I'm a relative newbie to yoga and have discovered I love it. As part of a healthy wellness incentive, my work started it 2 x's a week for employees. We have instructors come in from a local studio that focuses on hot yoga...(ours is regular flow, no heat). I'm unsure of trying the hot version. I sweat already in our regular class. I'm probably the heaviest one that participates and I get a good sweat going while everyone around me seems to be just dry as can be! I can only imagine how I would get through a Bikram class. :)

ditto, I would use the same category for yoga stretching. Now starting 90 minute Bikram 3 times a week.

I've felt the same way about tracking...but do anyway because I like seeing it added to my fitness minutes. I choose the "yoga, general stretching" choice.

PUNCHILOUIE: I practice Ashtanga two or three times a week depending on my work schedule. It definitely is more of a calorie burn than Hatha, so I track it religiously. I love how strong it has made me. It's probably my favorite part of the week!

ANGELCITYGAL after all what is most important is how you feel after a day of exercise, how close are to your goals and how what you do helps you to get closer to them.

Motivation is the clue AIMLESS_AM, good point! Ashtanga burns a lot of calories, how long do you practice it and how often?

LAVENDERLILY what a nice way to get a bonus and more flexibility and focus. Like you I don't track my practice, but the fact of feeling balance, flexible and focus are my rewards! I'm in maintenance mode though!

I don't track my Hatha Yoga and just consider it a meditation -stretching activity. The extra calories spent are just a bonus that I enjoy.

I track yoga because it makes me feel good and keeps me motivated when I account for all the ways in which I'm active each day. The statistician in me loves seeing it all add up. I primarily do Ashtanga now, but this was true even when I only practiced Hatha.

Thank you both for the feedback. I wondered if "counting" the calories burned from my mostly Hatha practice might be working against me in creating a false picture of my calorie needs. Bit you're right, it is still a calorie burn.

what a great link TIMESHASCOME56, thanks for posting

ANGELCITYGAL why not count the calorie burn? Hatha Yoga is not like Power Yoga but calories are burned, most importantly muscles are used, stretched, twist, becoming more flexible. The Fitness Track in my humble opinion, is only a tool to see where you are. If you prefer only to track aerobic minutes is ok too. The site mentioned by TIMESHASCOME56 is useful because involves weight, age and duration of different activities/exercises so you have a better idea of the calories burned by doing the activity/exercise.

Do you all track your practice in your activity trackers? I'm wondering whether counting the calorie burn is I misleading since I know my practice isn't aerobic.
