Happy Christmas!

I was just wondering if there was anyone on this team who is into clean, vegan (or non vegan) eating, and who is not planning to weigh/measure themselves, but rather keep track of their fitness levels and how much/what they're eating? I find that the stress of trying to lose weight usually makes me fail, and I do better when I focus on healthy eating and becoming active. Anyone looking for a buddy with similar goals? =D

I'm stuck again! weight not shifting, been 3 weeks now, grr. Been so good drinking water, exercising and keeping to my proper food intake. I guess the additional activities is causing more muscle gain than anticipated...might even be water retention, our temps are way up, I wonder...

At least we in our sunny season, in some ways a lot easier than for you guys in the cold. I have been collecting light, low fat recipes for salads and treats. Can't wait to be home to start cooking these healthy alternatives. I made a promise to myself to loose weight over the holidays...watch this space in the new year, I will be reporting back! emoticon

I would say don't eat it unless its good. Sometimes we eat storebought items that are mediocre. Save your calories for home made or fresh. By the way Hannah how much are you going to make. I can make and eat a pan of brownies any time. Me making it represents a danger!

It is so difficult to say NO during the festive time, seems as if everybody is out to tempt us with delicious decadent goodies. Might be an idea to make a promise to oneself not to indulge if you did not make it yourself? I think I'm going to do that, I'm going to stay away from the shops over my 3 week leave period and send hubby to shop.....

Sorry you had a bad day. Concerning your stress- could it be that you are not eating enough? When I went to Weight Watchers I got within 10 pounds of goal and could not lose any more. I started having withdrawal pains and was jittery all the time. I went to the dr for something else and he asked if I was on drugs? Duh! No! Then he said my body was fighting me to lose weight and I needed to eat more. I was so upset because eating more would not result in a weight lost but I followed what he said and my weight stabilized. Bottom line- check your nutrition to see if you are eating enough.

I don't understand why I've been struggling so much with food lately... especially when I thought I'd gotten a good handle on it, and was doing well with both my food choices AND with the emotions surrounding food.

I feel an extraordinary amount of tension - not really what you'd call stress, like "I'm stressed out" - but just feeling tense and irritable and easily frustrated ALL the time. I don't know if this source-unknown tension has led to the food issues resurfacing, or it's because the food issues have resurfaced that I'm tense... I just feel like I "can't handle" (emotionally) anything that goes wrong.

This evening, I was doing an online job app for DH, and the website "timed me out" even though I'd been steadily working on it. I had to start over, and I was literally in tears! Blockbuster screwing up, websites down when I need information, endless round-a-bout voice mail systems... Normally that kind of stuff doesn't faze me, but the last few days I've been a mess.

MOST frustrating is, I have to fight with myself practically every minute over these damn food urges and cravings, and sometimes it even feels like "torture." I just want to give in sometimes, you know? I haven't, because I know that that will only make it worse, but I'm getting SO tired of the fight.

Maybe writing it out like this will help... emoticon

Sorry, having a BAD day... emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

CONGRATULATIONS, REE! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Seeing real progress on the scale can be a relief, can't it? So I congratulate you on the weight loss, but more so for your positive attitude! What you said really struck me: if we weigh-in higher, we blame ourselves; if we weigh-in lower, we thank the scale! NO, it IS us - WE make it happen, no matter what the mode of measurement is.

I got the results of my last lipid panel, and I was blown away! My overall cholesterol was down to 148, with the following breakdown: HDL up to 52; LDL down to 78; triglycerides down to 110. I AM very pleased, and motivated to continue eating more healthily - I WORKED for that, you know?! But guess what my first reaction was...

I wondered if my blood got mixed up with someone else's at the lab!

What is a Red Velvet Cake? It sounds marvellous save me a slice please.
I was just looking at a menu for a formal dinner in Dec with a club we belong to . Automatically I loked at whats least fattening! Not always what I would LIKE to eat but its my choice to aim for low fat.
Iam feeling positive at present. I worked out if I can't/wont t change how I eat the alternative is change exrcises. I had become a bit compla1cent over them. I really worked at my daily ones today and pushed myself hard at them . Later went for a walk Its such a fantastic autumn day it was a treat to walk in woods by a lake and feel self righteous too that is added to my exercise minutes.
Hope you are all doing ok Ree.

Now you know why I avoided the weigh in today. I weighed in on the 29th before the Halloween candy day. I lost inches too. I am so proud that I followed through. Boy was this a rough month. What with starting on diabetic, hypertensive, chloresteral meds- a triple whammy.

