Tech, I started doing a guided self practice yoga class at 6 AM three months ago. Three months ago I was NOT a morning person. Now when the alarm goes, I'm out of bed, in my yoga clothes and out the door to class in about 10 minutes. I found I am getting more out of my monthly massages ( a treat I give myself) as I become more in tune with my body.
AND,it's a great way to start a day. This month I practiced 45 minutes of yoga for 26 days.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

This is the last day of the month. (Okay, I know that was an obvious statement.) I started reflected at the beginning of this month about the need to do more yoga practices/sessions. I wanted to start the day with sun salutations, which I think I did twice out of the whole month. I am now reflecting that I intend to do sun salutations, but that it just doesn't work into my morning routine. Therefore, instead of chiding myself, I've decided that I need to fit in yoga 2-3 times a week. Lately, I have been doing it 2 times a week, for an hour each time, so pushing myself to fit in another hour is something reasonable.
So for May, the goal is 1 hour x 3 times a week. Perhaps June will be more, and maybe even daily. Sometimes small steps are better than aiming too high and giving up.

4/29 18/18 stretching for flexibility from Yoga Zone, this was much needed after a lot of hiking this weekend! Also day 6 of the Deva and Mital challenge, a much more complicated mantra, with a lot of meaning, moving from darkness to light, from false to truth.

Tech, nice to explore the timing of your practice. I do enjoy an early morning practice myself, and recently found I could also practice in the evening when I got home (which I had previously talked myself out of!)

I started my morning at 530 with yoga, its the first time I have ever done yoga so early in the morning and I found the gentle stretch a soothing way to start my day. I think it's something I need to explore in depth to see what benefits I will gain. emoticon

4/28 17/18 Fat burning Yoga #2 from Yoga Zone/Hulu, and day 5 of the new 21 day challenge.

VQ, you can get good resistance training from everything from body weight to bands/tubing, dumbells, on up. It's good that you challenge yourself, I was just surprised by your earlier statement that you were feeling "weak" given all the work you do.

Good VISION_QUEST! I also forgot to mention why my choice was ADA diet. Our brain needs glucose to function, which is primarily obtained from carbs and eating complex carbs is good because it provides the glucose and the fiber that allows the former to last longer. The medicines incorporate the glucose into the cells to mimic what our bodies are suppose to do. Protein is needed for the muscle and fat for the muscle and brain. ADA"s diet is balance in carb/protein/fat to provide such nutritients

@KAYO, with the pilates portion of my yoga fusion practice--upping the number of reps is most effective ... I could even do that in less-advanced positions about 2/3rds of the time; other times, I have to make the angle at which I hold my legs (from a supine or seated position), sharper and thus more challenging ...

As time goes on, maybe add resistance bands (I've got resistance tubing which probably doesn't do much ...) ... I'm not advanced enough for that yet ...

I am feeling better about this now.

I spoke to my sister today long-distance and told her about this diet and the glucose management. She most certainly thinks that I am neither anorexic nor orthorexic NOW, but probably in light of recent developments, most particularly.

I also dance like a dream in dance-exercise class ... emoticon ... the teacher knows I don't miss a trick; and I support the other students (some have drifted in from just taking yoga classes - you know the young people of today, back here on the East Coast - and have just not learned how to deal with intense, high-energy cardio). I'm so vocal about things during class, and after. She knows I'm a bit of a loose cannon--and she more than just puts up with me ...

My weight is about 132, I never wanted to be down here; some of the weight loss happened involuntarily at first, from the higher weights/plateauing indefinitely probably brought about by insulin resistance ... but for 3 months now I've been doing a strict calorie-restricted South Beach mixed with sports nutrition. Such nutrition is 95% of my entire program ... it fits my personality and is probably not endorsed by the SparkPeople Diet (e.g., I go in and out of undressed iceberg lettuce binges ... and my diet lets me do that ...)

