Hope you don't have shingles!

I am hanging in there. I was hired for a PT job today and I'm excited because I can continue to do my volunteering and anything else I need/want to do. Nothing planned for this weekend but my husband is doing a few things for me. I may head to the library and do a little shopping.

I hope the appt goes well, and I really hope you don't have shingles. My brother had them when he was younger, and they didn't seem like a fun experience. :( Great job on the steps!

Good morning ladies...and happy Friday. Yes Monday was my 35th birthday...I'm getting old! lol

The staples and stitches come out Monday, I can't wait! I have an appointment with my normal doctor this morning though, I fear I've come down with a sinus infection and I want her to check a rash that has formed on my rib cage since the hospital, make sure it's just from rubbing and not shingles or something. My sister has had shingles and it did attack the nerve right under and around her breast and rib cage. I know my immune system is probably slightly down because of all the antibiotics they pumped me with in the hospital (fear of staph infection). But I am up to about 4500 steps a day so far, that's great considering I still have all the stitches and staples in me.

How are you ladies doing? Anything fun planned for the weekend?

I've only had small amounts of stitches at any point in time, and even those were annoying. I can't imagine how itchy yours must be. At least it's getting better though. Hopefully you can get out, and about a little bit soon. Don't push too hard though, you still have a lot of healing. :)

I truly have amazing friends that helped me get the kid to and from school, etc. I am not allowed to drive.
My stitches in my stomach are starting to itch so bad. I want to scratch, but I am scared to tear anything. It is kind of frustrating! All that matters is each day gets a little better! I'm eager to get out of the house though. Between 5 days in the hospital and not allowed to leave the house either...I'm kind of stir crazy. I need the hubby to charge my fitbit so I can put it back on and start tracking steps and working my way back up!

You're not a burden, you'd help any of those helping you if the situation was reversed, and knowing you you'd never see it as a burden. :) Just keep taking care of yourself, all anyone wants is to see you at full health. I'm sorry to hear about your husband's grandmother.

Thanks ladies, just happy to be home. The pain comes and goes. I try not to take too many pain meds. I will start trying to do some work from home on Thursday and work my way back up. I will have friends take care of me next couple days, come check on me. My hubby's grandmother died the night I got home and he needs to go out of town for the funeral. I feel kind of a burden on people right now :(

So glad you are home! I'm sorry you spent some extra time in the ICU, but it sounds like you are on your way to mending! Definitely take it easy and one day at a time!

Glad everything turned out ok! Aside from the complications, of course. :( The end result is that you're home, and healing, and that's what's important. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

That's a lot of staples, and I can't imagine the pain. At least the surgery is over, and before you know it, this will be behind you too.

Sounds like you ladies are doing fantastic! So proud of both of you. Keep up your routines and you will get where you want to be.
I am finally home from the hospital. I came home around lunch time yesterday, surgery was really early Wednesday morning. Had some small complications after surgery that kept me in the ICU for 4 days. Not how I had hoped things to turn out, but all that matters is I am home now and on the mend. I have 24 staples in my lower spine, and however many stitches in my abdomen from my belly button down about 3 inches. I have to get up and walk as much as I can, so I have my old lady walker. I won't lie, my body hurts, but it's a take it one day at a time now...and hope for the best in the end.

While down, I'm working on getting my steps up a few each day, making sure I stay hydrated and don't do things I am not supposed to mess up my surgery.

The staples come out on the 27th. From there I start PT and will hopefully be back on my way to be a walking training leader for my 3-day team and our 60 mile walk for breast cancer in November :)

I hope you're doing ok Chrimson, even if you can't see this post yet, I'm thinking of you. :)

Good luck on your goal Lady, you can do it!

