I had Mary Corbet's "Little Lavender things" & didn't realize it CLAIRE. I didn't understand that I'd get them via the computer! There are plenty of enticing things to make, and her instructions & "how to" pictures are the most detailed I've seen. I plan to do the hedgehog scissor pull first. It looks like a fun long & short stitch example.

I'm enchanted with Thailand prayer flags, and am thinking of hanging some of the Lavender pieces as flags. I see needlework catalogs selling Xmas kits for pics to hang on a garland, so I could incorporate that idea in my flag garland == or Halloween, or etc.

I haven't ordered it yet, but definitely will. I'd love to hear what you think of it. I'm still doing her long and short stitch tutorial, and I think I finally get it.

I get Mary Corbett emails, and love her. Just sent for her little lavender patterns. Small projects suite me just now.

I'm using needlenthread.com, which is a blog by Mary Corbett in Kansas... or North Dakota. Somewhere in the big middle of the country; but I'm not sure exactly where.

I've had great luck with her tutorials. I'm doing her "long and short stitch" sampler now -- unfortunately I'm going to have to start over because my nicely shaded square looks more like a nicely shaded manta ray. Oh well. I'm using linen so I think I'll just be able to pull out the stitches and re-work it. We'll see.

I just got a book for the kind of embroidery in the picture on this forum. Will try a flower or 2 on the "Home Sweet Home" embroidered workbox I'm starting.
Claire, I'm teaching myself too. What blog are you learning from? I look up new stitches on the computer as I encounter them, but hav'nt found a teacher yet.

Hi Claire, welcome to the team. I love to embroider, and like you I am pretty much self taught. I' not a fancy work embroiderer, but love all the old fashioned motifs and usually work from them or else draw my own. I like colorful, vibrant colors and especially like Mexican themes.

Hi everyone, I'm Claire; I learned to embroider when I was about 13 -- but I put it down and didn't pick it up again seriously until quite recently. I'm learning slowly on my own, using instructional books and by following an instructional blog. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

MIRROR, MIRROR ( a poem to make you giggle)

Mirror mirror on the wall do you have to tell it all?
Where do you get the glaring light to make my clothes look just too tight?

I think I'm fine but I can see you won't cooperate with me.
The way you let the shadows play you'd think my hair was turning grey.

What's that you say, a double chin?
No that's the way the light comes in.
If you persist in peering so you'll confiscate my facial glow.

And then if you're not hanging straight you'll tell me next I'm gaining weight
I'm really quite upset with you for giving this distorted view.

I hate you being so smug and wise.
Oh look what's happened to my thighs!
I warn you now oh mirrored wall since we're not on speaking terms at all
If I look like this in my new jeans you'll find yourself in smitherines!

Hello folks, sorry I've been away for awhile. I've had some upsetting personal issues going on in my life that I allowed to derail me from my plan to diet and get healthier. I'm back now and want to apologise for being away so long.

I hope this winter has been a mild one for all of you. Here in western Pennsylvania we've had a very good winter right up until the beginning of March. Since then it's snowed every week. Tonight the weatherman is calling for another 5-7 inches of the white stuff. I'll be SO happy when Spring is truly here. I hate to go out in the ice and snow. I'm always afraid of falling down. And at my size and age I don't even want to think how that might turn out. Won't be pretty, that's for sure.

One nice thing about the winter months is that I do get to spend a lot of time stitching. I'm embroidering a set of 8 napkins for Thanksgiving with an old-fashioned turkey/pilgrim/indian/harvest theme. I have 4 done and 4 to go. I designed them myself from drawings I found from the 1950's on the internet. I really like them--if I do say so myself! :) I hope I get them all done in time for Thanksgiving this year.

What are you all working on right now?

hugs--Georgia

A very cold day here in western Pennsylvania. 12 degrees outside with a wind chill of only 3! Brrrr that's too cold for this old gal.

