I'm so late with this today it's almost too late but then.............it's never too late!

So, I saw a pilates exercise show this morning where they showed an exercise that looked very much like an old stretch that I remember....sitting on the floor with legs spread wide and reaching with left arm toward the right foot then R to the left...this was done with the tummy tucked tight toward the navel of course and she pulsed two times with each reach....in actuality it is an obliques exercise...so here's the idea.....

50 on each side....can also be done as a standing opposite toe touch too I would think if the floor is an issue. I should be able to do these while watching tv!

50 push ups! They of course can be done throughout the day and wall push offs or countertop push ups are ok...believe me I didn't think I could do this but I made it!!

Ban the sugar day!

Here's the deal.....no sweets...you can have fruits in their natural state but no sugary desserts or even artificially sweetened sodas or sweets...Can you do it?

I don't have a sweet tooth but I also know this will be difficult since I often have one of my protein bars and I believe when I look at that label I'm going to find out that I need to avoid that today....oh, and my dove bar...sad but it'll be good to ban the sugar.

Today is for added activity minutes.....we all do our cardio and planned other exercise but today....we need to move an additional 30-60 minutes doing normal activity....whatever we do...do it with movement! dance while on the phone...walk in place while brushing your teeth...fold laundry and skip to the storage locations or make extra trips for everything you do. Then let's see how much extra movement we can add up!

Sorry, I do these all the time and forgot that it might not make sense to someone else.

You stand on a step with your heels off the step...then you raise up on your toes and then lower so your heels are lower than the step...this gives a full contraction and then stretch of the calf muscles and achilles.

If it hadn't been for the challenge, I wouldn't have done my crunches yesterday so it was very good for me too.

Yesterday as I finished my tramp run and went on to the arms, I became aware that I have skipped right over the abs.....Ooops!

So......today, let's do 100 abs reps....now those can be crunches, or old fashioned sit ups or some of those standing abs exercises or any of the crunchless abs exercises on the site....OR a combo of them all!

But that's not all............let's not eat with distraction today....that means any bite we eat should be without the TV, Computer, radio etc. Frankly even though I don't do the giving up for lent thing, this is the thing I thought I should do...lunch is always eaten to the noon news show here and I know that's a bad habit. So, I'm asking that you do this with me...misery loves company! LOL

From food to ST.....today let's challenge our upper bodies.

50 each...biceps curls and something called beer garden shoulder exercise.....take a dumbell in each hand hold with arms bent at elbow hands facing each other....the movement is to lift elbows to shoulder height so that your palms now face downward....the action is like that of pouring a bottle of wine or a pitcher of beer...LOL This is a hard exercise for the trapezius muscles and you will also feel it in the back and those upper arms. 50 might be a real stretch...be sure to do some shoulder rotations and upper back stretches after these!

I knew you would have eaten already but it's all in the planning for our week isn't it?

I had read an article this morning about getting heathy fats and protein in breakfast and that's what gave me the idea. I toasted a slice of dark rye and then melted 2oz of pepperjack....ok, maybe that's not the healthiest fat LOL but it was so good and it is true that the fat helps to hold...Now I have done 40 min on the elliptical and I'm not thinking about food at all. hmmm

Let's do another food type challenge......Breakfast is the most important meal of the day...if you haven't eaten yet today....(like me) Make sure your breakfast includes protein and a healthy fat along with a balance of carb....If you are ahead of me in the breakfast department....plan ahead for tomorrow's breakfast.

Sunday is traditionally a day of rest but we are on a quest so let's not rest too much! LOL

Here where we live, it is supposed to warm up and then rain will be moving in....so morning is our time for getting out for a walk before everything turns to a mess. As Janet said in her huddle.....the challenge for today is to somehow make the most of today!

It's the weekend and I think our day's mini challenge should be one of restoration.

Here's the deal: It starts with reflection...........

think about what you have done this past week....What did you do especially well? Maybe it was walking to the kitchen without your crutches..LOL or logging in thousands of steps, or maybe you're admiring the changes that all those workouts are making in your body in those new clothes...it doesn't matter what it is nor how big or small it might seem...and notice, it also needn't be a number on the scale...it's more about something we are DOING.

