Maybe you may want to know that my wheel developed a flat while doing yoga "with" Bethenny and Kristin ... it only had seemed to work with throwing an entire 88 minute comprehensive (and not just backbends) practice at it ...(and I am talking beginner, from the floor wheel - no dropback and no eka pada nonsense ... to any of you advanced studio yogis out there ...)

Of course, when I say "tough noogies", you know I mean "tough noogies" for Bethenny Frankel ... and not anybody else ...

No time for one of her own co-creations, one of the things she swore by, for years ...!

I buy FEW and far between ... yoga DVDs (although, to date, I have WON three yoga DVDs, a Larry Lane Yogaerobics master class, and two yoga private sessions, and a Myyogaonline.com premium membership for 1 year, from which I've downloaded - mostly belly dance and some pilates, though .... ) ... so you know that what I get (and even win!), meets my exacting standards ... since I create my own ... lol

Generally, with my constraints, I have developed a nose for the more centering of the power yoga practices available on the dvd racks today. With my Feel Good Yoga Core Power being on the low end of "centering" ...

Having to avoid long down-dog holds rules out a bunch of others ... and also classes at the original Nameless studio (many of those long holds in downdog were during arm balances they flowed into, which I had never even gotten to hang-time basis with, with that strength level and/or at that weight at the time. No love lost there. Might still have been taking those classes, though, and glad I'd made a clean break ... their style IS inversion-happy ... me never being an inversion-lover ... BUT...)

The rest remains to be seen.

I was catching up with the family via phone... tundra conditions at times out west too; and a long lost cousin ... there was a lot of cooking going on at my place. Apt was drafty, again ... and yes ... I had no time for much ... I did do Body by Bethenny plus some ecstatic dance, in anticipation of getting the follow up DVD ...

Um, she gave THIS more CENTERING of the power practices, still featured on My Yoga Online, up?

Oh, well ... tough noogies ...

according to this blogger, urdhva dhanurasana seems more contraindicated than plough pose for my condition, yet I have done it quite often ...

But, my diagnostic tools are the poses themselves and how I feel in them, and not some blogger's opinions and photos ...

Have to redo my recording ... I am tentatively adding back in plough pose (halasana) ... the only inversion I will be re-introducing in ... I do not do that well with prasarita padottanasana ... it will have been over a year since any ... and like with downdog any hold over 3 breaths I modify the pose - likewise, towel under shoulders with halasana ... a tight, fast roll-into, not unlike the same-looking dryland swim training drill exercise ... which had been done on a 2 inch gym mat, though ...

my neck is nearly always to kinked not to try this ...

I finally ordered Bethenny's Skinnygirl Workout (having previewed it via Netflix--viewing - not doing). After reading this article (I am a former subscriber to Health) www.health.com/health/article/0,,207
53
964,00.html
, she stated she does not do yoga or actual dedicated exercise, for that matter at this point in time... and noting that the price of the DVD had dropped (and it may not be in DVD-R form, but something far more non-deteriable) ... I am excited to try this ... there is less yakkity-yak from Bethenny on this one.

If Bethenny and her exercise video shtick does not remind me of Kathie Lee Gifford's patter in another place, time and modality, not to mention technological delivery mode--nothing does. To wit: www.amazon.com/Feel-Fit-Fabulous-Wor
ko
ut-VHS/dp/6303180019

I had done that one very sparingly. The VHS player I have does not work as well as its DVD function, which in turn; works even better on my laptop ...

That is great news, KAYOTIC ... you have no idea what playing "the mental game" could do, in cases where assiduous, lengthy practices move you just back and forth, as in a Maltese cross ... of course - at that time, I also had been "middle path-oriented" ... if I didn't "accomplish" something, I was fully of the belief that "accomplishments are non-accomplishments" .. that, you "get there"? Then, so what? There is always somewhere further to go--in how you get into a pose, stay in a pose, upmodifications of that pose, time held in that pose ...

And there is, also, the Dharma Mittra poster-boy approach.
But even that cat (in the spirit of mudita) says, "What one person in the sangha accomplishes, they are you--and you are that" ... Problem is only those yoga-bunny-snobs I ran into who sometimes could not conceive of the depth of that statement, only that "they 'did something I couldn't do' without paying up and going to Workshop A, B and C (for a price) to do it--and even, THEN, maybe" ...

