VISION_QUEST2, glad you had better news than expected!

CAROLJEAN swimming that was nice! Your muscles must have been wondering what was going on...

BIGPOPPAPUFF great month, your fusion is very interesting!

Well dear team members we arrived to the last day of June, hope you all have benefit from your Yoga /Meditation practice!

my personal balance I did not reach my goal in Yoga practice but yes in Meditation, June was a sad month for me, the unexpected passing of my cousin at 40 y.o., mindfulness has been very helpful.

it's probably still cardio ...

This is not my day off. I have to consider yoga more switch off than this.

I did 52 minutes cardio belly dance to Bellydance Superstars VII CD.
It got screwed up a little, though not due to the live class I'd attended.

By the way, as with Zumba which hatches many a dance instruction philosophy of cutting-edge pedagogy--not being totally facetious here--the price is now right, now that it is not taught in competition with belly dance classes offered in Manhattan. This would have been by professional performing dancers who want to start a dance troupe--it is instead now taught by an avocational belly dancer, and as a cardio, drill-intensive workout.

This is due much more to how I can kink myself up teaching myself yoga (as ever) ...

Well, the hips were trying to heal from having been overstretched ... and belly dance calls on hips being flexible ...

Sunday is always my "day off" yoga, instead I spent almost 90 minutes lazily swimming around my friend's pool as we caught up with each other.

" it is very difficult not to worry when one faces a problem..."

Well, at the eye doctor, I found out that I'm more out of the woods than I think I am ...

no testing for another 6 months, not 3 ... no evidence of glaucoma ... but I am considered "at risk" right now for developing it ...

The yellow flashes of light, well, for now ... it is just sensitivity to changes in blood pressure around the blood vessels around the eye ... they are not frequent enough yet nor lengthy enough in duration yet (pain is rarely indicated in a retinal tear, btw) for me to worry about it ...

I'm really kind of scared of going blind or something ... and, of course, it's gonna cost me plenty in out-of-pocket laboratory costs with the PCIP (which starts in July) to get to the bottom of whatever my eye problems could be ... they would have to test me no later than 3 months from now because the test tomorrow I know is lengthy, tiring and involved and can't be combined with the test for the retinopathy ...

BUT at least I think my weight is stabilizing at only 6 pounds underweight - extremely, extremely liberal estimate - (and 19 pounds lighter than my original all-time weight goal which has been since the year of the flood ..) ...

Hey Carol do you have any good recommendations for a good Kids Yoga DVD. I would like to start teaching my kids Yoga but I think they would do better if there was a DVD helping to guide them through.

Have one more week at work and then we move the middle of July. My house is a disaster so I just take my Yoga practice outside.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be

Beginners and advanced beginners who medically cannot do inversions, not even plough -- now I have to bring two - maybe 3 -- evidences of diabetic retinopathy to the attention of my eye doctor this weekend -- challenging poses are still not all crane pose, headstand, handstand or feathered peacock pose, FFFFYYYYYIIIII ...

In my particular yoga style, there are still available to some medically challenged, arm balances based on hip openers where you get to keep your head relatively level, there are bound poses, bound hip openers, regular crow pose, backbends (some cautions may be relevant here, but I'm still finding it out), advanced backbends and even one pose that would put pressure on your head (just be careful to hold briefly) classical setthu bandasana ... exciting world of challenging poses ....

I was so close to getting into crane for the first time .... in all 6 years of regular yoga practice ... and I'd had to give it up! (on my own advisement, of course)

Adaptation is the one thing that many yoga teachers don't want you to know about ... THESE days ... they'd have to really earn their pay, otherwise.

www.elephantjournal.com/2012/01/thes
e-
are-not-the-droids-you-are-looking-fR>or-ira-israel/

So, I beat them at their own game ... research, research, research ... and the right kind of classes. And even now, NOT the condescending "Boomer Yoga" ones ... I would rather take the kinds of classes *I* want, and not the ones they [mistakenly] think I'll find sooooo easy and non-challenging that I'll want to buy a truckload of classes of ... Of course I would find those classes easy. But I don't have the bankroll they're looking for.

