Stacy, hope the doc helps, that does not sound good!

5/18 most of Gentle Hatha #1 at the gym. I was almost done when my trainer showed up and needed to talk to me before class...just getting some membership stuff straight, then we foam rolled together!

No meditation, but this practice is fairly meditative, so it does calm my mind a bit.

Going back to the Dr on Wednesday. The pain is now radiating from the base of my neck through my right leg and right arm. I am pretty sure he will schedule an MRI. No Yoga until I get this figured out

3 and 4 of 18 for the month, I did Gentle Hatha #1 from yogadownload podcast Friday and Saturday. I like these gentle practices, holding the poses longer, and focusing on breathing.

I finished the Mantra meditation on Friday with day 22, the shaking, and tried out a downloaded meditation from Chopra's happiness program, from week one, sat chit ananda.

The adamantine practice is essentially a backdrop for the first minute of the show while Sheree (the host of the show) introduces the topics for that show. It will be on local cable in November sometime. Our teacher will be given a DVD of the show. I'll get a copy as soon as I can.
Yes, I am excited about the Iowa City Yoga Festival next week. Two whole days of yoga workshops and yoga vendors.

Additionally, insofar as I mentioned the sharing of downloads - maybe it's the wrong terminology to use - but I'm of the mind that I will purchase three downloads from myyogaonline ... my membership with them expired a long time ago, already and I do not intend to renew ... thus I would be sharing my practice through cyberspace... most likely Jiva/Anusara-inspired type of instructor influences ...

It is not my recording or recordings that I intend to share ... that is for now, private and totally my own ... there is quite a bit of spiritual and philosophical patter I stick in the recording right at the beginning and at the end/meditations' time... the rest is counting out time and alignment cues as if a broken record (when I get down to business --which is most of the mp3) ...

So, obviously for inspiration (as well as a professional's video recording)... I go to the styles infused with philosophy, etc.

I'm in no position to be judging this, but I am of the opinion that a baseline level of yoga asana competence OR a very advanced level of meditation competence will lead you to this "meditation in motion" ... it is sort of like (in the secular world, again ... I will trot this out) a flow state (coined by Mihalyi Cziksentmihalyi ...) ... to being able to feel it AS you are doing it (referring to yoga), and not only (and then, only if you have the right practice for YOU) an hour and a half later, after you're finished, while in the subway or at the park, or picking up the kids from school (whatever it is ...)

I had not - sorry to say - achieved a very advanced level of competence with meditation ... since I had allowed myself to become addicted to the meditation practice--for years ... a seminar leader had once told me that (as if I hadn't kind of known ...)

CAROLJEAN emoticon for the two compliments you received. From your posts it seems to me that your practice has grown and you reflect the achieved balance mind and body in your attitude. Thanks for the name of the book, it sounds intriguing, even more after reading the first pages in amazon. How was your experience doing the Adamantine series on tv? do you have a link to watch you? Are you ready for the Iowa Conference?

I'd told my yoga teacher The Great M once (teaches Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga sans heat) that there is no such thing as meditation while moving, imho.

Still don't think there is .. but opinion changed a little with decrease in weight and now better agility ... it is slightly possible now ...

It is hard to express in print what one hears in person. The comment my teacher made was not for "nailing" the pose.... which I didn't come close to doing.... just came close to doing the pose... it was a recognition that my attitude toward my practice is changing from aggressively attacking the practice to using it as a moving meditation.

What kind of practice is this that encourages nailing of poses?

The kind I don't subscribe to anymore.

Sounds like a closeted Ashtanga yogi to me.

... I seem to gravitate to Anusara-inspired Jivamuktoids in the online stuff ... I don't exactly know ... I've my own practice which is a lot like Yogaworks-ish stuff (if it's recorded ...) but I would share in a download or two ...

Oh, yeah ... I'm not too coordinated ... anyone reading my blogs from late 2012 could know this. Some of us don't get to graduate to the coordinated group, and we're fine with that. ..

Had two terrific compliments this week that I know all relate to my regular yoga practice. Ran into a friend I hadn't seen in some time. He commented, "At first, I didn't recognize you. You look so calm."
And yesterday my yoga teacher said, "After your handstands today, I think I have to transfer you from the uncoordinated group to the coordinated group." BTW, you need to know we have a very great relationship and he loves to hand me compliments dressed in irony.

Scratching my head about Tara Stiles, though ... it could very well be that she is marketing to the reality show enamored/attention-deficit-disordered/sens
ation-a-minute young millenials [and there are statistically more of THEM than there are of us Gen Jonesers/Boomers around these days] with the pose hype and the sideshows - but actually realizing that she is teaching to the real world ...unlike so many teachers I have had in the past ...

It's kind of the kissing cousin of believing in your own press ....

No such thing as "nailing" a pose. By now, I thought you had gotten the memo - that no one is ever finished. That there is no "there" there. That accomplishments are non-accomplishments.

Or maybe that's a little too Zen for your taste ...

Well, yoga, yoga fusion, dance or no ... I have come up with a manifesto: (This one has to do with studio yoga instructors and my history with them ...)

