after cleaning up the remainder of the boxes and taking them back to storage - I have a clear space to do yoga in the living room! I did yoga yesterday with DH - we both felt better after!

I hope there is an October challenge - let's continue this!

Carol - so glad Scoots is doing better.

10/1 I did my mp3 file again - 82 minutes. I had not done it yesterday, as planned - because I was very, very sore from the pilates class taught to me by The Soulful Yogini about 30 hours previous to that evening .. my condition renders me an even lengthier recovery time ...

so I rested.

Traveling early today so I went to practice this afternoon. Just before I left, my sister heard from her husband that Scoots (their cat) is improving. She is getting IV feeding morning and night and is eating and keeping down food the vet puts in her mouth. All good signs. DBIL spent time with her this morning and she spent time in his lap....
Thanks so much for all your good wishes and help.

Of course, even with "cheating", I may barely meet a certain September challenge if it is to be a certain number ... I plan to do my recording tonight ... but I am needing intense cardio as soon as possible, as much as possible--next month! Time enough for yoga IF I'm lucky ... it may be pilates instead of some of the yoga! So, no challenge for me anymore ...

Congratulations to everyone who meets their challenges!

Much emoticon , cheers.

You know you aren't too "talented" in yoga if no matter how skinny you get (and I'm very skinny now) or how young you are (and I have childhood pictures of myself, if not memories) you cannot put your blade of ball of foot atop your upper thigh in seated position, etc. or have been nearly able to reach your head to the floor, and can't now ...(in wide legged forward bend) ...

Internally rotated hips ... and a student's knowledge of having such (by heredity--and how your bones are structured FROM BIRTH!) is the yoga teacher's best kept secret ... so that they could sell more smoke and mirrors to beginners who want to be poster boys and gals someday ...

But I came for the spirituality, and I stayed for the sprituality. Got those yoga teachers in a bit of a Mexican standoff ...

Ran into one such teacher, with whom I'd an argument about said smoke and mirrors; whereupon she'd summarily unfriended me on Facebook ... this had been a few years ago ...
Suddenly, her little yogic side business may not have been taking off; and she again is teaching around town. She ALSO wanted me to consider coming to her (newly set up) yoga class ...

[Of course, not a single mention of any weight changes on my part ... I don't credit her with either having liked me or having really remembered me -- except she DID remember my name with no prompting....]

Yes, I did go to my pilates class this morning.

The teacher loved having me there, thanked me for being there.

I believe my recording cross-trained me for that one, as well; although many kinds of studio mat pilates, it sure comes easily to me moreso than yoga ... although-- unlike with yoga--yin, Kundalini or hatha-- I have not ever taken pilates when I had been extremely obese and/or under 30 ... so I don't know how it would have felt. When young or very heavy.

Maybe about 5 minutes of this class was yoga-type movement ...

Sending positive, compassionate and healing energy to Scoots. I understand your sister, we have 12 y.o. miniature poodle, who has a collapsing trachea, if for any reason he gets an inflammation in his throat/trachea, he can barely breath and he spend a good deal of time at the vet's clinic, and so do we, soothing him, keeping him company... it is amazing how strong is the relationship between a person and his/her pet!

Just finished my morning practice and the next to last day of the mantra meditation. Please send all your positive energy towards Boquete, Panama. My sister lives there and is visiting with me right now. However, her husband is down in Panama taking care of their very sick beloved cat. Scoots has pancreatitis, won't eat and is now on an IV. The hope is the IV will maintain her until she improves enough to want to eat on her own. My sister and her husband have no children and their cats are very dear to them. For those of you with beloved pets, you can imagine her anguish at not being able to be with Scots and her husband. Thanks.

Thank you, PUNCHIELOUIE ...

Well, I'm letting you know in advance--if my challenge were 8 this month, I could not meet it. I do what I can do ...

The recording delivered sore abs again today (delayed-onset) ... Glad to have gotten the intense cardio in much earlier ... before the pain ... this is a practice with about a 7 minute savasana at the end, AND including mild pranayama ...

The Soulful Yogini has a much different persona when she teaches Pilates (but hints of the yogic diet guru had been in evidence during Pilates class--before I was either sure or knew she also taught yoga) ...so I bet this practice will positively affect Pilates the way it affected two dance sessions ... I'm going to make up some excuse as to why I can't also be attending her yoga class ... (although it's no big deal to her if I don't have excess cash ... she wants a LOT of yoga students... as I blogged, this definitely can do it ... In the immediate area, surrounding studios ditched all their Restorative and Gentle Yoga classes ... except for Tree of Life (but they were KNOWN for those - even in everything else offered being Advanced Beginner at their toughest (yes - even in 2010 my home sequence had been tougher than the class, minus the occasional curveball thrown in the The Cool Yogini) and really not close geographically to the others ...

