25 ways to clean with vinegar

The cleaning aisle at just about any grocery store is stocked with a dizzying array of options-and when it comes down to it, there are a lot of expensive, toxic, superfluous products crowding the market. Chances are, you already have one of the best, all-purpose cleaning agents in your pantry: white vinegar. As noted earlier, vinegar actually works as a great laundry booster, stripping away the chemical build-up that detergent leaves behind (and gets rid of clingy odors in the process). And beyond that, there are tons of other applications for the stuff around your home. Here, from vinegartips.com and frugalfun.com, 25 ideas for making the most of vinegar:

1. Deodorize the sink: Pour 1 cup baking soda, followed by 1 cup hot vinegar, down the drain. Let sit for at least 5 minutes, then rinse with hot water.

2. Deodorize the garbage disposal: Make ice cubes out of vinegar. Run the disposal with a few vinegar ice cubes and cold water.

3. Clean countertops: Wipe down surfaces with a rag dipped in vinegar.

4. Clean the fridge: Use a mixture of half water, half vinegar to wipe down the interior shelves and walls.

5. Remove soap build-up and odors from the dishwasher: Once a month, pour 1 cup of vinegar into an empty dishwasher and run the machine through its entire cycle.

6. Bust oven grease: If you've got grease spots on the oven door, pour some vinegar directly on the stains, let it sit for 15 minutes, and wipe away with a sponge.

7. To make old glassware sparkle: To get rid of the cloudy effect, wrap a vinegar-soaked towel around the glass and let it sit. Remove and rinse with hot water.

8. Get rid of lime deposits on your tea kettle: Fill the kettle with vinegar and let it boil. Allow it to cool, and rinse with water.

9. Remove stains in coffee cups: Create a paste using of equal parts vinegar and salt (or in lieu of salt, baking soda) and scrub gently before rinsing.

10. Treat Tupperware stains (and stinkiness): Wipe the containers with a vinegar-saturated cloth.

11. Remove stains on aluminum pots: Boil 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water.

12. Deter ant infestations: Spray outside doorways and windowsills, and anywhere you see a trail of critters.

13. Clean can openers: Scrub the wheel of your can opener with vinegar using an old toothbrush.

14. Remove stickers or labels: Cover the sticker with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Let it sit overnight-it should slide right off by morning.

15. Shine porcelain sinks: A bit of vinegar and a good scrub should leave them sparkling.

16. Clean grout: Pour on some vinegar, let it hang out for a few minutes, and buff with an old toothbrush.

17. Clean the shower door: Spray them down with vinegar pre-shower, or post (after you've squeegeed the glass) to remove hard water deposits.

18. Clean a grimy showerhead: To get rid of scum, fill a Ziploc with ½ a cup of baking soda and 1 cup vinegar and tie it around the showerhead. Let it sit for an hour, until the bubbling has stopped. Remove the bag and run the shower.

19. Make a toilet sparkle: Pour in a cup or two of vinegar and let it sit there overnight before scrubbing with a toilet brush.

20. Polish linoleum floors: Add 1 cup of vinegar for every gallon of water you use to wash the floor.

21. Clean paintbrushes: Soak paintbrushes for an hour before simmering them on the stove to remove hardened paint. Drain and rinse.

22. Clean grills: Spray vinegar on a ball of tin foil, then use it to give the grate a firm scrub.

23. Disinfect wood cutting boards: Wipe down wood boards with a wash of vinegar.

24. Clean the microwave: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 2 cups water and ½ cup vinegar. Heat it on full power for 3-4 minutes until it comes to a boil. Keep the door closed for a few minutes longer to let the steam fill the microwave, loosening the grime. Remove the bowl (carefully!) and wipe down interior walls with a sponge.

25. Polish patent leather accessories: Give them a rub with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Buff with a dry cloth.

I liked how you explained it this way in the other post. thanks for sharing...

He told me it would sting a touch and would taste bad, but it might help draw out the infection and reduce the pain and swelling. I burst out laughing when he explained that it is a paste made of garlic, onion and salt that is wrapped in a thin cloth like a paper towel and applied to the infected area of the gums. Apparently onions are great for removing the poisons from scorpion bites, snake bites, etc. and it works on infections. The garlic helps boast the immune system in the healing process.

Apparently this is the cure I needed!

Thanks for posting that where it should be.

Now for an update:
I slept very well, and did not wake up until the alarm clock buzzed. I actually felt like eating toast, but didn't want to push it. So I stuck to yogurt. My tooth began a dull hint of an ache about 9:30 a.m., when I arrived at the dentist at 3 p.m., it had a bit of an ache but not too bad. emoticon
Unfortunately, he can't do the work until Monday. He noted that I am allergic to pain killers and asked if I would like to try a remedy his father used to use when he was a kid. I burst out laughing when it was the same garlic, onion, and salt poultice!
It's now been about 19 hours since I put that foul tasting poultice in my mouth, and my tooth is just starting to throb enough that I think it's time to face the poultice again. emoticon

I copied this from a nother spark friend's post and thought it was worthe while putting it here. Hope none of you gets a toothache. Blessings, Jetta

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The dentist called and they can fit me in tomorrow afternoon. Help did come earlier than that though. I had a vague memory of my Grandmother making a poultice for toothaches. None of my siblings or other family members in the area remembered this and I thought it might have just been wishful thinking. About an hour ago, my aunt called to chat, and I told her about the toothache and asked if she recalled the poultice. She laughed and said it was the worst tasting, most horribly thing to give to anyone with a toothache, but it will kill the pain and draw out the infection. The dentist still needs to look after the problem but life will be tolerable until then. So I sat here with a tea bag emptied of the tea, and replaced with a crushed clove of garlic, a mashed slice of onion and salt, placed directly over the swollen gum. I gagged, and spit and gagged and spit, but kept putting it back until I could handle it. After a half hour, I was relieved. The pain is almost gone. It's still a bit swollen, but so much better. I might even be able to sleep tonight!"
in addition, this is from my other team per response and I think it is good to add.
Reminder: when using citrus essential oils (lemon, lime, grapefruit, etc.) make sure that the EO is organic. Citrus fruits are heavily sprayed with chemicals that can be absorbed into the peel, where the oils come from. When distilled, those chemicals can transfer into the EO
15 Hidden Health Secrets of Lemons
By Theresa Cheung
Did you know the Ancient Egyptians believed that eating lemons and drinking lemon juice was an effective protection against a variety of poisons, and that recent research has confirmed this belief?
There are many health benefits of lemons that have been known for centuries. The two biggest are lemons’ strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers and their use as a weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser. Lemons contain many substances--notably citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene--that promote immunity and fight infection.
These are well-known health facts about lemons. But there’s so much more to this little yellow fruit. Here are 15 that I’ll bet you didn’t know. Whether you use them in the form of juice, teas, drinks, dressing, poultices or in the bath, take advantage of lemons’ natural healing power.
Learn the first health secret of lemons.
Abolish Acne
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lemon contains citric acid, which can be effective in treating acne. The vitamin C found in citrus fruits is vital for that healthy glowing skin while its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria known to cause acne. In addition to drinking lemon juice with water first thing in the morning, here are some suggestions on how to prepare a homemade acne treatment using lemon:

· With your finger or a cotton ball, apply fresh lemon juice on acne and leave it overnight. Wash with water the following morning. There may be an uncomfortable sensation of burning at first, but it will soon disappear.

· Mix one part of freshly squeezed lemon juice with an equal part of rose or honey water. Put the mixture on affected areas for at least half an hour. Wash it afterwards with water. This application should be repeated twice daily, ideally in the morning and the evening.

Note: these remedies are safe and natural, but if acne is severe or there are open wounds, consult your doctor first.

Abandon Your Anxiety
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Research has shown that lemon balm has a calming effect and therefore may be able to help remove fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, anxiety, nervousness, and tension. It is also believed that inhaling lemon oil helps in increasing concentration and alertness. It can therefore be used as a room freshener in offices to increase the efficiency of the employees. If you’re feeling tense sprinkle a few drops of lemon balm essential oil (Melissa officinalis) on a handkerchief to inhale.
Canker Sore, No More
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The proven antibacterial and antiviral properties of lemons can accelerate the healing process in the case of cankers. Mix the juice of freshly squeezed lemon into a glass of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth with this solution; do this three times a day. There may be a burning sensation when the lemon juice comes into contact with the canker, however, the more frequently you use it, the less burning there will be.

Leave the Fever
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chills and fevers may be due to a variety of causes, but the lemon is always a helpful remedy. Here is a method that can ease symptoms: add the juice of 1 lemon to a cup of hot water with honey and drink at once, then every 2 hours until the fever or chill subsides.
Cold and Flu Got You Blue?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When you have a cold, the healing power of lemons works both internally, by supplying urgently required vitamin C to your defense cells, and externally, through the application of its antiviral properties to the virus on the mucous membranes in the nose and throat.

At the first indication of a cold – a runny nose or sore throat –try to give your body as much immune-boosting vitamin C as you can so that the virus is eliminated before it gets a chance to take hold. Drink the freshly squeezed juice of 1 lemon in a glass of lukewarm water every 2 hours.

If you have a sore throat, add the juice of 1 lemon and 1 teaspoon (5ml) of sea salt to 1 cup (250ml) lukewarm water. Gargle three times a day for 1 minute to diminish the burning sensation. If it’s a case of tonsillitis, gargle every 2 hours for at least 30 seconds with the freshly squeezed juice of 1 lemon. Tilt the head back to allow the antibacterial and antiviral properties of the juice to flow into the back of the throat. You can swallow the juice when you have finished gargling thereby benefiting from an immune-boosting vitamin C shot.