Ok, then we need to also think about what we might not have done so well. Maybe we're still snacking on things we know aren't as nutritious as they are calorie laden....Maybe we (me) aren't doing as much ST as we know we should. Again, this is not a means to get down on ourselves...just an honest reflection.

Now, with the good and the not so good fresh in our minds, the challenge becomes making plans for the next week which will....Accentuate the Positive....Elliminate the Negative!

Ok....this may be easy....or very hard.....

Today, the mini challenge is one of substitution. Now we can all choose the substitutions we make but let's match todays date....that's 8....8 healthy substitutions. You might decide to sub parking in a spot close to the store for parking out at the far edge of the lot so you need to walk briskly to the door (obviously this isn't for you Janet) Or maybe you sub fruit for a dessert or doing exercises during the commercials for just vegging out.

Anyway, the idea is to find 8 things in your life that you normally do and make a healthier choice. My first substitution this morning is a large mug of hot water with lemon for that first mug of coffee. It's a small thing but decreasing my caffiene while adding another water is a very good thing.

The WATP video I am currently using has mini ST sessions for abs, legs, arms, and chest/back. The abs consists of crunches, Pilates hundreds, and the elbow to knee crunches that are kind of like bicycles.
That's great you are feeling the results of your squat sessions and glad your knees are holding up. My knees complain a tad on occasion but I think I'm over that now. I do have a tender Achilles tendon and not sure what to attribute that to.

Your chicken salad sounds very good. Did taking the time to focus on the tastes and textures change your satisfaction do you think?

I don't usually do squats even though I should and have had some times when they bothered my knees but so far today I have done 3 sets of ten of the plie' squats. It's probably better for the knees that I am doing the sets spread out over time so my form stays better. The last time I walked back across the room from the kitchen sink, I could really feel that area where the butt meets the thighs...OMG! I can really tell I've done the work! LOL

What kind of mini ab thing did you do?

So last night I did a little mini ab session. Today I took the time to notice tastes/textures. I had chicken salad for lunch with celery, craisins, and just a touch of mayo, no bread. I really took notice of the crunch of the celery and the burst of sweetness from the craisins. I usually would have thrown in a handful of almonds or walnuts but didn't have any on hand. I do squats every day when I finish my walking workout but I will find another ST exercise to add today.

Way to go Karmin! I'm going to continue the count to ten between bites...it really worked for me yesterday!

All right.............TODAY.........

This one is a strength training challenge and If Janet has a mind to try it she'll need to do a different exercise but here goes....

Today, Do 50 plie' squats....OUCH! LOL You heard me right....but they don't need to be done all at once. I did ten of them already this morning and if I do another ten whenever I have the chance, it will be easy to complete the challenge and by the end of the day, my butt will be feeling it! How bout you?

Today's mini-c is all about food.

1- eat something you have never tried before....OR...prepare a familiar food in a new way.

2- count to ten between each bite (this is for me, I eat way too fast)

3-When you eat anything today, take some time to really note, the taste, texture, and the emotional sensations related to it.....for instance, yesterday I had some dark chocolate mints and with each nibble I noted the contrast of the rich dark chocolate and the sharp taste of the peppermint creamy filling....I relished the feeling of pleasure that this gave me. This helps to make us very aware of the sensation of eating.

Let's make eating interesting!

This may be as much a game as a challenge since we can opt in and out or modify at will to find our own ways to make it happen.

Today..............

Find 3 ways to get up and move when you would otherwise be sitting.

For instance during your favorite tv show....make the commercial breaks exercise breaks. Or dance while you're cooking. Maybe do some kind of movement while talking on the phone.

It's up to you to find both the movement and the times to move.

Janet, since your Dr. has given you the ankle exercises. Maybe your modification would be to incorporate those ....OR maybe your work on weight bearing would be your thing.