VISION_QUEST, I think something is not balance in your case, diet-meds-exercise-stress level, if you feel weak. I'm not thin, I'm 4'10" with a weight around 127-128, according to BMI charts I'm overweight. Actos one of the diabetes medicines is the culprit, my doctor also recommended me the Atkins diet more protein versus carb and fats, but I decided for the ADA diet, like here in SP, a balance diet of carb/protein/fat. I have to be careful with portions though, but I eat "normal food". Yoga/Meditation practice always bring me to a centered/focus attitude about my food/exercise/stress level. Take care talk to your doctor. my A1C is also 6.5 and has been for the years.

Great practices everyone!

From Yoga Zone, yoga for fat burning #1, and day 4 of the chanting meditation "I am Love". Nice focus on this one, it's really a wonderful experience.

Carol Jean, your morning sounded wondrous! I love those kind of days....

VisionQuest, I think feeling too thin, do you mean not strong? From the sound of it, you have lost a lot of weight recently, was that purposeful, or because of your illness? I just dieted down from around 135 to around 125 and feel great, I feel lighter, but in a good, strong, now-I-can-do-more way. It really improved my skiing this year for one. With your pilates I would think you'd still get the resistance to feel strong, but maybe you need some harder resistance training? Would that help you feel stronger? Your practice sounds invigorating though, keep it up!

15/18 (forgot where I was in my goal!)

Just realized I forgot to post on the 26th, I did the sunrise/sunset #2, that was 15/18, so this one was 16/18.

I did about 83 minutes S.E.A. Change vinyasa yoga/pilates fusion.

I really had to add more pilates exercise reps (for core/abs/lower body). My legs are too light now to have the old regimen and it do anything. Light arms - for me are relatively weaker arms. [I have those, too.] I added more slow and cantilevered poses ... around a peak pose that gets put into rotation with other peak poses - all because I lost some of my notes today - misplaced them, probably at work - and it worked ...

I actually used a sequence I never thought I would: navasana - balasana - ananda balasana and then bakasana--the peak pose (well, that last one was held, at most for one full in-out breath cycle, but I did try a couple times--at the corner wall with the architectural flourish, not on my main mat) ...

Home practice does kick my butt.

PUNCHIELOUIE, you are doing great!

If you did not have such a severe problem coming in to this condition; and you managed to never have been/or have been able, early-on, to get off diabetes medication--that is wonderful. More power to you!

Four or six years before you'd gotten diabetes, the CDC lowered the lowest diagnostic threshold for diabetes from fasting140 mg/dL to 125 mg/dL ... thus, under the OLD guidelines, throwing in a fudge-factor, throwing in adequate health insurance (which I did not have at the time), and throwing in much less effective weight management on my part--my goal weight may be a relatively "ginormous" 140 lbs - evidently, it seems I've "become" "medium framed" at my height of 5'4-1/4"

So, I also do not have a fat-phobic doctor [we ALL know how many U.S. doctors are prejudiced against the obese] I could have been (not saying YOU were) officially diagnosed as "pre-diabetic" ... if only for a few months ...

I had no A1C tests given until a few months after a diagnosis of 124 mg/dL fasting .. reached only ONCE. Then another test ... it had shot up over 70 points over that, and was supplemented with my first A1C test in maybe 10 years which had been 8.3... [probably since before I'd successfully managed my weight--perhaps in the very early-aughts!]

Now, it's down to 6.5 and my medication was not increased. But my weight whooshed downward; now, I'm nearly on Atkins FTW ...

Is is possible to feel like you're too thin?

I feel very frail ...

How interesting conversation is going on. My testimonial: I am a diabetic person since 2002. Yoga and Meditation have kept me going. Obviously a good control carbs and balance diet is essential for good number BS, and cholesterol numbers, but the joy of the Yoga and Meditation practice, the balance of body and mind, have helped me to focus in the present moment, to change what I needed to change and to make wiser choices. Daily walking is also part of my routine for a good control of diabetes. Yoga and Meditation are like the dessert.

