I have been seeing some great improvement in my bp since starting here.
I have been taking Norvasc 5 mg and HCTZ (water pill) 25 mg Since I started working out my bp reading was staying around 113/60 so on Friday my doc reduced the HCTZ to 12.5 mg and says we may be discontinuing that within the next few weeks but he wants to take it slow.
The Norvasc? I might be stuck on it for awhile, but I can live with that for now.

I was having to take Verapamil HCL 180 mg plus Triamterene/ HCTZ tab ( which is a water pill) and I hated it, My skin was so sun senstive I blistered my head though my hair! So I was determind to get off ! Started working out, taking baby asprin before bed, taking fish oil, and started eating lots of veggies. I started montoring my Bp everyday and when it went down took that to the Doc. and she took my off the Verapamil, I still check it every few days. Last check : 107-72, I am hoping that I will be able to drop the water pill at some point.
Good luck with your goals emoticon

my b.p. readings are approximately between: 113/66 and 125/75. i have been off of the 5 mg altace and b.p. readings are the above.
the new lady dr. says that in order to wean off the meds, it takes about a month of recording the readings, and that it would go up before then if my body was not ready to be taken off the med. anyways, my readings have stayed stable, and yesterday, 05/25/10, she took me off of the 20 mg of adalat xl
- that just leaves me with 10 mg of altace, just one pill a day.
- she told me that my b.p. will go up abit, but not that bad.
- i asked her if my pressure starts going up, what do i do then? she told me that i would just start taking the adalat xl once again.

- my blood and urine tests were excellent, with all perfect values, and she did an evaluation (global risk assessment for women), and i came in at a 1% chance of developing heart disease. she told me that no one ever gets 0%. i am really hyped about that. i have been going to the gym, exercises, tai chi, and walking alot. my eating still needs alot of control, but, all in all, a 200% improvement. she is willing to work with me, well, that is a first.
i trust all in well with you all, and i certainly hope so.

hi there once again,
hope all is well with you. i have not been on line here for quite awhile. i did see the lady doctor and showed her all my b.p. readings. i told her how sick i have been feeling over the past month.
she told me to stop the altace 5mg in the afternoon.
it is now day 13 that i am off the 5 mg, and b.p. is close to 117/62 to 112/63. sometimes lower.
anyways, she said the bp meds should be adjusted, since the readings are so low, so she suggested that i stop taking the 5 mg in the afternoon. i told that to my dr in alberta, and he agreed.
she also told me to make an appointment with her in a month's time, and we can go from there. she said that she would like me to cut down on the altace, then the adalat last. she said we will go slow on cutting me back.
actually, a walk in clinic doctor suggested that i:
keep adalat xl in the morning as is
cut the morning altace down to 5 mg.
keep evening altace the same.
that is what you suggested.

i hope this lady dr knows what she is doing. i am so scared of mistakes and how they affect me and my overall trust for doctors here in vernon, bc.

hope to hear from you soon.........

please take care and hope your weekend is a good one.

as ever................paiton

Hopefully this new lady doctor will be someone you feel you can work with.
The first thing I would suggest you do is:
Keep the Adalat in the morning as is
Cut the morning Altace down to 5mg
Keep the evening Altace as is for now.
Keep an eye on your BP. If it remains down for at least 2 weeks and if you are still getting dizzy, cut the Adalat to every 1 1/2 days if you can keep it that organized! Example - take it Monday morning, then Tuesday evening, then Thursday morning, etc. When you meet with this new doctor explain to her what you've been doing. Make sure you have a list of all your BP readings for at least the week prior to the appointment. Also, have several readings from before each time you altered your dose. Emphasize to her that you were getting dizzy and that's why you started cutting back on the meds. She may cut one of the meds out completely and/or decrease the dosages of both. Seeing a naturopath may be a good idea as well. If this new doctor is someone you can work with she should be willing to work with a naturopath to coordinate your care. Some herbs can cause a prescription drug to have either a stronger effect or a weaker effect. If the two of these professionals don't want to work together, at least make sure each of them knows what the other one is doing to you. For example, if you were on blood thinners for history of a blood clot or something, then you twisted your knee and your regular doc told you to take aspirin or ibuprofen, he would have to know you were already on a blood thinner because these meds combined can cause a life threatening situation - the aspirin and ibuprofen also thin the blood. The same can happen with prescriptions and herbals so make sure everyone knows what you're taking!
Where are you located? Does everyone have Olympic fever?
Can't wait to hear how you're progressing!

