I do count calories even though I'm eating clean. I LOVE food, clean or otherwise. I've found that I can overeat any type of food so I have to count calories diligently. And even with all of that, there are times I still overeat.

I don't really use much stuff like that either, when
I cool meat, usually I let it cook in its own juices
I think it is better for you..same with vegetables,
I like flavoring with onions and garlic and ginger,
green onions..I love leeks..leek and potato soup.

I must get on an put in a subscription to clean eating though I am very interested in.

You had asked about butter way down there and I never answered. I buy a land o lakes soft butter. They soften it with canola oil. I know there is a butter with olive oil too, but not in my area. You can make it though, saw it in the cookbook. I don't eat a whole lot of butter....put very little on my toast occasionally. My husbands does (eats it every morning with toast), so I had changed from margarine to butter about a year ago - before I'd even heard of clean eating. Got to worrying about what all was in it. Then read a report, and margarine is just plain bad stuff! When we do use butter, we use a lot less of it because it has so much flavor.

YES! I'm very excited about Thanksgiving. The last issue of Eating Clean magazine had quite a few ideas. I'll get some recipes to you later.

I saw the magazine and am going to get a subscription
for a two years...well, I thought you had to go
by recipes, like banana bread or bread in general,
cakes..people use butter, what do you use..just canola oil..is that good for you..

Yup, I am changing it all..I don't bake often..once
in a blue moon..can you replace and use applesauce
in cakes as well.
Like if it says 1 cup of oil, use 1 cup of sauce.
hugs, don't get me wrong, I should bake, I should be ashamed of myself, but I always felt none of it was
good for you..but if you replace lard for applesauce
or good oils..than I would love to bake... that is
one reason I stopped baking ....my daughters always say make some banana bread..which she loves.

What are you backing that you would use lard? I haven't used that for 18 years. I don't even keep shortening in the house anymore. I know for cookies some people use applesauce to replace the shortening. I've tried it with zucchini bread, and it was very good. For oils, make sure you use canola for high temps, and olive oil, or avocado oil, well, there's all kinds of good oils to use to replace the bad ones. It depends on the flavor you want I guess. I love olive oil! I've bought avocado oil, but haven't used it yet. I really loved the flavor is sesame oil in my curry chicken. There's so many things to make that's clean and healthy.

Oh, and I LOVE the clean eating magazine! I won't even let anyone borrow them, can't let them out of the house!

Thank you Denise, I am seriously going to pick up
a book, I also am thinking about checking out the
web and find a website and maybe adding it to our
IC team because eating clean might be a very interesting concept to other team members..I thank
you for becoming a team member and it looks as if
we are getting some new members.

I love Eating clean..today I am having a spinach
salad for lunch... and maybe a nice omelet for supper. Now I need to get some flour and try to
make home made bread and start baking from scratch.
What would you put in baking in the place of lard.

hugs

Hi..My name is Laurie..Denise was telling me about
Eating clean..sounds like a yummy idea... If there
are some things I cannot eat..I can replace them
with others..I have Intersitial Cystitis..I cannot
eat tomatoes or anything made out of them, anything
pickled, bananas (potasium causes flareup), fruit
juices (the citric acid) ..and lots more..I love the
concept of Eating Clean.. so is it just lots of different fresh fruit and veggies, lean meat..no
junk.. I think I need to stay away from breads and
cereals and sweets...cause I think they are very addictive to me.. is it better to eat bread if you
make it from scratch..I find this so interesting..I
needed to join, thank you Denise, you are a real
sweetie.

hugs

that is great! I found a huge difference from cutting out sugar and aspartame. The sugar gave me highs and lows and the aspartame made me crave more food, scary!

I just have to say that counting calories this past week has been very funny. I'm really eating clean, and I'm having to watch the calories to make sure I get enough! By supper time I see that I'm too low, and I have to keep eating. I'm doing the snacks mid morning, and mid afternoon, breakfast (I made sure to increase calories there), lunch and supper. Still low on the calories! This is great! I just eat more tomatoes, or fruit with supper and/or evening snack. After 1 week I can tell a difference already of no chemicals in what I eat. It's pretty funny that I was worried about if I should count them or not, and I have to just to make sure I get enough, well, funny to me anyway. Wish I'd started this years ago! emoticon

Hi Denise,

The calorie calculations aren't always very accurate. They can vary by a few hundred calories depending on your activity levels. I was also confused by that too when SP said my range should be 1200-1550, and yet my trainer told me that I need to be eating b/w 1600-1800.