And I hadn't gotten through a magnet science-oriented high school without calling on my powers of learning by osmosis (I am the best brain picker in the world! and a DIY-er)

Just two days ago, one of the kick-butt Open Level yoga teachers of a certain vegan-oriented style (at the place where I learn dance) wanted me to join her yoga class.

She has never actually seen HOW I move. I merely LOOK the part. Can you say, "halo effect" ... ?

I expect the judgment to stop the moment I or anyone else asks to take a class. I'd had about 25 pounds more on me, ONLY 25 pounds! and some yoga teachers advised me against taking Open Level yoga classes AT THAT TIME.

But I persisted anyway. Of course there were to be retaliatory consequences on their part, btw. That's why they got NOT ONE PENNY of my business for 2 years and 9 months after that ...

... sorry but I don't exactly learn that which I "could never conceive of doing" by just watching a video ... this HAD been before I won the membership to myyogaonline ... I have to see it in 3-D flesh, blood, beating heart ... even if they are attached to a greedy, scheming mind ...

The first thing out of my mouth to this young Dharma Mittra-style All Levels yoga teacher was, "I don't DO inversions. No plough, no downdog held for more than 10 seconds at a time ..."

Maybe visions of sugar plum coated private sessions danced out of her mind, but she still asked me to consider taking her class ... (pssssst, yoga classes there are MUCH MORE $$ in package form than the dance classes ...)

Though, technically it's still June, and I'm not a part of the June challenge, I can tell you a bit has changed in how I practice my yoga ....

I did a 5 minute walk
then 20 minutes cardio jazz dance. Playlist included Ai No Corrida and Push It Again the Remix ...
Then I seamlessly segued into 65 minutes of my own vinyasa yoga pilates fusion ... but no music for the yoga at all ... I was trying out the newest version (needed not to get caught up in my usual soaring tunes), was inspired by the sequencing experienced in Times Square ... Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman-Yee had us doing pigeon pose several different times (the same variation each time) and I decided it was worth doing pigeon during two parts of the sequence, like they did - but a different version each time - and all in all my newest version worked with synergy!

There is still SO much you can do even with all inversions being medically contraindicated due to my medical condition ...

I'm thisclose to getting into One-Legged Sage Koundinya Pose II on the side with the more open shoulder/ diagonally across from the side with the looser hip socket. It's got to be one part arm strength and two parts hip flexibility ... no biggie ... nobody wants to muscle into this pose, because to do so isn't worth it ... and could injure your groin, I'm sure ... and, also, I was able to snake my shoulders fully UNDER my legs for sleeping tortoise ... my legs are extremely slender now and my shoulders have never been more open ...

... emoticon 'cause I'm a dancer ... a dancer with answers ...

Count me in for the July challenge. I will eke out only 10 due to health reasons.
Ten fairly yin, vinyasa practices of varying stripes. Much of it will be my creation, S.E.A.change vinyasa-pilates fusion ... which is lengthy as hell ... I need the support.

And I'd been practicing at the Times Square Solstice 2013, so I've legit skin in the larger game, guys!

BAREFOOT-LISA, I live in New York City, and my bank account--especially now with Obamacare as my health insurance and my hours/pay having been cut--puts me in a similar commercialized yoga-sparse zone ...

In the land of puh-lenty!, with there being more yoga studios here than Starbucks ... now 7 venues within a 1/2 mile radius (and I don't live in Manhattan!) ...

A big HOWEVER, the number of Wine Bars is now catching up to the number of Starbucks ... may you see the eclipse happen, too should you wish!

Um, I work for a small, private biotech management company ... that does not mean you're 100% covered on your health insurance ...

Although I am not going to the yoga studio at 6AM, my body still wakes up and stays awake. I was never a morning person and I must say I love the sense of "extra" time it gives me. This morning, I started my "breath/brain" yoga at about the same time I would be at the studio and I arose from it refreshed and ready to start my day.
Back feels a bit better this morning...we will see how I feel after physical therapy.

emoticon Punchilouie for be warm peaceful welcome!

