To me, clean eating means to eat fruits and vegetables in as close to their natural state as possible without creams and sauces. I have been eating alot more fruits and vegetables every day now and notice a difference in my energy levels. I think it must have to do with eating more of these foods prepared in a more natural state.

Hello! I'm just starting out with clean eating and was wondering what oil is best to use. I've been trying to only eat what I can make, bake, grow (or catch i.e. fish) I am a vegetarian/pescatarian but am really interested in learning more about total clean eating.

I don't use butter and quit using spray "Pam". I had tried weight watchers and they recommended the sprays but they never felt right!
I eat TONS of beans and legumes, fruit, vegetables and minimal unprocessed cheese, lots of soy....am I on the right path?

The oils are what's throwing me for when I grill my fish....any help would be appreciated!!

The alcohol is going to be my biggest challenge. I love a glass of red wine with dinner!!!

I guess I break the rule for breakfast and just have a muffin, then a couple hours later yogurt, couple hours later lunch, then a snack, then dinner, and then another snack..boy I sure eat a lot!! ::)) But I find it is working, the smaller meals spaced out during the day, I don't feel deprived! I'll keep in mind the protein/carb(good) combination..

In a nut shell Clean eating is eating fruits, vegtables, lean meats, whole grains, and no processed foods. No chemicals. Cooking your own foods instead of buying packaged is so much better for you. Read labels and start eating healthier! (I love it!)
In Tosca Reno's book "The Eat Clean Diet", she has this list---
Clean Eating Principles:

1) 5 or 6 small meals every day. (more snack size rather than big meals)
2) Eat every two to 3 hours (to keep the metabolism burning! Like putting wood on a fire!)
3) Combine lean protein and complex carbs at every meal.
4) Drink at least 2 liters, or 8 cups of water a day.
5) Never miss a meal, especially breakfast
6) Carry a cooler loaded with clean eat foods to get you through the day.
7) Avoid all over-processed, refined foods, especially white flour and sugar.
8) Avoid saturated and trans fats
9) Avoid sugar loaded colas and juices.
10) Consume adequate healthy fats (EFAs) each day.
11) Avoid achohol- another form of sugar
12) Avoid all calorie-dense foods that contain little or no nutritional value.
13) Depend on Fresh fruits and Vegetables for fiber, vitamins and enzymes.
14) Stick to proper portion sizes- give up the super-sizing!

I am fairly new to this team and Toscas version of eating clean too.

I would say of course the easiest way to have a 'list' would be to get any of her books.

You can get the magazine Clean Eating for tips. But the main thing to do is read lables.

As for what's clean or what isn't, I just think of what Jack LaLanne used to say, "If man made it, don't eat it."

To me that means, if it has ingredients that don't grow naturally on the earth.

Tosca says it's best not to eat ground beef because it usually has too much fat.

I am lucky to have lean grass fed beef at my disposal. That makes me happy because I am not a fan of her choice, bison :)

If you have further questions that I might help with, feel free to email me.

I'm new here, too, and so happy to be here!

Oxygen is hard to find on the newstands--check in w/ the muscle & fitness & bodybuilding magazines. Otherwise a larger bookstore will have it.

I subscribed to Clean Eating magazine--every month has weeks/months worth of eating plans.

Hi -

I am new to this board as well. I just subscribed to the Eating Clean magazine, and bought the eating clean diet book. Read 33% so far and love it. Curiously enough, i don't think that what she suggest is that far from what i try to eat, chocolate and sweets set aside LOL. So, i am willing to give it a real try! I am also going through previous posts, to get up to speed. Everyone seems to love Oxygen magazine. How come - never seen one in the stores???

Thanks, and excited to be part of the eating clean clan, yuliaj

I'm right with you on coffeemate. One of the ingredients in many of their varieties is Caseinate (sodium or calcium), which is one way they hide MSG. That's just bad stuff.

Butter on the other hand is a natural product. It's margarine (used to be called Oleo) that adds color to mimic butter's color. It's butter that's the real deal. In the U.S. butter must contain at least 80% butter fat with the remainder made up of water and milk solids. The quality of butter is rated by the USDA based on flavor, aroma, quality of cream, texture and then given a “Grade Shield” – either AA, A or B. Quality butters start with the best cream and you should look for only Grade AA butter. Obviously, they can add salt to it. You may choose to buy unsalted, although most people who buy it tend to use it mostly in baking. The flavor most of us think of when we think of butter is that of salted butter. Some premium dairy brands have higher butter fat content.