Cure Corns and Calluses
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lemon poultices applied overnight are a good home remedy for corns and calluses. Place a slice of lemon approx 5 mm thick on to the corn, bandage and fasten. Dabbing the affected area with lemon essential oil also helps accelerate the healing process. Take care to only use the undiluted oil on the callused area using a cotton ball or Q- tip, as it is too strong for un-callused skin.
Erase Eczema
~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you suffer from skin infection such as eczema, a lemon wrap may offer relief. Add 8 drops of lemon essential oil to 1 cup (250ml) lukewarm water and 1 tablespoon (15ml) of liquid honey. Honey also has anti-inflammatory effect and strengthens the healing power of lemon.

Soak a linen cloth in the liquid, squeeze out the excess, and gently place the cloth on the affected area for 15 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day. Not only will this ease the infection, it will counter the overwhelming urge to scratch.

Fight Fatigue
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Long distance walkers, world travelers, and explorers look upon the lemon as a Godsend. When fatigue sets in, they might suck lemon juice by piercing the top of the fruit with a straw, giving themselves a quick-acting medicine and a lovely refreshment.
Explorers also use lemon for protection against many infections of the tropics. A small amount of lemon juice will quench thirst more effectively than many times the amount of water. Experienced travelers declare that when they add lemon juice to ordinary drinking water, in various localities, it acts as an antiseptic and prevents illness due to allergy to different water supplies.
Lemon oil also seems to be able to stimulate brain activity so whenever you feel tired for no reason or are finding it hard to focus or concentrate, add 4 drops of lemon oil to a water-filled aromatherapy lamp. Alternatively, drink a glass of lemon water every few hours.
Hexed with Halitosis?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lemons can help freshen breath that has gone sour after consuming certain spices, alcohol, cigarettes, or that is caused by insufficient salivation. To keep breath fresh, thoroughly rinse your mouth several times a day with the freshly squeezed juice of 1 lemon in a glass of lukewarm water. Chewing on a lemon slice after every meal will also help.

Healing Hypertension
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Garlic and onions have been shown to be effective in the fight against hypertension, and they combine well with the healing power of lemon. Add 3 crushed garlic cloves and 1 chopped onion to 1 quart or cold skimmed or low fat milk or soy milk. Slowly bring to the boil and let it stand for 5 minutes. Pour through a sieve and chill. Add the freshly squeezed juice of 3 lemons and sip throughout the day.
And if you suffer from high cholesterol, don’t forget that the pectin power in lemons along with its other metabolism and circulation boosting nutrients can help lower cholesterol.
Smite a Bug Bite
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If the stinger is still in the skin, take it out with a pair of tweezers. Massage 1 to 2 drops of lemon oil, mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey, into the skin around the bite.

To repel insects, add 20 drops of lemon oil to 1 cup (250ml) of water and spray into the air. It smells great and repels insects at the same time. Another home remedy is to place a cotton ball soaked in lemon oil in your bedroom. If you are sitting outside in the evening, apply lemon scent to skin areas not covered in clothing. Or, add 10 drops of lemon oil to 1 ½ oz of sunflower oil and rub into the skin.

Put Insomnia to Rest
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Several studies have found that lemon balm combined with other calming herbs (such as valerian, hops, and chamomile) helps reduce anxiety and promote sleep. In a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 18 healthy volunteers received two separate single doses of a standardized lemon balm extract (300 mg and 600 mg) or placebo for 7 days. The 600 mg dose of lemon balm increased mood and significantly increased calmness and alertness
Pulverize Pain
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Even though it tastes bitter, lemon juice has a powerful alkaline effect in the body and is therefore a natural agent against excess acid, which is in part responsible for rheumatism. Drink the freshly squeezed juice of 1 lemon in a glass of lukewarm water 3 times a day and if you experience severe pain add the juice of 2 lemons 3 times a day.

Lemon oil has pain-relieving qualities, so to inhibit inflammation and ease pain, massage the affected area daily with several drops of lemon oil mixed with 1 tablespoon (15ml) jojoba oil.

Save your Stomach
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Drink the juice of 1 freshly squeezed lemon in a glass of lukewarm water after each meal. The lemon acid will stimulate the production of stomach acid and the activity of stomach muscles.
Say Adios to Varicose
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lemon oil has vessel-strengthening properties that can help fight varicose and spider veins. For spider veins, take 2 to 3 drops of lemon oil every day and mix in a small bowl with jojoba, avocado or almond oil and massage the affected area.

For varicose veins,add 6 drops of lemon oil to 1 ½ oz (50 ml) wheat germ oil, and 2 drops each of cypress and juniper oil. Use this mixture daily for a gentle massage of the legs from bottom to top, in the direction of the heart. For a vein and vessel-rejuvenating bath add 8 drops of lemon oil to a warm bath. Also add 4 drops of cypress oil blended with 1 tablespoon (15ml) of honey. Soak in the bath for 15 minutes and when you come out, pat your skin dry – don’t rub it.

Apple Cider Vinegar Cures
Updated: 01/24/2009

They include cures for allergies (including pet, food and environmental), sinus infections, acne, high cholesterol, flu, chronic fatigue, candida, acid reflux, sore throats, contact dermatitis, arthritis, and gout. Apple Cider Vinegar also breaks down fat and is widely used to lose weight. It has also been reported that a daily dose of apple cider vinegar in water has high blood pressure under control in two weeks!

Apple Cider Vinegar is also wonderful for pets, including dogs, cats, and horses. It helps them with arthritic conditions, controls fleas & barn flies, and gives a beautiful shine to their coats!

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DOSAGES AND RECIPES
Revised 10/01/2008:

Earth Clinic has recommended the standard 2 teaspoons in 8 oz of water 3x a day for years now. For more severe conditions, we recommended 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water 3x a day. We now think that less vinegar, more water is an optimal way of taking apple cider vinegar daily unless you are treating an acute condition like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, or sore throat (in which case the stronger concoction of 2 TBS ACV to 8 OZ of water 3x a day recipe is suggested).

For daily maintenance, weight loss and pH balancing, we now suggest the following:

2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar
16 ounces of water
Sip, don't chug!

We suggest 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 16 ounces of water that you'll sip throughout the day, rather than drinking the whole concoction at once 3 times a day. You will be keeping your pH in a constant, alkalized state by sipping this highly diluted dosage. Usually 1-2 tall glasses of the concoction are all you'll need each day.

If you drink a lot of water throughout the day, consider adding just a splash of apple cider vinegar to your glass/container each time you fill it up, rather than drinking the one, 16 oz glass of acv and water mentioned above.

For the record, we are not big fans of adding baking soda to apple cider vinegar, nor are we fans of adding any kind of sweetener to the acv/water solution. The baking soda works great for some people, but causes severe side effects in others.

------------------------------------
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR RECIPES

Standard Dosage: 2 teaspoons of ACV in 8 oz of water. Add honey to taste.
Acute Conditions: 2 tablespoons of ACV in 8 oz of water. No honey.

Note: 2 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar may be too much apple cider vinegar for some people . We suggest you start with the standard dosage and see how your body responds to a teaspoon or two of acv. If all goes well, you can up the dosage over time if you feel a need arise.

To detox: 2 TBSP of organic ACV in a 1 or 2 Liter filtered water bottle (ie Smart Water, Evian, etc). 2 TBSP = 1/8th cup. You can add more vinegar than this amount, however, make sure you dilute it with plenty of water. Do not add a sweetener. Drink this solution throughout the day. The solution will be cleansing your system and kidneys all day long. That's the point.

There are several things you will notice within a day or two of drinking Apple Cider Vinegar: your allergies will disappear, your face will have a healthy & youthful glow, you will look & feel more VITAL, you will have consistent energy, and you will more easily digest your food.

We believe that apple cider vinegar is probably the best (and cheapest) detoxifier for the body. As such, it is should be considered a critical component to the fountain of youth!

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND pH BALANCE
It's suggested that Apple Cider Vinegar has such curative abilities because it causes one's pH levels to become more alkaline. If you are going to try apple cider vinegar for allergies, or even to prevent sickness, we suggest you do an investigation of your own by buying a pH test kit at a local pharmacy, garden nursery, or even pool supply store. You can use these kits or pH strips to test your urine to see if you are more alkaline or acid during an allergy attack, virus or bacterial infection. Once you ascertain your pH levels, you can adjust adjust your dosage of Apple Cider Vinegar accordingly.

Distilled white vinegar and cider vinegar sold in supermarkets are considered "dead" vinegars with none of the enzymes and other live factors that make raw, unpasteurized vinegars so valuable.

In Conclusion
Why Vinegar? Because it can be used medicinally, gets rid of poisons in the body, has disinfecting and cleaning properties and is a natural, non toxic, biodegradable substance. That is, vinegar is an unadulterated food, a powerful cleansing agent and healing elixir---a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria. We would be smart to make use of vinegar in our own lives and in our avian nurseries and breeding facilities. --- For a healthier, stronger, longer life for our animals and ourselves.

Some apple cider vinegar brands are extremely acidic, causing heartburn and yeast infections. (Note:certain brands of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar stop a yeast infection, yet other brands are so acidic that they can actually cause a yeast infection. Thus start with a lower dose to see how your body responds to the vinegar.) 5% acidity level is what is posted on all ACV labels, however it seems that some brands are far more acidic than others!

