Hi! I am glad I found this group. I very recently found out I have GERD and have noticed that it feels like my throat is closing up and I can't swallow. I have been eating smaller meals--not an entirely bad thing. Also, I noticed my throat is irritated. I don't know if it is still from the scope or just sore, but I am going to get some lozengers today. I'm just glad to know that I'm not imagining these symptoms and that others have experienced them.
I don't really get heartburn (although since I've been paying more attention to my symptoms, I have very slight heartburn a lot that I never even noticed before). The problem I have is throat tightness and choking/gagging at night. The choking has stopped once I realized what this might be. I go to a GI on the 1st and will get a proper diagnosis. I would've never thought about acid reflux with these (like you said) bizarre symptoms. Very strange how differently it affects people. It is a scary thing, and as I talk about it with family and friends, I realize more people have it than I even knew about. Start talking about it, and maybe you can get more support around your area than you knew existed :)
I hope you find something that works for you. I know that just having someone to talk to, knowing that I'm not alone in this, has helped me tremendously. It's almost like having support takes away some of the GERD's power to scare me as much.
Aciphex is supposed to be good but it's costly and doesn't work too well for me. Nexium is good too but my insurance does not cover it at all, have to pay out-of-pocket. Prilosec doesn't work for me neither does Protonix. Tried them. Tomorrow I'm going back to Nexium to see if that gives me some relief. If not, I will call the doctor...sigh.
Something that helps my throat alot are sucrets. The regular old cherry ones, like we used to get as kids. They seem to soothe the burn and sometimes I use the throat sprays, like cepacol or chloraseptic. Anything that numbs my throat. I stay away from Halls or anything mentholated though. See if that might help.
The burning throat really hurts! I've been so desperate as to eat ice to soothe it. I know how frustrating it is to have symptom after symptom, getting rid of one, then another pops up. It just seems to be a never ending battle. My doc told me the painful throat and mouth is from the acid coming up and burning the tissue. It actually burned a hole in my tonsil which was excrutiating and took months to heal. I'm seeing my dr next week to see about another med to try because my insurance doesn't want to pay for the Protonix I was on, and let's face it: Prilosec just doesn't cut it. I was wondering about Aciphex and I'm a little reluctant to try it. Does anyone know of a GERD med that works, we can take long term and isn't going to throw my insurance co. into a tailspin? I
I agree Melanie. GERD symptoms vary so much. I am having a problem for about 14 days now with burning mouth and throat...it's the strangest thing and most uncomfortable. I take Aciphex a Proton Pump Inhibitor for about 4 months now. I had been taking Nexium prior to that, and did so well on that I stopped taking it. But I began to have the same terrible firey feelings and went to the fam doctor because it wouldn't go away. They changed my Nexium to Aciphex. For about a month, I thought Aciphex was a miracle drug it worked so well. But now I'm getting the burning again. Nothing seems to help.
I also had an upper endoscopy by a gastroenterologist, and will be seeing him next month as a follow up. I wanted to see him now, but there were no openings. Soon I'll be seeing my fam doctor for a B/P checkup and will tell him about this. I read online about the side effects patients experience using Aciphex. It's amazing -- from headaches to diarrhea, more heartburn, upset stomach etc. Why do they give us meds that create a whole set of new symptoms?
If anybody takes Aciphex and has any side effects from it, could you please send me a sparkmail and tell me about it.
Hi, I'm fairly new to this sparkteam, but not to GERD. I've noticed that alot of us have fears and questions about our symptoms. I'm one of them. I would love to support anyone who needs it, and I need your strength too. GERD is not just heartburn, it has some frightening and sometimes bizarre symptoms. Let's talk to each other and see if we can help our team members.
