive, we are
still mobile, we have so much to be thankful for. He needed to mow before we could
go on vacation and he was concerned if he would have the strength this week with
everything else he had to do. So he starts up his nice newly remodeled (a nice way
of saying refurbished second hand) mower. Mows for 10 minutes and I hear him pulling
in with the mower and thought, is he sick? No, he broke a belt. Oh, dear. So he gets
the push mower out and mows for a while, thankfully he started Tuesday, and there is
somewhere between 1 1/2 - 2 acres of grass to mow. So he has been trying to do a
little each day. Today he wanted to finish the mowing, but he was oh, so tired. He did
a few more things in here, he said do you see I am putting off the mowing as long as I
can? And I could see how tired he was. I was praying for him for strength AND feeling
guilty that I was not able to do any of the mowing and that in many cases he has to
help me with the things here in the house. As he went out the back door, it struck me,
a simple reward for getting a certain amount done. So I went and got his candy container out from under the bed (we are strange here) and I took 5 small peppermint patties and went out the front door. I gave each one a pitch in various directions. :-)
He mowed and mowed for a bit, and I think I would have noticed something silver
laying over to the side, maybe not, but he didn't. Then when he finally came upon the
first one, it took him by surprise, he stopped mowing picked it up and stood there and
ate it right on the spot. I had assumed he would grin and stick it in his pocket, he
mowed some more and stopped and ate the next one. It was so funny. I laughed and
laughed. I was so hoping no one would come past and see him stop and grab
something out of the grass and put it in his mouth. It made mowing more fun for him,
it made me laugh and it made a memory to share with our grandchildren. As I
walked away from the door I couldn't help but think of Proverbs 17:22 -
"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."
I am so thankful I can still laugh.

May your heart be merry today, and may it help heal some of your pain.

Love and prayers,

"Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice." Phil. 4:4

SODIUM - there is a product at Krogers with spices. It is called NoSalt. It is a sodium alternative, and I can't tell the difference. Try it, or talk to your doctor.

I like that, too, probably not as much as the others but a lot. We never had that at
home much, we are from the north, we had everything else porkish....pawnhaus,
pork puddin' and the rest.....

But I got a taste of some at a meal somewhere, really liked it, and then our local
Hardee's started serving it, and later Ryan's (which I am pretty sure is/was a
southern chain served it at their Saturday morning breakfast buffets so I always
had to have it if we went there which wasn't that often, thankfully.

My, that's good eaten. :-)

Yes, it is very difficult to exercise when you already have pain. I would love to be
able to get in more exercise. My back is bad, but my legs ache terribly and I keep
feeling like I am going to go down. I need to do more chair stuff, but I don't seem to
feel up to that most days.

We just have to keep trying!!!

Love and prayers to you,

So sorry you have this problem. It is next to impossible to stay away from too much
sodium....we are trying to do better. Our worst thing with salt is we both love bacon or
spam. Spam is actually worse than the bacon when it come to sodium....we are trying
to buy only low-sodium ones which are still high. This is only a once in a while thing,
but we "could" eat it all the time. :-)

The other week someone gave us ham and we were so thankful for it but my I could
feel it after we ate it. Hopefully right now things have calmed down and we should
be on a more even level with sodium.

Have a great day, and I hope you get a lot of walking in, how much do you walk per
day?

IF I FEEL I HAVE HAD TOO MUCH SALT I DRINK MORE WATER AND CUT BACK ON CHIPS, CRACKERS AND ETC.... I HAVE STOMACH FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. WORSE SOMETIMES THAN OTHERS. BUT WHEN I EAT OUT I USE TO HAVE TO GO TO BATHROOM 2 OR 3 TIMES. HOPE YOU FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG. I LIKE FOR EVERYTHING TO BE GOOD TOO. (BLOOD WORK).

I agree with you.....that may even be part of my problem right now, the last two days I
have eaten more (I shouldn't have, but I did) and my pain has increased, sometimes
I think its too much carbs, etc. But since I have lymphedema and the salt affects
me quickly maybe salt is more of the enemy.

I have this weird thing, I posted it some place else but I don't think here, almost every
time I eat out, sit down restaurant, fast food, etc. My kidneys seem to function differently.
My urine gets strong smelling, an ammonia smell, even sometimes the bowel, not sure.
At first I thought it was the chlorine in the fountain sodas, but I didn't have them and
it still did it, I thought fried foods? So I got salads, today it wasn't so bad but I wasn't
gone as long. It almost seems like it is worse if I have to just wait in the vehicle a prolonged period of time, my legs hanging down??? Maybe? But maybe its the sodium?
I need to figure this out. My kidneys test just a trace off, but the doctor doesn't seem
concerned, but it bothers me, something is not right.