CLEAN AND GREEN
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's a collection of natural cleaning formulas, concoctions and witches brews. MOST are safe and nontoxic, with a few exceptions which are clearly noted.
Use the ingredients listed below when making your own alternative cleaners, most are inexpensive and you probably already have many of them in your kitchen cupboards. All can be found at your local supermarket, natural food store or drugstore. Used individually or combined, these cleaners are safe, effective and cost-efficient.
BAKING SODA (sodium bicarbonate): An all-purpose, non-toxic cleaner. Cleans, deodorizes, removes stains and softens fabrics.
BORAX (sodium borate): A natural mineral that kills mold and bacteria. An alternative to bleach, it deodorizes, removes stains and boosts the cleaning power of soap. Please note safety precautions at the bottom of this page.
CASTILE and VEGETABLE OIL BASED SOAPS: Cleans everything
CORNSTARCH: Starches clothes, absorbs oil and grease
HERBS and ESSENTIAL OILS: For disinfecting and fragrance
LEMON JUICE: Cuts through grease and removes perspiration and other stains from clothing.A bleach alternative.
SALT (sodium chloride): An abrasive
TOOTHPASTE A mild abrasive
VINEGAR (acetic acid): Cuts grease, removes stains and is an excellent water softener.
WASHING SODA (sodium carbonate): Cleans clothes, softens water, cuts grease and disinfects. Increases the cleaning power of soap.
Hints:
To save time and money, make your cleaners in advance and buy the ingredients in bulk for cost savings and to avoid excess packaging..
Make large batches of the recipes and store them in reusable airtight plastic containers and spray bottles. Using a pretty spray bottle or container makes cleaning days more fun and pleasant.
Label all of your ingredients and keep them out of reach of children. While most of these all natural cleaners are not poisonous, some can be harmful or even fatal if swallowed by children or pets. See specific safety precautions at the bottom of this page.
Add your favorite essential oils or herbs to any of these formulas for fragrance
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Air Fresheners/Deodorizers:
1) Place cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice or other favorite scented spice in a pot of water , simmer for 1-2 hours
2) Put a few slices of leftover orange or lemon rinds in a pot of water, simmer for 1-2 hours
3) Place baking soda in an open container of your choice. Good for closets, refrigerators and other small enclosed spaces
4) 2-3 slices of white bread absorbs refrigerator odors
5) Place lemon slices in an open bowl in the kitchen
6) Lemon and baking soda spray:
Dissolve baking soda in 2 cups hot water, add lemon juice, pour into spray bottle, spray into air as air freshener
7) Place unscented kitty litter placed in bowls to absorb room odors
8) Vinegar in a cup or bowl rids rooms of odors
9) Charcoal placed in a bowl rids rooms of odors
10) Simply light a match for a few moments or burn a candle (scented or unscented). The flame from either will "eat-up" bad smelling gases in the air
11) Pour vanilla extract into a shallow dish and set in an out of the way place
12) Spin-Fresh Bathroom Deodorizer
Add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil to the inside of the cardboard toilet tissue roll. With each turn, fragrance is released into the room.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All Purpose Cleaners:
1) Vinegar and Salt. Mix together for a good surface cleaner.
2) Baking Soda. Dissolve 4 tablespoons baking soda in 1 quart warm water for a general cleaner.
3) Baking soda on a damp sponge. Baking soda cleans and deodorizes all kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
4) Use liquid castile soap and baking soda or Borax in different ratios. Use a little soap and soda/borax with lots of water on floors, walls and counters. Use more soap, soda/Borax for tubs sinks, cat boxes, anything that can be well rinsed.
5) For a general, all-purpose cleaner, try a paste made from baking soda and water or mix salt and water with a little vinegar.
6) 3 tbsp. vinegar, 1/2 tsp. washing soda, 1/2 tsp. vegetable oil based liquid soap, 2 cups hot water. Mix ingredients in spray bottle or bucket. Apply and wipe clean.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disinfectants:
1) Regular cleaning with plain soap and hot water will kill some bacteria.
2) Borax has long been recognized for its disinfectant and deodorizing properties. Mix 1/2 cup Borax into 1 gallon hot water or undiluted vinegar and clean with this solution.
3) Mix a half-cup of borax with 1 gallon hot water. Add a few sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary or lavender. Steep for 10 minutes, strain and cool. Or add essential fragrant oils instead of fresh herbs. Store in a plastic spray bottle.
4) 2 tablespoons borax, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 2 cups hot water. Combine the borax and lemon juice with the water in a spray bottle. Use as you would any commercial all-purpose cleaner.
5) Isopropyl Alcohol is an excellent disinfectant. Sponge on and allow todry. Use in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glass Cleaners:
Windows and Mirrors:
1) Use undiluted vinegar in a spray bottle or
2) Equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle or
3) 1/2 lemon juice and 2 cups water in a spray bottle or
5) Mix 1/2 cup cornstarch with 2 quarts warm water. Apply with sponge then wipe with absorbent cloth or towel. Do not wash windows or glass when sun is on them or if they are warm. This causes the solution to dry too quickly creating unwanted streaks.
6) No-Streak Glass Cleaner: 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 quart warm water
Mix the ingredients and apply with a sponge or pour into spray bottle and spray on. Wipe dry with crumpled newspaper, buff to a shine. (Use crumpled newspaper instead of paper towels for lint-free results.
7) Rubbing alcohol is effective in place of glass cleaner.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scouring Powders:
1/4 cup borax
Vegetable-oil based liquid soap (such as Murphys Oil Soap)
1/2 teaspoon lemon oil
In a bowl, mix the borax with enough soap to form a creamy paste. Add lemon oil and blend well. Scoop a small amount of the mixture onto a sponge, wash the surface, then rinse well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bathroom Cleaners:
Toilet Bowl Cleaners:
1) Baking Soda and Vinegar: Sprinkle baking soda into the bowl, then squirt with vinegar and scour with a toilet brush. Cleans and deodorizes.
2) Borax and Lemon Juice. For removing a stubborn stain, like toilet bowl ring, mix enough borax and lemon juice into a paste cover the ring. Flush toilet to wet the sides, then rub on paste. Let sit for 2 hours and scrub thoroughly. For less stubborn toilet bowl rings, sprinkle baking soda around the rim and scrub with a toilet brush.
3)1 cup borax, 1/2 cup white vinegar. Flush to wet the sides of the bowl. Sprinkle the borax around the toilet bowl, then spray with vinegar. Leave for several hours or overnight before scrubbing with a toilet brush.
If necessary, rub surfaces with an abrasive, such as fine steel wool, then wash with warm soapy water and rinse. Repeat process if necessary. Provide plenty of fresh air and wear gloves.
Refrigerators:
1) To clean exterior and interior walls, dissolve 2 tbs. baking soda in 1 qt warm water and wipe all surfaces. For stubborn spots, rub with baking soda paste. Be sure to rinse with a clean, wet cloth. (This works well on other enamel-finished appliances as well.)
The End of Antibiotics and the Rise of Iodine as an Effective Alternative
(NaturalNews) Eventually antibiotics are going to be seen as one of the worst things to ever come out of pharmaceutical science because in the end, they have made us only weaker in the face of ever increasingly strong super bugs that are resistant to all the antibiotics doctors have at their disposal. When we look at how deep the rabbit hole goes with antibiotics, we will get sick in our souls. Antibiotics have fulfilled their anti–biotic anti-life role leaving a long trail of death and suffering in the wake of their use.
Diseases include measles, scarlet fever, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, pneumonia, influenza, whooping cough, diphtheria and polio. All were in decline for several decades before the introduction of antibiotics or vaccines - Dr. Lawrence Wilson.
Antibiotics do not kill yeast. Many women find after taking antibiotics, they get vaginal yeast infections (because their normal bacterial balance has been lost). Antibiotics bring on fungal and yeast infections thus will eventually be seen as a major cause of cancer since more and more oncologists are seeing yeast and fungal infections as an integral part of cancer and its cause. With upwards of 40 percent of all cancers thought to be involved with and caused by infections, the subject of antibiotics and the need for something safer, more effective and life serving is imperative.
It may be some time before we really enter the predicted "post antibiotic era" in which common infections are frequently untreatable - Dr. Marc Lipsitch et al. (Harvard School of Public Health).
Antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body, including the ones we need.
An antibiotic is a substance produced by certain bacteria or fungi that kills other cells or interferes with their growth. In nature, these substances help some microbes survive by limiting the multiplication of other microbes that share the same environment. Antibiotics that attack pathogenic (disease-causing) microbes without severely harming normal body cells are useful as drugs but there does not seem to be any from the pharmaceutical companies that do not do damage. Dr. Lisa Landymore-Lin wrote all about this in her book Poisonous Prescriptions asking, 'Do Antibiotics Cause Asthma and Diabetes?' We are now beginning to question the role of antibiotics as a cause of cancer since they do lead to pathogen overgrowth especially in the area of yeast and fungi. Chris Woollams writes, "It is estimated that 70 per cent of the British population have a yeast infection. The primary cause of this is our love of antibiotics. Swollen glands? Take antibiotics. Tonsillitis? Take antibiotics."
Two studies in the recent past have shown an association between the use of antibiotics with higher incidence of breast cancer.
In one study the increased risk was small, and the importance of the link has been played down by UK breast-cancer experts, but the findings add weight to recent studies that have found links between antibiotics and other diseases. In the past few years, heavy antibiotic use has been linked to the inflammatory bowel disorder, Crohn's disease, and to children developing allergies such as Hay fever and asthma. And as we shall see below, antibiotics play a hidden role in autism and other neurological diseases.
The Journal of the American Medical Association has reported a study on 10,000 women in which women who took over 500 days of antibiotics in a 17 year period (dubbed 25 plus doses) had twice the risk of breast cancer as those that took none at all. Even women taking just one had a statistical risk increase to 1.5 times.
The consequences of resistance in some bacteria can be measured as increases in the term and magnitude of morbidity, higher rates of mortality, and greater costs of hospitalization for patients infected with resistant bacteria - Dr. Marc Lipsitch et al.
Broad-spectrum antibiotics are undiscriminating: in addition to "bad bacteria," they also kill healthy bacteria which normally live in the intestines and the vagina, and which are a necessary part of the indigenous flora to keep the body healthy. When the "good" bacteria are killed with antibiotics, then yeast, which is part of the normal flora of the body, can begin to overgrow because the antibiotics have altered the body's healthy terrain (internal ecological balance) allowing the yeast to hyperproliferate and cause many far-reaching, toxic symptoms.
But modern medicine so far continues to believe that antibiotics have played an important role in staving off bacterial infections since Alexander Fleming first discovered them in 1927. Many doctors are finally beginning to see that the effectiveness of these so-called miracle drugs has waned as some of the very bacteria they are meant to control have been mutating into new forms that don't respond to treatment. Many medical experts blame this phenomenon on both the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in recent years in both human medicine and in agriculture.
According to several studies, obstetricians and gynecologists write 2,645,000 antibiotic prescriptions every week. Internists prescribe 1,416,000 per week. This works out to 211,172,000 prescriptions annually in the United States, just for these two specialties. Pediatricians prescribe over $500 million worth of antibiotics annually just for one condition, ear infections. Yet topical povidone iodine (PVP-I) is as effective as topical ciprofloxacin, with a superior advantage of having no in vitro drug resistance and the added benefit of reduced cost of treatment.
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, taking properly prescribed medical drugs was listed as the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Antibiotics