My objective was to short-circuit that; MY BEST DEFENSE MECHANISM AGAINST THAT: Middle Path! Until I realized I'd needed an attitude adjustment, myself.

I did notice that my video of Feel Good Yoga Core Power (having been exceptionally underused prior to a couple days ago) is starting to deteriorate markedly over time, even being stored. It was pressed into DVD-R format--I think my only one like that--and really very high priced (price never going down by much @ any one time)

I have to be using it in higher rotation - well, at least it seems to oxygenate my system without needing use of the special scented candle ... to aid and abet the process via aromatherapy

Of course, my own mp3 file will be reviewed and updated, and it is very mindful in comparison [some vinyasa yoga slower and more physically strength-challenging and more mindful than others] ... decided I needed batteries for the mp3 voice recorder ...

Oh, and practiced-to ...

The secret of crow is finding your center of mass. It is a lot lower than you think.

Also warm up your wrists and shoulders.

Also mentally prepare yourself by doing happy baby variation. Seriously. Then get into child's pose, forehead (or more) on the floor. Hold these a number of breaths.

Crow is actually happy baby variation, done 180 degrees from the original.

If I keep MY pose very low slung, I can do almost 4 breaths (occasionally unweighted big toes are on the towel--but then I've big shoe size 9 1/2 feet with pretty inflexible ankles)

14/18 self-guided yoga, around 30 minutes? And started week 3 of the happiness challenge. This one is 9 minutes, and then there is another meditation video, so that made 11 minutes of meditation.

In the process, though, The Nameless (who they had spun off of) once, tried to threaten to sue me ...

Now, I further realized that Gumbylady is actually a snob (and she was good at hiding it all this time--the way the former owner was a different kind of snob/elitist and at first, ditto)... some people, when you talk to them ... they DON'T GRANT YOU SPACE ... (I don't know if you know what I mean, but I think you do-- the kind of people who jump down your throat and then turn a deaf ear to your already weakened protestations) ... such a pity, when she actually is a talented teacher who kept her mitts to herself regards adjustments (SO IMPORTANT to me in THAT harsh style, at THAT time!)...After talking to the owner of The Nameless II and also one of the people in charge of the last of the festivities, I realized that similar things were said to me from both venues, and somehow, I didn't get mad after hearing nearly identical things ...

I do not think I want to go back to The Nameless, not even for anything free ...

Probably don't have the time for it ...

Oh, I went just before it was slated to have its last exposition, an open house at The Nameless II which is in a neighborhood I frequented (used to be quite a bit more when my aunt had been alive) on weekends ... now, when they see me coming, they know they won't get much spare change out of my pockets ... I hadn't been back THERE in two and a half years and I'd even brought up how I was sick of their advertising strategy and how it was all in the service of upsales, etc, etc, etc, etc, making them almost deaf ...

So, they don't remember much about the bad stuff, but NOW when they see me coming and right away they want to tell me about low cost options (they are no longer the "affordable" place to the extent they'd tried to be). other than their own studio ...

I may actually give them a proletarian's soupcon of business ...

But, above all, word does get around; and like that whole bunch of spinoffs, etc. ... I'd never left town, and ... I HAVE THEM TRAINED!!

Well, even my Bayer requires 0.6 uL. I don't know how you do it.

Thank you for the vote of confidence on my mp3 session. First time doing yoga in 8 days. Adequate heat in my apartment. Took 84 minutes. Got my sweat on.

Not that I like sweat. But it is my barometer that - not so much the physical challenge, but (you knew you saw that coming, right?) that I have a studio-level, studio-quality, longer-than-class-length practice .. (yup, the classes are short here, too) ... a led practice by a teacher who was hopped up on Runa (or was it DD Iced tea? I forget) at the time of recording, after a long day's work plus commute, and was TAKIN' NO PRISONERS ...

and, yup, I couldn't keep up. Now, I would not pay damn $130 a month no obligation to renew for THAT ... !

Despite my medication (for a condition over the past nearly 8 years, having nothing to do with hating to sweat--which I have also, that's why I swam laps for 11 years until I got the geographically undesirable job and the caretaking responsbilities--during some of that time I did my own yoga-cardio fusion practice and hated the sweat there--My condition is the pain and incontinence the diabetes made worse),

But: I am neck & neck with CAROLJEAN ...

