I had surgery the end of December. During recovery was the perfect time for me to make changes to my life. I have lost 15# since surgery. I have eliminated processed foods reduced red meat and I have increased water, fruit, and vegetables in my diet and keep my sodium intake below 1300 mg daily. I also started exercising - starting with a few steps and increasing by a few minutes at a time until I was able to build up time- I walked twice a day. My BP dropped to 86/54 and my surgeon had me. stop my BP medication and diuretic (I have been on them over 10 years). I do continue to monitor my BP 2-3 times a day to make sure things remain in low range. It takes extra planning and tracking but the results have been effective. My husband has been extremely supportive and walks with me gradually increasing the distance he can tolerate.

I know everyone is not able to get off their medication and such rapid results are not the normal progression. For me making a few major lifestyle changes has brought unexpected rewards.

The beauty of chia seeds is you can put them in anything. Unlike flax seed if you do not want to grind them you don't need to, just toss them in. They hold moisture, if added to baked goods, so you need a little bit extra water. Youo can use them in place of eggs- if you grind & soak them they jell a bit. Or you can replace part of your oil with the jelled seeds. Nobody will notice them in soup and I just throw a few TBS in muffins or sprinkle them whole on top before baking.

What else do you put the Chia seeds in? I know the Today Show is doing a biggest loser type of thing and that was the first thing the health coach said to buy and use everyday.

Dee, You are doing a great job, congratulations on the 20 pounds. My exercise was walking the dog and now it has been so cold with below zero wind chills i haven't been doing anything. I have everything I need downstairs in my little area but i have a VERY bad habit of procrastination along with always putting things I think need to be done right away before myself. i had lost 20 also and then hit a plateau of an 8 pound range going nowhere. Some of my family joined our Studio North to exercise but i have everything here and don't have to go out in this cold. Just need the motivation to get down those stairs. My BP went way down when I lost the weight so i want to finish to goal and keep the weight off my knees--i bad knee-i new knee-. Reading your post along with some thoughts of my own has given me a push.
I agree, teddy and i both need to post food. I just bought the new tracker but haven't set it up yet waiting for myself to get back in the groove. Health problems with my hubby and this awful cold has not helped but i know I would feel better to get the exercise.
Keep up the good work Dee. . Georgine emoticon together.

Teddy Teddy - I want to encourage you to use Spark People to track your food. It really does make a difference. I'm by far not perfect, but logging everyday even when I don't want to really focuses us on what we are eating,

About exercise. I've been doing Pilates for a year and a half. I wasn't losing much weight, about a pound or two a month. Which you can say that is better than gaining. In late September I joined a gym within 3 miles from my home. I go about 5 times a week even when I don't want to because when I am finished exercising, I feel great. I take classes, spinning, zumba, insanity, etc. I have lost about 20 pounds....but the best thing is that I feel so wonderful and walk taller. I have a ways to go. I have found that the more I exercise the more I want to. And it amazes me that I still struggle and am out of breath, but I have a lot more endurance and can pretty much keep up with the class. I honestly can't wait to see my doctor on the 24th. I know that my blood work will show improvement and my blood pressure will be a lot better. Believe me, it took a lot out of me when I first started but I kept going and it does get easier

I had an echocardiogram yesterday to follow progression of mitral regurgitation (causes a murmur) and got the results within an hour. Results were excellent and showed improved mitral regurg from moderate (2+) to mild to moderate (1-2). Other parameters were improved also, so I am pleased with the results.

My blood pressure is not under control, though and my doctor said I am at a maximum dose of Norvasc. She agreed with me when I said I should lose weight to improve my blood pressure. So far, I have lost about 3 lb since then (just before Thanksgiving) but have stayed the same weight for quite awhile due to not tracking my food. I also need to increase my activity especially since I have been rather sedentary of late.

I am hoping to soon be off my B/P medications with losing weight. I have been taking a pill everyday for the last 37 years! Would love to control it on my own.
Sometimes I even question taking it as mine has been steady for the last 3 years in the 112/78 range; but I guess until I lose more weight I won't chance it.

Losing weight really can make a huge difference in blood pressure for many folks. But there are some folks whose problems are caused by other factors, such as inherited sleep apnea, for example. Of course, sleep problems, which often do affect blood pressure, can be caused or made worse by excess fat, especially if it leads to breathing disruption, such as snoring.

I know that is a good feeling to see that BP in good numbers. As i said, i take one 20 mg of lsinopril and stayed around 130 -can't remember the bottom--until i lost weight and it dropped into the teens. Losing weight sure helps and I didn't have to take any more medication. Now i am trying to lose the rest of this weight, that is going to take more emoticon exercise and posting food etc. but i want the weight off my knees and hips. Already had one knee done and i am sure its wearing out had a lot to do with the weight I was carrying so i am trying. emoticon

Hi everyone. I take 20 mg. of Lisinipri twice a day along with another B/P medicine and also take potassium daily since I also am on Lasix. My medicine cabinet looks like a pharmacy. But at least my B/P is down to a normal range now. It's been running about 117/64 which is much better than 199/100. That was scary as I had just awakened and just out of bed.

