Heading to the park shortly for a walk with my son and dog. Then going to tackle that yoga exercise video for the core and another video that I did yesterday. It was a killer on me, my body feels it.

Did my regular GSP this morning. Some mornings it is harder to get up than others, but I never ever regret getting up and going to practice.
Private lesson with teacher this afternoon. Looking forward with joy and trepidation.

Did practice Monday AM in the motel room, was back to my regular early AM guided self practice yesterday and today. Tomorrow I am having a private session with my teacher.... he indicated we would be working on Sage 1 and 2, shoulder roll and kneeling dog. Should be a good session.

Monumental birthdays this weekend for you to celebrate, Punchie! How wonderful!

I did another bonus yoga for the month, I suppose I should just adjust my goal to 21, I'm at 20/18 for the month today, I did a Yoga Zone from Hulu, and hour of yoga for conditioning and stress relief. Nice practice, and longer than my usual. There was a long savasana at the end, very meditative.

I may easily have overestimated my body frame size for over 40 years.

I actually have a medium size frame. I would have been the classic Ed Jackowski "Escape Your Shape" Cone type, save for an extremely short-waistedness, rendering me an hourglass shape instead ...really barrel chested with skinny arms and legs. I take after my dad's side of the family in that way, too ...

that's one reason I put the numbers back in the ticker ... I am probably fewer than 10 pounds less than my "happy weight" ...

This also explains why all the extra walking I do, stopped working for me as cardio ... Just like that. A pity ... I still am not trying to lose weight, but I low-carb practically all the time now ...

Yoga class yesterday was cancelled on me, but I got to drag my yoga mat around that neighborhood, just like some yuppie as I went shopping afterward ... this studio supplies mats, but since I gotta go BAREFOOT - somehow the socks-allowed policy changed - and the actual studio floor is used as well (Shiva Rea Mandala Namaskar-inspired off-the-wall class that I wish had existed in that neighborhood years ago), this diabetic would cut her losses now ... with use of my PER Eco Aurorae mat for some of it ...

Have to say, I travel in style ...

5/25 19/18 did a Hulu Gaiam program Daily Yoga (this was core focused) with Rodney Yee. It felt familiar, so I think I may have this on DVD. Good core workout and yoga though.

I did get to Ballet-tone in the morning, and I'm sore today, even though it felt very easy. We're supposed to go mountain biking today, and Larry wants to scope out a possible climbing area. Wish me luck!

That is great!

Again, liked your blog on the Big Blog ...

Um, no Yoga challenge for me next month. My hours are being cut starting then; there'd be more time for yoga--but the stress threatens to kill me in my condition. So something hard on the heart but easy on the nerves

Belly dance doesn't count for a yoga challenge.

I first found out about HIPrana (yoga belly dance fusion) just yesterday ... but it looks likely that I would get nothing in the way of a class pack with this new teacher of mine ... and certainly no expensive, trendy, fusion classes ... dodged a bullet by not committing to classes (packs) as of yet ...

Day 22 of the Mantra Meditation, last session, very soothing music, definitely one of the best experiences of my journey in this life. Thanks CAROLJEAN for the sharing the link

I will start some vinyasa classes again (as I see fit - not frequently) because I have finally found my teacher. This is not an adjustment-free class, but the style is mild and the classes feel collegial.

5/22 18/18 did a short healing yoga from hulu/Gaiam this morning, and then did some on my own, sun salutation, pigeon pose, cat/cow. Also day 21 of the Mantra meditation challenge. I'd better get it in tomorrow, as I think day 22 will only be available through tomorrow...

Thanks for sharing your experience with the effects of diet on your life and practice. Right now I am avoiding wheat, barley and rye. Just as in my yoga practice, I have to begin from where I am and not attempt what would overwhelm me.

For the last 4 years I've kept my gluten intake very low to help with a systemic autoimmune problem I have. But 4 weeks ago I did a 3 week cleanse diet recommended by my chiropractor and I am totally amazed at the difference it has made in almost every aspect of my life: skin problems, sleep quality, joint flexibility, sinus problems. Definitely benefited my practice in several ways -- pranayama, focus and balance, and seemed to even improve opening of my hip joints. I've recommitted to avoiding grains including corn and excepting rice and quinoa hoping to continue to experience this better quality of life. I hope gluten free has positive benefits for you.