were listed in this category because antibiotics can be deadly.
A 17-year-old St Margaret's College student in New Zealand has exposed multiple antibiotic-resistant bugs in fresh chicken sold in supermarkets? Jane Millar's discovery of a range of resistant bacteria in chickens that could compromise antibiotic treatment in humans is an important finding that the bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics not used in the poultry industry but important for treating serious infections in humans.
We can create resistance to medically important antibiotics by using antibiotics that are presumably safe in agriculture - Jane Millar.
Jane bought six fresh chickens - free-range, barn-raised and organic – from a supermarket. She took samples from each bird and grew bug colonies, which she used to test different antibiotics. Apramycin is an antibiotic used sparingly by the New Zealand poultry industry to treat infections. The bacteria of two chickens tested resistant to apramycin. They also proved resistant to another two antibiotics from the same family - gentamicin and tobramycin - used for serious human infections. Gentamicin is not used by the poultry industry; tobramycin is restricted to human use only.
A recent risk assessment study commissioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has estimated that about 8,000-10,000 persons in the U.S. each year acquire fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter infections from chicken and attempt to treat those infections with a fluoroquinolone.
Every day, new strains of bacteria, fungi, and other pathogenic microorganisms are becoming resistant to the antibiotics that once dispatched them with extreme prejudice.
"We know that antimicrobial resistance will follow antimicrobial use as sure as night follows day," said Dr. John A. Jernigan, deputy chief of prevention and response from the Center of Disease Control. "It's just a biological phenomenon." It turns out that the indiscriminate killing of harmless microbes damages the body in complex ways we are only beginning to understand. Powerful antibiotics introduced into the complex environment in our intestines cause mayhem, much like a series of bombs tossed into a market square. Antibiotic resistance is a widespread problem, and one that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls "one of the world's most pressing public health problems."
One of the deadliest germs is a staph bacteria called M.R.S.A., short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which lives harmlessly on the skin but causes havoc when it enters the body. Patients who do survive M.R.S.A. often spend months in the hospital and endure several operations to cut out infected tissue. Hospitalizations associated with a drug-resistant form of a Staphylococcus bacterium doubled over six years in the U.S. to nearly 280,000 cases in 2005. The death toll rose from 4,700 in 1999 to about 6,600 in 2005. It estimated that 94,000 Americans suffered invasive MRSA infections in 2005 and that about 19,000 died.
One out of every 20 patients contracts an infection during a hospital stay in the US. Hospital infections kill an estimated 103,000 people in the United States a year, as many as AIDS, breast cancer and auto accidents combined. The vast majority of lethal cases occur in hospitals and nursing homes, where open wounds and punctures provide the opportunistic staph a ready path to the bloodstream and organs. The dangers of infection are worsening as many hospital infections can no longer be cured with common antibiotics.
More than half the time, doctors and other caregivers break the most fundamental rule of hygiene by
failing to clean their hands before treating a patient.
"Recently there has been an alarming epidemic caused by community-associated (CA)-MRSA strains, which can cause severe infections that can result in necrotizing fasciitis or even death in otherwise healthy adults outside of healthcare settings," is the word coming from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) research team, headed by Dr. Michael Otto.
Necrotizing fasciitis is the so-called flesh-eating disease that can destroy healthy tissue and even kill patients. The team found that some strains on MRSA secrete a compound called phenol-soluble modulin or PSM. It attracts immune system cells called neutrophils, the researchers found, and then blows them up in a process called lysis. Neutrophils are key immune cells involved in clearing bacterial infections, so destroying them would allow the bacteria to thrive almost unmolested.
"In the United States, CA-MRSA is now the cause of the majority of infections that result in trips to the emergency room. It is unclear what makes CA-MRSA strains more successful in causing human disease compared with their hospital-associated counterparts," they add.
When the peaceful activities of a normal microbial population are disrupted, malevolent bacteria may take full advantage of the opportunity to strike. The intestinal infection C. difficile colitis, now rampaging through hospitals around the world, is one of the worst such complication of antibiotic use.
Clostridium difficile was first recognized as a hospital microbe in 1978. By 1996, it had increased to 31 cases per 100,000 people discharged from U.S. hospitals. In 2003, the most recent year for complete statistics, prevalence had risen to 61 per 100,000. C. diff is part of the natural flora, or bacteria, in the colon. "We're seeing all of the warning signs that this is the next MRSA," said former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey, founder of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, a Manhattan-based nonprofit. "It spreads like wildfire in hospitals."
Clostridium difficile is a spore-forming toxin-producing bacterium that is overtaking peoples' large intestines from which it mounts an attack on the bloodstream. Like MRSA, Clostridium difficile has become multi-drug-resistant. Although once a bacterium that mostly affected elderly, hospitalized patients, a bolder strain is crippling the robust. In emergency efforts to save some patients' lives surgeons remove the entire large intestine to prevent overwhelming infection.
One case had been treated by a dermatologist for an ingrown hair on his back and prescribed an antibiotic. He took only a few pills, but quickly became ill. Based on what his doctors told him, the short course of antibiotics proved sufficient to destroy virtually all the natural bacteria in his intestine - except C. diff, which was freed to ravage his colon.
Frequently, stethoscopes, blood-pressure monitors and other equipment are contaminated with live bacteria. Yet doctors and nurses almost never clean the stethoscope before listening to a patient's chest.
"It strikes precisely those hospitals which are more 'high-tech', and handle more serious illnesses. Applying more disinfectant is not the answer; some strains of germs have actually been found thriving in bottles of hospital disinfectant! The more antibacterial chemical 'weapons' are being used, the more bacteria are becoming resistant to them," writes Dr. Carl Wieland.
Health-care officials are increasingly concerned about emerging new forms of drug-resistant Tuberculosis (TB). According to the WHO, outbreaks of drug-resistant tuberculosis are showing up all over the world and threaten to touch off a worldwide epidemic of virtually incurable tuberculosis. An October 1997 survey by the WHO, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease estimates that 50 million people are infected with a strain of TB that is drug-resistant. Many of those are said to carry multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, incurable by two or more of the standard drugs.
New DNA technology has found hundreds of previously unrecognized species in the traditional stomping grounds of the mouth and intestine, and traces of bacteria even in tissues previously thought to be sterile.
Lessons from Autism
Medical scientists at Arizona State University tell us that antibiotic use is known to almost completely inhibit excretion of mercury in rats due to alteration of gut flora. Thus, higher use of oral antibiotics in the children with autism may have reduced their ability to excrete mercury. Higher usage of oral antibiotics in infancy may also partially explain the high incidence of chronic gastrointestinal problems in individuals with autism.
Many physicians are unaware of lasting adverse effects caused by routinely prescribed medications such as antibiotics. Antibiotic therapy for minor colds and runny noses is a common practice. People routinely receive multiple courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics throughout life or are injected with long-acting corticosteroid medicine for joint or muscle pain. Once established, sub-clinical colonization with yeast in the body may persist unrecognized for many years. Antibiotics, such as tetracycline, can greatly increase yeast in the colon after only a few days.
The extensive use of antibiotics will make the condition of Candida much worse because it reduces heavy metal excretion, which is a food source for the yeast like organism and also killing the beneficial bacteria at the same time.
Normally, candida albicans lives peacefully in our intestines and elsewhere, in harmony with other flora that keep the yeast in check. Take an antibiotic and all this changes. By suppressing the normal flora, candida takes over and problems begin. In its mild form, the result is diarrhea or a yeast infection. Dr. Elmer Cranton says that, "Yeast overgrowth is partly iatrogenic (caused by the medical profession) and can be caused by antibiotics and cortisone medications. A diet high in sugar also promotes overgrowth of yeast. A highly refined diet common in industrialized nations not only promotes growth of yeast, but is also deficient in many of the essential vitamins and minerals needed by the immune system. Chemical colorings, flavorings, preservatives, stabilizers, emulsifiers, etc., add more
stress on the immune system."
Children with autism had significantly (2.1-fold) higher levels of mercury in their baby teeth but similar levels of lead and similar levels of zinc. Children with autism also had significantly higher usage of oral antibiotics during their first 12 to 36 months of life. Reporting in the July 11, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers say the use of antibiotics as prevention boosts risks for drug resistance while doing nothing to shield kids from future urinary tract infections (UTIs). Giving antibiotics to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections in small children not only will not help but will hurt these children. Prior use of antibiotics to prevent infection did boost the likelihood of developing a drug-resistant infection by nearly 7.5 times. Indeed, 61 percent of recurrent urinary tract infections were caused by a pathogen with antibiotic resistance, the researchers pointed out.
In a 2005 study, the antibiotic Augmentin TM has been implicated in the formation of autism. The study strongly suggests the possibility of ammonia poisoning as a result of young children taking Augmentin. Augmentin has been given to children since the late 1980's for bacterial infections.
Many physicians seem to be unaware that birth control pills comprised of the hormones estrogen and progesterone can also make the body more susceptible to fungal infections. If antibiotics are prescribed, it acts as a double whammy to ensuring a fungal infection will take hold by diminishing the protective bacteria in the intestines. Many pregnant women seek medical treatment for minor problems and are indiscriminately given antibiotics and this begins a long decline into problems that are complicated at each turn by OBGYN doctors at birth and by pediatricians who just love to poison children with the toxic chemicals found in vaccines. In many places in the world they still give mercury shots at birth.
Microforms poison us with their waste products.
The waste products are acetylaldehyde, uric acid, alloxin, alcohols, lactic acid, etc.
Antibiotics may be to blame for hundreds of children developing autism after having the controversial MMR jab. More than two-thirds of youngsters with the condition received four or more antibiotics in their first year, a British survey has revealed. It is thought the drugs weakened their immune systems, leaving them unable to withstand the impact of the triple jab. Allopathic medicine has been stubborn and slow to look at its abusive use of antibiotics. It's the same with vaccines, the holy grail of medicine. But with last-line-of-defence antibiotics failing on increasingly drug-resistant superbugs and young children's systems being destroyed by them you would think they would wake up and find some alternatives.
Antibiotics are mostly derived from fungi and are therefore classified as mycotoxins. Mycotoxins Are Poisons.
Iodine - a Pillar Against Infections
Iodine offers a serious and potent replacement for much of the antibiotics that are literally destroying people's lives and can be used safely with children. Parents, who chose not to dose their kids with dangerous vaccines will be glad to know that iodine can be very effective against a host of viral infections that medical officials insist threaten children.