My recent experience is similar to yours: I also just started eating clean recently after a 6 month long plateau and screwy metabolism. I felt great but I too still wasn't losing a darn pound! So, shortly after I started, I got a personal trainer who said that I wasn't eating enough calories (I was only eating 1200-1400) and I work out 5X a week. And with her adding weight training in my workouts she wanted me to eat ATLEAST 1600; preferably 1800. She said my body was on 'starvation mode' and holding onto the fat. I'm only 5'3" and weighed 167.5 and so, after a few days to ponder my disbelief that I actually need to EAT MORE in order to lose weight, I increased my calories to 1800 (!). That was 1 week ago and I've FINALLY broken my plateau and lost 1.5lbs this week...which is a good number! She said I might gain at first, b/c my body may need to adjust after being in starvation mode but I've lost instead but am still expecting a slight gain still. But ultimately I think she is right and I'm gonna stick to her suggestions.

I don't know all your specifics and I realize everyone is different but if you are working out and building more muscle then don't be too afraid to increase your calorie range a bit more especially if you are eating mostly clean foods. If you can, figure out what works best for you...you can always experiment and increase your range and if it doesn't work after 2 weeks or so decrease by 100-200 again...just my 2 cents based on my very recent (and frustrating) experience.

I'm still relatively new to the eating clean lifestyle and this situation of eating more calories, but I do hope this reply helps you even if it's just a little bit! ~Vita

Stacy, I have a heart murmur, so I have to watch my salt intake as well as take a lasix in the morning (a strong water pill). It doesn't take much for my water weight to go up and I have to really be careful because when that happens it's harder for my heart to push past the bad valve. I really becoming aware of some of the "bad" stuff I still have in my diet as well as needing more muscle built for strength as well as boosting my metabolism. I've been working on the muscle thing for about a month, and it's "moving" fat around which is kinda funny, but not burning it off yet. I'm sure it will come I'm just not a very patient person I guess. Better work on that too :)

Oh my goodness did we have a good supper! I baked a spaghetti squash, and made sauce from scratch! The tomatoes were from our garden mmmmmm. Made some Whole wheat Italian bread, and an Italian Pasta salad (whole wheat) with chickpeas and tomatoes in it. Thought surely with all that to eat my calories would be high for the day, but started interring them into my program (i use one on my palm pilot), and I've had under 900 for the day! That was with an omlet for breakfast, and mid morning snack and lunch. I was to busy cooking and forgot the afternoon snack - oh well. Here I was asking about counting calories, but if your using a lot of veggies it's just going to stay down. My daughter who is a vegetarian is here, so I didn't add meat in and I'm sure that kept the calorie count down. As good as the pasta sauce was I wouldn't want to add any in anyway. The best part is I made so much sauce that it feed 2 families and had some to can for a quicky supper later emoticon

The problem is that there are so many other factors that you have to take into account. Check your sodium, if that's really high, you may be holding onto water weight. They say 3500 cals equals a pound, but it's really not that cut and dry-at least I haven't noticed it to be. Just keep plugging away and stay within your range. You'll get there slowly, but surely!

I wasn't trying to loose 3 pounds...just looked at the amount of calories in vs calories out. If 3500 calories is 1 pound...by the numbers I should have lost 3.5 pounds for the week. But barely lost 1. I would like to loose 1 1/2 to 2 a week...but it stays at 1/2 to 1. I'm keep track of my calories burned as closely as my intake. I'm also very aware of loosing slowly for the skins sake as well as health....just gets disapointing when I feel like I'm doing all the right stuff, and it doesn't show up much. That's also the reason I wonder if some of the "bad" stuff I'm still using is holding my progress back....and not just pounds.

I don't know a ton on this stuff, but I don't know if you can lose 3 lbs a week on an ongoing basis. I mean even on the Biggest loser where they work out all day as their full time job they somtimes only lose one lb or none. I have about the same as you to lose and I am gaming on 1.5 -2 lb max for a weekly loss. From what I've read, that is the safest way and you are more likely to keep it off if you lose it at that rate, plus if you lose slow, your skin will shink better (also from what I've read). Good luck, lets keep each other motivated!!

How many of you keep track of calories with clean eating? I've got 50 more pounds to loose, and I'm just getting serious about clean eating. I've been tracking my calories for quite a while, and if anything I'm not getting enough. I think the reason I only loose 1 pound a week is because I don't eat clean enough yet. (according to the number of calories in vs. calories burned I should loose 3 pounds a week) I'm looking for a replacement for equal and crystal light, but wondering how "careful" I have to be about calories once I'm really "clean" eating.