Well, you know - I literally can't "dance" at two weddings at the same time. The very last day/class of my deeply discounted dance class pack (at a Studio that Will Not be Named), a certain Belly Dance teacher [I will call her "Ms. Vivacious"] conflicts with the time of The Soulful Yogini's Mat Pilates class ...

Hey, I suspect that the class I attend won't be so very crowded tomorrow, anyway ...

I'd been an inspiration to Ms. Vivacious whenever I'd showed up at her class, or so she'd told me ...

Well, I think it's time to be inspiring somebody else ...

@FITNESS_ELLE, Do you mean having other people around as in a (live yoga) class ? Or people on this message board?

At this juncture, I don't care if they pack 'em in over at the mat pilates class (it already was crowded for the small space back in the spring) ... that is where I will be ...

Thanks Punchlouie! That emoticon cheered me up today!

I am unpacking so many boxes from our move and today my back really hurts. I did a lot of cat/cow stretches, and forward fold so that seemed to help. Listened to Supreme love, I am really happy about this challenge, but I am still catching up.

I found a yoga studio. I emailed the instructor, who turns out to be a dude. I kind of wish I could find a woman-only studio, but maybe he will be ok. I don't know yet if the classes will fit into my work schedule either. Hopefully I can find a class that works, other people really inspire me.

@ CAROLJEAN, it was not all that much fun practicing to the recording. It kicked my butt ... a sequence already known, but tweaked for a "class feel", slowed a little in spots and done by a more energetic version of me ...

And in light of the fact of the loss of the latest yoga teacher ...it's not like she moved away. Truth is I just found out she will be teaching only one style, and THAT style is not what my yoga class with her had evolved to just 3 or so weeks ago ...So, I've got a nice long expiry on my class pack ... I do plan to migrate back to her Mat Pilates class in the immediate future ...

I blogged about it, too ...

For what it's worth, that mp3 recorder is suddenly one of the best, most timely investments in my home yoga practice to date ...

8th of ? ... What an experience to have been practicing yoga with my "teacher" being a more energetic version of me... (I'd been less tired from work and had slept more the night before I'd made the recording that evening a few nights ago ...)!

82 minutes S.E.A. change sequence, fully prerecorded ... I did not have to stop and think except to correct the "bloopers" on the mp3 file, in my head ... I had the luxury of MORE alignment cues, MORE stretchy transitions ... real motivational "right speech"--the works ...

I'd done not much better with professional audio downloads from doyogawithme.com or even yogadownload.com ... I had done quite well with Baron Baptiste's Yoga Bootcamp Box' 75-minute CD--but I'd also modified like crazy, for I hadn't been in proper shape for that one ... that guy Baptiste was a scream, and easy to follow... but - no matter - I'm not disappointed one bit ... BECAUSE Baptiste does not do much spirituality ... Dave Farmar (from yogadownload.com) was just like that, too - except he brought a lot of knowledge of chakras and energy lines to the otherwise too-mundane (to me) practice of Baptiste Power Yoga ...

And in real live classes, The Great M was the same way as Baptiste himself to a great extent ...

I am sure you will have a wonderful time creating and then using your "home" practice tape. I do my Adamantine practice once a week at home (on Saturdays) I can hear my teacher's voice in my head as I do the practice and it keeps me honest.
Today I did a full handstand (assisted) and felt rock solid.
P.S. Back is 98% better

Thank you FITNESS_ELLE and PUNCHIE.

Okay, last night I had masala bhangra class (intense low impact cardio dance workout); and it had been positively cross -trained to/affected by my making of the yoga practice recording two days previously. Sore abs-aftereffects and all

The mp3 I'm recording pushes me more than if I just think things to myself, doing lone self-practice; because in a way I'm breaking things down—getting all spontaneous, and "performing" (testing and transcending my limits) - all at the same time ... I don't doubt that even just "doing" the file would have quite the same effect, physically speaking. And, mentally, it would be just like doing a download or CD instructional recording. I could relax and be guided by the "teacher" ...

I think if a home practitioner knows what they're doing (I admit I had not exactly for the past nearly six years of regular primarily self-practice at home ..) and admits they want a workout AND a practice or something out of yoga and not just the physical - this includes chanting into a speaker and adding the usual teacher's patter - well, I'm going to try it (listening and doing instead of creating and doing this time) --- and wish me luck ...

I hope your back feels better, Carol! That is awesome that you teach! I volunteered through americorps at one point and I remembered the kids LOVED yoga. There was a teacher who came in once a week. I think it is wonderful that you are sharing yoga with everyone!

I missed a couple days, so I'm excited to catch up today.

