Whoa, this conversation has really prompted some thinking. I ended up realizing there is no one group, one type of person, one religion or spiritual tradition that can bring us peace. It will take all of us, as individuals, sharing our strengths, acknowledging our limitations, working together to find a world without war/violence as a solution to problems.

Good point! Thanks for sharing CAROLJEAN

My way of thinking is not because we are women we are going to be able to join and make the world a better place just like that, because unfortunately many women are pro the status quo, the mine versus yours, the tradition (although sometimes irrational) versus new opportunities of expression for women and children. We need men or women willing to change, brave enough to carry the torch of changing in their lives,in their communities....Like those ladies in Saudi Arabia who drove their cars against the interdiction of the authorities, and I wonder why many muslims ladies while living in the West turn with fanatism to wear the burka and the complete outfit of oppression that their male dominant societies impose on them.... so to E.M. Foster's quote

"I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars".

I would like to say: do you want to bet?

The grandfather told her she was already "good enough" to swim in the pool, but maybe the people in the pool weren't good enough to realize it.

Melba Patillio Beals at age 15, became a heroic symbol of civil rights as one of the first nine African-American students to integrate Central High School in Little Rock. What a brave group of people!!!

Maybe irrespective of being man or women what is needed to eliminate injustices in this world is brave people!!!!!

I'm curious what did the grandfather say to the asking girl?

Your response to the E.M Forster quote reminded me of a scene from a wonderful old TV series titled "I'll Fly Away." The series was set in the U.S. South just at the beginning of the civil rights movement. In a heartbreaking sequence, one little girl is being taught to swim by her grandfathers. She asks him,"When will I be good enough to go to the swimming pool?" In her autobiography describing her year as a student at Central High School in Little Rock, Melba Patillio Beals speaks of self respect being stolen a teaspoon at a time.

Interesting quotes!

Fromm must had been talking out of his own experience.

Amazing recognition of Washington to his mother, in times in which mothers were not acknowledge of much

Aristotle's views quite shallow for a great philosopher, which reflects the way women were seen in ancient Greece

E. M. Forster maybe is right: maybe because all the women leaders of the world : Indira Ghandi, Golda Meier, Margaret Tatcher, Angela Merkel, the current President of Brazil, the current President of Argentina, the former President of Chile, in their time have tried to accomplish something and still we are not very close to find the solution to the many issues humanity is facing... all mothers united who knows, why are still casts in India? why in Saudi Arabia and many of the muslim countries women are second rate citizen?...because many mothers in those countries don't teach their children otherwise....

4)The mother-child relationship is paradoxical and, in a sense, tragic. It requires the most intense love on the mother's side, yet this very love must help the child grow away from the mother, and to become fully independent.
Erich Fromm

I think this is the hardest thing about parenting. My kids are, mostly, still young and so very different. The oldest is extremely independent and doesn't need much nurturing from me to become her own person, but my second is constantly questioning himself. As a overly confident person, I can't wait until he becomes confident and independent, because I want him to BELIEVE how great he is without having to have someone else tell him.

I agree totally with E.M Forster. In fact Margaret Mead said something similar about once women of good will decide on a course of action, they are an implacable force.
I had to chuckle at the Aristotle quote just a bit.
Erich Fromm reminds me of the advice I heard when my children were young. Motherhood is the only job with the goal of ending the job.