Sodium gets in your tissue, I have been in the hospital for dehydration when I was
so full of fluid. :-( They said due to the lymphedema the fluid was trapped in my skin
but there was none getting to my organs where it was needed.

How are you doing weight wise, losing any? You don't need to say amounts, just
wondering.

Any improvement?

All kinds of things help with the pain, Vitamin D, if it is low also lowers the pain tolerances.

I am getting ready to head to bed for a nap....I overdid things yesterday and today is
an almost totally non-functional day. But it is what it is.....

Have a good day, my friend.

I am so sorry your back hurts so bad.....it does sound like arthritis...it seems to usually
be worse in the mornings, then the more you move the better it gets, still hurting if
you stress it or overdo it.

There was a time years ago my back was bad (that sounds funny, like its not bad now)
but anyhow, I would go to town and meet my sister once every couple week for breakfast
or I would see her here and there. I told her I was in pain, she knew at the time I had
a headache all the time, she would always question it because she couldn't understand
how I did all that I did if I had a "supposed headache." Then one morning she was
going somewhere and decided to drop something off at my house spur of the moment.
When she knocked at the door I met her and I was on crutches, she gasped and reacted
very strongly. "What is the matter with you?" I tried to tell her that I had been telling
her all along, granted I didn't mention the crutches, but I didn't need them every
morning. If I knew I was going to town I would get up and fight my way through the pain
until I was fairly mobile, it was bad but I would do it, then I could go to town and act
halfway normal. She felt really bad, I guess she had doubted what I saying all along.
She is 73 and I am 60, I am limited to my house except for doctors appointments and
very special ocassions, she is on the go every day, almost. I have over 30+ things
wrong with me, she has had nothing until recently there is something going on
where she is losing blood, not sure what and she doesn't seem concerned. I don't
think it should be brushed off but she seems okay with it.

Is it possible you might still need the multivitamin with iron? It is hard sometimes to
absorb iron. I forget if we talked about this, but have you ever tried magnesium to
help with the pain. It will not help the joint pain itself, but for some people, like me,
it will help the muscle pain which is a result of all the joint problems and issues. My
pain is bad but I do fair and can handle it if I am taking the magnesium. It is intolerable
if I don't take it.

Are you doing anythign special for Easter?

Have a grand week and a blessed Easter weekend.

Love and prayers,

How is everyone doing physically? I hope well.

I still have the constant pain, and lots of other health issues but I am trying to hang
in there. I have lost 20 pounds since January 1.

I hope this week goes well, enjoy that spring weather.

Wow! How pretty you made your Sparkpage....tell me something about yourself...nothing you are uncomfortable about....
For me, I am hopelessly sentimental. We are starting that horrible down-sizing
process, and I have saved everything....we just finished a week or two ago the
storage unit, and it is ready for some more things if necessary. Everything is numbered
and I have a list of things on the computer...and it is mostly in its right box. I have done
this for years but I would bring something home and then send it back to the storage unit
the next season, and I was many times forgetting to take it off the original box it was in, Etc.
We finished the attic this weekend. We had 40 boxes, and I condensed that down to
11 boxes to go to the storage unit. I would cry and then throw things away that no one
was going to want it only had special meaning to me. :-) Just from the attic I pitched
over 1800 cards or letters. All those beautiful cards and words and love thrown out.
I read most of them one more time. So I am weary.

I hope you have a great day today. Love and prayers,

I'm struggling taking anything stronger, but some days I do take it.

I went to my granddaughter's birthday party last night, it was nice, but very painful for me.
Anybody watching and paying attention can see I am in a lot of pain, some people actually
do not notice if they are too self absorbed. I always tried to ignore it around people, that is
getting harder and harder to do. But once I am away from the grandchildren where I can
let down, I will sometimes dissolve into tears, it might be on the way home or once I get
to my couch, and I have to cry.....the horrible pain sets in in the legs. It might mean spending a couple days primarily in bed, but at least I got to be there for the party.

Thanks for sharing AND for listening. :-)

Wow, some similarities I have osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spondolyosis,
(spine falling forward and vertebrae cracking, spondolythesis, vertebrae falling forward
and broken the whole way through, antithesis, the spine falling backwards and cracked,
I also have spurs, it used to be just in the lower back which is affecting my legs really
bad, but it has slowly worked its way up the spine and affects my arms, their movement,
the use of them, my neck which causes pain and dizziness and visual problems and
so much more....it even affects my jaws and the way I bite down and my eys.

