2/28 21/21, upper body practice from 15 min results yoga. No meditation today.

Vision Quest, I think I would do much better with those arm balances if I actually practiced and worked on them! Maybe I'll put some focus on that one of these days.

I successfully completed 20 60 min. sessions of Guided Self Practice yoga at 6:30 AM.... and I am NOT a morning person. This month of practice has been pivotal in my practice.

Hi, Kayotic ... !

Don't sweat the hands stands.

At the rate I'm going, I'd got not very far in that general category ...

I was doing a great crow the other day, but that was only because of Dave Farmar (Baptiste #4 off yogadownload) ... in the recent past, uncontrollable leg cramps have me falling out of an arm balance ......

Anyway, I'm on to the philosophy threads, so emoticon

One parting message--if you want to develop flexibility in your hips and upper body muscle endurance, I think belly dance and Zumba will get you there ...

As a former step aerobics maven (when my feet had been healthy), hip flexibility and upper body muscle endurance is one of the reasons why many people come to yoga ... step aerobics had done nothing of the sort for me along those lines ... and I'd lived and breathed it for years ...

Yes, I will go to a led yoga class in my style. I can't afford timewise to make it (and also, of course, home practice) a very frequent occurrence.

I was belly dancing (or Bollywood or freeform ecstatic) at home with one session per day, for about 37 days in a row--just trying to keep healthy. Those are my challenges. My heart literally feels "heavy" and the blood does not flow well in my legs if I don't move in that way.

I found cardio the most difficult to do for the first 3 weeks. Had not been used to it at all.

You could join me below in the "philosophy" or "quotes" sections if you'd like. I still have lots to create in my system ...

I feel that urgency, and will be wrestling with the "other side" of yoga.

I wish I could adequately describe my yoga practice. It is a practice I could do at home, however I do it with a deeply trusted teacher who created the sequence. The "classes" are called GSP... guided self practice. Once the modification of the full Adamantine sequence is learned in a few private sessions, a student joins GSP. Here students come in any time between 6 and 7 AM or 4:15 and 5:30 PM. Set up your mat and begin your practice. The teacher is there observing and assists or adjusts as needed. At the end of your practice, you have a quick evaluation with the teacher and are on your way. The entire practice takes me about an hour.

It is great what you have accomplished.

Yoga class attendance is no predictor of health outcomes, however.

In someone with better heredity however, home practice is a much better predictor of health outcomes that regular, even compulsive yoga studio attendance. I don't know if the Yoga Journal study factored in the need for cardiovascular fitness in those without hereditary hyperlipidemia, etc.; who might be screwed either way (i.e., a ticking heath morbidity time bomb).

For about 2 and a half years, my cardio training had gone south, in favor [with extremely limited leisure time] of developing a lengthy and comprehensive home practice.

I will complete my 20 yoga practice for February with my am practice tomorrow. Woo Hoo.
Here' what my orthopedic surgeon said at today's visit . First, background info .... ten years ago I broke my right leg, breaking both bones in the lower leg near the ankle in multiple places. Took 2 plates and 13 screws to put it back together. Was told eventually the distance between the leg bones and ankle would close, I would be in pain and have to have the ankle fused. According to my x-rays, I should be hobbling around and a prime candidate for ankle fusion surgery. Instead, Dr. Sullivan said that keeping active and flexible, I was doing myself a great service. He said to continue with the yoga that is giving you such great results. "Let your ankle tell you what you can and can't do. You obviously are doing the right things and know how to listen to your body."

A former owner who'd had it in for me from the first, left The Nameless and is no longer even a silent partner there. Left the yoga teaching field entirely for her first love--which has much more to do with Wall Street than a wall full of yantras ...

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

This has been for a year before I even had the guts to try to ask. As far as years go, it sure made MINE! I did not mince words as I told the business manager that, to her face. She obviously did not care to ask why. Perhaps I had not been the only one who had been 'touched' by that Queen Bee who'd played favorites, and had toadies and missed the politics of the finance world enough so that she brought it to the yoga studio with her ...