4/24 14/18 From Yoga Zone on Hulu, Sunrise and Sunset, this one I'm presuming was sunrise, some beginning of sun salutation, and gentle flows, also chair pose and a little twisting. Did day 2 of the new meditation challenge, this one is chanting, Carol Jean mentioned, the Om Shanti Om, it's interesting to me how the vibrations can be felt in the body with the chanting, I'm curious to see how this one affects me vs the Chopra challenge where the mantra was silent. I think the vocalization focuses my mind more than silence. But then I also love to sing...

Going to be heading to the gym for some much needed exercising. And hope to end my workout day with some core yoga strengthening.

4/24 13/18 Yoga sculpting from Hulu, #2. Then day one of the meditation practice Carol Jean posted the link to in the 21 day challenge thread. It's just started for anyone that wants to join up, I did like the first one, very simple, but powerful meditation.

VisionQuest, I don't think you should stop posting to this thread, it's not about anything but posting our goals and challenged, and we learn from and can support each other. I think it's great that you found the bellydancing and are enjoying the yoga aspects you find in that practice.

BIGPOPPA, you are doing a wonderful job!

Water aerobics, hmmm.... I miss the pool greatly ...

one good thing about all the cardio I'm now doing is that much of the feeling of being relaxed and refreshed that I used to have after swimming, is back !

But it's really good that you do not have a blood sugar problem as well. I had never been diagnosed whatever the precursor is, to Type 2 Diabetes. As I have stated numerous times before to this team, long-term statin drug treatment helped engender this problem.

Also, having had an apple-shaped torso all my life (hypertrophic adiposity) and the symptom of not being able to know when I am "full" after eating, could also have been very early identifiers that I would one day be on diabetes meds ...

I hear you Vision_Quest2. Since I have started doing yoga regularly, not real long. My last blood check on my Cholesterol was done even though my dose went up last year, it was at an all time low. Me, I like to think it is the yoga and choices I have made with my eating that has done it. I can't be off of it because of hereditary in my family. But I feel better doing what I can with my yoga routines.

Belly dancing sounds good to me. I may try that Bollywood video listed on here today. Sounds like fun.

Maybe I should be off this thread ... if it isn't my own made-up routines, I keep gravitating to SharQui - The Bellydance Workout dvd, in heavy rotation ...
Think I will reach only about six practices this month ... sometimes my blood sugar testing points up to the fact that yoga was not made to solve a problem of my nature ...

My Lipitor dose (medical management ALSO of hereditary high blood cholesterol of 17 years' standing) was halved by my doctor.

Maybe there had been a belly dance fitness fanatic lurking under the skin of this yogini ...

Don't know what else to count... if it's practically all belly dance (or pilates, for that matter) I don't count it.

I remember another Earth Day 3 years ago, when I did a mashed-up version of Jonathan Urla's Yogilates 3 Advanced - Vinyasa Core dvd ... and its 87 minutes did not feel as good as this live class did last night ...

Including, but not limited to, the owner of the studio where I took the class; took the time to personally let me know (and you should know I am very much a LOW-VALUE customer of that place, probably spending about a 6th of their average client take) how much the teacher (she also taught me 8 classes of mat pilates over the last few months) appreciates and enjoys having me in the class ... none of the spiritual/holier-than-thou detachment (NOT NON-ATTACHMENT - there IS a difference) evident anywhere ... emoticon

... and this took place ... YES ... within the city limits of New York City ... it is possible ... or else, it is post-commercial-yoga-backlash ... I'll go with possible for the win!

Did my usual early AM Adamantine routine. Was ready to start all over again at the end. My teacher understood the feeling, but said whenever he has done the practice twice in a day, he is sore the next day and doesn't enjoy his practice.

emoticon Radiant. I am fairly new to Yoga as well. I have read a ton and watched a ton of videos too. I love the mediation part of it, along with the moves as well. I have depression and anxiety and feel the breathing and the movements help with it. I agree with CarolJean, we are listening to our bodies. Good Luck.

Taking it easy, meditating with light yoga moves along with cardio. My pulled bicep muscle is still sore.

Radiant, you will stick with yoga this time because you get it. It is about listening to your body and doing what you can do at this time. I have a practice I do with a teacher 5 days a week and at home one day a week. Recently my teacher told me I would see changes over months, not days or weeks. I can live with that... feel so good after my 6 am yoga today.