Though it kills 90 percent of bacteria on the skin within 90 seconds, its use as an antibiotic has been ignored. Iodine exhibits activity against bacteria, molds, yeasts, protozoa, and many viruses; indeed, of all antiseptic preparations suitable for direct use on humans and animals and upon tissues, only iodine is capable of killing all classes of pathogens: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses and protozoa. Most bacteria are killed within 15 to 30 seconds of contact.
Iodine is by far the best antibiotic, antiviral and antiseptic of all time - Dr. David Derry
Dr. Derry says that iodine is effective "for standard pathogens such as Staphylococcus, but also iodine has the broadest range of action, fewest side effects and no development of bacterial resistance." There is a world of difference between using an antibiotic – anti-life substance – and an antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal substance like iodine, which is life serving because it is a basic and most necessary nutritional substance.
Iodine kills single celled organisms by combining with the amino acids tyrosine or histidine when they are exposed to the extra-cellular environment. All single cells showing tyrosine on their outer cell membranes are killed instantly by a simple chemical reaction with iodine that denatures proteins. Nature and evolution have given us an important mechanism to control pathogenic life forms and we should use it and trust it to protect us in ways that antibiotics can't.
"My husband Ron had a small infection at the base of the nail. This very quickly turned nasty and our doctor agreed it looked like gout. Three weeks later Ron heard back from his Doctor who was in a mad panic saying Ron had septicemia. On seeing the surgeon that same day the surgeon wanted to go in and cut the finger open end for end and look at the finger and that she would probably have to take it off anyway. Finally the Nascent Iodine we ordered arrived (my husband was refusing to take antibiotics) He started on quite a hefty dose of 15 drops while continuing to apply magnesium chloride transdermally."
"Two days after starting the iodine there was feeling starting to regenerate and pain again in the finger and Ron thought it looked less discolored. Then the following day the swelling had started to go down and the normal healthy pinkness was returning at the base of the finger. Over a period of days it has progressively improved with no other treatment than the iodine and magnesium chloride. We also then made a poultice with a mixture of comfrey, honey and garlic for a few days, then the Nascent Iodine dripped into a goldenseal ointment."
Magnesium chloride is the only form of magnesium known to have anti-infectious properties. When it comes to fighting infections, iodine and magnesium chloride are a dynamic duo that should not be overlooked by allopathic or naturopathic physicians or by anyone else. I talked a few months ago to a missionary in Africa who was using iodine (in the atomic or detoxified form) to successfully treat malaria. My own children have recently had bad coughs and it is iodine, not dangerous over-the-counter cough medicines I reach for.
The feeling of security for a parent comes from administering substances like iodine (Nascent and other forms) and magnesium chloride (natural forms) to their children. Yes in dire emergency we would still use an antibiotic when fever is high and all else has failed but until that kind of critical point, iodine, backed up by magnesium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and even clay, is our main line of defense against a full range of pathogens.
Determining what is an appropriate use of an antibiotic is a judgment call in which cultural, social, psychological, and economic factors play at least as great a role as clinical and epidemiological considerations - Dr. Marc Lipsitch et al.
The way to combat antibiotic resistance is not bigger, better, stronger antibiotics but, rather, no antibiotics at all. Instead, other molecular weapons are available with the ability to disable bad germs without bothering good ones. Iodine is the ideal broad spectrum antibiotic that is not an antibiotic - it is not against life. Not against human life that is but you can hear the little pathogens screaming as high enough levels of iodine fan out through the system. Meaning all the viruses, bacteria, yeasts and molds that are threatening us are threatened with instant death when iodine is used orally to fight infection. It's hard to make a mistake with iodine but with pharmaceutical antibiotics we are playing at the crap table hoping our choice of which one to use works against the pathogen that is actually threatening a person.
Infection depresses levels of vitamins B6 and C.
"The right dose of Vitamin C will stop every infection in its tracks without needing to use antibiotics" - Dr. Gary Gordon.
Another reason to avoid antibiotics, except in the most dire emergencies, is that they interfere with the absorption of many vitamins and minerals, leading to their deficiencies. Deficiencies in these nutrients can set the stage for increased susceptibility to more infections.
Following is a list of the Drug/Substance and the Nutrients which are depleted by that substance:
* Antibiotics - (Nutrients Depleted) Vitamin A, B-12, C, E, K, Biotin, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium
* Chelators - Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Zinc
* Anticonvulsants - Vitamin B-2, B-12, C, F, K, Folic Acid, Calcium, Magnesium
* Antidiabetics (Oral) - Vitamin B-2, B-12, C, D, Folic Acid
* Antihistamines - Vitamin C
* Aspirin - Calcium, Folic Acid, Iron, Potassium, C, B Complex
"When I was finally discharged from hospital, I still had a strain of supergerm colonizing my body. Nothing had been able to get rid of it, after months in hospital. However, I was told that all I had to do on going home was to 'get outdoors a lot, occasionally even roll in the dirt, and wait.' In less than two weeks of this advice, the supergerms were gone. Why? The reason is that supergerms are actually defective in other ways, as explained. Therefore, when they are forced to compete with the ordinary bacteria which normally thrive on our skin, they do not have a chance. They thrive in hospital because all the antibiotics and antiseptics being used there keep wiping out the ordinary bacteria which would normally out compete, wipe out and otherwise keep in check these 'superwimps,'" wrote Dr. Carl Wieland
Interestingly enough Dr. Weston Price, who studied the diets and health of many primitive societies during the early 20th century, found that many primitive people would eat food that has been dipped in water dissolved with clay – in order to prevent upset stomachs from food poisoning. Two types of clay are today commonly sold for consumption as health supplements – bentonite and montmorillonite. These have been variously called "living clay", "healing clay" or just "edible clays". Clay is highly absorptive. It readily absorbs toxins, heavy metals, bacteria, virus and fungi. But because clay itself is not absorbed by the body, whatever it absorbs is passed out in the stools.
Mutating Viruses
Did you know that a nutritional deficiency can cause a virus to mutate to a more virulent form? That is the news from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) who are reporting that a human virus, normally harmless in laboratory mice, mutated into a heart-damaging pathogen when the animals were raised on a diet devoid of the essential element selenium. And, once mutated, the virus continued to damage hearts - even in mice that got ample selenium in their feed.
The importance of this is not limited to nutritionally-deprived populations, say researchers with the University of North Carolina and Agricultural Research Service of the government, who collaborated on the studies. In theory, one selenium-deficient person or animal could produce a new family of virus mutants that could cross species and spread worldwide, causing disease even in well nourished people.
The USDA is now officially on record that nutritional deficiencies cause viral mutations and they expect to find the same results with vitamin-E-deficient mice because both selenium and vitamin E are nutrients that serve as antioxidants in the body. This means that the government is recognizing that free radicals and oxidative stress affects the world of pathogens creating super bugs out of regular critters. They are even going as far as saying that this may help explain the many new strains of influenza virus arising in China, which has widespread selenium-deficient areas.
The implications are enormous for a form of medicine that understands absolutely nothing about nutrition and the science of low level toxicity. Part of our infection fighting arsenal needs to include selenium and ALA (Alpha Lipoic Acid) and this is critical not only for maintaining glutathione levels but also for the neutralization of mercury. Mercury provides the ideal environment for viruses, bacteria, fungi and yeast infections. Though most are in total denial of it, we are as a race being overrun by mercury pollution that is everywhere in the air, water, food, vaccines, dental amalgam and even beauty products.
When a person is bitten by a snake, spider or scorpion it helps the doctors to know which poison they are treating. One cannot say anything about health or disease anymore without dealing with mercury and its rising tide. You cannot treat infectious diseases in effective ways without dealing with the soil of the infection, with the mercury and other chemical toxicities that are driving the pathogens. A doctor needs to know his poisons but most of them find their minds obscured by the denial of the fact that most of the pharmaceuticals they use are mitochondrial poisons. Modern medicine is lost when it comes to dealing with mercury and in fact endorses its use in vaccines and dental medicine.
Garlic is one food that has powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and some scientific studies have found it to be at least as effective as the popular anti-fungal drug, Nystatin, in destroying candida albicans.
We have to change our perceptions about infections and infectious processes. We need to shift away from the competing paradigms of pathogen vs. terrain. We need to deal simultaneously with pathogen, terrain and poison. Certainly we need to deal with nutrition and the use of concentrated nutritional substances that help us deal safely and effectively with infections.
Much more could be said about natural remedies and other substances like colloidal silver, which is known to have antibacterial properties. I would choose iodine first because the body needs it anyway where it does not need colloidal silver. When we use concentrated nutritional substances as antibiotics we are doing a lot more than confronting hostile pathogens. We are supporting total body physiology as well as elimination of heavy metals and other toxic poisons.
Nearly 500,000 people are dying yearly in America due to infectious disease. It now ranks number 3 behind heart disease and cancer in claiming American lives.
a list of things that to avoid to get healthy again.
Anything with sugar ~ sugar feeds the bacteria so they continue to grow
No vinegar ~ mustard, ketchup, mayo and salad dressings, plus any fermented / marinated foods
No yeast ~ read labels ~ this is so many things today, even Campbell soups
Avoid moldy foods like mushrooms, peanuts, watermelon, honey dew and cantaloupe ~ they sit in the soil and the mold grows into their skins ~ mold can feed bacteria, too
I was told to avoid processed foods because of the sugars and yeast in so many of them, many with hidden names plus the processed foods are causing many (most?) of the health issues many are experiencing today. The liver, gall bladder, kidneys and colon all have problems processing all the artificial things put into the body and thousands of people are now paying the price.
If God made it, eat it because it's good for you.
If man made it, avoid it or sooner or later you pay the price.
Avoided the artificial sweeteners because the body can't process them properly and in time, they create many health issues.
Drink lots of cranberry juice and water and avoid things with caffeine (aggravates the situation) and avoid all dairy products which create mucus and can give bacteria a place to "live" as they grow ~ this includes yogurt
Once I went on this diet, I lost 80 lbs, quit having daily headaches, the infections went away and I didn't have sinus and bronchial problems ~ all plagued me for 5 years and I was so sick that I slept 20 to 22 hours a day and missed tons of work ~ almost lost my job at one point.
Once the system is purged of these items, you can occasionally eat some of them again but it's important not to let them build up in your system again where you could end up with infections all over again.
And it's a good idea to get a juicer and make your own juices so you can avoid sugars and you can also use it for vegetables and benefit as you get more vitamins into your system so you get healthier as time goes on. You can take the pulp that is leftover and use it in many foods ~ meatloaf, breads, muffins, cookies and brownies.
For Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I found this...