Hope you are all keeping warm and happy wherever you may be as well.

Janey, I need to bump up my exercise too. I really do enjoy the zumba gold chair dancing I do, but sure wish I could do it from a standing position instead of a seated one. Maybe soon though. My bad knees, and of course all this weight I have just won't allow it for now. My goals are to lose enough by my birthday in June to be able to do just that.

Your christmas pillows sound pretty. I love anything Christmas themed. It just makes you feel cheery inside to work on them :)

I've been stitching at night while my hubby watches his shows on TV. We don't like to watch the same thing most of the time, so while he's doing that I either read, stitch, or work/play on the computer. I enjoy coming here to SP and catching up on all the news with friends and my teams, and I also like to play word games on FB or other sites. I'm addicted to words with friends! lol

Have a great day, folks :)

hugs--Georgia

Kim, that was really thoughtful of your son to get you that for Christmas. What kind of cross stitch pattern is it? I've never done much cross stitching, but some I've seen are really beautiful. I like to sit and stitch while I'm watching TV too. And I sure do agree with you that it makes you feel a real sense of accomplishment to get a project started--and even better when it's done, however, I'm infamous for having lots and lots of unfinished embroidery projects stuffed away all over the house! lol

Janey, good job on losing that weight! Sounds like you're off to a great start for the year. What kind of meal and exercise plan are you on? I try and stay below 1500 calories daily. My goal is t lose 10 pounds this month. Are you doing any kind of stitching project at the moment? I'm still working some Mexican-style embroidery on a new housedress I bought for myself last summer. I hope to have it done by this next summer.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, and the upcoming week will be even better yet!

Rhyme time is a flimsey [ a quilt top no batting or backing]
Now I press and cut backing to soize then add border to both
[a border is needed so the wave binding does not take away from the quilt blocks}
then i well sew the label on the backing and sandwich the three layers.
Any way I'd like to work on this un-interuppted
My computer crashed and i am leaving it be until after i get a bfew things finished

all are digitized fabric stabilized and ready to stitch.
I chose a postage stamp frame and tinkertoy font the same as the Rhyme poems
are digitized
I am still shaking my head about how NOT PC those rhymes are.
blocks stitched on Kaufman kona fusions Ivory
backing will be fusions sage!
Only a basic quilt top unless i find an easier way to join the 30 blocks

VJH-W65, you sure sound busy! Your projects sound beautiful, and I wish you the best of luck in starting your business.

I've not been embroidering much, but, as the winter progresses I know I'll find more time to just sit and sew. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I STILL have unfinished projects laying around here and there. I honestly am absolutely not going to start any new ones until these are all finished up. My daughter painted her kitchen 2 years ago and I still haven't given her all the tea towels I embroidered for her...lol...soon she'll be painting again, and let's just pray she doesn't change her coffee cup themed kitchen, or I'll be in trouble...lol

Hope everyone here is doing well. Hope your Christmas will be merry and bright.

hugs---Georgia

When I sent Frances 'baby' Houseman to the spa,
I also sent a note "I am looking for another Babylock Ellure as a biz back-up machine "
He called yesterday a used Ellure ESL
newer model than my current babylock ellure
I pick up 'Johnny' Castle today
However I will never put Baby in a corner,
I have enough work to keep both machines busy

Quilts coming along
ABC fabric baby quilt has an embroidered label that has a

So cool to customize the label
100 years from now that quilt will have the Providence stitched there

Digitized a quilt label for Jonathans train quilt
I made for his wee legs on his day of steam and diesel train rides
A lady tried to buy the quilt offering 25 dollars
That would not but one side of the quilt
Made with designer fabrics.

Good morning Embroiderers!

Can you believe it is August already? School will soon be starting back, but thank goodness I don't have a child in school to worry about. I just have to be aware of the increased traffic on my way to work. emoticon

Does anyone watch the Olympics? I like the gymnastics, but that is about it. I did set a challenge for myself to try to finish my Haunted House piece I'm currently working on by the time the Olympics are done. Probably won't happen, but hopefully I will get a lot done on it.