Making your own recordings sounds like a good idea. That's great!

No, your putting your leg behind the head seems like very Type A to show off to the kids. Because, for all their so-called natural flexibility (kids are as unique as snowflakes - not all are flexible and take to yoga) that move is a Type A kind of move here on the East Coast .. then again, the kind of kids who are overscheduled may tend to be a parent-selected bunch ...

Not a Type A teacher - so, I guess in teaching these kids, you just miscalculated ...

I am noticing that lack of warm-up makes a difference. For my recording, I had to stint on warm-up ... could tell the difference in how I had trouble laughing without a sore core joining the fray ... and in The Soulful Yogini's class (by its design, truncated), ditto ...

I can't teach/present to save my life , and despite my family's cultural and geographical background, we'd missed getting the "teaching gene"(except I don't know how my sister did Day Care center ownership)... the only thing that had saved me as a Toastmasters member for nearly 7 years, was eventually finding my own voice - which always included a little bit of snark in my (of necessity) original presentations ...

Yes, Elle, I do teach yoga, primarily to the ends of the age spectrum. After teaching at risk teen for 20 years in the public schools, I have discovered a joy in teaching yoga to young ones.... 3-9 year olds and chair yoga in retirement homes. I teach 3 classes a week to young ones and one class a week to seniors. I also sub in other classes. The studio owner where I teach is wonderful at getting me "gigs" outside of the studio. For instance next month I will teach a four week session for tots and parents 4:30-5:00 PM after work at the child care center at Principal Financial Services here.
I enjoy teaching, but the main reason for doing it is to support my own yoga habit of 5 day a week studio and practice, teacher training and one yoga festival a year.
No, I am not a type A teacher. In fact I have had students leave when they found out I was subbing because I was "vigorous" enough in my teaching.

You one of those Type A yoga teachers?

Oh, yeah ... that's yet another reason I made my recording. Especially the 82 minute one. The 3min 50 second pranayama one is absolutely NO indication - it's a bit more stentorian.

So the reason is, I really need a NON-Type A yoga teacher that still kicks my butt (AND KNOWS PILATES), doesn't charge $18 a walk in ... and ... after all these years, what better than yours truly?

(Especially with my medical conditions - they certainly narrow the field of possible poses and enable agility in whatever I'm left with, beyond my wildest fantasies ...all I've got left of my signature belly - all my life I was the Bellyful of Brains - is a bunch of hanging skin - though I do sneak in two downdogs held for 10 (half breath cycle) breaths each (in mp3-recording-speak = a slow count of 8→a soupçon of that remaining Jivamukti influence I cannot shake...)

I still have The Soulful Yogini, bless her heart ... that young woman with the purple streak in her hair (sometimes gold) ... and will return ...

Tanpura sounds seem fascinating ...

For the longest time, I was using regular CDs packaged as "Yoga Music", which helped shape my practice phrasing (it had been too old-school in the sundial-pointed classical sun salutes, for example) ... but now that I have done the recording - using no music or ambient sounds (followable–but pretty bad production values; if there were such a consideration), I don't know if I'd need rhythmic music anymore. That music had been used primarily as a memory jogger, and had taken LOADS away from the integrity and effectiveness of my practice - minute for minute (sorry to say!)

My one constraint is that making my own practice recordings can be a strain. So, I don't intend to do them very frequently ...

I don't use music in the background anymore, but when I was using music with the metronome, I used a tanpura recording. Now I just use the metronome. It helps me focus on keeping my breath even and in tune with my movements.

One has to laugh, on my reviewing my audio file, I kept referring to urdhva mukha svanasana as "urdhva dhanurasana" (and forgetting to correct this in a split-second afterwards), and mispronouncing Sanskrit asana names ....

*I* know what my poses are supposed to be ... well, this is my first-ever teaching recording ... I am not using this to memorize my routine, but mostly for alignment, timing cues and motivational (affrimational) prompts and reminders ...

Another few things I could thank The Nameless Studio for:

(1) Their mass production of boot camp yoga classes which gave me the self-pedagogic technique, if not the style, per se [Their better teachers, including The Master Teacher, did that counting as timing business, too--just like the old school aerobics studios...]
(2) Their surfeit of inexperienced, young instructors who make bloopers at least as bad (though fewer)
(3) Their brazenness (I will rejoin Toastmasters International some time in the future) ....

I look forward to returning there tomorrow, God willing (for DANCE ... not yoga ) ...

Generated lots of heat in this morning's practice. Transverse lunge is really coming along. I love that I am becoming comfortable with millimeters of change instead of feeling as if I have to try beyond what my body really wants. Letting go of ego and aggression is the theme of my practice now.