1 tsp. unsalted butter = 36 calories, 4g fat, 2.5g sat fat, 1g mono fat, 0g protein, 0g carbohydrates, 0mg sodium, 11mg cholesterol.

My diet is lacking in fats, so I often add a little olive oil, coconut oil or butter to make up for it.

eating clean for me means eating things that are only found in nature or are organic. so for the posts below me, butter and even the cream (if it's Coffee Mate, for example) are not "clean" to me because they are probably chock full of preservatives, artificial colors and flavorings and possibly even trans fats. i've been eating clean for almost 2 years now and i feel GREAT :)

Hi, I'm new. I hoping to spend some time here with you guys talking about clean eating.

My husband John and I have become very health conscious. Most of our food comes off of our farm where we eat more like American's did in the 1940s. We no longer will eat foods with MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), or regular corn syrup for that matter, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, hydrogenated fats or farm raised fish and soft drinks are a thing of our past. We limit nitrates, also. Wanting to avoid the hormones and antibiotics that are in most commercially supplied meats, we raise our own meat on the farm, all way down to our Christmas Turkey. Deer hunting and fishing are good providing us with a healthy source of deer and fish. We only buy rBGH-free milk and we free range our own fryers and egg layers. We also try to eat only organically grown produce that has not been irradiated or waxed. We use sea salt exclusively, walk daily, take dietary supplements and watch our weight. We are fortunate to have well water instead of chlorinated and fluorinated water and we avoid products that are not free of propylene glycol, sodium laureth sulfate and mineral oil. Our health is better than ever and we look forward to growing old together.

Hi - I've been using FIT for a couple of years now. It really takes the "gunk" off of your fruits & veggies. I notice an especially huge difference with grapes (it gets rid of that chalky coating).

I just picked up a different brand at Trader Joe's a couple of weeks ago & the ingredients look even more natural than Fit. It is called Environne Fruit & Vegetable Wash and the bottle says it's been around since 1987. I haven't tried it yet - when I do, I'll let you know!

Thanks for the website info., I agree it's so important to wash everything before you eat it. It's gross when you think about everything touching what you're buying.

I am so ready to start eating clean again. I've strayed a lot lately and I really need to refocus and start fresh again. I really hope they'll be some good conversation and topics to discuss. I'll definately try to do my part.

I'm glad to be a part of this group and that there is a movement towards this lifestyle. I'm 53 and in my early 40's had terrible PMS and hormonal imbalance. I was also heavier and irritable. My skin and hair was dry and my muscle tone was eroding.
I come from immigrant Italian grandparents, who ate only from their garden with small amounts of meat added to each meal. Since they lived into their early 90's I knew that this style had benefits.
I began to spend time preparing healthy meals with a focus on more veggies, fruit, smaller lean meats and fish. This was really the Italian way of life led in Europe. I began to walk daily (as my grandparents did) and started weight training several times a week.
Today, I rarely eat any processed enriched white products/food. I feel good and am healthy. I do struggle with my last 10 pounds to lose (for my height I should weight 120). Mainly I struggle because I enjoy cooking and eating far too much....I over consume calories on a daily basis.
My struggle now is to eat less because one will gain weight even if their diet is healthy, if they over consume.
I look forward to being a member of this page and hope to encourage people like you do......this isn't rocket science and is much easier to follow than people realize!

Hi there,

It sounds as if you are not eating enough protein in your daily diet. Also, butter is not "clean" and not even a "good fat" ...

i would cut out the butter, make sure the bread is whole wheat (or you are using anything except white flour to make it) and add more protein to each meal.

Clean eating is about balance of protein and carbs. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies too!

Good luck.
Michelle

Does clean eating mean no refined sugar? I really like chocolate, and sugar on my oatmeal.

how clean is the following menu?

