As I just posted on another board, I am back to the fold once again, hoping THIS TIME (sound familiar, anyone) to make it a LIFESTYLE change, laughing.
Ah well...The day after Thanksgiving was Day 1, and have managed, against all odds, to drop 10 lbs doing extended Induction (Atkins) with a ketogenic twist to try to keep the fat high (70-75%) protein moderate (20-30%) and carbs minimal at 20--25 g daily (5%).
This has had WONDERFUL effects on hunger (none) and weight loss (some) after 3 mos earlier this year of fighting for a 3-5 weight loss over the same 3 mo period.
The impetus for trying this was reading several new books (for me) written by Gary Taubes' "Why We Get Fat" (essentially extolling No Sugar, No Starch) and Volek & Phinney's "Art & Science of Low Carb Living" & realizing that 1400-1800 calories, low carb and LOTS of exercise didn't net me much of anything but depression.
Having modified my diet I can lay claim to purple ketone sticks AND significant weight loss at last. Who knew that by increasing the fat would naturally drop the calories? and hasten the weight loss? Oh, and I feel GREAT...sleep better and have more energy.
The cauliflower-crusted pizza (of Wheat belly fame) managed to satisfy the cravings this past week.
And who can complain eating Atkins' steak au poivre???
Okay, so my goal is to drop 61 pounds (51 left) in the next two years, and maintain a svelte and vigorous 200 lbs at age 65! After that, who knows...maybe take up flying? since I'll be so light on my feet!
Good tidings, All.
M'sanct

Slada, have you looked at Linda's Low Carb Menus and Recipes aat www.genaw.com/lowcarb/induction_menu
s/
induction_menus.html
? She has a whole bunch of low carb recipes, including some low carb menus, including for Induction. I think I was on Induction for about a month when I started at over 300 pounds. Now I go back on Induction for a week or two at a time when I need to clean my eating back up again.

Carollee, it sounds like you have Induction Flu. It happens to a lot of people when they start eating low carb. It's because your body has to change over from using sugar for fuel to using fat for fuel. It usually lasts anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. If you can manage to get through it at 20 carbs (that's net carbs, after subracting fiber), then I suggest you do so. If not, going higher and then gradually lowering it might work. What seems to be at least as important as how many carbs is what kind. Avoid the "bad" stuff - anything with sugar in any form (honey, molasses, sugar, fructose, dextrose, anything-ose) and grain in any form at all. We usually tell people who need to increase their calories to increase their fat. Is that something you can do with your gastric sleeve? Maybe eat fattier cuts of meat? Or cream in your coffee? Scramble or fry your eggs in butter or bacon grease? If you need to increase your carbs, do it with higher carb veggies like butternut squash or other winter squash, or sweet potatoes, both of which are nutritious and tend not to cause insulin spikes. You could also look into Paleo or Primal diets, which are similar to the Atkins type in that they eliminate sugar, grain and legumes, but because of problems specific to those foods rather than just because they have carbs. A lot of their recipes and menus are low carb, though many are higher than Induction levels.

Hope something here helps both of you!

I also have a gastric sleeve which means I can only eat 2.5 ounces of food at a time and it has to be mostly protein. So I am wondering if that is why induction is so hard for me--because if I try to eat at an induction style I only can mange about 900 calories.

Our Doctors tell us to keep carbs low, less than 50 but when I tried to cut down to less than 20 I ended up getting really foggy headaches and nausea.

The best compromise I can do is to go back up on the carbs (so I can function) then start decreasing Anybody got any ideas? emoticon

Slada, I don't understand it, either. How can we eat lots of fat and still lose weight? They explain it in the Atkins books and all the other low carb books and the Paleo books and the Primal books (they're similar to low carb but with a different focus) and I can recite the words but I don't really deep down understand it.

What I do understand, though, is that it does work. At least it works for me. And it works for a lot of other people on these Atkins teams. So what I have done is just accepted it. When I eat very few carbs and lots of healthy fats, I lose weight and my blood sugar goes down and my bad cholesterol and triglycerides go down and my good cholesterol goes up and my blood pressure goes down. And I like those results. So it's worth it to me to go ahead and eat this way even if I don't understand it.

Why don't you try just doing it for a month even if you don't understand it? Do it just like the book says. Eat very few carbs, and only the kind that Atkins allows. And eat lots of good fats, and moderate amounts of protein. Do it for a month, and see what happens. If it doesn't work for you, then try something else. But if it does work, then stick with it even if you don't understand it.

Atkins have great ideas but I don't like because of fat.If something have low carb it is high in fat so what do you say about?
I bought 2 books and all are the same, introduction is very hard because you can eat 20 carbs a day and lot of fat........I don't get it,do you?

Many hugs from Canada emoticon

Atkins is 20gms of net carbs a day during induction.

What you can eat depends on your plan. I love eggs but on Atkins you could also have some sausage, bacon, ham, other meat, cheese. Think outside the box. You can eat anything for breakfast - including leftover meat.