I did two days of Barkan & today I did Power yoga. Whenever I do you power yoga my body feels very relaxed like I had a massage. However the next day my neck hurts a little and my arms are tired out. So I do Barkan yoga. I think Power yoga makes use of upper body strength a lot and I'm not physically strong enough yet to take on Power yoga everyday.

But Barkan is great as it loosens my neck because it starts off with breathing techniques which uses arms/ribs and head/neck exercises :)

Power yoga seems to really help my knees. I have patellofemoral syndrome in that whenever I bent my knees it'd feel like my thigh bone and tendons and connective tissues were being rent from the knees.

Anyway I enjoy both forms of yoga.

Namaste,
Holly

Went to my regular guided self practice today. Teacher and I decided to remove front splits, widespread splits from my sequence until back clears up. I was very gentle and the practice felt so good. Teacher said he couldn't see anything in my movement to match my pain.
I'm in a quandry. PT, whom I respect, wants me to do NO yoga for a week. I decided to try some chiropractic treatment today and he said to do only gently yoga..... yet, I felt so good this morning after practice.

BAREFOOT-LISA, emoticon I'm also live in a rural area, fortunately in this era of internet there are many sites with good practices, obviously if you can attend some classes with a certified yoga instructor is great to learn the poses right. I drove to the next town to attend those classes, it was worth the effort. Meanwhile,on June 10 Yoga Journal site started a 21-day Yoga Challenge for beginners and intermediate level, check it out the link is in the second thread, as well as the meditation challenge Healing Rhythms. Both are free. You sign-up and they will send you the class of the day and you can review past sessions too.

Also check the Forum where there are links to many sites free or for a fee.

Glad to have you here! Inspire and be inspired! Namaste!

days 8 and 10 Compassion and Gratitude Healing Rhythms Meditation, putting yourself in other people's shoes, no that easy but worth the effort, gratitude feeling not for for I have now but for what I could have...interesting change of perspective

June 21: 10/21 Beginners equine Jason Crandell (day 12), 21-day Yoga Journal Challenge, one of the best sequences in this Challenge, good pace, good explanation from Jason, great breathing synchronized with the poses

Hi out there, i am not necessarily new to the site, but it's been over a year. I had some success with Weight Watchers, but then had some major upheaval in my life, and am now trying to lose what I gained back and then some!!
So, I thought I would get out there and say HI!

I am looking forward to learning from this group. I live in a rural area where yoga isn't exactly mainstream yet, so I just do basic videos at home. I have so far to go in my practice!

A good friend recommended I set up my metronome, lie on my mat and do my Adamantine sequence in my mind. It became one of the most successful meditations I have ever done and I felt terrific when I left my mat. So..... for the next few days... mind yoga!

Carol Jean, I have chronic left-side SI problems because of an old skiing injury. The best yoga person I've found on that issue (and others) is Roger Cole. He has done graduate work in physiology, has a Ph.D. in health psychology and is a very accomplished Iyengar yoga teacher. I rely on his insights a lot. I'm not suggesting instead of anything recommended by your MD or PT, but you might be interested in his advice for after rehab, as he gives advice on how to protect the si joint. Here's a link to an article on the si joint that he did for the Yoga Journal: http://www.yogajournal.com/for_teachers/10

It's good to be back home for a few days before I leave for 3 weeks in South Africa. I plan to mainly use my yoga podcasts during that time. Meanwhile, I'm getting in as many yoga classes as I can between now and Sunday afternoon. Going to a Hatha class in a little while.

I'm sorry, CarolJean, that must be frustrating! Take care of yourself.
I found yogayak on youtube yesterday so tried their beginning strength-building video. It may not have LOOKED like I was doing much, but my muscles were sure working! But it was still peaceful. Good start for a very busy day.

CAROLJEAN sorry to hear you have a more serious problem than expected, was it a consequence of the wheel pose? or just serendipity? Take care, enjoy the bed rest with a good book or a good film

day 7 Quiet your Inner Critic, Healing Rhythms Meditation.