Had a great AM GSP Adamantine practice this morning. I am setting a goal of 2 weeks with little or no gluten to see what the impact is on my health and my practice.

My goals are 20 minutes of yoga and 15 minutes (at least) of meditation every morning. With the earlier sunrises, I've found it to be very energizing emoticon

5/16 13/18 another Hulu Gaiam practice in the morning before work, followed by day 18 of the meditation challenge.

5/17 14/18 detox flow yoga, also from Hulu/Gaiam this morning followed by day 19 of the meditation practice. Odd thing, this mantra today was "Om mani padme hum" which I had just been thinking about yesterday on my way to my massage. I was surprised it came up in the challenge today!

5/13 10/18 needed a restful yoga, so I found a restorative practice on hulu, using props, very nice, if short, and very restful. Suzanne Deason was the instructor. I followed that with day 14 of the meditation challenge, paying homage to the sage.

5/12 9/18 I did an hour from Yoga Zone on hulu, beginning yoga, as I'm really sore from my leg workout yesterday, I wanted something less strenuous, and longer.

did day 13 "happiness" from the 21 day meditation challenge, finally got it working after some technical difficulties, and I'm so glad I did. It's a nice one.

I have just begun to take a few meditation classes --- the instructor gives us different ways to begin and practice meditation. I have done it several times in class and seem to do best at the shorter times. I see a beautiful image and just watch it til it disappears. Need to begin making it part of my day.

Thank you again for the welcome. Namaste, Sammi emoticon

SAMMIHAT45 Welcome to the monthly Challenge, how lucky you are in having such a wonderful instructor.
I'm 62 going on 63 and love practicing Yoga, which I've been doing for about the last past 10 years to help me control my blood sugar level, improve my fitness and manage my stress level. I also include meditation in the mix. Check the thread for the Mantra Meditation, it's a beautiful 21-day challenge to get into Meditation (they still have day 11 and on).

Day 12: Perfecting wisdom, Mantra Meditation

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY EVERYONE!

Well said -- our yoga class is a nice mix of people from 40s to 70s --- our teacher is 60. She is fantastic. Always throws in something new each class and then just when you feel you have a pose just right she says --- now if you want to add to it...... She always gets us! Look forward to each class!

I lived in New York when I was a year old --- my grandparents had a deli somewhere in Manhatten. I remember the wonderful smells and sitting on my grandpa's shoulders.

Even though I had been introduced to yoga at age 16 in the New York City public school sub rosa by my P.E. teacher, I had never gotten interested in regular, frequent practice until I was 52 years old, 6 years ago. I fault the media and marketing efforts for taking what was essentially a practice for mature people in the 1970s and making it SEEM youth-friendly ... of course, new school practices and celebrity endorsements rounded out that picture ...

Mature people, disabled people, less-well-heeled people, curvy people, short people, interplanetary aliens ... have to take yoga back!

Good Morning Yoga Lovers --- I have been doing yoga now for 9 months. I go twice a week and totally love it. I had always wanted to try yoga, but was't sure 67 was a good age to start. After two classes I was hooked and love the way I feel after class. I am currently trying to get better at the Camel and Hero poses.

Have a wonderful day Yoga Sparklers, Sammi

5/10 7/18 Advanced yoga from Gaiam yoga on hulu. I tried to do day 12 of the meditation challenge, but I couldn't get the link to come up.

5/11 8/18 did a yoga for neck and shoulders on hulu, 33 minutes. a bit of a haphazard video, no real flow, it was more like snippets of things to try, but I did my own flow in between. Got day 12 to work, I like the monks chanting, very resonant voices.