I keep trying to remember it could be worse but right now today the pain was so bad.

Tom0rrow is another day.. Love and prayers,

How is you spine? Have you had x-rays done? I have both arthritis's, but my spine
is also a mess......it would worth being sure it is not anything there so you would know
how to treat it......mine can't be helped a lot, but for some a chiropractic adjustment
can help a lot. Drinking lots of water, magnesium rich foods? I use magnesium
but I do not know your meds.

I am so sorry you are having pain, hopefully you will feel some relief soon.

Are you enjoying St. Patrick's Day, are you Irish?

Whichever have a good St. Patrick's Day!

Have you ever heard of "An apple a day helps keep the doctor away?" i have, have you thought much about that? When I have had gall stones I have used apples and apple
juice to soften the edges of the gall stones so I could pass them easier with a
gallbladder flush.

Here is what eating apples can do,

1. Reduce your risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's
2. Curb your risk of cancer
3. Reduce you risk of diabetes, partly due to the fiber
4. Prevent gallstones
5. Help the heart
6. Beat diarrhea and constipation
7. Avert hemorrhoids
8. Neutralize irritable bowel syndrome
9. Control your weight
10. Cleanse your liver
11. Reduce risk of cataracts
12. Boost your immune system

All from the poor little lowly apple, doesn't it make you hungry for one?

Happy meal preparation and a healthy weekend to you!!!

Love and prayers,

February 11's Question -

If pain is an issue for you......how do you cope with the pain at its different levels?
Do you have natural ways, meds. other thoughts?

Maybe some of the things you do can help the rest of us.

(Keep in mind, none of us are doctors, so this is not medical advice.)

Thanks!

Could I share some thoughts? I take magnesium to help relax my legs, my legs are
very helpful. But then something will still suddenly flare it up for a time and that is the
stage I am in this week, but I know what happened. I have lymphedema in my legs
and they are big and solid. When I sit in a chair like a dentist chair, I have to sit down
quickly in one fluid movement flinging my legs up and on the chair all at once time. I
don't have the strength in my back to lift them slowly for they are so heavy,. Anyhow as
I was ready to sit down the hygienist moved the chair which caused my balance to go
and everything in the room appeared to start moving, I tried again and she moved the
chair agian and the room kept moving, it was so hard. Now I am having exteme pain
in my legs. I had hoped for a better day but it hasn't stared yet. How hard to keep
trying to smile with all the pain. My legs use to cramp so bad I tfelt like I needed to
take them off and put them against the wall, especially for the night. The magnesiumn
really helped that.

I hope you can find a key to at least some or the pain.

Love and prayers,

"Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice." Phil. 4:4

Yes, Angel, the handwork definitely helps.....It is so funny in a way, some people can't eat
when they are stressed, and some eat because they are stressed....then there is boredom, frustration, fear and worry, and some where down the line there is hunger. :-)
It's good that we have each other and can encourage each other.

I 'feel" today is going to be a difficult one, its so cloudy and gloomy, I feel tense and stressed
for some reason, and so very tired. I hope my body soon realizes I am awake. :-)

Have a great day everyone!

Boredom is a major cause of over-eating. I eat more when I'm bored. Most people I know say the same thing you said - when they're really busy, eating is not such an issue.
I eat more when I slow down towards the end of the day. I'm not really hungry. I'm just watching TV and reading on my computer - not idle, but not really busy either.
I've heard advice that says find something to do with your hands while you're watching TV or relaxing in the evening. Crochet or do cross stitch, that kind of work - keeps your hands busy and out of the food!

Oh. I am so sorry, I did forget! :-( Have you tried upping your protein intake? If I get
enough protein, I am not near as hungry, thus I have better self control. I read a post
one day of someone who is just staying strictly with the sparks menu, everything is
balanced and they said they are losing weight and never could before.

Find a specific way to deal with the stress, like knitting, crocheting, venting, music,
batting a ball, if you're mobile something active, but have it planned in your head
ahead of time. We subconsciously know we are going to turn to food when under
stress, we need to WORK at changing that.

I hope things go well for you.

I have some thoughts for you, so "if" I remember when I get home, I am heading out to church shortly. I will send you some ideas. Until then is there anything else you can share, have you just started with Sparks? Is it lack of control? Are you doing the diet and the scales just aren't moving? I think you will be surprised once you get things pulled together, you will most likely start dropping the pound and thus start dropping some of the pain. I hope. Talk to you later.

