I think I'm ready to post about a HUGE step I'm taking tomorrow.

Like most Sparkers, I'm sure, I have more than one wardrobe. For me, there is what I wear NOW, which I've added to over the last several years; but in my dressers is a complete (and practically brand new) wardrobe that fit me BEFORE... ah, the dreaded "Before."

When I lost weight in 1999-2000, 105#, it came off very quickly; luckily, not having financial resources, I bought very few new clothes. Two years later, when I started to regain the weight, 70# came on so quickly I burst right out of my clothes. My weight was stable for awhile, and I had remarried, so
I bought some nice new clothes.

I got rid of my few "skinny" clothes, because of the failure they represented. However, when I continued to gain weight - 10# here, 15# there, over the years - I bought larger and larger clothes and packed away what didn't fit anymore. I decided I WOULDN'T get rid of them, because I knew it WAS possible to reach that size again.

So here I am now, down over 40#, more active than I've been in a long time (although not nearly as active as when I maintained my large weight loss), and I've been thinking about getting out some of the smaller ("mid-size") clothes to see if they fit... I finally realized some of those I wear billow around me, so I think it's TIME...

On Wednesday, DH & I are taking GD Kaile to Las Vegas for two days - while he's gone tomorrow, I'm going to take a shower and give them a try!!!

CROSS YOUR FINGERS FOR ME~! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm sorry Vicki! You're absolutely right ~ I read what you wrote, but didn't keep it in my mental grasp. Many people only weigh in at the doctor's, and that is a good way to keep from fixating on the scale.

I SO dislike when people freak out over "gaining" a fraction of a pound.
I hear (read), "oh no, I shouldn't have eaten that third cookie - I've gained 2 ounces." I hope this isn't too graphic, but I can "lose" three pounds plus just by going to the bathroom!

I'm going for a check-up in July, and I'm excited to see what their scale says in comparison to my visit six months ago. However, I DID change my appointment from 3:30pm to 9am, for two reasons.

First, I know he'll want to take blood and do labs; the last time, they cost me over $300, so I put off getting them done again until my insurance kicks in July 1st. Going in the morning means they can pull blood right then, and
I don't have to make a second trip.

Second, the morning appointment means I'll be weighing in after a good night's sleep and on an empty stomach; rather than after lunch out with my friend, and drinking a few 32-ouncers of water during the day. That's not "cheating," it's just good sense!

It'll work for you too, Vicki! Hang in there & take care emoticon

P.S. I'll be following your No Scale Streak! emoticon emoticon emoticon

You misunderstood. I WON'T be weighing once a month. I'll be measuring once a month. The ONLY time I'll weigh is at the doctors office so that's only 1-2 times a year.

That's a good idea, Vicki - weighing in once a month lets you track your weight, but doesn't put pressure on you with frequent weigh-ins. Some people only get weighed when they go to a doctor's appointment! After all, it doesn't matter how many pounds a person loses; not unless they also build fitness, lose inches, improve health markers, and so forth.

I do weigh myself at home - it's a requirement for another team's weekly challenges - and at first that was difficult emotionally. However, I've learned the trick to using the scale regularly is to understand how easy it is for our weight to fluctuate; it's common to have pounds-worth of difference, even from day to day. Even more important, to accept and believe it!

All of us have had those times when stepping on the scale dashed our positive momentum! Our team's focus is not just how often (or if) to weigh-in, but to put those numbers in the proper perspective! Going with SparkPeople's philosophy, this is for the long term, a life-long project; our scale numbers should be treated the same way, counted in the LONG run!

I will be measuring my body once a month as far as I know. With me not weighing any more I might let the measuring go too and just rely on how my clothes fit.

Well, imagine my surprise when I stepped on the scale this week, and I unexpectedly broke out of the 270's... 269.8! (I'm lucky I didn't drink those extra 2 oz of water!) However, when I weighed in this weekend, it was the SAME! It's nice, but IS it a real loss?

I thought of a time, sometime last year I think, when I listed a mini-goal of losing 40# and reaching 258# - I didn't even come close. It felt so good to realize, even though it's pound by hard-fought pound, I'm actually getting there this time - for the LAST time.

I think I feel ready to give a tape measure a go and see what the differences might be. With my large size, no tape "fits" me, of course. That's a handy excuse; but I know to take some string, "measure" myself, and compare the string's length to a builder's tape.

That's for another day, however; right now, it's TO BED...
... the landlord's replacing the roof, and they'll be here 8AM! emoticon

We drive, for a number of reasons:
1. It's "only" five hours away, and an easy drive, freeway ALL the way.
2. Most importantly, to have our own transportation while we're there.
3. Also, to safely bring along my C-Pap machine, which is hard to carry
on a plane. Now that we need to bring along DH's Dialysis machine
and supplies, I can't imagine us ever flying.

I've driven Route 66 a few times - there's quite a bit of history - hard to believe it used to be the only way to get out west! When DD was going to Wisconsin for her freshman year of college, I rented a large car so we could take a "Road Trip" together (as well as moving her there). We zig-zagged through the Southwest, and up through the Midwest, 3500 miles in six days.