52 minutes of intense cardio Oriental dance = enough sweat for me ...

just like her yoga sessions with the Master every day ... clocking in at 50 or a little less ...

I hope I don't have to leave this team ...

After a couple days of skipping evening workouts (and I have a pretty sedentary job, nearly 100% of the time; not even a full lunch hour and a lengthy commute ... this season of my discontent (mild Seasonal Affective Disorder) is getting the better of me ... I managed to get myself nice and sweaty (in underheated apartment), but only with cardio belly dance fitness To wit, I modified nicely up--to the point my form suffered, SharQui Level 2 ... Uh, it was an unofficial SharQui Level 3 ... it took a great deal of mental energy to up-modify the presented choreography, but Oreet didn't "see me doing it" ... beads of sweat all over my brow ... under my armpits ... on my midriff, legs ...

Okay, it isn't yoga ...

@PUNCHIE, how tough-to-find are the test strips? Are they an arcane sort of brand?

Because, in my case, I reverted to my Bayer, when the Preexisting Condition Insurance Plan (the Federal preexisting condition bridge plan) would not cover the Freestyle (which I'd gotten free of extra charge, and their accompanying strips cost $5 copay IIRC from the heavily-State-subsidized NY Bridge Plan, for a few months until they were replaced by the Federal plan ...) .. The Federal plan covered the AccuChek which required more than 3 times the sample size ... no can do ... I'm not even shooting for the low numbers where a .1 mu-L would be easy to draw .... so I'd decided to order Bayer test strips off of Amazon ... the expiration dates are not very close-in on those (primarily overstock clearing-house strips) ... try Amazon ... about 1/4 to 1/3 the price of the drugstore ...

Why pay full price ... ?

TINIERTINA are you talking about this challenge? You know the challenge is with yourself, to reach the goal you set for the month. Hope you'll be able to do the blood work soon if you need it.
Today I did mine. Have to see the endocrinologist asap because I'm running out of strips and medicine and the company Express-Scripts, that manages my prescription drug benefits eliminated all the medicine and the strips that I use from the list of authorized medicine for diabetes. If I want them I have to pay full price, that unfortunately is to expensive for me. I wish I could win the lottery ...

Jan 17: 7/15 Back on your Mat, Yoga journal Jan magazine 2014, Andrea Ferreti, 15 min plus my own, cow/cat poses, seated forward bend, plow, bridge, cool down poses from Namaste Yoga and legs-up-the wall about 10 more min, total 25 min

Jan 17: 10/15 You have time, Wild Divine, 4 min and Real Success, Wild Divine, 4:41min. Both contain quotes to reflect on.....

Did the so hum meditation this morning....then a massage after work.

Tina, I think the point of the challenge is whatever you make it (for each of us). If you find you want to sweat in your yoga, and that's what the challenge means to you, go for it! If that's not what you want, then pick something else.

I just want to try to get in a certain number of practices in a month, and I find I'm better at getting them in when I participate in these challenges. They have pushed me over the months to try new practices, or repeat the same on over and over. It's all good... emoticon

awww, PUNCHIE, thanks ... I decided to postpone the tests by one week.

Also, I don't know what I am doing with any challenges. I don't know if the purpose of the challenge is to prove you can bring up a sweat with your yoga practice ... my apartment consistently now went cheap on the heat-providing ... again ...

This is weeks before I run out of the (ineffective) sweat-inhibiting drug ...

Well, the truth is my practice is not sweat inducing for a few reasons NOW, if not one then another ...

For interesting counterpoint:

In my case, of course, "sweat" = that "fat crying" or even (to be specific) those "toxins leaving the body", etc. is MY SPIN on that metaphor, subject to questioning ... and reflection...

Perhaps I should opt out of the challenge ... not too much to offer and inspire in the sweat-capability of my heated practice!

Less than one month supply remains of the less-effective drug ...

I know that I will miss most of my sweat pretty soon, I swapped out to an even stronger sweat-inhibiting prescription drug.

Incidentally, my doctor gives me a nice vote of confidence.

My ticker is STRONG!
No mention of my being underweight (probably mostly perceived as such by me ...)

But a deep and urgent concern about my bloodwork!!

It was a challenge to get to yoga this morning, but after the first few poses, I was so glad I was there. ... 45 minutes of Adamantine.