I'm at 134 down from 141 from my last bulk phase. I want to go on another bulk phase when I get to 130-132 again as I still have a long way to go when it comes to forming a good muscle base.
This time I want to do it the right way though. There's "dirty bulking" that I did over winter where you just eat a surplus of calories of whatever. Then there's "clean/controlled bulking" which is much better for summer. Since women can't gain a lot of muscle really fast, having too high of a surplus adds more fat.
Eating 10%-20% of my daily energy expenditure, sticking to (a least mostly) clean foods, with sufficient protein will allow me to build a little muscle over the next few months without gaining a lot of fat with it, which would really kill my motivation, and probably take a toll on my self esteem. Over winter I gained about fifteen pounds in a few months, with a max of about four pounds of that being muscle. So yeah, it was noticeable, and despite being happy to be working on toning up, it was still a bit hard to deal with.
I just got an awesome shaker bottle, and got a $60 container of zero carb protein powder or half price so I'm so ready to get started lol. At this rate it'll be a week or two depending on if I wait until the 130lb or 132lb mark. :D The reason I chose zero carb protein powder isn't because I'm trying to go really low carb or anything, I just get enough carbs easily enough from my diet as is, lol.

Wow, that was a lot, but I felt some of what I'm working on might need to be expanded on, haha. I guess I also get really excited, and tend not to have many people to talk about it with.

Hanging in there. Can never get the water intake down. I actually met my first weight goal last week, so I was happy. Not sure how much I could have gained over the Easter holiday. I have a mini weight goal set for Memorial Day, so I am hoping to hit that as well.

thank you ladies!
I check into the hospital tomorrow morning at 5:30 AM, so less than 24 hours from now (CST time). I have a lot to do today, including picking my husband up from the airport at 10:00 PM tonight. I will also be assisting in our monthly and quarterly data push to our live website at work. So I will probably not sleep at all tonight, but I guess it doesn't matter since they will be putting me to sleep at the hospital anyway.

How is everyone doing with their spring goals? My goal is to get through this and PT and be able to start long distance walking again to start!

Yup, you have to love the amount of taxes the middle class has taken out of our paychecks. I was joking with my hubby last week, I told him, you know if I quit my job, I could get this surgery for free! He told me yeah, this is true, but would like be getting the best doctors and hospital if you were having it done free. He makes a valid point.

I might not be on spark for a few days since I am not exactly sure how long my hospital stay is and how long I will be dopey on pills. But I will keep everyone updated. I did post a blog with updates on my mom and the cancer over the weekend if any of you are interested.

My daughter is starting to show a lot of interested in fashion and design. She asks if she can flip through my in-style magazines and last night I introduced her to mod-cloth a vintage style clothing store online. It's cute to see her interested in dresses and such since she's always been about her tshirts and jeans. She's growing up too fast, can't believe she will be 15 in just a couple months.

My surgery is this coming Wednesday. I got all my pre-op work done yesterday. I also paid all the dang taxes I owed yesterday. Between the down payment on surgery and the 3900 I coughed up to uncle Same yesterday. I'm broke :(

Well yeah most people notice others, I just mean if anyone is just sitting around trying to make fun of people then to heck with that, lol.
I have trouble with fashion and clothing. Like supposedly it's ok to mix patterns, but I just can't wrap my head around it. Lol. You'd think a 24 year old would have less rigid clothing rules. I would love to people watch more for the sake of outfits, but it doesn't seem like anyone around cares. Too small of towns I suppose.
I guess it would help with drawing if I got better with creativity, well, and anatomy, but that's a whole different struggle, lol. At least you do have a creative outlet though, it's therapeutic. :)

Yeah I admit I am a people watcher...no matter where I am. I am usually looking at how a person carries themselves and their clothes, not their weight though. I've never been one to judge another based on weight. But I'm always looking for smiles, confidence and wonder, what was this person thinking when trying this on today. I don't know I've always looked at people for styles and color combinations, wondering if something will look good on me or if I could be brave enough to rock that outfit. I think I might have a thing for design, but I don't know how to unlock that side of me since I am very logical, being a programmer. I think the artsy side of me is why I am having so much fun selling Jamberry.

It gets easier to deal with the more you accept that no one is really paying attention. Most people at the beach are just enjoying the beach, and if anyone is there to just sit around and judge, well they don't deserve to have their opinion counted. Lol. It's all about what you're comfortable in though, and I certainly don't recommend trying to make yourself feel any less happy, comfortable, or confident either way.

Thanks ladies. I've just never been one to show a lot of skin, so I think a bikini is just a strange concept for me whether I had the body in the past or not. After I have this major surgery on the 8th, I probably wouldn't want to flaunt the new scars on my body either. I will have one on my abdomen and another right near my belly button. I'm so scared about the surgery, and the pain and blah that will come with it, but I look forward to the healing and being able to move normally again!