Driivng Route 66 was one of DD's dreams, so every once in awhile we'd pop off the freeway and drive the old road. To come home, I turned in the rental car and took two trains back; one across the top border of the US, and the second down the West Coast on the Coastliner... breath-taking scenery the whole way!

BTW, THANKS! ~ emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I watched a program on our Travel Channel this weekend about your Route 66 and Vegas and thought about you Elizabeth! Do you guys travel by car or do you fly? I could not believe the huge distances, what a beautiful country you have!

I'm a bit under the weather, got the flu and feeling very sorry for myself at the moment. Avoiding the scale and mirror, even my clothes feels thight, must be retaining water, yuk and grrr!

The mystery of where my "back-up" bathing suit disappeared to was solved when DH got out my suitcase so I could pack for Vegas... and there it was!
I hadn't worn it on our trip in April, so it was in with the clean clothes I'd forgotten to unpack. (I haven't been swimming but a few times since DH got so sick, so it's been awhile.)

It didn't take long for me to start wondering when I wore it last - probably February or March - because the swimsuit was TOO BIG!

If the bra section wasn't stretched out, I could have passed it on to someone else. It felt SO strange, throwing it away! For my second swim,
I put on my primary swimsuit, and instead of being too snug, it fit perfectly! With summer items on clearance, I'm shopping for a new one!!!

That's a bit of a low, but I don't think daughters notice the weight? can't remember if I ever minded whether my Mom was overweight or not, I can recall feeling very concerned when she started loosing weight when her health deteriorated. Mothers are always beautiful anyway emoticon

I was wondering if DD would notice any difference in me - meaning,
my size - on her visit, since it had been 11 months since she'd seen me.
I was hoping she might, but there really hasn't been that much of a change... She didn't say anything this time, but maybe the next visit, if (WHEN!) I make more progress... emoticon

Another lesson in dealing with the Scale, and why this team and its philosophy are so important!

I weighed in Friday, and up a pound; irritating, but I know I've stayed on track with my food and exercised well, so... whatever. Recheck weigh-in Saturday morning - usually I do two or three days in a row, and average them or see the pattern to get my "real" weight - and up two MORE pounds!

Okay, now I'm steamed... I told DH how frustrating it was, and what am I supposed to put for the Challenge I'm on??? It's hard to weigh in weekly - my usual once a month is much easier on the psyche. Then I thought of this: the Heat. I've never handled heat well - perhaps that's the reason.

Our temps had been breaking records for over a week - we're talking 110-plus degrees in an area that starts to wilt when it's mid-80's and above. The very mild weather is one of the reasons I moved to and stayed here in southern CA. Even with the AC on, maybe the heat was still affecting me?

The weather broke yesterday, and we opened the windows and turned on the fans last night; this morning was 25 degrees cooler than a few days ago. I didn't really think of it at the time, but when I weighed-in - my last and final chance to see something positive - I was DOWN those three pounds.

I don't think I can do a weekly weigh-in, not even for the Challenge. I'll carry over the same weight for that team thread, and change it when I weigh-in once a month. If I keep swimming, and keep up the level of exercise I've been doing the last two months, I'll have to factor in muscle building too!

I am in for this same challenge for October! I want to keep doing what I've been doing; and knowing I have this team for motivation and accountability, helps keep me going late at night when the temptations are the worst.
I know, no matter how slow the progress, I'll be getting healthier every day (just like you, L. Lady).

tHIS SUMMER I have had some health challenges but I think the increased exercise has helped restore me to better health. I hate taking pills, always have symptoms/aftereffects the dr doubts. I am hoping a 20 lb weight loss will shoe the high blood, diabetes, cholesterol meds out the door. Let's do it together.

Yes - EOM is End of Month... We made it - it's the 30th - how do you feel the month went for you? I'm measuring first thing in the morning. Looking forward to it! First, I'm going to try the dresses on again, and see if there's a difference in the fit; then I'll dig out the measuring tape, and give it a go.

Hello my dear teammates! I have missed you SO MUCH! I know the end of the month is fast approaching, and with it our goals...

Being a part of this challenge has really helped me - even though I haven't been online very much these last couple of weeks. I'm doing more strength training than before, and worked through a pulled/strained muscle in my upper left arm.

Plus, just knowing the team has been here, working on the same or similar goals, was very motivating! I say we continue the challenge into and through October, using EOM September as a mid-point.

How 'bout you? Sounds good?! Elizabeth ~ emoticon emoticon

I hope its nothing. I know its frustrating to get an ailment when you've got to care for your hubby. Hang in there.

Thank you. My hubby is having shoulder replacement surgery tomorrow morning out of town. He'll be in the hospital probably until Thursday. As for me, I'm not sure what my problem is but it is frustrating. The last several days I've been having a lot of pain in my left abdomen area and left shoulder. Not sure what it is. I thought it was muscle pulled or something from a yoga class I took on Monday, but it isn't getting better so I'm not sure. If it isn't better by the time we get back I will have to call the doctor.