I also have to be constant to get to the finish line....

April 21: 6/10 AM, PM Yoga, AM segment about 20 including a good relaxation and some meditation, follow by Pilates and Tai Chi. I still need to do the complete Meditation though

Great practice KAYOTIC!

Great practice BIGPOPPAPUFF!

Glad to have you in the team RADIANT888! I also like dvd Yoga for Stress Relief with Barbara Benagh! It is said that it takes 21 days to create a new routine...the important thing in my opinion is to have fun and enjoy what we do, like a good Yoga practice is so goooooodddd!

I am such a beginner when it comes to yoga. I think I've begun yoga a good 50 times in my life. But this time it seems to be sticking. I don't go to a class, I just use the Barbara Benaugh Yoga for Stress Relief DVD - which I really like. She's very reassuring and here instructions are excellent.

The shift this time which is working for me is that I'm listening to my body more. Plus from somewhere I have found some faith that this will work - that it's OK if I can't do things straight off - that I'm doing what I can for now and that's the way towards improvement.

On my fitness campaign this time around I started with Pilates and I wasn't really bothering with the yoga - but then I tried a couple of DVDs and I'm hooked.

My posture is really bad and I have been very aware in recent times of how stiff I have become - so a gentle build up with Pilates and Yoga is perfect for me. I really need to get in to alignment before I start asking more of my body.

♥ღ♥ღ♥ღ I'm finally getting to know my body and giving it what it needs – everything is looking and feeling so much better and I love it ღ♥ღ♥ღ♥

GREAT PRACTICES EVERYONE!

APRIL 19: 5/10 Namaste Yoga, Extended Leg Balancing, 22 min, day 14 Body Mind Odyssey Chopra Meditation Challenge, 14 min. It feels great being back to the Yoga and Meditation practice. Amazingly the muscles were stiff because my last practice was 10 days ago. I have t to keep my practice more active.

Best wishes for a happy weekend!

I continue to go to my guided self practice on weekday mornings. I also do a home practice at least one weekend morning a week so I have 6 day of practice a week. My practice takes about 45-50 minutes. My teacher asked me to write down the suggestions he gives and read them through before I begin my practice. It really brings me to my mat.

KAYO, is YOGAmazing some blogger dude?

And the blogger dude offers a "feel good" practice?

I have given up following yoga blogs, except for one Tori of "Anytime Yoga" (a link I provided here in this team many, many moons ago) - and, of course, the amazing yogis who have blogs on Spark.

For one thing - I am back mock-arguing on Facebook.

4/18 9/18 halfway point, did another yoga podcast, called balancing flow #1, lots of balances, and interesting ones at that. We ended up in Sedona, and had a beautiful, clear day, if a bit on the chilly side, but the sun was out and warmed me up. Did about 10 minutes of meditation to my meditation music from my ipod. Followed by some mountain biking...

Visionquest, I don't know who did the yoga for a good mood one, but it was from YOGAmazing, if that helps. Just something I found on I-tunes.

I did not ditch all the inversions from my practice: I actually will still do half shoulderstand and ear-pressing pose; of course, most of the inversions are downward facing dog, repeatedly (technically a demi-inversion) and waterfall pose on a block ...

I did 85 minutes of yoga home self practice ...

It seems to be easier to do with 3 things: a new CD of yoga music (Yoga Moods 2), recent professional instruction (no matter how pared-down/to be made affordable, natch--(I take only a few classes a month, max ... I'm not spending $175 a month for classes I can't get to in any case)--it still is legitimate vinyasa instruction (note that this class in particular is given at the same time as The Yoga Teacher to the Future Yoga Rock Stars, a mere 2 blocks away at a different studio).. aaaaand ... somehow this recent weight drop ...

Actually, knowing that I need never go back to The Yoga Teacher to the Future Yoga Rock Stars for ANYTHING (back in the day, when I'd still - by the bare skin of my teeth - been cardiovascularly healthy enough to be able to benefit by an inversions workshop, I'd traveled into the City to an overpriced session with a rising star at the then-OM Yoga Studio, rather than take from The Yoga Teacher to the Future Yoga Rock Stars ... is a big motivator, right there ...