Yeah high protein, and high fiber meals are great for sustained energy, and great for appetite management. I calculated my carbs with the formulas on a sticky on the female bodybuilding forum on bodybuilding.com, and just going to try to stick with what I've got. After tracking awhile, and seeing how things end up, I'll figure out if I should alter it. Hopefully not too much because carbs are hard to avoid for me. lol

The bikini comp body will take some time as it'll take periods of bulking with a caloric surplus for the muscle gains, cycled with periods of leaning out the body fat that naturally tags along (plus the body fat I had/have to get rid of in the first place. Lol. I'm leaning for summer, then after another winter bulk this year I hope to be about where I plan to be as far as muscle. :)

Fyre you can rock a bikini anytime! Your body is an amazing machine, and you can love it at any size. I find keeping a positive body attitude helps me more since I want to do these things to keep it healthy. As opposed to changing it because of perceived flaws. You will reach your goals, and if you ever decide to wear a two piece just remember you earned that body, and if someone has a problem, they can go fart themselves. Lol

Yeah, this is a lower carb diet for sure, but most of the time I don't really feel that hungry because I'm eating so much protein. This diet gives you 2 days of different eating, to add in an extra carb. Not that much, but I get excited to eat oatmeal. HAHA. So far the workouts are good but really tough. I was not a fan of the day I had to do plyo and the leg day had some more plyo stuff. Today is my first real cardio day and I know I'll be drenched with sweat if I was already doing that on the day I did lower body!

You can do it- the bikini bod. I'm not sure I'll ever get there, but it would be nice!

Oh I bet you would get there in no time. At this point, after surgery when I am able to really get moving again, my first goal is a BMI under 30. Once I hit that goal...I will shoot for 25%, eventually I would be happy between 20-23% body fat. I've always been a curvy girl so I'm ok with few extra on that percent wise. I just want to be in the healthy range and feel good, I've never worn a bikini and probably never will, but I could rock a 1 piece! :)

Competition diets are rough, not sure if adding paleo makes it easier or harder, but if I remember right that's lower in carbs too, right? Best of luck, it's hard but definitely doable. I have a friend who wants to do physique competitions, and she's currently in the leaning phase. No carbs after two pm, and little before then.

I finally found the right way to sum up where I want to be body-wise. There's four different women figure competition types, and I'm going for the type of body in bikini level. Roughly 18% body fat instead of 15% or less, and not quite as much muscle as physique or fitness comps. Not that I'd compete, but I just want to look like I could, lol.

yeah I've tried the million small meals a day thing, it never works for me, I get too busy at work to remember and I go all day not eating...etc. I don't know if it's my bad metabolism, but I can eat breakfast and not be hungry again until 2-3PM. I try to eat before that though. I do breakfast then try to eat around noon, I do bring some small snacks for in between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner but I never tend to eat them lol.

I can't wait to do my workout dvds again. When I'm healed up from surgery and get the ok, we should do a challenge together...since we both love the beach body stuff!

I hear you! Luckily they are opening a Planet Fitness right across the street from where we live, and my husband actually signed up. It's not ready yet, so he says he will begin his working out when it does, which is probably the beginning of April. I don't care for working out at the gym, which is why I do my DVDs. He also said he wanted to eat like I was, although that really means maybe breakfast, but definitely dinners. This plan is eating 8 times a day and just for myself I pre-prepared 2 pounds of ground turkey and a bag of frozen chicken.

I'm sure you will do great...I've been slowly trying to convert to Paleo for over 6 months now, it's not easy when you live with a hubby who refuses to eat anything but junk food and meat. lol

Happy Weekend everyone! Thank goodness we are back into the 50's today and tomorrow. The snow should be gone very soon.

I am going to start 21 Day Fix Extreme on Monday and will also be embarking on the countdown to competition eating plan. Basically it's a high protein, low carb diet. I think for me, it's different than Atkins though, because it seems to be more paleo. Definitely a challenge though because I love my chocolate treats here and there and I can't really have anything in my coffee, which is difficult for me.