I am fairly new to low carb eating. I am doing a plan that is local to my area and is run by a nurse. We weigh in on Tuesdays. the first week the nurse gave me a list of foods I could eat. I ate from that list for about a month...the first week I lost 10 pounds! needless to say I was estatic!! the next three weeks I lost 9 more. I have lost a total of 27 pounds since April doing this program. Now the nurse adds foods each week that I can eat or gives me a recipe Or meal idea I can use. I don't know much about Atkins...don't know how many carbs you are allowed on Atkins. I try to stay under 35 calories each day...some days I get in the 20's...other days I get over 35....But I have been successful so I am happy.

I eat eggs most morning and am getting tired of them...I'm have tried them every way imaginable!! I would appreciate any breakfast suggestions that you may have.

hi everyone, i am kind of new at this low carb thing however i have read the atkins books the latest two to be exact and so far i love it i mean at first it was a lil difficult i had headaches and the blahs, but after the first week all gone, but i think i got the hang of it now i eat all the time mini meals and snacks to keep me going strong i also make my own low-carb bread, cookies and cake. i try to stay away from redmeat except on special occasions, i always plan ahead for my veggie carbs the rest is best.
i refuse to get on the scale, for some reason it is all over the place up and down allaround, its enough to make you scream.. so i only weigh on the first of the month and it is always an improvement that is unless i notice a change in my clothing i will get on at that point to see whats up. but its all good hang in there it gets easier.

I don't even like to weight in weekly. I don't trust my bath scales not to be off by a pound or two. Daily weigh ins drive me crazy. Too much change from day to day. My plan for me is weighing at the first of the month at the gym. It is a scale like what is in the dr. office. I can count on a negative number if I weigh once a month.

Everything thing you do helps, so being absolutely perfect doesn't have to be every day. Think of all the different things you are doing for your health everyday. Like, I am perfect with my water. It took a while to get there. I added low carb eating, and working toward perfection on that. Some days are good, some are bad, but the bad days when I make the wrong choices, are getting fewer. They will continue to be fewer and fewer bad days. All this just takes practice and more practice as well as the right mind set.

This rant is for me, but maybe you can use some of it for you.

MiRanda.

My stomach will NEVER be flat again either, after 4 kids...... and old age besides. I've given up on that. What I'm working for is a waistline of less than 35" - that should put me in decent shape, or so they say - they say your waist should be less than 35......... I think I can do it, but it's going to take some time.

I'm not going to have access to a scale for about 3 weeks. I'm so excited - maybe I can break the habit. AND, I'm NOT taking any baggy clothes with me either, so I'll have to stay on program so I'll have clothes to wear.... I refuse to buy any new until I can buy smaller!! (I think I will take my tape measure with me though). And I'll be doing a lot of walking while I'm gone as well - at least twice a day on a walk with the dog, then plus whatever other walking I might do. And about 5 days walking at the beach as well, so... I should be good!!

I went last year and didn't gain anything. I'm thankful that my DD is a healthy cook (she practices what I preached) LOL. (Not what I did).

emoticon NANCIE, you and i are in the same boat, emoticon only my tummy will probably never be the same again emoticon ya just can't lose/gain/lose over and over for 40 yrs and think it will ever be flat and tight again. I still like my carbs and seem to sleep better if i have some b4 bed, the fat/protein doesn't do it for me. Just being honest. Anyone else feel the same ? Last night i caved and ate a piece of the homemade bread i made, my dh kept saying how good it was. Then about 11:30 i couldn't stand it anylonger (hungry) so i had a 1/2 of a roll with peanut butter/butter spread . So trying to only have veggie carbs today.

LINDA, i don't think we can change the day, it's just to give us a "start again" icon. You have to go back and put "day 2" and so on where you have the emoticon to keep track.

ewefluffy.. I have been doing the same thing (weighing daily).. then I manage to miss a day or two and am so proud. lol It's such an unhealthy habit. At least I haven't been getting totally discouraged to see the yo-yo thing going on (147-151...blech).. Because I can continually see that my belly is getting smaller! emoticon

Just need to keep at it, and pray that this is the right plan for me. I get so fearful it's not going to work, because this is as low as I made it last year when I switched to a low carb lifestyle.

Yes it is time to get back down to serious business!! I went back on my program on 12/26 and have done 'alright' - the scale isn't showing much tho. Think I'm going to put the scale away for a week or so to start with anyhow. I think my disposition would be better...

I used to only weigh once a week, then somehow got back into this weighing every day and sometimes, I have to say, it does me in!

The Atkins website has a free "Quick Start Guide" that they will mail you. It has all the information that you will need and it is small enough to put in your purse or daily planner.

I love the Atkins lifestyle, and am not at the point where I am creating alot of low-carb recipes, like patty-melts and tator-tot casserole! I love cheese, and also make grilled cheese, low-carb version of course!

Can you eat cheese and if so which kind and how much?

All of this is so contrary to the way I have eaten for years, but whatever I have done hasn't been working for a long time so it is time to try something different.

Garyedwin: you can find lots of low carb info. and recipes on the net. Do a google on low carb. On this site look in the recipe room. Also, a good site that I love is:
www.lowcarbfriends.com

Hope this helps. I'm new to this team but not to lowcarbing. :o)

It's easy to distract fat people. It's a piece of cake.

I enjoy using the comedy technique of self-deprecation - but I'm not very good at it.