I'm not a doctor, and this is not medical advice, but here's what a google search turns up:

To speed the healing of a urinary tract infection, add 20 drops each of eucalyptus and sandalwood essential oils to a hot bath, suggests Greenwich, Connecticut, aromatherapist Judith Jackson, author of Scentual Touch: A Personal Guide to Aromatherapy. She says to soak in the tub for ten minutes. Juniper and thyme essential oils may be substituted for theeucalyptus and sandalwood if you prefer those scents, according to Jackson.

While drinking fluids is the best way to flush out the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, some fluids are better than others, says Michael A. Klaper, M.D., a nutritional medicine specialist in Pompano Beach, Florida, and director of the Institute of Nutritional Education and Research, an organization based in Manhattan Beach, California, that teaches doctors about nutrition and its relationship to disease. He says that cranberry juice is probably the best, because it helps prevent bacteria from anchoring to bladder walls. “The key is to drink real cranberry juice, not those cranberry juice cocktails,” he explains. “Those drinks are too sweet. It has to be really tart to work.” If you can’t find cranberry juice, look for cranberry juice concentrate that you can mix with water.

Certified nutritionist Cherie Calbom, M.S., of Kirkland, Washington, co-author of Juicing for Life, suggests drinking 16 ounces of fresh cranberry juice per day to stave off the problem. “Mix it with some fresh apple juice for the best taste,” she suggests.

Like Dr. Klaper, she says to use fresh or frozen cranberries. “If you can’t find them, use cranberry juice concentrate,” she advises. “Mix ½ tablespoon of concentrate with a pint of fresh apple juice

Work the bladder and kidney points on the bottoms of your feet, say Kevin and Barbara Kunz, reflexology researchers in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and authors of Hand and Foot Reflexology. You can also use the corresponding golf ball technique to work the kidney and adrenal gland points on both hands.