I hope you are not ill.
I know you are not a failure, just hang in there.
Dr just put me on meds for high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesteral. I have never been treated before for these so it was a shock this week. The meds give me diarhea, make me dizzy, and MAKE ME SO HUNGRY I COULD EAT PAPER. Getting old is a blip!

I can so totally relate to your statement about get back down to the figure stated. I had thought I was doing really well and then last week I was so bloated and swollen I felt like a total failure. I am trying to keep plugging away though and I'm trying to preplan and use goals and mantras to get me through the next 4 days which I'll be spending out of town and mostly at the hospital so wish me luck!

If I keep working out I might get back to the 189 shown here. Its hard losing the same 10 pounds over and over. I guess that's why I want to use other measures so I won't feel such a failure.

Barbie, how is it that you will lose weight but not inches. I thought we had convinced each other that the inches came first and would be easier to notice.

Hello hello hello! I'm going to catch-up on this thread and our challenge in a bit, but for now just a quick note to say I haven't dropped off the face of the earth... although it sure feels like it... I've been reading, and for the most part keeping up, but haven't posted lately.

I got water in my ears in Vegas, even with earplugs, and came down with sinusitis. I've had a rough week, bad cold symptoms and feeling SO crappy! I know it sounds lame, but just a couple of days ago, I literally couldn't even remember what month it was. Sudafed has finally taken the pressure off my sinuses/eyes/face, and I feel like a functional human again, but it's frustrating - I "lost" a whole week!

Exercise for me this past week has been very low-key. Luckily, with me under-the-weather, it wasn't a "Kaile" week, so it was just DH and me; of course, that didn't help in keeping track of time! We did take Kaile out today, special time together before she starts 1st grade tomorrow, and had a good walk (75 mins). I've only used the exercise band on my arms a couple of times, but I've stretched every day.

Don't know how that will work out for my challenge... but it's more than nothing! Now I'm better, I can hit the pool again. I'm sorry I've been MIA!
Here's to a great week for us all! emoticon emoticon

I am weighing once a week on Monday mornings, but other than that I'm not doing anything. I don't want to measure until the 30th because I don't want disappointment in case I don't lose any inches. I've been feeling really good and staying on track so I'm happy with that.

I am revving up my metabolism. I exercised aerobically 6/7 days last week. I needed no pain killers for bad back, cut acid reflux meds to half a dose, and IBS is so under control I do not fear going out! Awesome.

Awesome that the sleeves on your dress are feeling more comfortable. I surely know what you mean because I have a couple of blouses that are too tight. I'll have to try them on to see if they are fitting better. I've been really bad with the core exercises since I had my hysterectomy 2 years ago. I keep thinking (using as an excuse) that my belly is tender, but I think it is just in the way from not using it and I need to suck it up and work on it anyway. Tomorrow is my strength and core day so watch out belly I'm going to be working you! Keep up the great work and you'll soon find that you make fewer and fewer not so good choices!

Well said. I am learning to be selective about what I am willing to eat. It is amazing how I can forget all about my goals and plans until after I eat something I shouldn't. I think that is why reading the goals and journaling is helping me so much.

By the way I had on a short sleeve dress whose sleeve used to cut off my circulation, they were so tight. Yesterday, they did not feel loose but I was comfortable in the dress. Now if only I did not have to wear a spanx to hold in the tummy. I guess I'd better go do my crunches.

I agree about reading the goals daily. Sometimes with cheesecake for you and brownies for me, we have selective amnesia. We forget what we are working for until we've eaten it and then we have remorse. I am still eating things I should not but here is one thing that works for me. Why eat the cheesecake if its not premium quality? I do this with brownies. If they come from the store, I can avoid them easily. But homemade is another story. I guess my point is if you must eat it, at least enjoy it.This is saving me a lot of wasted calories.

You're welcome and good luck. I am sure you'll have a successful week. Today there was cheesecake for one of the bosses' birthday and I successfully avoided it. Woo hoo I think I'm on a roll. Now if I can just keep it rolling. I am finding that reviewing my goals/plan and journaling is really helping me stay focused.

Just keep making it a goal to increase what you did the day before. Do you keep a 32 oz. water bottle with you at all times? Years ago a friend made that suggestion to me and it has worked. When I have the water bottle I am successful mostly. On the weekends when I don't have it not so successful. So, just try to figure out what will work for you.

As long as you got back on track after the state fair you should be good to go especially with all of those minutes on the stair stepper. I'm not taking measurements until the end of the month either, but I am weighing weekly. Have an awesome week!

Way to go! I know what you mean about being tired. We walked a lot in Seattle so I was tired too. I still made myself go for a walk today. We're well on our way to being successful! Let me know if you have success with the measurements.

Wow 63 minutes on the stepper? That is awesome. You should see results! I did only 5 minutes the other day and I could definitely feel it so I think I'll be adding that to my workout on occasion. Did you ever figure out how to put your measurements in? Once you go to start and find "weigh-in" you just click on that and if you scroll down a ways you will see where you can enter you weight and other measurements.