Perversely speaking, I am now thin enough (and chronically ill enough--the two go hand-in-hand in my case) to be taken seriously by yoga instructors, when I affirm that I intend to have a primarily home practice (which is comprehensive and longer-than-class-length). That medical expenses and scheduling problems constrain me from being the frequent/regular attendee at class. That I am entitled to be proud of my home yoga practice. That I am not expecting any "freebies" from yoga instructors. That what I do has no bearing on them.

On second thought, I think I've just had my last live studio yoga class two weeks ago. For a long time. Again. No more don't ask don't tell (about home practice) policy, since last spring, on my part.

And calling a truce.

Wonderful news CAROLJEAN! if there is a site for the news report post the link please!

STACY hope you neck will be ok soon, If there is pain something is not right, so maybe a
second visit to the doctor, will be a good thing. Also the screen in your computer is at the level it should be for your eyes? the chair you sit is at the right height for you and the table where the computer sits? My dd also had neck pain, her doctor pointed out how she stands, how she sits and how she looks at the screen in her computer, all 3 things added to her pain...

I don't see the problem with what BIGPOPAPUFF does with what you do TINIERTINA. Everyone is free to mix, or interpret his/her Yoga practice with other exercises including dance.
The thing is that everyone is achieving something important for his/her fitness and well being.

Oct 3: 3) day 22 Mantra Meditation, bonus practice, shaking the body and then listening to a very soothing music that incorporates the sound of waves from the ocean...

Carol that's wonderful news! Good luck and have fun!

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be

I guess I don't understand why what BIGPOPPA does and reports on here has any bearing on your participation in the challenge. Bow back in!
GSP was great this morning. Afterwards my teacher asked me to be his "demonstration" student tomorrow when a good friend who is a raw food dietician will be interviewing him for her local TV show!

unlike BIGPOPPA, I don't call anything I do that isn't yoga asana or pranayama as "yoga" ... so I have to bow out of the challenge ...

my mp3 file caused my tooshie to hurt a lot the next day, along with some lingering hamstring tightness (due to the pilates-style calisthenics strewn throughout) ..

don't exactly know why things (and different things each time) didn't hurt so much before I made my yoga practice a "presented", timed class-like version ...

so, I limbered up by walking (as in chores, shopping "fast" - have no time to blow my nose, so I have to non-dedicate or anti-dedicate my exercise time), and then doing a 5 rhythms practice for a half hour ...

Yep I went to the Dr in August. He prescribed a muscle relaxer, steroids and physical therapy. I've been doing the physical therapy but it really hasn't gotten any better. I'm not sure what else to do. I'm hoping that I don't have any bulging discs. It doesn't help matters any that with my new job I spend most of the day with my head down studying Excel spreadsheets. It puts quite the strain on the old neck!

STACY have you checked with your doctor? moving boxes, packing, unpacking is a hard job for the back and neck. Take care.

STACYR, you've got to be careful with that neck.. No dancing fast, flailing the neck about; and avoid any non-machine pilates (my guess, since I'd never done pilates machines); and avoid yoga that isn't gentle enough to where your neck is supported, kept long, kept upright and not having to hold your head too much on its own ...

I don't know what kind of yoga style that all is; but I've - off and on - had terrible neck issues since '10 ... does not thankfully affect my range of motion ... but I've dodge some major bullets on that score ...

This morning's practice included an opportunity to practice my yoga off the mat. As I left, a woman knocked angrily on my car window. Parking is limited where I practice because of some new construction and as a resident of the building, she was angry that she had to wait for a parking space. It 's amazing what happens to anger when you listen to the other person and acknowledge their issue. We agreed we will both be happier in mid-November when the construction is finished and more parking spaces will open up.

Whaddayawant?

I used to have to dance Gillian C's mini-workshop before each yoga practice ....
Now it "works" all by itself.

The only difference is: pranayama each time (can even be the simplest kind!)

In my case, pilates better be more than occasional ... I'd gone to a class and developed flu-like aches and pains ... and not much of it was in the "core", which obviously was cross-trained better ... so I will probably do the download and Yogialtees Level 3

[Except with Yogilates Level 3, I have to mash it up a little ... it had been one of those modularized DVDs with apex poses after each 20 to 40 minute segment - somethig lke that does not work for a 59 year old with mostly a flexible MIND!)

This is going to be an awesome month for me. In addition to my five guided self practices a week and one home practice over the weekends, I will be spending the second weekend @ the Iowa City Yoga Festival. Yoga 2-3 time both Saturday and Sunday!
I think, since last time I bought the mantra meditation, that I am going to repeat it and challenge myself to do the meditation as soon as I get home in the AM from yoga practice.

Since I was up to 17 in September, I'm going to push for 18 in October! This will be my yoga podcasts and DVD's on the weekend (going to try some of the longer practices then). I'm also going to go through some of the meditations I have on my computer and i-pod.

New month, new opportunities, new challenges. Let's decide our goal for our Yoga and Meditation practice.

Yoga is a personal journey to balance our bodies and our minds. The same goes for Meditation if you practice it.

Do we want them to grow? do we want to try a new pose? increase the length? the intensity?

Let's commit ourselves so we can be healthy, happy and at ease as a result of a balance body and mind.

Set your goal, number of practices to achieve, type of Yoga/Meditation, minimum length, experiences you would like to share. Inspire and Be Inspired!

Namaste! emoticon emoticon