Missed posting last week.... however starting Sunday through Friday, practiced 2 x a day (about 135 minutes total), one 45 min. practice Saturday and one Sunday. Reason for not posting daily, completed my 500 hour registered yoga teacher training. An amazing week with 28 amazing people and 2 fabulous teachers.
Back on schedule today with my 5:30 AM 45 min. Adamantine yoga practice.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

10/18 started the morning with Happiness challenge meditation, week 2, so hum.

this afternoon I did another self-guided practice, nice long holds, restorative poses. My back was bothering me after my workout this morning, but felt fine in the yoga and feels fine now as well. I did ice it, it must have helped!

88 minutes my mp3 ... the apartment was finally at the temperature it was supposed to be for this HEATED practice ... about 83 degrees F ...

Was plenty difficult NOW ... the corework especially ... the ones taxing my calves (prominent motif in the practice) easier; and the backbend flows real easy ...

Sweating the proper amount (remember, I am on a sweat-inhibiting prescription drug!) ... beading up ... of course, I could not hold crow longer than 2 breath cycles at a time ...

Not gonna lie when I say, I see what all the shouting about hot vinyasa is about even in this hatha/vinyasa practice I do ...

51 minutes of the 57 minute "easier" cardio Bellydance (own choreography) to Bellydance Superstars VII [since the music is easier-paced, it has been in low rotation] ... trying to work into it... knees started howling (as did my neck ... my mp3 is hard on my neck ...

51 minutes of The Confidence Dance, I should say ...

I have to say, this practice -- this Change-effecting yoga practice --- has positively affected my dancing ...

Well, I couldn't get a washing machine.

And yesterday, for yoga practice, my apartment was ice-cold.

Not so bad, today ... and not so bad for my body (or my knees, either ...)

My usually cantankerous boss about early assessment of some of my project work: "Looking good !"

Ahhhahahahaaa ... I feel like doing the workout that gives me sustained confidence ... [too bad it isn't yoga ... particularly not now ... ]

Oh, last night, my left knee has to work harder because my right knee is swollen much of the time (but nowhere near as bad as it had been before my diabetes treatment)--now the left knee twinges ... delayed reaction to the demanding vinyasa practice I do ...

Hmmm ... no yoga practice for me tonight. Toying with doing easier cardio bellydance ... if I don't get to use a washing machine downstairs in the postage-stamp sized laundry room downstairs first ... lol ...

82 minutes - my entire practice on mp3, but slightly truncated due to time problems/a phone-call interruption (which actually AIDED my practice, when I'd resumed it -- although I had been headed in that direction when the call had come in ...) ... because the interruption had got me a little off the monkey-mind track, where pilates moves (accessible corework still makes its presence known in my sequence, of course!) fail to fully do so ...

In any case, I advanced a little further than a few days ago, without the monkey mind on my back ...

sometimes, it's amazing how much freedom and advancement and not striving to have middle path, but to be on a phenomenal rising path ... in fact - could happen, when a practice becomes circumscribed by one or more contraindications ... I mean, uddiyana bhanda, if overused, could also bring on a reflux attack with my stomach ... I mean, the body still wants to straighten arms (muscle memory and my self-sequenced movement-driven practice) and invert from crow pose (a level-hearted arm balance) into the beginnings of crane pose (an inversion in its own right); and I have to actually STOP myself and successfully fight that tendency--when your shoulders are even less flexible than your arms are strong - but you could finally, FINALLY balance and get "aloft" into that pose... (six and one half years in the making/I'm 59 years old--and yoga is a mental game, TOO) ...

I remember I'd started getting nascent pressure to my eyeballs 6 weeks before my official Jan. 13 diabetes diagnosis--back in Fall 2012 ... but I wasted NO time eschewing ALL inversions (never really liked them; and I think some yoga teachers succeeded in getting me to try the more challenging ones (primarily at home, natch!) loooong before I'd been ready... which, now that I am diseased ... uh, it's now ... NEVER! lol ...

For that reason, I fell in love with my Kripalu catalog for the very first time.

The catalog, not the travel plan.

I am not slated to get away ....

Glad you were able to get out today! I'm still wishing for snow....but understand when it gets to that level, it's not so much fun!

No yoga for me today, although I did get my meditation in (although I cut it a little short, it was still a little over 10 minutes worth). I pulled a muscle in my back doing the push/press, so I'm going to skip the yoga and just rest it.