Hi everyone, great practices, hope you are having fun.
Here an interesting way to look at meditation, at least I think it is, and wanted to share it with you, it is the Yoga Journal:

Seeking Samadhi

The ability to focus all the mind's attention toward one thing is the foundation of dhyana or meditation—and is absolutely necessary if the practitioner is to reach the liberation of samadhi.

One way to understand the distinction between concentration and meditation is by using rain as an analogy. When rain starts, the moisture of clouds and fog (everyday awareness) coalesces into concentrated moisture and becomes distinct raindrops. These raindrops represent dharana—intermittent moments of focused attention. When the rain falls to earth and creates a river, the merging of the individual raindrops into one stream is like dhyana or meditation. The separate raindrops merge into one continuous flow, just as individual moments of dharana merge into the uninterrupted focus of meditation.

In English, we often use the word "meditate" to mean "to think," but in yoga, meditation is not thinking; instead, it is a deep sense of unity with an object or activity.

Yoga students are often taught to meditate by focusing on a mantra, on the breath, or perhaps on the image of a guru or great teacher. These practices are extremely difficult because it is the nature of the mind to jump around from idea to idea, from sensation to sensation. In fact, Swami Vivekananda called the mind "a drunken monkey" when he introduced meditation to the United States at the end of the nineteenth century.

Going to head to the gym for some cardio. Then have some yoga challenges set up to meet. Then need some heavy meditation.

Went to a vinyasa yoga class, in the pared-down format--the smallest new-school yoga class I have ever been to (two students and one teacher), it kind of felt a little bit like a private session.

I don't do private sessions or personal training sessions, have not for years.

Just before class, she brought out about the tragedy at the Boston Marathon, and how we have to acknowledge the collective grief we feel, let it go; and replenish our well in order to go on ... and to be a positive force in our communities ...

At the end of class, during savasana, she played a song I recognized as Morley's "Embrace"

really beautiful and evocative

Had a doctor's appointment. Going to do a walking video. Not sure how my yoga will be today. I have strained my bicep muscle at the gym this weekend. Going to do my best. I have done my meditation for the day. emoticon

Yesterday, in the mid-evening, I did over an hour of the video download Leilainia - Belly Dance Step by Step. A lot of the warm-up and cool-down moves were yoga in the Hemalayaa Behl style ... and it ended with a Namaste' ....

Again, I have to say ... as with vinyasa yoga--with weight off, this video - exceedingly fast-paced even for this Masala Bhangra live-class dance student--is nicely doable for a change ... and, through the back door, seems to trim my hips and glutes as well ... yoga butts being overrated and would be totally out of place on my body-style (now) with the chicken legs ...

Thanks for the info. There are no yoga classes in my area at all so I use dvds. I am still a beginner when it comes to yoga and I am happy with that. I like the yoga zone dvds and will try a Kabbalah and Kosher yoga one if I can find a supplier on line.
Thanks

@TECH1960PS, I just found out about Kosher Yoga not too far from where I work:

n-heights/kosher-yoga-finds-hundredsR>-of-devotees-hasidic-crown-heights

I've already tried Kabbalah Yoga via dvd, that's as close as I came to Jewish Yoga so far, although the Master Swami featured in my blogs has taught Jewish Yoga, though not when I was his student ... his satsangs are all Jewish themed meditations ...

Normally, tonight would have been a full length yoga session at home; but somehow dancing has taken its place. Well--you know--deskbound or traveling 10 hours a day ... leaves me little ability to benefit from yoga frequently--when managing my condition mandates frequent cardio.

And I will be getting my blood tested very soon.

emoticon Tech19600PS, I have not heard about a Christian based but sounds interesting. I will have research that or ask around.

Taking the moment this morning do some meditating and then doing Core Yoga 2 & 3. Then doing some workout videos. Have a busy day with taking my son to the allergist. Got to work all that in before I take him this afternoon.
