My first bout with REGULAR,FREQUENT yoga practice happened in early June 2007. I was self-practicing/self-teaching on the stretching area of New York Sports Club (had NO room to practice at "home" ... I had been living in a corner of my aunt's overly cluttered apartment, trying to get back on my feet; never getting a full night's sleep at any one point. It had been rapid-paced and there was a lot of what would now be known as non-weighted floor barre or dance calisthenics inside the practice. It was misaligned, but I had not known it. All my yoga influence had come from books, dvds, animations on the Internet, high school gym class (way back when), community centers of varying stripes, Richard Hittleman's 28 day yoga plan; and, reading Yoga Journal once every nine months or so ... plus my highly cardio influence.
And tough as h**l on my knees. I knew very well that my heart was getting stronger, as were my arms. I'd avoided inversions, then as now (but for vastly different reasons ...)
My yoga practice (graced and vastly improved by the influence of 6 New York City live brick-and-mortar studios; NOT being imparted to me by so much as closed-circuit television within) has reached what is known as (movie buff/screenwriter talk) "the Unity of Opposites" ....

And REALLY, i am desperately in need OF HEARING FROM STIFF, I MEAN STIFF people on this thread ...

I have experimented with both early morning and late afternoon practices. For me mornings work.... however. In the cold weather, I either take a warm shower first or now I have a seat warmer for my car and my body is warm when I arrive. Also my teacher keeps the studio warmer during the cold weather. In the warmer weather I have not problems with stiffness. What I do have trouble with in the late afternoon is bringing my day onto the mat with me. I have little to nothing on my mind and heart first thing in the AM, while by late PM, I may be toting quite a bit. Also, for me that last 8-10 minutes of my practice I spend in savasana and seated meditation which seems to set my day up in a very positive manner.

And THIS is exactly why I screwed up my knees following my mp3 (formulated during an evening...) -- it may not be the length of the practice ... and may be only tangentially the movement demands for the rest of the day.
I really do remember from five years back, when I'd last practiced yoga before work--I'd felt so damned tired before the full time workday even had begun (length of commute did not help much--the summer season - at that time, well before my diabetes diagnosis - HAD) ... the a.m. practice had been half the length of my average practice ... but it had been sun-salute-heavy ...
Chronic inflammation at my knees, causes them to hyperextend at the joints -- probably to make up for my hip inflexibility and my shoulder inflexibility at that time of day.
I do have a workaround bobblin' up in my brain ... (fewer sun salutations, and fewer compound corework moves ...) for the mornings ...

So, with all these benefits, what’s wrong with practicing in the morning? Well, I find that my body is so stiff in the morning that I can’t do half of the poses that I can do in the evening. My hips are tight, as well as my shoulders, back…everything really. This tightness is particularly noticeable when I try to do a pose like Eka Pada Koundinyasana II or even a simple Uttanasana. As a result, I feel that I am more likely to hurt or strain myself in a morning practice than in an evening practice when my body is more relaxed and limber.
