And, not only do they take your BP when you first get there and are probably nervous, most of time you're sitting perched on that examining table with your feet dangling. This can raise BP as well.

As soon as you are called into a Drs. Office, they take your BP, so you don't sit there and wait for 5 minutes, and also if when the Nurse or CNA takes your BP if it is a bit high and then the Dr or NP comes right behind her and will also take your BP sometimes it might be sitting 5 minutes and sometimes not, your BP can also go up by being stressed at hearing the the Nurse's reading and so it goes. Stress from worrying, Stress form Waiting, and etc

I know that the research I've done tells me that oatmeal (not the instant, but 'real' oatmeal) is good for your cholesterol levels, BP levels and overall good heart health. Almonds are supposed to be good for blood sugar, too (from what I've read). I have to say that it must be true! I went back to the doctor several weeks ago for my regular checkup (last one had been 4 months before) and was really apprehensive because I didn't think I had changed my habits enough to make a difference. I hadn't been exercising as much as I wanted to, I hadn't lost any weight and was still not eating right consistently (I would do well for a few days, and then eat junk food and high-fat/salt foods). However, he said that all of my lab work was good and that my numbers had actually come down (A1C, cholesterol--which had been okay, but had crept up a bit). The only thing he said was that I needed to lost weight (I agreed, of course). I joked that it must have been all that oatmeal I'd been eating. As far as I can tell, but only changes I made during that time was that I had starting fixing oatmeal (with no added sugar, but lots of cinnamon, 1/2 serving of almonds and fresh fruit) at least four times per week.

Now I'm curious to see what my number are when I go back in December, because I will continue to eat oatmeal and am determined to lose at least 30 pounds by then!

I'm still in school so take my info with a grain of salt (just don't ingest the salt :). The systolic or top number is the more variable of the two numbers. It measures the amount that your heart has to pump to get the blood all the way out to your fingers and toes. The bottom number is a measure of the resistance of your vessels between heartbeats. I won't bore you with the pharmacology of BP meds but different medications affect you in different ways. For example a medication that relaxes the vessels lowers the bottom number directly and the top number indirectly by making it easier to pump the blood. Medications that directly effect the top number usually reduce the force of contraction of your heart. I've also been learning recently that people become tolerant to medications as the body starts to compensate for the effects of the medicine. This is why people need to periodically change medicines.

Many things can effect the top number such as stress, pain, movement, even low batteries in an automatic blood pressure cuff. You probably already know this but when you take your blood pressure make sure that you have not used nicotine recently and sit for about 5 minutes before taking it sitting.

I hope that was helpful. If anyone with more knowledge than me sees something amiss in what I said please correct me. I'm still learning and there is a lot to learn.

Anyone know what could cause the top number to go higher? I have been on BP meds for more than 2 decades. They have been tweaked or changed over the years. The last 5 weeks I have noticed the top number getting higher and higher. I went to see the PA yesterday (doctor was not available). He changed my meds. Still wondering what could cause the top number to go higher while the bottom number stays normal. Any ideas????

Thanks for the encouragement Moodykeys.

I am trying to get off meds...I was actually placed back on a water pill, but my pressure is still too high...I have found that when I make sure I have my potassium levels for the day met (even if I need to take a supplement) that helps. I am still learning...magnesium and calcium also plays a major role in getting and keeping blood pressure down, so I am going to take supplements to help in those areas as well

good luck on your plan sounds good. and all that heavy tree work, hope you ate a little more that day to cover all the calories you must have burned. tried to have pills lowered but when they took me off the water pill my blood pressure read 154. 164 etc. too high. it doesn't usually go over 138, the highest ..maybe if I get down some more.

keep on trucking

We had several massive trees taken down and my DH only let the tree crew clean up the 1 in front of the house so it's up to the 2 of us to clean up the others. Wow, talk about heavy yard work. I spent at least 3 hours yesterday dragging limbs and picking up parts of tree trunks and moving them to a pile. Will be back at it again today.

Got my BP pill into me about half hour ago and getting ready to do my exercises. Good job everyone for taking your meds and doing your exercises. I watched a segment on the news quite awhile ago about a woman who KNEW she had hypertension but didn't do anything about it. To make a long story shorter, she ended up having a stroke and was in a wheelchair and her husband was caring for her at home. She said that if she had know what the consequences could be about not addressing hypertension she would have gone to the doctor. That's what scared me a lot. I was already on my meds and I made sure I WAS taking them along with exercising to get my heart healthy. We can't go wrong with helping our body get healthy. I weighed in yesterday at my group and I lost another 1 3/4 lbs. Yahool. I hit 140-ville!