They don't teach only yoga. Never had, however, the yoga teachers' had been the only brains I'd picked for my home practice and the system I developed and had codified (and can mostly philosophize about now, since my health depends on cardio).

I will NEVER go back to The Nameless for yoga, since they had never really changed their yoga style, even were I to never have developed Type 2 diabetes and/or stole (from my caretaking duties) or otherwise had all the time in the world to augment my exercise with yoga practice.

They DO teach an Indian dance workout class there that I'm interested in. I have a feeling it is being taught by someone who had been a pilates teacher there ... I am sure her pilates background rather than the Indian cultural infusion means the more to me ...

I will go to a yoga class--elsewhere--but I am operating under the assumption that it is a mellow, throwback hatha class. (I'd had her for pilates, and her bio is not full of the trendoid styles at all). The system I developed, S.E.A. Change, is classic-infused slow-ish flow--middle path, and mild. But you already could have imagined that ...

Hi Punchilouie
For headstand I have been doing dolphin for some time to build my shoulder, back and arm strength. Only when I could hold that with ease for some time did my teacher even begin to say I was close to being able to think about doing headstand. She also had me and others in the class against the wall getting into the starting pose for headstand against a wall (with hands clasped and head resting there as in a nest). Only when we could move our feet close enough so that our backs were more or less flat against the wall did she say we might be ready and could go up if we felt comfortable. One day I just did feel comfortable and it was easy. All the core work in yoga generally is of course essential to both headstand and crow (in headstand have to use your core to be able to lift your legs in a controlled way). With crow, buddha squats help prep - and then getting in to the position with feet on the ground and just lifting one leg at a time until it seemed natural Most important thing that I found is sort of risining from the squat as if flying when lifting up the legs...Can't describe it very well. Hope that answers you Punchilouie?

The last two days I have done A.M. yoga. It's a pretty good dvd but I'm getting kind of bored with it. I guess it's time to break out another dvd.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be

answering question about how long I have done yoga for.... On and off (but more off) for about 10 years. My mother did yoga and so as children we copied her sort of (more laughing and giggling and showing off how we could do these things so easily before skipping off into games). But I have been doing it seriously now - for an hour and a half at least two times a week for about a year. I also do something called zen pilates which has strengthened my core and shoulders further. The important thing to me is doing things slowly. And resting when I need to. Focusing on form rather than the end posture.
There is nothing better than the feeling of knowing you are ready to take it further and achieving it.

My personal challenge was to focus on doing poses slowly and with control - really getting in to those stretches and thinking through some of the harder poses. So far this has helped me a great deal.
I have gone in to a head stand for the first time (against a wall - but overcame my fear and went up slowly with my head and neck completely relaxed). And this morning I slowly went in to crow for about 3 seconds...Am sure will hold crow by the end of Feb.
Next challenge is to be able to float through.... Might take till the end of the year.

2/16 14/21 Yoga Burn with Rodney Yee, 55 minutes. This one really makes me feel flexible, I can get into positions I can't with shorter, faster practices. Not sure how he does it! Did 11 min meditation app afterward.

BBW, I'll be curious to see how you like the practices from your book, I've been doing DVD's or podcasts for my practices, have never tried from a book, although I know it works for some folks. Let us know how you like it! emoticon

No yoga for me today. Or meditation, maybe tomorrow, although I'll be going to work, so who knows? I will definitely practice again on Thursday though!

Thanks for the encouragement, Punchie, it was a great challenge, I would buy it, it think, if they go that route!

2/11 11/21 Did the restorative yoga from week 3, then the mudra yoga, to end the challenge. I'm glad I did it, and proud that I was able to do it daily, and found that I can practice later in the day as well (I knew I could, I just never really did!) Also did the meditation, it's so rewarding to do this practice daily, I will miss this challenge!