I've only ever been prescribed them once when I had a really bad, and really painful kidney infection. Even on a short term basis I didn't feel like doing anything when I took them. I can't imagine having to deal with it long term. And no worries about TMI subjects, I have a close group of friends, and we talk about everything body-related, lol.

March is being itself for us. We can still get some bad weather, but it's generally when things start warming up. So far a lot of 30 degree weather so I'm good with it. Snow's melting slowly so we're not getting a huge mess, and I can walk without being focused on how cold it is the whole time. :D

Thanks Almisse...always great responses.
The thing I look most forward too, is getting moving again and into a routine again, and being off of pain meds. They really do help pain, but man, they do a lot of other blah things to you, besides making you tired and less focused, they also cause issues with bowel movements (sorry probably TMI). I really want to get back into my long distance walking and bicycle again, I miss both very much.

We had another freeze and snow over night, so I am working from home today. Dallas is so bipolar with weather in March lol.

Lady - I find that even if I'm not being as mindful about calories as I should, it helps to keep on with exercise. Naturally it's easier to get one part in control again rather than too, but also because it's easier for me to go back to eating right than it is to get back to working out after being inactive. It's great that you're still working out when you can, which helps keep those healthy goals in mind even when it's harder to work on them. :)
And thanks, fortunately the bitterness is starting to leave so it's just the cold. Lol. It's going to be in the 30s for awhile after tomorrow, which is what I like to see for early March. :D

Fyre - Surgery is always scary I think, but it'll be a good thing when it's behind you. It's hard having to work on a healthy lifestyle when physical problems get in the way. At least they give you medication to help with the pain, and once the pain passes you'll just be happy, and feel great. :3 If you have a 1 liter bottle you can make something like this to help you be sure you're on track: http://jewelpie.com/wp-content/uploads/201
3/03/waterbottlemarkedwithtime5.jpg
I'm finally getting out of the habit of drinking water a lot at the end of the day because I didn't get enough during the day. Plus that just makes me pee a lot in the middle of the night, lol. Water absorbs better when you have a steadier intake.

Aimee - Sounds like a good challenge, and it's great that the challenge and group are motivating for you. This is the only group that I'm really involved in. I've posted in others, but some aren't that active, and others are just too big and you don't get that involved with individuals. It's a good thing though, I'd be too overwhelmed. Lol. And yeah, definitely no point in worrying about slips, and mistakes. Happens to all of us, and as long as you keep moving forward, you're still on top. :) Besides, beating yourself up makes you feel down and that can hinder things further. Staying positive keeps you motivated, and happy, and it keeps your mind healthy too.

great to hear from you!
We understand if you are busy with many groups. I pay special attention to the few I am leading, but then otherwise I pop in and out of other groups and welcome new members and look for the challenges, etc. So don't feel bad.

Today I really need to focus on water, I'm so dehydrated :(

Hi all, I haven't posted in a while and was stopping by to say hey...I did take a challenge with another group and it is challenging at least for me. I have been doing pretty good with my walking and tracking. Not that I haven't strayed but I'm not beating myself up for it now. I feel bad because I belong to so many groups and don't stop in on all of them. maybe I should get rid of some. Well gotta run have a great day

Be happy and make good choices!

so happy to hear from you ladies!
I miss your daily posts...yes I have no life right now hahaha.

Yeah mom is slowly finally on the mend, and I hope to have her here in TX in the next couple weeks, before I'm down from my own surgery!

I'm scared about surgery, but at the same time excited to think I might finally be able to move again without pain, and be healthy again with more physical activity! I just fear the actual after surgery pain and recovery. I've never had surgery other than my wisdom teeth removed. lol

Sorry I haven't been around the board much. We had the terrible icy/snow weather a few weeks ago, which took forever to melt. Sounds like we might get more Wed afternoon and night. Blah! My husband turned 30 on the 19th, so we had a quiet night at home and then last night we finally went out to dinner to celebrate. His grandfather passed away this past Friday. He was more like his father, so it has been difficult, but he was 93, so he lived a long life. Today we had to go and move his things out of his room, so I think that was difficult for him to face.

I've been working out a much as I can when I have the energy and have been doing pretty well. Food-wise, I know I can be doing better, so I need to get that back under control.