I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday!

emoticon emoticon emoticon Good morning!

Another sunny and hot day on tap for us here in Mississippi. Today is my Friday because I am off tomorrow. Woo hoo! I'm planning on going out to a new walking trail the city made in our park early in the morning. It winds through some woods and around a little pond, and I'm actually looking forward to walking it.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Exercise is one of the hardest things for me. Most of my life is spent sitting down - all day at the office and all evening at home when I'm stitching or on the computer. It is pretty overwhelming to me sometimes to make myself do something I rarely do, get up and move. Plus it means I have to give up some of my beloved stitching time. I found this motivating thought on the internet, and I thought I would share it.

"I’ll Feel Better Once I Get Started - The hardest part of working out is usually getting started. Sometimes the idea of going from sitting or sleeping to jumping up and down and sweating is so overwhelming, we can't imagine bridging that gap.

This is the time to remind yourself that you'll feel better once you start moving. There may be some discomfort at first as you get your heart rate up but, that initial discomfort fades as your body warms, your temperature rises and blood flows into your muscles. When the endorphins kick in, you'll feel even better and, at the end of the workout, you'll get more satisfaction because you worked out even though it was hard."

I hope you all have a wonderful Thursday!

Hugs,
Lisa

Dwelling in guilt is like living your life with an anchor tied to your ankles dragging you down.

Giving ourselves permission to feel at peace with our past actions is one of the most positive steps we can take toward living a life free from regrets, disappointments, and guilt. The more we are able to remind ourselves that the true path to a peaceful mind and heart is through acceptance of every part of our lives and actions, the more harmony and inner joy we will experience in all aspects of our lives.

Hi:

How is everyone?
I know I have been MIA --lots going on. We saved our house again from the sheriff's sale confirmation...that took from Feb-April. I have been under so much stress I cannot even begin to tell ya.

I started crocheting before Christmas and have been working on a few things. I still am working on a blanket. I switched over to embroidering this week again for something different and am trying to use up some of my stray dmc floss. I think I can do it. The project came with that yarn thread and I hate that stuff so I am using the dmc floss instead.

How are you?
I am ready for spring and enjoy looking outside and seeing green grass again (I'm in WI).
It's about time to til up the garden and think about veggies :)

craftingly yours,
sandra

I use the term surface embroidery for non-counted stitching on fabric, using stitches like outline, stem, satin, chain, etc., that isn't referred to by another name such as crewel or stumpwork. It is also referred to as free style embroidery.

I enjoy stitching on all kinds of fabric, from denim to linen to silk. I also love to use a wide variety of threads. DMC cotton floss is the easiest for me to get my hands on, but I love silk threads and blends such as Caron threads, and wool threads. If my fabric is not heavy enough to support the threads I want to use, I will back it with a light or medium weight muslin.

This is actually the very first kind of stitching I did, when I was about 10 or 11. I used iron on transfers and stitched on my blue jeans with cotton floss. My friends loved my jeans, and were soon bringing me their jeans to stitch on too.

Do you enjoy surface embroidery? I would love to hear about your experiences with it.

Good morning!

February is National Embroidery Month in the U.S. I would like to celebrate our art and craft with you guys here during the month. I thought I would share a little each day about my favorite embroidery techniques and some of my favorite resources. I hope you guys will share about your favorite techniques and resources too.

Cross stitching is one of the techniques I enjoy. From what I have seen, I think it is the most popular and widespread embroidery technique too. Cross stitching can be traced way back in history, with an early example of cross stitch being found in an Egyptian tomb on a piece of clothing.

My first experience with cross stitch was a stamped design on a pillow case, way back in my pre-teen years. Then I discovered counted cross stitch, and my first piece of that was a barrel racing horse worked on Aida. Now I prefer to cross stitch on linen. And I love all the different designs that are out there! I have several cross stitch pieces that I am actively working on now. When I get home, I will post a couple of photos of them.