My throat is raw now from exhorting into the recorder ... but my nasal passages are unusually clear (I did a few dry runs using the pranayam part of this practice) ...

Going to take a sugar-free throat drop or two, now ...

I think I feel what an actual yoga class leader can feel ... putting all my Toastmaster's training to the test ... of course, I am a lot less self-conscious than in those years, because I don't give a rat's a$$ anymore ... doing this alone helps .. but I detected throughout a lot less disturbance than usual beyond these paper-thin tenement-ish walls from my usually incredibly noisy neighbors ...

7th of ? [can't count the cardio I did in the interim ... contains negligible amounts of any yoga asana ... ]

Tonight, I practiced 84 minutes and 20 seconds, plus about another 3 minutes (that I did not have my mp3 voice recorder on) - I am cutting a record!

I made my own yoga instructional audio file ... in my own yoga-pilates fusion style. Instead of counting breaths, I just did counts (a holdover from calisthenics and aerobic dancing classes when I was in my 20s at a popular (and popularly priced) figure salon ... and I was addressing the royal "we" throughout ... my commute will take up the vast lion's share of my earphoning this session tomorrow (just like listening to an iPod, one "toy" I do not have ...)

KAYOTIC sorry to hear your instructor didn't come, fortunately you could use your time doing some exercise on your own! Have a nice day!

FITNESS_ELLE glad you heard of a yoga studio in the same town where you work and that your mats are arriving, sorry the towel didn't work. CAROLJEAN advise is good for slippery surfaces.

CAROLJEAN how nice tat your handstands are coming along. That is a difficult one, Congrats!

Our stuff gets here on Thursday! I can't wait! My yoga mats!! (I have a thick and a thin one ... sometimes my back vertebrae and knees get bothered by the hard surfaces.)

I used a beach towel on our vacation at the beach to do yoga on our balcony. I tried in the sand, but got too sandy.

I tried the towel on our hard wood floors in the apartment, but it was too slippery :(

Also, found out a friend of mine told me there is a yoga studio in the next town over - that's also where I work, so maybe I can start going!

Interesting FITNESS_ELLE, KAYOTIC and CAROLJEAN! listening to our body needs is the clue !

sometimes what we expect when reaching for a goal is not what we encounter when we reached it! expectations vs real feelings

The pose you mentioned FITNESS_ELLE looks like a move to plow pose or shoulder stand, it is not exactly a complete pose but a transition movement, IMHO. Hope your mat arrives soon. What about a towel?

Good to read about how all of us are using our practice to keep in touch with our bodies. This AM began the steps toward handstand. Still have trouble keeping my shoulders too far forward. Also was able to connect my hands on both sides in shoulder roll. It's amazing because I thought I would feel as if I had won a marathon. Instead just a deep feeling of connectedness!

13/15 I did evening wind down yet again (I love this practice...) after my run today, my knee is definitely better, I'm almost able to do the practice without thinking about my knee, I only have a bit of trouble with cobbler's pose and the knee bending that requires.

I did day 12, the Tibetan monks voices are so enchanting, they really draw you in with the vibrations and tones. I really enjoyed this one too, I feel lighter having listened to it.

If you want to create a rewarding sequence, start with standing poses, then seated, then twists and end in savasana.

Thanks Carol!

Punchilouie - Thanks for the link! Very helpful. The book Yoga Bible has a similar description of moves.

I'm doing mostly standing poses: downward dog, side angles, chair pose, eagle

FITNESS_ELLE what is the yoga bible? Yoga Journal has very good info to learn the poses and develop a home practice, if you are familiar with the poses. Attending a class with a certify instructor is always a good way to learn the poses right though.

"Begin Your Home Practice
Yoga is amazing—even if you only practice for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits. If you can do more than that, of course, you will reap more advantages.
If you're a beginner, try practicing two or three times a week, for an hour or an hour and a half each time. But if you can only do 20 minutes per session, that's fine too. Don't let time constraints or unrealistic goals be obstacles—do what you can, and don't worry about it. You will likely find that after awhile, your desire to practice expands naturally, and you will find yourself doing more and more.
Can't make it to the studio very often? Although experienced teachers are an invaluable tool for the beginner, it's a great idea to practice on your own once you understand the basics. Building a home practice will allow you to go at your own pace, work on poses you need to improve, and be in an environment where you feel safe and comfortable. Can't remember more than one or two poses? Perfect! Do what you know, and add to your home practice as your yoga repertoire grows from the time you spend in class." Yoga Journal, Sep 13

12/15 evening wind down again, will be heading off to find day 11 of the Mantra meditation, I was not able to do it yesterday...too much stress at work, and it's really thrown me off my game. Could not sleep at all last night either, I think I need this mantra!