Thinking of your mom, Chrimson. I saw your blog post and it sounds like she is on the mend from her surgery, finally. It will be great for her to be around you once she starts her next level of treatment.

Great job on the working out Almisse, especially walking out in the bitter cold!

I hope your mom heals well, and quickly. She's been through enough, and deserves to be feeling better. It must be rough being so busy and everything yourself. Try to remember to take care of yourself too though.

As for icy roads, I don't think I'd trust anyone below the Mason-Dixon line with driving on those! Lol. I live where we're used to it, and half the people around here still end up in ditches. XD We've been getting more snow since yesterday, and it's getting aggravating. Jay and I are going on walks daily now, and I'd just like to not need two pairs of pants, two sweaters, a coat, gloves, scarf etc just to walk with wind destroying my face. I need spring.

This month I'm leaning out my body fat percentage so I need the daily cardio to help that along. Tracking cals in and out now, and still consistent with strength so I can't wait to start seeing more definition as I clear off the fat.

Sorry I've been MIA a couple days as well. Weather has us working from home because Dallas has iced over and you really do not want to be on the roads with these bad drivers on ice.

I've been super busy between trying to figure out when to get my mom to Texas, when she is table enough, when to schedule my back surgery, and then on top of all that I've started a small side business selling Jamberry and still working my full time job about 50 hours a week. I'm trying to use my early mornings to catch up on other things.

How is everyone doing? Is everyone sticking to their goals in February? My goals have changed since I am on limited movement these days.

Hope everyone had a nice Valentine's day and a nice weekend. Our pretty 70 degree weather over the weekend is gone, and replaced with 35 degree air temperature but with rain and wind it feels like 19. That's cold for us wusses down here in TX. I have a feeling today is not going to be a fun day on roads either.

I know it sounds scary but if you trust the doctor to know what she's doing, then try to relax over it. It sounds like it's something you really need to have done.

She explained the surgery part, even drew a diagram of what they need to do. Basically they need to go in from the front by my belly button, move my organs out of the way to get to my spin, but also go in from the back to my spine at the same time. They use a small retract device to lift the vertebrae apart, remove the little bit of remaining bad disk, put in a new fake disk, then screw rods into my L5-S1 vertebrae to stabilize, strengthen and hold that new disk into place.

I will have about a 4 inch scar on my lower spine and a 4-6 inch scar on my lower abdomen.

Have you talked to your doctor about our fears? Maybe he/she could explain things more so you wouldn't have so much fear. I've had surgery 3 times. No fun but I knew exactly what to expect.

I have to talk to work and see if they will even let me have the time off without letting me go :(
I would need to take the week of surgery off for sure, and then work from home the next week. Then the doctor said week 3 I could go back into the office but with a back brace on, since I just have a desk job and I don't lift anything.

I'm scared to have surgery. Other than oral surgery, I've never had any kind of surgery. At the point where I am and how much pain I have every day, I don't think the wounds would hurt any more than I already do, I think it's the whole you cannot do anything or lift anything thing for a month and then will need PT to learn how to move thing that scares me. Well that and the whole there is always possibility of something going wrong.

I do hope your Mom heals quickly and the pain eases. I also hope you won't have to put your own surgery off any longer than absolutely necessary. Waiting could mean making the situation worse. I hope and pray it won't. emoticon

Well I really hope the antibiotics continue to work and she is able to get her last drain out. Poor thing! And you! I hope that you are able to have your surgery soon, but that sounds so scary!

Mum was in the hospital with IV antibiotics for 3 days. She got to come home Saturday night. The pain is more than she can bear. My mum is one of the strongest women I know, and she's never in her life complained of pain, but when you're recovery from a mastectomy, lymph removal and a fractured vertebra, and now add a nasty infection on top of it, I think it's just too much. She does not get out of bed much and I feel so terrible that I am not with her right now.

On a lighter note, she did respond to antibiotics, she has didn't have to take an IV home, but will be on a high dose pill for awhile. She got one surgery drain removed, still waiting on the second one to come out, but it might take a little longer since the one that is still in was attached to the infection site. She will hopefully be with me here in TX in a few weeks to begin radiation and I will be able to help her and take care of her.