So how about you guys? Do you enjoy cross stitching?

Happy Wednesday!

Good morning all! I'm easing myself back on to the healthy path that I keep falling off of. emoticon I just don't understand why I can't make the shift to a healthy lifestyle. Oh well, try try again.

I have been stitching too much because it has crowded out my exercise time. Got to make room for movement of things other than my needle! LOL

Georgia, I'm glad you are doing well. Thank you so much for checking on me and thinking about me! You are such a great friend!

I think I hear an echo in here :)

If anyone is reading this, I hope you're having a wonderful day and finding time to both stitch and eat well.

I'm doing well myself. Still tracking my food and doing my exercises. The pounds are coming off slow but sure. I'm happy with that.

love to all-----Georgia

Howdy stitchers :)

I've been doing well on my eating and exercise and feel like I'm really getting back into the swing of things. I've lost 15 pounds since Dec 27th when I re-started my diet. I'm aiming for at least 2 pounds a week, and hope to soon be back to where I was when I left off in October.

I've also started a new embroidery project, which is a little odd for me as I usually just try and finish up some of the older ones I have laying about, but this time I felt like starting something new, so I'm working on embroidering the pockets and neckline of a "big" shirt I have. I bought it last year as a cover-up type thing. I like it a lot, but it was very plain--all white, and I do like to glitz things up :)

Hope everyone is doing well..Would love to hear from some of you out there--please just drop a line and say hello :)

Lisa--I miss you!!!!! A LOT! Whatever is going on in your world, please know that I'm thinking of you with lots of love and wishing you al the best.

Whoaaa Stitchers, we had our first winter storm here in western Pa, and it was a doozy! Snow and some really cold weather. Temps were below zero this morning. I stayed in bed as long as I could and when I finally dragged myself out of that warm bed, I could see my breathe in the air in our bedroom! Now that's cold! DH doesn't like the heat turned up in our bedroom too much, and normally neither do I, but that was a little too cold for even me...couldn't wait until I could scurry out of there and cuddle up next to the wood stove. I stayed there as much as I could all day yesterday, last night and today..lol.

I'm such a baby.

Hope all of you are staying warm and busy. Lisa, I miss you girl! Seems like forever since we've talked. Hope all is well.

hugs--
Georgia

Happy New Year, folks!

I'm on day 7 of tracking my food, and I have to say that I feel so much better both physically and mentally. I'm a littler bummed because of gaining some of the old weight back, but am not going to let it defeat me. Sometimes you have to fight a battle more than once to win it.

I hope everyone is doing well and keeping warm and happy. Keep on stitching!!

Hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays and time spent with family and friends. I had a really wonderful Christmas and am looking forward with renewed hope for the new year ahead. I have a lot of ground to cover to get back to my former weight, and since I've regained some of what I had formerly lost, it is a little depressing to think of doing all that over again, but I'm determined to just push on through it and eventually I'll b e back where I started from. Hope i can learn from my mistakes and this time around I won't fall off the wagon as easily. I started tracking my food again yesterday, and that alone will be a major help in keeping me on the straight and narrow.

I have my grandkids today and am really looking forward to spending the day with them.

Hope you're all getting some fun stitching time in!
love--

Sandra, you're sure right about the crazy part! lol....I feel so frazzled with all the upcoming festivities this month that i'm ready to pull my hair out. I never do well under pressure. I love Christmas, but have to admit I'm always a bit relieved when its over. I know. I've a bit of Scrooge in me! lol
Your towel rings sound so pretty--I have a towel like that hanging from my stove right now. They make excellent gifts and everyone loves them. Are yours Christmas-themed?
I'm still working on my embroidery. I'll have more time to do it after the Holidays. It really does have a calming effect. Good luck in the job hunting--that's never easy. My youngest son does landscaping work and then has to find another job every winter to tide him over the cold months...it's always hard--especially in this economy.