Natural Cold Remedies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Honey and lemon:
Oh, elixir of the gods, how you coated and soothed my raw and burning throat! When heated and mixed into tea, you kept me hydrated, and when taken on your own, you quieted my cough.
Why? Lemon dries up congestion, and honey coats a raw and achy throat.
How? Mix a tablespoon each of lemon juice and honey, then microwave it for about 20 seconds (until warm). Swallow it a teaspoonful at a time.
Salt water:
You unsung hero. Your talents often go unnoticed. Salty and lukewarm, you, too, soothed my irritated throat and helped clear out my nasal passages.
Why? Salt water helps ease congestion and dries up nasal passages without causing irritation.
How? Mix 1/2 cup warm water with 1/2 teaspoon non-iodized salt. Use a neti pot (I love mine, though it does take some practice to use it correctly) or bulb syringe to pour the mixture into one nostril while leaning slightly forward. Breathe through your mouth. The salt water should flow out the other nostril. Repeat on the opposite side.
Gargle with salt water to clear out your throat and help dilate capillaries, thus increasing blood flow to your throat.
And the best home remedy of all:
Rice in an old sock!
Warm and dry, you relieved pressure in my cranium when it felt tighter than my skinny jeans. On forehead, eyes, jaw, or neck, you relaxed and pampered me as I tried to rest.
Why? When heated, the rice stays warm and helps soothe pain.
How? Fill an old sock with uncooked rice and sew or tie the top closed. (This is a great use for all those socks that mysteriously disappear in the dryer--and you can use the white rice you've swapped out for brown rice!) Heat the sock in the microwave for a minute or so, until it's warm. Place the sock wherever you're sore. When the sock cools, heat it again. This trick works with other grains, too. (Just don't plan on eating the grains after they've been used in the heat pack!)
This thing is amazing. It's more eco-friendly than those disposable heat wraps for muscles, and it's cheaper, too. As I type, it's wrapped around my neck, and last night, I slept with it over my eyes. It relieved all that painful sinus pressure, albeit momentarily.
I'll be using my rice sock quite often:
On my sore hamstrings after yoga class.
On my low back or neck on those days when I've been sitting for too long.
Under my feet when the office is chilly.
As a natural alternative to an electric blanket when the weather dips down.
Make one tonight. You will feel instantly pampered.
These home remedies couldn't cure me, but they sure did make life a bearable until I could get to the doctor.
Here's one on tea prep that I posted on another team board:
So, over all, I love teas for preventative and curative purposes. Anyway, since we are hitting major tea season here in the Midwest, I thought I'd share my brother's tips for tea preparation:
Heating Water for Green Tea and Herbal "Young" Leaf teas: It is fine to heat water for black tea to boiling, but more delicate teas like green tea and some herbal teas will burn and turn bitter at boiling point. For "medium" teas such as these, heat water to just before true boil. For most pots, this will be just as the first little bubbles appear.
Heating Water for White Tea or sprout/flower teas: Heat water to just to where it steams. "light" teas like white tea, sprout herb teas, and flower herb teas are full of very delicate plants and "baby" plants, even more so than green tea which are young leaves.
Black teas, root teas, and fruit teas are fairly hardy, so boiling away is fine....unless you would like a lighter taste, in which you can prepare as green tea.
Just thought I would share, as I am assuming most people are like me and dislike bitter tea.
Lord, grant me patience, because you grant me strength, I'll end up killing people.
For the coming winter colds and flu, sinus remedies!:
Netti pots are good, but if you tend to drown yourself like me, try use a gentle squeeze bottle. If you don't have the regular solution handy, make a rougly 10% salt water solution, boil and let cool to desired temp.
Tea tree oil swabbed just inside the nostril, or clove oil (but remember to dilute essential oils, 1 or 2 drops to at least a 1/2 cup of carrier oil).
Chicken soup is a natural antihistamine. Add carrots for a vitamin A boost. If you really want to make it good, add as much fresh garlic as you can stand.
Ginger tea with a bit of honey is absolutely the best! Freshly grated ginger root is awesome.
If you start at the first sign of trouble, Vitamin C supplements every hour on the hour can help. But some people can have "stomach problems" with vitamin C, if you catch my drift, so watch yourself.
Zicam swabs are actually a homeopathic remedy and they work wonders!
Here's a tea recipe I got from Betsy, a sparker on another of my teams:
8-10 regular tea bags
1 individual serviing size can of pineapple juice
1 sm can frozen oj concentrate
1-2 teasoppons of each spice
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Cloves
Ginger (just a small pinch)
Lemon juice and sugar to taste
Fill large pot with water and add tea bags - being to rolling boil - turrn down to med low and allow tea to seep for 15-20 minutes making a strong tea.
Remove tea bags
Add juices and spices - stirring well.
Add lemon juice and sugar to taste - stir well.
PLace on back burner on low. Stir each time before serviing as the spices tend to settle.
If I think of anything else, I'll put it in. Sinus infections are rampant in my family, so this is big stuff for us.
If anyone else has any, please post....I am always looking for new tips on this. Love everything posted so far!
Lord, grant me patience, because you grant me strength, I'll end up killing people.
Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day has a different color twist tie. They are: Monday = Blue, Tuesday = Green, Thursday = Red, Friday = White, and Saturday = Yellow. So if today was Thursday, you would want red twist tie; not white which is Fridays (almost a week old)! The colors go alphabetically by color Blue - Green - Red - White - Yellow, Monday through Saturday.
Very easy to remember. I thought this was interesting. I looked in the grocery store and the bread wrappers DO have different twist ties, and even the ones with the plastic clips have different colors. You learn something new everyday! Enjoy fresh bread when you buy bread with the right color on the day you are shopping.
What are Shingles?
Other names: Herpes zoster
Shingles is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have had chickenpox, the virus becomes dormant in your nerve tissue, but it can be reactivated years later as shingles. It is more common in adults between the ages of 60 and 80 and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms of shingles include:
Pain, tingling, burning, itching, or numbness in a certain area of the body
Red rash with fluid-filled blisters that start within a week after the pain. The rash typically occurs on one side of your chest. It can also occur on one side of the face or neck.
Fever
Chills
Headache
After the blisters dry up, usually in one to two weeks, pain can persist. Sometimes, shingles can lead to a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, in which sharp, stabbing pain lasts months to years after the rash has disappeared.
Natural Remedies for Shingles
Although natural remedies are promoted for shingles, it is important that you consult a doctor as soon as possible if you think you have shingles, in order to shorten the infection and reduce the risk of complications. This is especially important if the rash appears near the eye area, which can cause temporary or permanent loss of vision.
Although no natural remedies have yet been proven to be effective for shingles, these are some that are being researched or have been used traditionally.
Proteolytic Enzymes
Proteolytic enzymes are enzymes that are produced naturally by the pancreas to help digest protein we eat.
They are also found in certain foods, such as papaya and pineapple. Supplements derived from papaya (called papain), pineapple (called bromelain), and from animal pancreas can be found online, in health food stores, and in some grocery and drug stores.
In a German study, 96 people with shingles took proteolytic enzymes for 14 days and another 96 people with shingles took acyclovir, a standard antiviral medication. Both groups experienced similar pain relief and skin improvement, with the exception of skin redness, which showed greater improvement with the acyclovir treatment. The group taking proteolytic enzymes had significantly fewer side effects.
Side effects of proteolytic enzymes may include digestive upset and allergic reactions. People with allergies to pineapple or papaya should avoid supplements derived from those fruit.
Proteolytic enzymes, particularly bromelain and papain, should not be taken with warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin, or other "blood-thinning" medications as it may increase the effect of the drug. The proteolytic enzyme pancreatin may interfere with the absorption of the vitamin folate.
Tai Chi
There is preliminary evidence suggesting that tai chi may improve immune function and health in older adults at risk for shingles.
In one study, 36 men and women, aged 60 and over, took a 15 week program of Tai Chi Chih (three 45 minute classes per week) or a wait list control. After 15 weeks, there was an increase in varicella zoster virus-specific immunity and health functioning in people taking Tai Chi Chih. Tai Chi Chih is just one form of the Chinese martial art.
Capsaicin Cream
Although you may not have heard of capsaicin (pronounced cap-SAY-sin) before, if you've ever eaten a chili pepper and felt your mouth burn, you know exactly what capsaicin does. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chili peppers and is sometimes used for postherpetic neuralgia.
In one study, people used either capsaicin cream or a placebo cream. After six weeks, almost 80 percent of people who used the capsaicin cream had significantly greater pain relief compared to people who used the placebo cream.
When it is applied to the skin, capsaicin has been found to deplete substance P--a neurochemical that transmits pain--resulting in an analgesic effect.
Capsaicin cream is also called capsicum cream. It is available in drug stores, health food stores, and online. A typical dosage is 0.025% capsaicin cream applied two to four times a day.
The most common side effect is a stinging or burning sensation in the area. The benefit may take several weeks to develop.
If possible, wear disposable gloves (available at drugstores) before applying the cream. Be careful not to touch the eye area or any areas of broken or sensitive skin. A tube or jar of capsaicin cream typically costs between $8 and $25. To learn more about capsaicin cream, read the Capsaicin cream profile
Additional Tips
The affected area should always be kept clean
Applying wet, cool compresses may reduce pain
Be sure to get plenty of rest
Other Natural Remedies
Acupuncture
Peppermint Oil
Geranium Oil
Some of these are repeats but there are also new ones. Hugs, Jetta
Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little "stringy things" off of it.
Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.
For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.
Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.
Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 For 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummm!
Reheat Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza.
Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
Expanding Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.
Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
Newspaper weeds away
Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.
No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.
Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.
Flexible vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and TA-DA! Static is gone!
Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such
As peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
Reopening envelope
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.
Conditioner
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth.
Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS
Dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh of your lint filter that can add to the potential of the heating unit burning out. The best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months.
Another is oil of peppermint or oil of wintergreen on a damp cloth and wipe everything down. Buy a pack of peppermint gum or wintergreen - and place a stick here and there throughout your ant infestation. They are repelled by the smell. If you have obvious cracks in you walls, or under your sink, you need to caulk them and fill them in.
Bay leaves work on lady bugs. They are bad here - the aggressive orange ones. Bay leaves are supposed to work in ants, too, but have never tried it.
Spray Oil of Citronella on a damp cloth and wipe down walls and cabinets. Insects are repelled by the smell. If used as directed, does not pose a harm to environment, humans or animals and has been used since the 50's in candles, oils, bug sprays, etc. Works with flies, fleas, and spiders, as well. You need to wear gloves, because it can irritate the skin.
You can also wipe everything down with vinegar. Insects are repelled by that smell, too. The vinegar scent throughout your home will only stick around a short time.
What about the ants that make trails on your walls and cabinets? How do you use chalk on the walls and cabinets? They are smart, they are coming out of the walls near the ceiling where I can't reach. Salt has not worked, neither has black pepper, cloves, cayenne. Borox is poison so I don't want to use it. Most of them are on the walls. should I put salt in my bed? The ones in my bed are very random. No big ant lines or parades. They are sneaking in. I've hard about the chalk but how do you use that when they are coming from the walls?
Ants won't cross a chalk line. You can buy spray chalk or use a chalk stick. If you have carpet - sprinkle your carpet with salt. That will kill ants and fleas - vacuum a couple of days later.
If you have a dog with fleas - buy brewer's yeast at a health food store and put it in their food. The fleas don't like the smell of the yeast when it is obsorbed in the body.
Also, when I go camping I use comet which has borax in it and put it all around my tent, they won't cross the comet/ajax line and your tent is safe. I also put it around the table legs on the ground and they won't cross it neither, keeping the ants from your food.
Does anyone know of a natural way to ward off (not kill) ants? I live in a tropial place and I get invaded by ants. I have learned to live with the small ones but lately the bigger red ones that bite are invading my house. They are getting into my bed and I can't sleep at night. Keeping things clean is not enough.
Here is more from my group. Hope it helps, Hugs, Jetta
~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have heard of the duct tape -- I guess that really works well. I have also heard of crazy glue (always too afraid to use that, though...) and also I don't know if it would work on a plantar wart, but my son had a wart on his leg (a very small one) and Lynn recommended apple cider vinegar for it and it took care of it within about 3 days -- it was amazing!!

I found a couple of sites too:

www.homemademedicine.com/home-remedies-for
-warts.html

This one first off goes with a plantar wart -- this lady soaked a cotton ball in white vinegar and then covered it with duct tape -- a double whammy there!

This one talks about apple cider vinegar:

What a great post! Question-I have a plantar wart on the bottom of the heel of my foot. I have had this for almost two months and nothing is getting rid of it. It is extremely painful. Any ideas? I have tried freezing it and the little acid bandaids. I read about duct tape and also dabbing ACV on it and am going to try them next. Any one know if the duct tape or ACV will work? Thanks! Figured this may qualify as a home remedy question..

Pour (generous) salt on half a grapefruit or lemon. Use fruit to clean tub and sinks. Acid cuts the scum and fruit leaves a fresh scent. Rinse and wipe with damp cloth.

WEED KILLER!

Here's a tip that may seem unlikely, but a very good weed killer is plain old household vinegar! Do about a 20% concentration in a spray bottle with a squirt of dish soap mixed in and you will have a dandy weed killer for new growth. You use the soap in the vinegar mix to help it adhere to the leaves of the weeds.