As for me, they want me to have surgery ASAP, but that includes being down for a few weeks and I feel like that is not an option right now. Even worse, I was hoping it would be something simple like my husband had done...nope, I need MAJOR surgery and it involves going in through my belly button and back at the same time to get to my spine.

Mum has a staph infection in the armpit where they removed the lymph nodes. Between that and the pain from her fractured spine, she is in a lot of pain, but they did let her come home Saturday night.
I am trying to be positive and be her cheerleader, but seeing her hurt so much is awful. I want her to heal and smile again. I miss my cheerful happy mum.

The hubby is doing better. He still has some congestion, but he is mostly over whatever he had.

Mom was re-admitted to the hospital yesterday and kept last night. Her fever spiked over night and my sister called her doctor. The doctor admitted her, it appears she me might be pre-sepsis based on her white blood cell count and the swelling of the infection site. Mom will be very upset to know she will probably not be going home today either :(

Sounds like a good site, I will check it out for sure!

My sister says mom is doing well, she does have a small infection where the tubes (drains) are coming out from under her arm because one was clogged, so they started her on antibiotics last night and will check on it again Friday.

I'm exhausted this week, work is kicking my butt. I haven't been doing my walking because of the back pain, but I've been getting small walks in when I can and it doesn't hurt too much, just not hitting my 10k steps right now, so I'm really trying to watch my eating.

Taking care of everyone no matter where you are. :D Glad your mom is doing well, and hope she continues to do so. Good luck not getting sick, it's hard to avoid when you're taking care of the one who is sick. Maybe take some Emergen-C or another immune system booster for the time being?

Sorry I haven't been on for a few days. My laptop's still not cooperating so I can still only get on when Jay's at work, and I'm at my dad's place. So if I disappear again I'm ok, lol.

I'm hoping to get my eating habits more under control. I was doing well until the weekend, but hey, the Superbowl only comes once a year. I need to up my cardio too, but I find it harder to get motivated for cardio. I've gained muscle, but if I want to start seeing it more, I have to burn some fat.
I started a profile on bodybuilding.com, and it's a pretty awesome site. You don't have to want to be a serious lifter, you can pick a body type ranging in body fat, and muscle based on your goals. Mine's "fit woman" which has me aiming for 132lbs which is right around where my body likes to be, and 16% body fat.

Thank you, the kind words are always welcome. Mum is doing well, so much better than any of expected. I swear the woman feels no pain, if she does she would never tell you she does!

I came home to a sick hubby, so I need to try and get him well today. As soon as the pain meds for my back kick in I will start cleaning, washing everything and disinfecting the house, I don't want to get sick. I'm still getting over a little something from before I went to AZ.

Glad to hear you did not get hit with too much bad weather. The weather was beautiful in Arizona as usual. We did get rain, people flying in were complaining, we fly to what they call the city of the sun and it's in the 50s and raining. Sorry it is such a terrible thing that AZ is actually getting some rain when they are always in a drought lol.

I flew back home today, I am sitting on my couch back in Irving, TX right now catching up on emails and such. My sister flew in today to take my place and spend a week with my mom, and she brought my 1 year old niece, that will really cheer her up! She really is doing fantastic. She is already going almost 10 hours between her pain pill, yet has stitches going from the center of her chest all the way to her rib cage under her armpit. She complained and whined until she got he way and the doctor let her go home Wednesday, only 36 hours after surgery. She does have drains (2) to clear ever few hours and keep track of how many cc of fluid is coming out, but I showed my sister how to do it. She even got out of the house for an hour yesterday and went to the grocery store with me because she wanted to get some "fresh air" and out of her jammies. haha.
She is remarkable in her strength. She was terrified going into surgery, having never been put under since she was 7 years old for her tonsils. But just like I promised her, i was there holding her hand when she was wheeled through the doors, and I was the first person she saw holding her hand when she opened her eyes in recovery. I can keep going on and on about how amazing she is, but I start blabbing, sorry about that. The good news from the surgeon yesterday, called her personally. The removed officially only 13 lymph nodes, and she is officially downgraded from stage 3B to a stage 2A. This is great news!

We ended up not getting much, but a friend in Boston said they got three or four feet. We were out of the way enough to just get a few inches.

Glad to hear your mom's surgery went well! I hope she heals well, and quickly. She's quite the strong, and amazing lady.