Lisa--I read in another team we are on that your DH is having health troubles---I'll be saying prayers to the powers that be for his recovery and for the strength for you to cope with these new worries.

I'm starting another weight-loss 10 week challenge on another team, and I am SO looking forward to losing some of the weight I had re-gained over the Fall months. I sure wish I would get myself off this crazy diet roller coaster I'm on!

Love to all---Georgia

Here's to a better 2012. I am tired of job hunting and need to find a job asap. :)

I started crocheting a few towel rings (it's sort of like a towel topper) and have made a bunch of them and will continue as I am going to give some as gifts.

I too always have some kind of project started. I need to focus on getting a few more done.

Good group, it's okay if it's quiet.
People have lives...and holidays make some crazy.

Our little team here feels so neglected, and I'm truly sorry for that because a nicer group of folk would be hard to find--no matter how small we are.

It also feels as if this year has been tough on many of us, and am hoping that the upcoming one will smile on us all.

I have LOTS of stitching going on at the moment. I always work like crazy this time of year to finish embroidered gifts for friends and family. Doesn't always happen in time, but I do try.

Hope everyone is gearing up for a happy Christmas--I do love this time of year so much.

Hello everyone!

Merry Christmas --if I forget to post again before then.
I have to get back to working on some crafts. I sort of stopped for a couple of weeks. I did make some Christmas cards.

Life always seems so overwhelming. Money is always an issue here. If only I could find a job that I enjoyed that would pay me enough to live. I just haven't found anything.

I'll chat again another day.
have a great weekend

Hi everyone -

Life has gotten rather overwhelming here lately, and I must confess I did my turtle thing, where I pull my head inside my shell and hermit.

Sandra, The Complete Book of Stumpwork is awesome! You should definitely try to get it again.

I have been working on little felt Christmas trees for the little gift at our office Christmas party. I have to make 40 of them, and I have 28 done. I'm beading them, and they are actually fun to make. I will have to get a picture posted. emoticon

Have a great Monday!

Sandra, it was called, I believe, the Complete Book of Stumpwork.. I still want it..

How is everyone doing? Where are you guys? It's not the holidays, yet?? Maybe, you are working on an intense embrodiery project and just can't look up... ? :-)

Hi Sandra :)
What kind of book was it?

My mom's been gone since 1985. She taught me how to embroider. I love to do it and I guess I forgot she taught me until my Aunt asked me how did I learn how to do it.

Here's my show n tell link to see what I've been working on. I have a few quilt projects started on my dining room table. Maybe I'll have someone carry my sewing machine downstairs so I can work on that this week. I've been so busy looking for a job, trying to find money, and saving my house this year that I feel ragged. Crafts are my escape. I have a few things started right now.

I don't seem to have time in summer for SP. I'm too busy enjoying the summer while it's here. Fall is all around me....67 days til Christmas. I am going to try to make some towel ring toppers. I'm not good at crocheting, but I'm going to try to make some of these as gifts. I'll share the link here too....

Hi, Lisa.. et al. I am soo jealous! How was the class? I never received that book I ordered. It got lost in the mail.. :-( The seller reimbursed me for it. I never re-ordered. maybe I should. What's going on with everyone? I don't see alot of activity in this team.. I'm getting back to doing SP.. My mother passed away 5 years ago, yesterday. I am trying to honor her memory by trying again. She's the one that taught me how to embroidery..

Hi everyone -

Just stopping in to say hi! I went to the Embroidery Guild's national seminar last month, and had a wonderful time. I took a stumpwork class with Jane Nicholas, who is from Australia. She is a delightful teacher!

I'm enjoying our wonderful fall weather. It is beautiful and sunshiny, with just a little nip in the air in the mornings.

Have a great Friday!