Went to see the doctor Monday my BP is moving in the right direction 135/79. My last visit was 160 over 94 so I'm glad it's improving with the help of the additional pill. I also lost 5 pounds. My doctor said all my additional numbers are excellent (kidney panel, cholesterol and blood sugar) I'm so excited. When I started this journey I was 240 pounds with a nasty cough with zero energy. My heart already started to show signs of enlargement due to my uncontrolled bp. Now almost 2 years later I'm starting to see the goal post. emoticon

HI, there is a thing called "white coat high blood pressure " and what it is is that your blood pressure goes up at the doctors because you are nervous, and anything you could do is if you are taking your blood pressure at home take it to the doctors to make sure the calibration is correct , hope this helps you emoticon

I've been on a different bp pill for a month now. Lostartin HZT. Before I was only on a water pill and then had the need to take a potassium pill also.

I had my Dr. appt for my blood pressure check today. In my own log it is great around 120/73 but at the doctor's it was 140/83 Shucks! But it was down 20 points from the last time I was there. No new instructions. Come back in 4 months. My potassium was fine without the extra pills I was taking before. So that is good. He said just do a little exercise. I laughed and told him I walk 6,200 steps a day and showed him my tracker.

I still have 7-10 lbs. to lose and will try real hard to do it.

LindaKay, You have already come a long way in recovery and you sound like you are continuing on and doing well. That was and is quite an experience and sudden change in your life to overcome. There are many people in Sparks with different problems as well as teams that deal with similar problems. I admire what you have already accomplished with hard work. I hope Sparks can help you a lot as you look around and see what might interest or help you. emoticon

I pray that you continue to improve. My husband had a cerebral bleed 2 years ago and he is continuing to improve. He was also diagnosed with cancer 10 months later.. God has a plan and and purpose and HE is healing him from the inside out

Take it one day at a time and keep believing that you are destined for God's healing power.

Working on some cardio and strength training today. Just a reminder to keep doing what you can, not just for now but for the future. Before my stroke 4 months ago I was walking a lot, doing some strength training, and going to water aerobics. Then, bam, out of the blue I was knocked cold and nearly died. I was doing what I was doing to the results then, but the docs and therapists say the reason I lived and am expected over time to make a full recovery is because of the shape I was in before my stroke, which I never thought about before.

I did eat within my calorie range yesterday and intend to do so today. Not always the best things, but baby steps and at least not tons of calories like times I've done. I walked 3 miles yesterday and today. I've been doing that for a couple of months but it is still so hard and I have to stop and rest frequently. For those that don't know me, I was doing so well, hiking, water aerobics, working, and doing other things. I just barely turned 59 last week. On Halloween I had a stroke with a brain bleed and spent almost 5 weeks in 3 different hospitals (one was only a few hours in my home town before they transferred me out) and then 2 months in rehab until insurance wouldn't pay more. I'm still fighting to get back and everything hurts so much. Working on my walking and the exercises I learned in physical, occupational, and speech therapies. But my eating has stunk and I've gained back about 20 lbs since then because of so much bed time and now staying with son and his family in another state. It came totally out of the blue that morning. But I am fighting back. In the hospital I had not much to do except think about what they would bring for the next meal as I was 6 hours from my hometown. I did have 2 wonderful people from a private team here who went to visit me that I had met online but not in person until then. Then on Nov 21 I was transferred from AZ hospital to the Dallas hospital that was closer to where my oldest son lives (Ft. Worth) and they has a strong therapy aspect too. It was inpatient and I was there until Dec 3rd. We had a menu there like a restaurant with all kinds of things to order to meals. It was the highlight of my day LOL. My eyes were way way off because of the brain bleed until the swelling went down and I got new glasses, so I couldn't even watch tv or read. Just listened to tv with my head covered when not in therapy (or eating!) Of course when I went to son's house I ate what they had. So now I'm working on eating some of what they have but also on my own things and keeping calories under control. Son works a lot, and frequently out of town. DIL also works a lot from home or wherever she can be reached on her cell, and a lot of time with her parents and sisters. I go with them sometimes, but am finding out more and more how to carve my own niche here. Things are so very much harder than they used to be but I've also been told by a few professionals that the best way for me to get better is to keep using the muscles and speech (it's not too bad but I can hear it) through exercise and walking to build the neurostransmitters again. So that's what I'm doing.
I realty got off on that, and didn't mean to. I just joined a week or so ago and I guess that's why I'm explaining myself. Anyway, I'm and working on eataing better, getting my veggies and fruits in, and doing exercise even if it is so much harder/different than before.
Good luck to all of you! One day, one moment at a time.

