I had the surgery in Feb 2007 (after suffering for 34 years). It has just been in recent years they got the surgey more prefected = but the hernia can comt e back - mine is ever so slightly - but the 3 1/2 years of relief have been wonderful.
I learned after the surgery that a hiatis hernia can cause numerous other health problems. I was often talked to about "excessive use of sick time" and since the sueger I don't often get sick. I still can have problems with GERD. As I told one of my docs I can not understand how tightening the esophogus after the surgery would change the fact that there was excess acid production. The GERD is not as bad - and I guess it goes away for some. I guess it depends on the underlying cause - I have to be on "proton pump inhibitors" to reduce acid production. I hear some people don't need anything after surgery.
I would recommend it - even if it has to be repeated - you cannot believe how crummy you felt before surgery. Whatever your choice I wish you luck. I am so happy that I had it done!
"Dream if you must - act on that dream and it will come true."
Has anyone ever done surgery to heal the hernia? I was thinking of doing that. I'm always getting terrible heartburn no matter what I eat. I get chest pains, abdominal pains, and bloating like you wouldn't believe. Plus, I can't seem to lose any weight. I've been trying for months to lose, and the scale never budges. Has this been the case for others? Has anyone had the surgery done? If so, then how successful was it?