Couple of reservations though. This really is meant for new growth rather than old growth. But what the heck try it anyway, the most it can do is work! The nice part is it really kills the weeds. So, even if those mean old dandelions do start to grow back, squirt them with your handy dandy household weed concoction and it should kill them DEAD! And the best part is you aren't poisoning your yard or other plants

Plugged drains - use one cup of baking soda, one cup of salt and 1/2 cup vinegar. Pour baking soda down sink, salt on top, follow with vinegar. Let it work for a few minutes and then flush with hot water.

For cold sores

L-LYSINE 1000 mg with vitamin c, B6 and Zinc.. The combination is fantastic. Take at least 1 a day for prevention and if you feel even the slightest twinge, take a couple every few hours. You can get the lysine ointment.

But you might want to check out the L-Lysine.(just be sure to get the one with the C,B6 and Zinc.) it works. You might want to start out strong with maybe a couple every few hours, until the virus is eliminated..

If you put pure vanilla extract on the cold sore as soon as you feel the sting they usually won't go any further than the welt.

I found these on a nother site. Hope it helps. I haven't used any of them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These are some of the most helpful homeopathic remedies to have on hand, You can usually purchase them in 30 C potency at a good health food store, and generally they are given until relief is broughtt about and as needed when symptoms return. Always seek medical help for an emergency but homeopathics can help while waiting for medical assistance and often mitigate urgent situations.
Aconite
A remedy to use at the first sign of a fever, also good for shock, where the patient is very chilly. It can often avert a fever if given in the early stages, especially after being chilled or wet.
Apis Mel
This is a remedy for swellings associated with insect bites or bee stings, it is homeopathically prepared from bee stings and will help alleviate swelling and allergic reactions to bee stings and insect bites.
Arnica
This is a wonderful first-aid remedy to have available for injuries and shock. A bruise, or blow to the head or sports injury will often respond well to Arnica and it is usually the first remedy to turn to for this kind of injury.
Calendula
A homeopathic remedy that can also be used topically in tincture form to help large open wounds heal and granulate. If healing is slow and an area of skin needs to be healed Calendula will help.
Carbo vegetalis
The remedy called the 'corpse reviver' can be invaluable where the patient is collapsed and weak or unresponsive. It can help with shock and trauma.
Hepar Sulph
This remedy helps with infections and abscesses that are red, hot and painful, The patient often feels better with heat; they tend to be very irritable and angry.
Hypericum
A remedy to have on hand for puncture wounds that are deep, and there may be nerves affected. It is also excellent for any type of injury to the fingers, such as trapping a finger in a door.
Ledum
Another remedy that can be used for insect bites or puncture wounds, where there is typically less swelling than with Apis Mel, and the area around the puncture feels cold to the touch.
Rhus Tox
A remedy that is invaluable for strains and sprains to ligaments and tendons that are stiff & painful, but improve with motion.
Nux vomica for nausea (sp), car sickness and also weaning off anti-depressants.
carbo veg is also good for gas
traumeel - comes in cream, gel, pills and i think a few other things. this is good for trauma, also internal trauma with emotions
ignatia - also is good for emotions
chamomilla - is awesome for calming one down.
Histamine - i think is better than benedryl - great for allergies and hives - my youngest got hives from some food allergy and my friend gave her this and the hives started disappearing.
Household Tips
Bed Sheets
After drying my sheets, I put both sheets and one pillowcase in the other pillow case. Fold neatly in a square. Next time you change sheets, you just take the one pillow case and all the sheets and pillow case are inside. No need to look for matches. Takes up less storage room too.
Clean your glass shower
To clean the glass in your shower easily, apply lemon juice to the glass with a sponge. Then, take newspaper and wipe the lemon juice off the glass.
It will be clean and sparkle with no scrubbing!
Reheat Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.
Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
Expanding Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar/calories per serving.
Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
Newspaper Weeds-Away
Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go, cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic, they will not get through wet newspapers.
Broken Glass
Use a dry cotton ball to pick up little broken pieces of glass - the fibers catch ones you can't see!
No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket It will keep the mosquitoes away.
Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.
Easier thank you's
When you throw a bridal/baby shower, buy a pack of thank you cards for the guest of honor. During the party, pass out the envelopes and have everyone put their address on one. When the bride/new mother sends the thank you's, they're all addressed!
Bike ID
If you purchase a new bike for your child, place their picture inside the handle bar before placing the grips on. If the bike is stolen and later recovered, remove the grip and there is your proof who owns the bike.
Flexible vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and -- voila -- static is
gone.
Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill it with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry the cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
Reopening envelope
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Voila! It unseals easily.
Conditioner
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair...
Good-bye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," & can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, esp. if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
Take baby powder to the beach
Keep a small bottle of baby powder in your beach bag. When you're ready to leave the beach sprinkle yourself and kids with the powder and the sand will slide right off your skin .
COKE
To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coke into the toilet. Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the
bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coke.
To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a
can of Coke over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in
Coke to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coke into the
baking pan; wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke
into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coke will help loosen grease stains.
It will also clean road haze from your windshield.
for a cough or sore throat
chop 1 medium onion very fine,
cover it with lemon juice,
cover that with honey,
I add a chopped clove of garlic (optional)
let stand 24 hrs drain through sieve or cheesecloth into clean bottle and refrigerate
use as needed 1 tsp usually does the trick.
I add the garlic because it is a natural anti-biotic
Ok...this isn't sooo natural, but it works! I was skeptical.
To get ball point pen ink out of clothing - spray some hair spray on it and dab it away.
One meal at a time, one work out at a time, one day at a time.
This is an oldie but goodie....for carpet stains, apply club soda immediately and it takes the stain right out - this includes red wine, tea and many others. Have a blessed day everyone.
Peace,
Lydia
Home Remedies for Ants
Search online for "ways to get rid of ants", and you're likely to turn up page after page of results, but which ones work and which ones don't? It's not so easy to decide. Save yourself the hassle of sifting through the lore, and give these cheap, natural and science-based ant remedies a try:
Vinegar
Wipe down your countertops, cupboards and any other places where you've spotted ants with a 50-50 mixture of white vinegar and water. Repeat throughout the day to maintain the efficacy.
Why This Works: Two reasons, really: ants hate the smell of vinegar, and it removes the scent trails that they use to get around
Chalk/ Baby Powder
Draw a line of chalk or sprinkle baby powder across the spot where the ants are entering your home.
Why This Works: Talcum powder, an ingredient in both chalk and baby powder, is a natural ant repellent. Just be careful if you decide to use it: some studies have linked talc to cancer.
Borax
Mix together equal parts Borax and either syrup or jelly. Then, place where the ants will find it.
Why This Works: Once consumed, Borax damages both the ants' digestive systems and their outer skeletons, resulting in death.
Herbs/Spices
Spinkle cinnamon, mint, chili pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves or garlic – whichever one you happen to have – in the area where you've seen ants and along your home's foundation. Bay leaves can also be placed in cabinets, drawers and containers to further deter those pesky critters.
Why This Works: Many plants – including the ones listed – give off a strong scent to repel ants and other insects in the wild, and it works just as well in your home.
Coffee Grounds
Sprinkle your used coffee grounds in the garden and around the outside of your house.
Why This Works: Ants are repelled by the scent given off by the grounds; and incidentally, so are cats.
Cucumber/Citrus Peels
Leave the peelings in areas of known ant activity.
Why This Works: Cucumber and citrus peels are toxic to the types of fungi that ants feed on, and therefore avoided by the ants
Make Your Own Flea Spray
In search of a cheap, but effective flea repellent for your pooch? Then, try this: mix equal parts white vinegar and water together in a spray bottle, and apply the mixture directly to your dog's coat. Finish by working it in with your hands, and your pooch is protected from those pesky fleas.
Why This Works
Fleas hate the smell and taste of vinegar; and do their best to avoid it.
Benefits of Using Vinegar as a Flea Spray
• inexpensive
• no harsh chemicals to irritate skin
• fragrance-free
• pet-safe and kid-safe
• environmentally-friendly
• soothes and heals any existing flea bites
Tips and Warnings
1) Repeat every couple days to maintain the effectiveness
2) This spray can also be used on cats, but be warned: most cats hate the smell of vinegar
3) Do not reuse empty cleaner bottles– they could contain chemical residues that are harmful to your pets.
Homemade Roach Killer
Roaches are never welcome guests, but that doesn't need you need to coat your home in pricey chemicals to get rid of them. Here's a homemade roach killer that will get the job done:
What You Need:
• Borax
• Sugar (granulated or powdered)
What You Do:
Mix borax and sugar together in equal parts. Then, apply it along the baseboards, in cracks, under cabinets, under the sink and anywhere else you've seen roaches. Reapply as needed until all bugs are gone.
Why This Works:
Roaches consume the mixture because they are attracted to the sugar. Once consumed, the borax damages both their digestive system and their outer skeleton, resulting in death. This works very much like the boric acid found in commerical products, but costs much less.
Benefits of Using Borax to Kill Roaches
• inexpensive
• chemical-free
• fume-free
• environmentally-friendly
Tips
1) Borax (20 Mule Team Borax) can be found in the laundry aisle at the store, since it is most commonly used as a laundry booster
2) Store any unused portions in an air-tight container to maintain freshness, and be sure to label it
3) It may be a couple of weeks before you notice a decline in the population
Warnings
1) Keep away from children and pets
2) Borax loses some of its effectiveness when it gets wet