That's great! I don't know if I'm brave enough to do my usual end-of-month weigh-in... I was holding steady as of last week - an unofficial weigh-in for my Fall Challenge team - but I don't want to mess up a good thing! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Here comes Halloween... We're heading over to SD's (Kaile's Mom's) for dinner and trick-or-treating. This was Scott's favorite holiday, so I'm working on dealing with that too... It's the third without him, though, so the sharpest edges seem to be rounding off, and I'm looking forward to seeing the kids without so much bittersweet.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Ree, I understand about feeling like the Nutrition Tracker is too much, especially with the food restrictions you're already working around.
However, instead of "having" to enter all your food every day, you can use it in other ways.

For example, enter some of your regular meals, and see how they stack up compared to what you think they contain nutritionally. I also use the tracker to plan for eating out - Spark has links to dozens of Restaurants' nutritional pages.

I also use it to check special foods - like this Red Velvet cake DH won at the Cakewalk. What's in it, and how can I work it into my usual foods for the day/week? Try doing just two or three days of regular tracking, just to get a solid idea of your food content.

The great thing about the food tracker is its flexibility - being able to enter and delete as often as you want or need. I also keep my tracker private - that way there's no shame or embarrassment, and I can be completely honest. My tracker is ALL for me!

I don't officially track any food on SP! I cant get to grips with it.
Basically I eat low fat,
low calories
as much fresh unprocessed food as possible.
no wheat,
low salt as DH has to watch his BP.
I eat very little red meat, its all poultry or fish or eggy main meals
Lots of salads, veg and fruit,
Oats for b fast with fruit and soy milk.

I dont count calories regulaly as feel I have enough restrictions with low fat, no wheat diet.
Sodium is high in a lot of processed food. I add flavouring with herbs and spices .
Happy Sunday to all.
Is there a tradional Sunday dinner? Here in Uk its a roast meat and roast potates traditionaly. I do dry roast potatoes with lots of veg with a chicken portion usually. Best wishes to all. Ree emoticon

REE - Did you add "Sodium" as a nutrient to track on your food tracker?
I added sodium to my tracker for another team's weekly challenge, and was surprised by the results; I've kept it on, and continue to track it.

I didn't realize that dairy foods, which are my primary source of protein, have so much sodium (especially cottage cheese). I follow the basic rule of thumb that the more natural a food is, the lower the sodium will be.

I've been using that to make better choices; for example, I use mainly cucumber and celery to scoop my hummus, instead of Triscuits. My average sodium is going down each week - slowly but surely making progress (from 4404mg in August to 3415mg this week).

Have you looked at your sodium intake? Are you drinking diet coke? I actually had a gain one week when I was all legal because of the coke. Also processed foods have lots of hidden sodium which can make you retain fluid.
Its warm here in Maryland- I was out with no jacket (short sleeves!) Rita

That's a good idea, Ree. There's a helpful Spark article about adding resistance bands to any work-out, and how they can easily and inexpensively add variety to our exercise routines.

I've also read that varying the amount of calories per day is another way to shake the body out of a plateau - low calories a couple of days, a regular amount for a couple of days, and then over calories for a day or two.

I'm also very satisfied with eating the same foods over and over. In looking over my food tracker to find my sources of protein (for Vegetarian Week),
I realized I eat the same foods for my basics virtually every day.

I started then to try to shake up my routine a bit. Now, some of my days are higher in fat and lower in carbs; some are higher in carbs, low in fat (however, I do aim to keep my protein intake at the mid-range level).

Weighed-in this morning - how weird is this?!? EXACTLY the same as the last time... Still taking the number with a grain of salt!

Here's the link to the Resistance Bands article:

Spark also has several videos for Resistance Band exercises and work-outs under Fitness articles - here's a link to that page:

All that emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon will warm you up!

Hi to all on a sunny frosty Monday morning here in UK. Mondays are a fresh start for any of us who are struggling Its more a matter of me staying the same month after month I do want to get off this so long plateau and see my scales moving again. I read an on SP about boredom and how the body needs change. I think my problem is I am a creature of routine I do same old things .I do same exercises daily. I eat same type food every day.
So today is change time. I changed my exercise routine a little and put more energy into doing them.I changed my breakast and had a boiled egg plus small wheat free roll.
You are so right Elizabth we all have choices we just have to use that priviledge. We can't blame anyone else its OUR own choices that matter. So my choice is get off my steady routine make a few changes to jolt my body up a bit. Then see if the end of the plateau appears on my horizon.
Warm wishes to all. Ree emoticon

I hope you're feeling better, Rita, and staying on track has been easier.

The last few days, all I've wanted is to binge binge binge! I don't know why - nothing is that different, at least not that I can recognize so far - but I can't seem to shake it. I came to Spark several times to keep myself from giving in and reaching for anything I could find.

Another way I've coped is the choices I made - made with purpose:

The "It Could Have Been Worse" Solution!

It could have been a package of cookies; it was eight mini-candy bars (400 cals and 14 fat grams, instead of 1000 cals and 44 fat). It could have been a half-gallon of ice cream; it was cottage cheese and pineapple (healthy, but took me over calories). It could have been a bowl of cookie dough; it was 1-1/2 cups of trail mix.