Put on some weight this year, and find I'm having more trouble with my chronic pain with the extra weight on. Have a lot more stress this year too, and it's making it harder to lose the weight. Feel like I'm trapped in a vicious cycle. I'm looking for a way to break out of the bad place I'm in right now.

Icecube, glad you could get in a walk. Moving even with walking helps keep the muscles relaxed more than not doing anything. I got out for a walk today and it felt good. Yesterday was a cardio and ST day. Tomorrow will be cardio with the videos and weekend mostly ST. Have found need to break the routines up or I hurt to much the next day.

Supposed to me nicer tomorrow. Cool but sunny. I am in upstate NY. Where do you live? Are you in the path of the Hurricane heading for the east coast, or out by tornado alley? Hope you are safe. So many places getting storms, flooding or wildfires.

I slept in today. Must have needed it as I didn't hear the alarm. Sunny and cooler today. Nice breeze blowing. Got a short walk in and just enjoyed being on our road. No traffic. A few neighbors out working in their yards, to say hello to.

Will do some strength training this afternoon.

Glad you are enjoying the gym and the machines are what you like. If you like it you will keep up with it.

Hope you have a peaceful evening and good sleep tonight.lol

What is your favorite type of exercise? What time of day is easiest for you to exercise? I know exercise for me is easier in the morning as I am stiffer and more sore later in the day. My favorite exercise is thai-chi. It is gentle and gets my whole body moving.

Let's start a conversation.

Everyone is welcome!

Hi ICECUBE,

Glad you are enjoying some of the equipment at the gym. I liked the bike when I used the gym a few years ago. It gave you intervals to work harder then easier. Bike gave me a sense of adventure.

I got a 15 minute walk in today and enjoyed the outside.

Supposed to be nice here during the day tomorrow. Rain in the evening.

Hope you have a good night and pleasant dreams.

Today was my second day of the boot camp challenge and first day for ST challenge. Iwas was able to do 2 ten minute work outs and get in a 15 min walk by spreading them out over the day. My back is hurting a lot tonight but have iced it and plan on going to bed shortly to give it rest on my sides.

ICECUBE, You are certainly welcome. Please let me know how it goes and what you are working on at the gym. Hope you have a good nights rest! emoticon

GOLDIEROSE: Thank you for your good thoughts and wishes. Hope to see you back here again. Tell us how you are doing and anything thar is helping you.

ICECUBE: We all have set backs, but those numbers on the scale are not who we are. From what I have seen of your previous posts your a very nice person and you care about others, now I need you to see that you also care about yourself. Change comes one step at a time and with repitition. You are walking and getting exercise. You are moving ahead. Give yourself credit.

Hope we can keep this chat room going. Wish you both a good night!

Hi, My name is Karen and I am pretty new to the group. I would love to have this string keep up and get to know you. I am 57 years old and dealing with chronic pain in my neck and arms from two surgeries on my neck to fuse vertebrae and also herniated discs in my neck. Also have lower back and leg pain from an injury I received while working. I can't bend my neck or back hardly at all. Exercise with gentle stretches does help pain some and I use ice as needed.
I also use meditation and diversion to help with the pain. Reading can help me escape for a short time. Music and warm shower with message pulse of the water also gives me a break from pain.

How do you cope with the pain?

What are your hobbies? Let's get some good thoughts and talks going! The image below is one inspiration that has kept me going. Hope it help s you to:

I find it easier to ride the recumbent bike or go for a bike ride too. Aqua exercise is also easy on my chronic pain. Good luck! emoticon

Hello! I am new to this team. Chronic pain is my biggest issue now. I have fibromyalgia, arthritis . Bursitis in both hips, moderate arthritis & bone spurs in both knees & feet and spinal stenosis. If I stand or walk too long, my legs and feet become tingling and painful. Going to a grocery store is torture for me. I know I could do the wheel chairs but I am not ready to do that yet. (Pride can be painful. ) but, I can ride a bike. I have been going to the gym and riding a stationary or recumbent bike. I can do the weight machines because I sit while doing them. Getting this extra weight off is very important to me! It will make a huge difference in what I can do and my mobility now and later on. However, when the pain gets bad, I often crave the good ol comfort foods! Sugary, carby, high calorie stuff! Temporary fix for the mood but a big detriment to the body! Willpower can be hard to come by when you feel miserable! I look forward to meeting & learning from you!