“Forgiving is the ultimate source of peace, healing and inner happiness.”
-Nawang Khechog

This three days had been a challenge to my family and me, with the sudden death of my cousin,40, of a heart attack. This experience has been a lesson of what mindfulness mean, the present moment, no regrets from it was or for will be ... Life goes away in an instant...

DOLLYHOLLY Welcome to the Team and the monthly challenge, what you just said is the way I think about Yoga, a personal journey, not a competition to be best than the neighbor, life is short and we better live it to our own tune and not to what others impose, especially to balance our body and mind, which after all the goal of practicing Yoga and Meditation. Glad you are here with us to inspire and be inspired. emoticon

CAROLJEAN you're welcome, also hope accupressure will help and the twist poses. Take care.

BIGPOPPAPUFF hope you had a great time celebrating Father's Day with your son, excellent fusion as always. Have fun!

TECH1960PS glad to read your post again. Keep in touch! Yoga and meditation great!

KAYOTIC have a wonderful time camping! Enjoy!

My June Challenge is that I just recently started yoga again. I alternate between Barkan yoga and Power Yoga. I'm using videos currently because I love how Bryan Kest treats us an individuals, not machines, and the music is soothing and his words inspirational. He's my favorite video instructor.

I used to do group Bikram (hot yoga) in studios, but it became too much of a competition with practitioners fighting for the front room mirrors and constantly comparing themselves to each other and instructors focusing on how our poses should all look the same. I think that is the wrong way to approach yoga because we are each individuals with different body shapes and life experiences and abilities. So why should we all look the same in yoga poses?

Also, I became more stressed out AFTER the class practice and the push by my instructors for me to enter the Bikram yoga annual competitions at Bikram's compound.

Anyway, so here I am, beginning yoga again in the privacy of my own home. I want to regain focus and balance in my mental and physical states. And improve my flexibility and strength. I have a tendency to overdo things and I want to learn to relax and do things in moderation :)

Went to GSP (guided self practice) this morning. Told teacher about back muscle. Was advised to drop wheel for the week and do supine twists on each side (10 a side to a complete breath, holding the last one 5 breaths.) Did not want to stop on right side it felt so good.

Day 6 Inner Wisdom being mindful. VABUTSY I thought of you, it is a nice meditation going wishing good things to the people we love, to the people that is indifferent to us and those we have grudges with. By forgiving we free ourselves of resentment, our lives become more meaningful

CAROLJEAN take a rest, hope you'll feel better tomorrow. Sorry to hear you pulled a muscle, what about a epsom salts bath, I read that "soaking in a tub full of hot water with a few cups of Epsom salts was good for relaxing muscles and drawing toxins from the body, but I could never figure out why. And it wasn’t until I spent some time at the Epsom Salt Industry Council web site that I learned that epsom salts—made of the mineral magnesium sulfate—are also a sedative for the nervous system.

When magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin, such as in a bath, it draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous system, reduces swelling, relaxes muscles, is a natural emollient, exfoliator,

6/13 10/18 a so-so practice from the Gaiam Hulu channel, this was called "family yoga" not a good production at all, but I got in some sun-salutations, so I can live with it! Did day 4 of the meditation challenge. 6/14 11/18 a better practice from the Gaiam Hulu channel, a short practice, but better thought out and produced. I did day 5 of the meditation challenge in the evening.

Congratulations CAROLJEAN! Perseverance always work! emoticon

VABUTSY what an experience, Cultivate Positive Thoughts is a good attitude, life is short and regrets are not nice. To live in the present moment. Forgiving and forgetting are better options than the negative way to handle disappointments and anger... to say to the loves ones how much they are important to us, to feel good about oneself at the end of the day, it is IMHO,was is more valuable. Glad to hear Yoga and Meditation are helping you. Healing Rhythms Meditation is a good opportunity to learn to focus in inner strength, cultivate positive thoughts and acceptance of ourselves. May you be healthy, may you be happy, may you be at ease! Namaste! emoticon