CHOICES CHOICES CHOICES!

This is what I tell myself: On a bad day or during a bad night, just make one "better" choice. Then, try to make another - it will probably be a little easier. And another. In the end, you're better off than if you "gave in" completely.

Unfortunately, that's what I've been fighting lately: GIVING IN & GIVING UP!
I haven't. I've been over-calories and/or over-fat more than once, but I haven't given in and lost control. String enough of those days together, and I've got another week under my belt... because THIS IS MY LIFE, not a diet!

Right now I'm talking myself into a healthy choice for dinner - it's getting too late, but I've got to be ready mentally to be satisfied with my choice.

Fiber One, 1/2 cup trail mix, skim milk: off I go! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Over the summer my scale went down 12 lbs but I lose and gain the same 10 so I guess when the dr says I lost 2 lbs it was since last year when I was thinner?! You are right- I can't compare scales so I will use the home scale for now. I have greater access to it and doing averages... will only confuse the data.
Thanks both of you for the suggestions. Tomorrow I will read some of my favorite articles and refocus on the Spark diet. What would I do without you.
Thanks again,
Rita

That's good advice, Hannah. When I hit a wall like that, I remember that every day is a series of choices, and that *I* am in charge of those decisions. I concentrate on doing Just One Thing - filling up my water bottle, driving past the fast food places, reaching for fruit instead of candy.

Just one choice towards the healthy side... and accept that that IS a step toward success. DON'T get down on yourself - self-criticism can lead to that downward spiral we all know so well. Remember: ONE is more than nothing – string together some of those “ones” and it will add up!

I tried posting this yesterday, but the internet connection kept dropping…

Hello Team, just a quick "HI" from Vegas... emoticon

I've been saving this thread for when I have more time... and then realized there's NEVER "more time"… Maybe now DOES count as "extra time" - I was going crazy last night, and couldn't figure out why I was so squirmy. Then I realized: I don't HAVE to do anything!

I'm used to having so much "on my plate" - especially emotionally - that to NOT have that pressure feels too weird... Don't worry, I'm getting over it! Yesterday I pushed myself so hard physically; today’s my rest and relaxation day.

Rita – Question: I’m trying to understand exactly what you meant about the different weight measurements. Do you mean that at the doctor’s, the difference between your weigh-in at the same doctor’s office the time before this appointment and the current appointment was five pounds, but at home your scale shows a difference of twelve pounds over that same time period?

Or, do you mean that you weighed at home and over time lost 12 pounds; but when you weighed in on the doctor’s scale, it showed you at 7 pounds more than the home scale? If that’s the case, let me say: If we can’t count on our weigh-ins on the same scale to be reliable, we definitely can’t compare weigh-ins on different scales - they don’t have the same baseline. I know it’s frustrating…

Well, I woke up today to pouring rain… I guess the rain we left behind in Los Angeles caught up with us! I’ll be working online until my 24-hour internet purchase runs out, and then it’s out for fun on the Strip or swimming with DH. Tomorrow we go home, so making the most of today and tonight.

Take care ~ Elizabeth emoticon emoticon

Baby steps will get you back Rita, back to basics will also do the trick, are you drinking your water? Try to have at least 1 "good" meal a day then go for 2 then 3, track what you eat and review. What helps me when I go off track is reading Spark articles, I normally start with health related ones then go on to motivational ones. Reading blogs are great and leaving comments on Spark members pages will lift your spirit. emoticon

In spite of all the good advice some of us including me still place so much realiance on scales. It makes or breaks a day I know. When will we learn there,s a lot more to it than a number on a dial. I am telling myself I KNOW I didn't over eat. I KNOW I increased exercises but no weight loss shows. Yes Its frustrating not see an lower number on the scale but we didnt pile wieght on in a few days It takes a lot of time to see it come off.Keep Going. Ree emoticon

Thanks Hannah for the encouragement. I guess the weight loss is a combination of the dr scale and mine but at least its a lost. What healthy things are you doing these days? Your modelling helps me get back on track.

Dr scale says I only lost 5 lbs not 12. This is a disappointment but I shall keep going. He changed my meds too. Can you believe the other diabetes meds gave me terrible headaches, nightmares, and made me so mouth hungry. I had a lot to contend with in Sept. I hope Oct is better for my health. Right now I am a bit off track but I am going to
"fake it til I make it"
Strut those skinny jeans, girl!

The scale is just one measure of successfully following the plan. How about trying on those skinny jeans or noticing you have greater endurance?

emoticon for promoting this team! It's a pity more members are not active as in posting here but I do believe some might be reading our threads and finding motivation/inspiration.

Steady as you go Ree, will be thinking of you....BIG HUG!

I had the auditors at work for 3 weeks and it's been hectic, difficult to make time for the important things. Glad to say I waved them goodbye on Friday so I will be posting more.