Hugs,
Lisa

Stopping by to say hello.

We worked out a deal with our mtg company--now our payments will be $500 a month. A sure cry from $2100 which they wanted this summer. Now if we had $500 to pay them...my "other" co-parent works parttime at Walmart and thinks that's enough. He's about to have worked 60 days at this job. (That means he's worked about 70 days this year.) I got fired, but it's a good thing as I hated that job. I have an unemployment hearing next week...I hope I win it as we really need the money. Been looking hard to find another job but coming up blanks.

I like to do my stitching in front of the tv. We had to shut off our cable, so we've been watching movies lately. It's just not the same. I miss TV. I have a few projects started that I am working on finishing. I'm embroidering these months of the year pictures and then I'll make them all into a quilt sampler when I am finished. I'll stitch December tonight.

I got a serger for my birthday in August. It's nice to put a seam on things so they don't ravel. Someone gave me a bunch of upholstery samples and I am planning on stitching them into a quilt for my bed. I have started this but seem so preoccupied with other things right now. I'll work on that again later this week, maybe later next week.

On Tuesday I'm planning on going to Chicago to the Rosie show. I got tickets. It should be fun as I've never been to a taping of a tv show before.

blessings to you all

Cooler weather coming my way--time to get the wood stove fired up, rocking chair pulled up to it, and my work basket close at hand...it's stitching time!!!!

Hi fellow stitchers!

Sandra--good to hear from you! I've been 'away" myself for a few weeks, and so have a lot of catching up to do, but it's sure nice to see you posting again. You were missed. Are you still moving--or have you decided to stay put for awhile? Hope things are looking up for you since last time you posted...the surger is a great gift to get, and will sure cut down on sewing time!

I'm still working on old projects, but am thinking about starting another table runner for Christmas. It's been awhile since I made one, and I'd really like to embroider one with an old-fashioned theme..perhaps bells and candles...

Lisa--are you working on anything right now?

It's good to be back--I've missed everyone here.

love to all---Georgia

Hi everyone:

Haven't posted in forever, sorry :)
Been busy.
Haven't moved yet. Now looking for a job.
I have been embroidering a few things. I have a couple of them that are about to be finished all at once.

I'm getting a serger for my birthday this weekend, so I will probably do some sewing.

Hi folks, I know summertime is not usually the time we stay indoors stitching, but do hope that you've found a few spare moments to work on any of your projects you may have going on. I'm as guilty as anyone for not devoting the time I promised myself I'd set aside for my stitching. I used to do it in the evenings at least, while DH watched one of his novellas (spanish soap opera), but lately, I've found myself more & more online as I try to catch up with all my spark teams and online friends here at SP. I enjoy sparking--and it really helps keep me focused and involved with my weight loss program, but I do miss those quiet eveninge I spent stitching too. Ah well, those long, cold winter evenings will be on us in no time at all, sadly. I know I'll have lots of time then!

Hope everyone is enjoying these beautiful days, and are doing well with any meal and exercise plans you might be on. Lisa--I know you're doing well, Can't wait to begin our Fall BL Challenge. I did great in the Spring one, not so great in this summer one--am holding out high hopes for the Fall one!

hugs-
Georgia

We had about 140 people taking classes, with almost 170 at our banquet (which includes teachers, volunteers, and a few husbands). We had 9 classes, from counted work to crewel to my mixed media to beading. If you want to look at the brochure which has pictures of the classes, you can find it here: www.egatvr.com/SAS-PDFs/SASXXXI-clas

My class was called the Red Window. I will get a picture uploaded by this weekend.

I looked on EGA's website, and there are lots of chapters in Pennsylvania. Check out this link and see if one is close to you www.egausa.org/scripts/phpDealerLoca

We had our national seminar in Pittsburg two years ago. I didn't get to go to that one though.

I'm glad you had a great day yesterday. I hope today is going great for you too!

And hello to everyone else out there!

Lisa