B: yogurt, 2 prunes( yes I do like them), coffee with cream ( I can't wake without it - tis not clean to my knowlege, but progress NOT perfection is all I can handle), and toast ( remember bread to me is flour, water, yeast and salt ONLY)

L: cream of butternut squash soup ( recipe courtesy of Chef Keith Snow at www.harvesteating.com), and more bread and butter ( yes bread from mine own 2 hand so I control what is in it), applesauce with a touch of cinamon

D: steak, and potatos with carrots, butter and perhaps some fruit or another veggie

Snacks: dates,prunes,cheese and/or yogurt

I'm new to attempting to eat clean, and was hoping someone could help me to see where I am not eating clean, I don't care about low fat, hence the whole milk in the yogut ( better texture with the homemade yogurt), the cheese is REAL cheese NOT the processed stuff - we have on hand paremesean, asiago, and guyre that I have no issue putting into my body. And the coffee is with milk only, NO sugar -- I'm trying to stop eating refined sugar all together. I didn't mention water b/c with me water goes without saying.

Thanks for the input.

hhhmmm I am fairly new to this, but I am attempting to eat the least refined foods (such as brown rice flour instead of white flour, brown rice instead of white rice)...

Water must be clean (try to opt for the water without sodium-stay away from dasani)

Salt- Well I use sea salt only (but we do need minimal salt in our diet)

Hope someone else can answer your question more accurately!

Hey I'm here!
Just last night I was thinking about the best way to help me stay on track with my eating, and I realized how much "healthy crap" I put in my mouth. Although I definitely eat a lot more fresh foods that I used to, I also eat my fair share of the pre-packaged "healthy" items. I too am going to start on the clean eating path, so any advice you want to send my way, I'd appreciate. I am going to take your first bit of advice and just start to cut down on processed foods. I am going to check out Tosca's book today. Thanks!!

Well... first off eating clean is not as boring as you may think. When I first heard of clean eating a few years back, I thought that it meant straight up steamed food with no taste or seasoning.

I was wrong.

In the simplest definition, you consistently eat high quality foods that are basically free of all unnatural additives.

Clean foods are those without man-made sugars, hydrogenated fats, trans-fats and other unnecessary ingredients.

Spices are great for you, and help boost the flavor of food, without boosting the fat and caloric values.

By shopping the outerparimeter of your local supermarket and making subtle changes in the way you prepare and order food, you will start to live the clean way.

You can make an abrupt change, but honestly it is better to make slow and deliberate changes to your eating in order to totally grasp the clean eating lifestyle.

Eating clean is not difficult, but it does take thought, preparation, and consideration.

The basics of eating clean are using a few simple rules for most of your meals each day, all day, every day.

Basic rule of clean eating - the carbohydrate/protein pairing:
Consume a portion of lean protein (cold water fish, white meat poultry, etc.) in combination with complex carbohydrates (yams, whole wheat bread, etc.) at each meal, and you'll notice a significant change in how you feel and how you look.

Basic rule of clean eating - fresh veggies and fruits:
In addition, adding fresh fruits and vegetables to each meal will leave you feeling full & healthy! Clean snacks include the apples, fruit & nuts, or chopped veggies with hummus (one of my favorites) the fiber in these snacks satiates hunger pangs; plus fruits and veggies are loaded with beneficial vitamins and nutrients.

Basic rule of clean eating - frequent smaller meals:
Meals or snacks should be eaten at regular two or three hour intervals throughout the day if you are interested in really getting lean. If you are really interested in staying trim, eat more high quality foods regularly throughout the day, this will result in increased overall metabolism, fat loss, and retaining your lean muscle.

Eating clean to stay lean does not mean eating less. In fact, you'll probably eat more than you were before. But now, you will be eating lots of healthy, superior foods that rev up your metabolism and fill you with lots of energy.

Tips for eating clean include: preparing healthy foods in advance, having extra chicken breasts, tuna salad and chopped vegetables packed into a Tupperware containers for quick access.

If you have the discipline to eat clean even 80% (90% is best) of the time, you will notice your body becoming lean and tone. You can literally transform your body composition by eating clean. Eating regular, high quality meals supports your metabolic rate and your cells, by providing just the right combination of nutrients to empower your body to perform at the highest level. If you want to look your best & feel your best, you must eat clean!

For more information on clean eating, as well as a good starting point, refer to Tosca Reno's Eat-Clean Diet.