Today I go to the doctor to see if he will release me for work. I am hoping he will and I am hoping that I will be able to tolerate a full 8 hr shift. I have been off work for the past 6 months and have been thinking lately that if I can deal with the pain and still function at home, why can't I deal with the pain and function at work. So keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

On a good note, with the help of my rollator walker I was able to do the laundry yesterday, the first time I have washed, dried, folded and put away the laundry in a year. GO ME!!!!

Hi all.
It's been awhile since I have posted here so now I am back.
Today I got up in a good mood with minimal pain so I am going to walk across the street and go to the store to get quarters to do laundry and then go to Goodwill to pick up a printer. I believe the printer will fit on my walker seat so I can get it back home., I can't wait until I have a printer, I really need one with all the communications I have been getting from my lawyers.
I just had a wonderful visit with my son and his fiancee earlier this week. I haven't seen him in 7 years, it was really nice to see him and meet his fiancee. The visit was not long enough, he was only in town for about 5 days because he was here more for business than for a vacation. Next time I see him I hope that it will be a vacation.
Tomorrow I have to go to the doctor to be examined by a workers comp claim, I hope for my sake I am not feeling this good or else I may lose my appeal with workers comp

Well gotta go do my errands. Hope everyone has a good day.

I been really busy doing yard work this week and my back is yelling at me for it. Was cutting the grass with an electric weed eater and only being able to do a little bit each day.

Did not get anything done in the house like I wanted to but feeling good about the yard. So trying to look at the accomplishments instead of what I have not accomplished and praise myself for what we have gotten done.

Bud my husband is going in for a sleep test sunday evening and been summens for jury duty on monday at 8am So Tim one of our sons is going to help me with the paper routes monday morning and hoping to get it totally done by the time Bud gets out of his test.

I went from 210 lbs to 205 lbs in one week. emoticon

Well I have been calling the neurologist that specializes in movement disorders for the last three weeks to try to get an appointment; they need the Doctor to review the records that were faxed from the first neuro before they can set one up. Finally I got word from them, even though they specialize in movements disorders they are unable to help me; they deal more with people with Parkinson Disease. So, they have called the first neuro and told them to refer me to another neurologist that specialized in movement disorders. I am now being referred to the neurologists at Barrows Neurological Institute and I know it is going to take forever to get an appointment to get in to see anyone.
My medical leave, short term disability and my insurance all end on 4/22 so I will be applying to the state for help. Since I live alone I am hoping that the state will help me by giving me money to help me pay my rent until I get SSDI (providing that I get approved).
This past year has been a trial on me, I have never hurt so much for so long. I just want someone to tell me why I have the uncontrollable leg shakes. I think it's the not knowing that is frustrating but being passed from one doctor to another is beyond frustrating.

Hope you all have a good week.
Sindia

Hi everyone yesterday I went to the doctor just for my usual 3 month check in and found out that since the beginning of the year I have gained 13lbs back. I told him that I have cut down on what I been eating and said what is next on losing this weight. All he said to me is get up and move around a lot more but be careful.

I thought man that is so helpful so been looking up more chair exercises and found out there is a lot more out there then I thought there was.

Thinking I need to figure out how to get the umph up to get moving knowing that once I get started with a task I stay on it until it is done for that section at least. Then I need the umph to get up the next day to do the same thing.

I told dh that maybe I should just walk around the house a lot to get in 2 or 3 miles a day going in a circle until this rain stops. But that is boring to do that every day several times (I know excuses, excuses). When the weather is good enough to go outside I can take one dog to the corner and back, (since we have three dogs) that would be three trips to the corner and back. the round trip is about 1/2 mile so that would get me 1 1/2 miles a day as long as I keep it up.

Weather here in California is raining, in the summer time it can get up over 100 at times. So need some suggestions on how to make the exercise fun so it would be more like play time so to speak.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Shirley

It sounds like things are moving along, Sindia, as you wisely keep a careful eye on your insurance - good for you! This must be such a stressful time for you, as if having to see this "new neuro" (little play on words there!) weren't enough to face. I have a feeling everything will ultimately work out to your benefit, but this "holding pattern" period sure is difficult... Keep us posted on how things are moving along for you... emoticon

Thanks Lola_Lala. I went to a neurologist on the 11th and they are referring me to another neurologist that specializes in movement disorder. It has been decided after talking with my PCP that I will not be going back to work and will be applying for SSDI. I am waiting until the last minute to tell my work that I won't be back, I cant lose my insurance quite yet.