Punchilouie, I am reading a fascinating book, called The Happiness Advantage, by a former psychology professor at Harvard, Shawn Achor. He summarizes and applies the decades of research in positive psychology but I think your three words pretty well summarizes a lot of what he is writing about: cultivate positive emotions. About a year ago, I had difficulties with two of my adult children that led to estrangement. After a few months of thinking about my hurt feelings, how callous and wrong my children were, imagining self-justifying conversations (I always won), I was disgusted with myself. I began to use yoga to think positive thoughts about my children. I would dedicate every practice to them and every time I caught myself in negative thoughts, I would stop and take deep breaths while thinking about what fine young adults they were and how much I loved them and they loved me. AND IT WORKED. My hurt and anger disappeared. I stopped feeling sorry for myself and was able to keep an open heart towards them. I have recently reconciled with one and it feels wonderful, but so does my comfort in letting the other one be, loving him quietly until he is ready to resume a relationship.

WOW! CarolJean, I am so impressed. I went up today and experienced EXACTLY what you had written about -- I suddenly couldn't breathe. It was a weird feeling. There I was, with my chest wide open but something about my position that I couldn't figure out was restricting my ability to inhale except in small sips. Very strange. Other than that, it was a very satisfying Hatha class. I was able to keep my breath and movement well coordinated throughout the class (with the single exception of in wheel).

Thanks for the reference to the YJ video. I will practice that this weekend. Today my teacher said, "I like where your practice is going. It's becoming very meditative." And, it is. I feel so energized and serene on my way home in the morning.

6/11 8/18 from Hulu, a gentle practice, yoga for weight loss, 6/12 9/18 a not-so-gentle practice from Hulu, with Kathryn Buddig, this was more a tutorial on poses, she included crow and headstand (I can only hold crow for seconds, but headstand I could stay in for quite some time...) Also did day 2 and 3 of the meditation program.

Yesterday, after a long day with work and personal challenges, I went to a 90 minute Hatha Flow class with one of my favorite teachers. I can't remember when I've been in a more difficult class. It was challenging and beautiful but I was so exhausted by the end of it that I felt cross-eyed. Then, later that night, I FEEL ASLEEP during my 15 minute meditation time. I think perhaps that is carrying the relaxation of mind and body a little too far.
Today I had another challenging class that was the perfect complement to yesterday: a 75 minute yin yoga class. I am really feeling it in my hips right now.
Despite having fallen asleep during meditation, I continue to feel it's good effects throughout my day. It truly does help me stop from the fast reaction. I am finding that I now pretty consistently stop and take a couple of deep breaths BEFORE tearing into someone.

Hope your luck turns around there Vabutsy... and I hope the yoga podcast did the trick!

6/10 7/18 I did a short practice off Hulu again, with Rodney Yee, total body power yoga. I was going to do the meditation after, but it hadn't been posted yet (this was early in the morning). I checked last night when I got home, and found it was posted, so I did the day 1 of the Chopra meditation challenge last night. Getting ready to yoga/meditation now....

Great yoga class yesterday morning but then last night I just could not get it together for the 15 minute meditation -- how pathetic is that. Left work early today to go to an advanced yoga class and then went to the wrong location -- so now I have to make up an hour of time at work without having had the pleasure of the yoga class. AND I have water in my basement because it won't stop raining here. As the old song goes, "If it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all." That's about how I'm feeling right now, so I'm going to put on one of my yoga podcasts and lose myself in yoga for a bit and then the meditation.

Went to the gym and did 30 minute on the treadmill and then did some weights. I did 2 10 minute meditations video challenges that I am doing with Yoga Journal and one with Chopra on how to relax the mind and spirit. This week I am being pushed to get things done in a short amount of time. These 2 meditation is needed. I did one this morning and the other one a few minutes ago. Love it.

Been so busy lately....

6/4,5,7,9 got in yoga each of those days, 3-6/18 for the month so far.

today we did our yoga in South Lake Tahoe, after a trail run at the lake, beautiful scenery, and the hip opening sequence was challenging and much needed!