hi back atcha! it is good to hear from you once again. it is so hard to find a good dr. here. i am actually speaking of a good doctor that will help me get off these meds as i progress. it seems that they don't want to work with a patient who is trying to improve their life and get healthy once again. i may have to go to a naturopath or something. i find that if i am on the exercise bike i do get light headed to lightly dizzy sometimes. it does scare me. i have an appointment with a lady physician who is taking new patients at the end of the month. hopefully she will help me. otherwise, yes, i believe it is time to cut back.
20 mg adalat in the morning
10 mg altace in the morning
then
5 mg of altace in the evening
i am thinking of taking the 5 mg of altace, and taking them every second day.
and for how long would i do this? as i would be weaning myself right off the 5 mg first. then once my bp is stablized once again, and nice and low, then work on decreasing the 10 mg of altace in the morning. should i leave the adalat till last?
please, your input is valuable to me.
i hope all is well with you and your family. i hope your health is very good as well. i look forward to hearing from you once again, and have a wonderful day!.....paiton

Hi Paiton!
Your BP is excellent! How are you taking your meds now? If you're still taking them as originally ordered, it's time to start cutting back. If you've already followed my suggestions in my previous post then maybe it's time to start taking them every other day. You don't want your BP to get too low or you might get lightheaded. Sounds like you're doing great! Let me know what you're doing. Did you ever find a doctor you liked?

hello again
yes, i do monitor my blood pressure daily. i have for about 3 years now.
my so-called doctor told me that he has taken patients off of b.p. meds permanently even after some have been on them up to 10 years and more. he told me that i am not under alot of stress anymore, that i am eating properly, etc., and that if i wanted to stop then just stop.
he told me that he has some patients that are taking b.p. meds because of drinking alcohol, and once they stop drinking, and the b.p. goes down he takes them off the meds.
as i am in alot better physical shape, eating properly, but still losing very slowly, my b.p. is around 106/59 at rest. at times it has gone down to 90/59 or so. so am pondering the next move. possibly a good naturopath, if i can find one. even taking hawthorne and other herbs etc., and go off the pills. another possibility is strauss heart drops.
please any other suggestions?

I was on two BP meds. (Atenolo and Norvasc), but since I stated Curves and lost about 20 lbs., I'm only taking the Norvasc now. And, yes, I DO take my BP everday and it's about "normal".

The first question is, how is your BP? Do you have a home monitor that is accurate? Have you compared it to the one at a clinic or office?
If you are truly getting no help from your doctor and you BP is definitely getting lower, the first thing I would do is continue with the Adalat XL 20mg each morning, and the Altace 5mg in the evening. Since you obviously have 5mg Altace I would start taking that in the morning instead of the 10mg. This may be a problem when you go to get a refill, though. I don't know if the pharmacy will give you 2 5mg for each 10mg you would usually receive. You could try and ask them. Do that for several months at least. If your weight continues to drop and your BP continues to be stable then I would drop the morning Altace completely, continue with the evening one and the morning Adalat.
Hope this helps and hope you find a doctor you can work with.

Also should add that a doctor should tell which med to wean off of first. If I were you, I'd call your old doc for a recommendation. You need to carefully monitor your bp also. After weaning off of the Toprol, my heart rate would go crazy with any strenuous exercise for the first couple of months. That was easier to deal with than the irregular heartbeat from blood pressure getting to low.

How low is your bp?

Some medicines can cause heart problems if you go off them too fast. It would be best if you could consult with a doctor first.

When my doc weaned me off of Toprol XL, he had me take it every other day for a week when I got to the lowest dose. Weaning off of bp meds can be dangerous. My husband had to wait 3 months for an appointment with a doctor here in Colorado and then it took three more months to wean him off of Catapress. Good luck!

hi there!
anyone who has been weaned off of blood pressure medications that are in capsule form, please, please let me know how it was done properly.
as well, if you have been on them a minimum of 4 years straight!!!
the type i am on are: (adalat xl 20 mg)- taken in the morning - lowest dose, but cannot be cut in half.
(altace 15 mg/day) in capsule form. (10 mg in the am, and 5 mg in the evening)
the doctors here are absolutely horrible. i have moved from another province and the dr. i have been seeing for 30 yr is 450 miles away. the drs. here have not been helpful, and cannot get a doctor. there aren't any accepting new patients, and the walk in drs. are a joke. helpful suggestions etc., please, please, please!!!