Have a son living with me who has non-curable brain cancer. He does not have much energy, so we watch lots of movies. So it hard for me to get in the exercise that I need. But, I am taking my meds and last trip to the doctor - according to her scales I have lost 10 pounds. I was surprised because have only lost about 5 according to mine. And the blood test was very good.

Good morning! Just remembered to take my pill. I think I said i was taking 5mg of lisinopril but it is 20 mg. Somehow an old prescription of hubbys was still up in the cupboard, thought i had cleaned all that out.. I have a bag full of outdated pills so need to ask at the pharmacy if they dispose of them, I had asked the doctor about the cramps and he was concerned about potassium but as I said, that was fine. Told me to drink lots of water which i do. Also take calcium with Vit D.Have a great day, beautiful weather here, Georgine emoticon emoticon

Had to check my lisinopril, Mine is 5 mg and i hope if i get more weight off I can drop it but have lazy kidneys so maybe that can't happen. I get cramps in my feet and legs too and the doctor asid drink lots of water. As i said my potassium is in the normal range. I even put the bar of soap in bed as so many say that helped them but now i have been walking Brandy a lot more so the cramps in my feet got worse. I was fine for a long while til i started walking so hope it will eventually go away. ?? emoticon Georgine

So far since having my Lisinopril changed from 10/12.5 to just plain 10 mg Lisinopril; my BP seems to be holding pretty steady between 115-126/70-80. I haven't noticed much difference in the way I feel but I seem to be having less foot and leg cramps. I have to get blood work this week and it will include potassium & magnesium. Interested in seeing what my potassium level is.

I just went to the store and forgot to buy bananas! Every morning I have a lite yogurt and banana. But I will say I don't like it if the get to ripe either. I'm trying to get my vitamins thru my food now. So my fridge is filled with fruits and veggies of all types. My weight is down by 6lbs in 3wks..the most I've lost in 6 months! This has been the hardest weight loss I've ever had. What are some of your BP readings? Mine was so high until my divorce...wat does that say?? lol!

I buy bananas every week and alternate them with breakfasts. as i said, my potassium is always normal during check ups so I don't feel the need to eat tons. I like them but would not like to have to do that and don't like them when they are over ripe.New month, time to check BP, i don't do it as often as maybe i should. Have seen the doctor enuff lately and it is always fine. as i said, i lost that 20 pounds and my BP dropped into the teens. I actually thought there was something wrong with me! what a good surprise. Have a good day, Ge emoticon orgine

I have never cared for bananas - but do try to eat 2 or 3 a week. And the doctor has me on potassium tablets. My sister is the banana fanatic!! When she was about 4 years old Mom had bought some bananas for a pie - about 5 or 6. When she went to get them, they were gone. And so was Linda - not to be found!! We searched the neighborhood - finally she came out from behind the garage. And there we found the peelings.
She still loves them - - - - -

The easiest way to boost yor potassium Is to eat bananas. I just wanted to updated my "juicing" project. I had to cut back recently on a few of the fruits and veggies that were causing a problem. I stopped adding oranges and other "high fructose" fruits.I also removed spinach. I found that these increased my uric acid production and cause my elbows to hurt. Less of these and more water fixed this. I had forgotten to mention that I've been on prednisone for severe asthma for 6 yrs. After years of struggle.and different other meds I have reduced my pred. use from 40mg to 10mg/day. This is a major reason why my BP was so high..but diet is critical. I think I have found a "happy balance" of all these factors and I will continue to refine my life til I "get it right!" Thanks again for all your support snd good luck on your journeys!

My doctor took me off the water pill but he always checks my potassium when I go in for a BP check. When i track my food it always says I am low on potassium but when the doctor checks it it is fine. I always want it checked even tho i am off the water pill.

If you take a diuretic be sure and eat lots of potassium rich foods!

If you make the unconditional commitment to reach your most important goals, if the strength of your decision is sufficient, you will find the way and the power to achieve your goals.

wow!! That is some story and I am so glad you have made it thru it all and back to good health!! I just gave my juicer to my granddaughter, i think she will be needing it soon but I can always get another one. I also understand about the divorce and our lousy courts. My youngest daughter got her divorce and later married a great guy but his ex and her ex passed all kinds of nasty rumors around. My cousin's daughter got a divorce and now can't move because they have a 14 year old daughter and the judge refuses to recognize that the daughter doesn't want anything to do with the father. So it goes in our courts. i am so sorry you had to endure so much but found a way to get healthy and get by it. Thanks for sharing a wonderful part of your life with us. Now, should I buy a juicer or see if granddaughter will use the one I gave her. Take care. You should blog your experiences. Your story is emoticon and so are you. thanks again for sharing!