I have managed to keep up with my practice even though we are traveling. Went to GSP yesterday before we left and got in a home practice today after we went ot see BIL and SIL's race horse.
Will practice tomorrow... usually a day off because of plane travel on Monday.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

The sequence included my favorite apex pose sub-sequence (there are three in my collection):
My second-favorite is the wheel pose (despite my philosophy*: and I am not as good at it,either.)

[one "breath" equals a full in/out breath cycle]

Lolasana (Pendant) Pose:

Navasana – 10 breaths
Virasana (with medium block) – 8 breaths
Ardha Supta Virasana– (with medium block) - 8 breaths
Marjaryasana – Cat-Cow (don't start in Cat) 8 breaths
Lolasana (with medium blocks under each hand) – 8 breaths

One hand on each block, if necessary, medium block (if necessary – do not use high block) ; wide stance with arms, as needed. Engage entire core, including upper core and lift (while leaning forward) while balancing on hands (or on hands on blocks)

Managed only 7 breaths.

-------------

*My Philosophy, for your edification, IS:

"Full realization is to hold whatever is hold-able, for no fewer than 8 or 10 breaths (to work up to, at this writing)

'YOU ARE NOT THIS BODY … INHABITING THIS BODY IN THIS LIFE …'

HOWEVER: S.E.A. Change subscribes to the Middle Path; and moderation in ALL things, including yoga asana (physical) yoga practice.

No law says you have to be in any apex pose for any length of time. No law says it has to be the full expression of that pose)

As with wine, good yoga does not happen before its time! And good yoga happens any time you remain mindful and strong – but still touching – your comfort zone. You must not push beyond the outer edge of your comfort zone; for such is a self-mortifying, harsh practice … and S.E.A. Change is NOT this kind of practice.

So, figure out which position along the path you could ever hold for a few breaths (no more than 6 to 8 full, SLOW, mindful breaths)"

Now, the rationale for the sub-sequence leading to the apex pose, is that in slow-flow .. I can say that for the past three years or so, I have not had normal reactions in my yoga practice. My circulation has been very poor; and I don't stay warmed-up.

I don't retain the "heat" or tapas (in Sanskrit) necessary, no matter how many salutations of all stripes (and some of them are lengthy) I do at the beginning, I need to prevent circulation shock, or higher susceptibility to engaging my reptilian brain, but continuing to stay relaxed and warmed-up in all moments leading up to the apex pose ...

Of course, this scenario would be quite different if I were not always rushing around to a sedentary lengthy commute to a sedentary job and back and forth from semi-sedentary caretaking duties, i.e. if I engaged in athletic activities all the time ...

... in addition,

I forgot how long I did half-shoulderstand at the end, I think it had been less than 10 full breath cycles ... pleased to report my neck had not hurt even without the blanket under shoulders ...

74 minute home slow flow vinyasa yoga practice (my own sequence), "age-appropriate" strength poses, a little influenced by my new yoga teacher (teaches regular vinyasa - I am not one for frequent-at-all yoga classes (due to the $ and time cost) but post-diabetes diagnosis, my frugality rules change ...

Need class for the supervision, not particularly for the guidance; as stated in another thread ... though I did finally meet up with a teacher who meets my fantasies and expectations about vinyasa yoga--does not try to pass off a Baptiste workout or a slow, harsh, classical practice as "vinyasa"--after over 120 yoga classes spanning a 4-1/2 year period ... no lie ...

Between the need for absolute room in which to practice (or low-impact aerobicize) which I don't get in my cozy studio apartment ... do not exactly lend themselves to practicing mandala namaskar (something new with these real vinyasa classes) or the Masala Bhangra workout ... and the need for guidance ...

When I get a chance I will post the apex sequence ...
My legs had been cramping up all night last night ...

5/9 6/18 sputtering along...yesterday was a no show for my yoga, slept in and had to get to work early...but today is a new day! Did a kundalini yoga from Gaiam yoga on Hulu called "energize", short but energetic! Also day 11 of the mantra meditation, very nice, I chanted along even though it was very long, and feel great, wonderful way to start the day.

Another good Adamantine practice this morning. For the first time in my life, I really understand the meaning and purpose of practice. Sometimes I guess I can be a little thick and slow.