Linda

Doing well trying to get to my goal weight and exercising so I have a strong heart. I'm walking with Leslie Sansone DVDs, doing her March challenge, doing strength toning, and just being as active as I can. We do what we can to regain or keep our health. We DO have control over that. No excuses for me.

You are doing awesome even though you had a rocky start. You can do this! I had a stroke with a brain bleed on Halloween out of the blue. Had just had my annual physical a few months ago and other than needing to lose about 40 lbs and blood pressure being borderline there weren't any problems when that was done in August. Ended up spending almost 5 weeks in 3 hospitals and then 2 months of rehab before the ins for rehab ran out. Gained almost 20 lbs in all that time in hospital beds I need to lose plus the others. We can all help each other!

I want to welcome all the other new members to the team, my name is Ali and I suffered from a heart attack, the Cardiologist said, then last October I gained 20-30 pounds in 2-3 weeks.
My legs got so swollen that I could barely walk, getting in and out of the car was almost impossible.
My GP told me that I should go to the ER but I stubbornly didn't go because I was worried about the cost! Don't ever let this happen to you, when your DR suggests going to the ER, take their advice and go hang the cost! Your life could be at stake!
I went to see the same DR again a couple weeks later, this time she told me that tests showed heart problems. This time she was more assertive with me and insisted that I go to the ER!
My husband who was with me at the DR's office took me directly to the ER! They looked at my ashen color and admitted me directly to the hospital. When I was admitted, I had 20% heart function and weighed over 316 pounds!
The DR at the hospital told me I needed to lose over 100 pounds, because there was too much stress on my poor heart. I was in the hospital for over 4 days, I was placed on a low sodium food plan and large amount of Lasix, to flush my system from the blood in my body that my heart couldn't filter which had pooled in my legs, ankles and feet. When I got home I continued doing everything the Cardiologist told me to do, and lost 90 pounds. I am still on the Lasix, but down to 20 mg of Lasix from 80 mg daily.
During the holidays I got a little complacent and forgot what I needed to do and gained a little weight back. The DR told me this would happen, so I was slightly no too surprised when I got down to 40 mg, and l gained 5 pounds back. My weight would yo-yo back and forth between 227 and 231.8. Now that I'm using only 20mg daily my weight is hovering between 230 and 232. That is the highest weight so far and I am scared stiff about gaining all my weight back and putting additional stress on my heart.
I started SparkPeople about 3 weeks ago, the beginning of January. I love the program and have dived in with the enthusiasm that I had when I first got out of the hospital. The Cardiologist says I have been a model patient and refers to me as the incredible shrinking woman! I'm so happy that SparkPeople was introduced to me, I really do trust, and believe you can too, that we will be able to lose excess weight and help heal our health problems.
I feel really excited to join this group because other than this the heart health team, I can lean on this community for support and encouragement and I am here for this team also!

Keep in touch and good luck with your heart and BP issues, take care of yourselves!

From one SPARK WOMAN to SparkPeople everywhere. Find the gratitude in your day and lastly, Be the "SPARK" in someone's life today!

I belong to a weight loss support group called TOPS and I've volunteered to do next week's program. We all take turns discussing or presenting some type of vital healthy information for the week. I have decided to do a presentation on the pistachio as Feb. 26th is National Pistachio Day. I came across these muffin recipes and I thought it looked pretty interesting. I'm going to make mini ones to share with the group.

Linda and Piggyway, Ii hope things get better and easier for you both. I am still walking on the bad knee that needs to be done along with skin allergies. I saw one post that asked, can you do it for one month?-- and want to try that in March, my b'day month, make a b'day present to me. It is never easy with food being so tied up with our emotions and life events, I stumble a lot but just get up and keep going, not every day is easy but I try to use it well.
Big snow storm supposed to begin soon, possibly up to 9 inches, i hope it will be less. I like to shovel to be outside and get exercise but this might be more than i can handle.
Hope everyone has a good day, just remembered i need to take my BP pill and could use a BP check as well. Georgine emoticon

Trying to get back on track. Walking and exercise pretty good but food is harder staying with my son/dil and there kids in a different state. I can walk a couple of places now but not much near me. They work long shifts or out of town for a few days at a time. No car over here yet and still restricted from driving because of the stroke a few months ago. I have to find a way to do better. I spent 5 weeks in hospitals to where the main interest was the next meal and I gained about 20 lbs since Halloween i need to lose. I can do this!

I try to consume 1 source of potassium every day. I also take CoQ10 to help regulate it. That does help. I can tell the difference when I lay off of it for a few days.
