I may, at the beginning of March, break my year and a half long fast from attending a live studio class in yoga.

The irony is that it will be at the pilates studio.

The couple who own the pilates studio found they were sitting on multiple gold mines--most literally, the non-athletic yoga practitioner and the gym rat type of pilates addict--so underserved in a wannabe neighborhood that thinks it's hip ... and attracts young people ... but retains (and attracts, for shopping purposes) us boomers, too

But young people are not all the same ....

I love the idea of "trying easy." It is exactly the concept I have been trying to articulate in my practice.

My yoga teacher encourages us to 'try easy' not to 'try hard'. I put a great deal of intention, awareness, and effort into the individual asanas and the entire practice. I try not to let it be a practice of willfulness whilst holding my breath. Perhaps that is what he means by 'trying easy'.

And since I used to be a step aerobicizer before my feet "went bad", branching out into belly dance and Bollywood dance; as well as classes in 5 Rhythms and classical pilates (and toying with the idea of doing the Masala Bhangra workout)--branching out from formerly just doing yoga (and on frequent occasions, walking--and I can hardly walk fast)--has really kept me doing yoga ...

even to the point of affecting my sequence ..

so, either way, you could either work within yoga or work on related movement disciplines

I love that idea of "how you stay determined." My yoga teacher said he has noticed a change in my practice... I don't seem to be "trying" as hard. I know what he means... I used to be determined to get into the perfect pose, now I am determined to practice yoga.

It's actually a yoga-pilates fusion class. Too bad I am usually still at work (well over one hour's commute away from that studio, near my home) at that very time that she teaches. Still no reason to try THIS guy's class out.

Believe me, his cynicism does not turn me off. Consider that I have been rendered more cynical than I need to be by my yoga experiences in 2008-2011! I have seen this guy's comments and blogs on elephantjournal.com. I actually like this blogger (and he writes like a dream).

But I disagree with him to the extent that I say: It's not a question of never giving up on yoga--how you stay determines that you will never give UP on yoga!

This type of hype is such a conundrum for me. Yes, I believe yoga can help lots of people with lots of problems, physical and emotional. However, this sort of hype seems just that... hype... that which can make cynics of us all.
Cynicism is not yogic!

This yoga guy with a blog teaches yoga fewer than 2 miles from where I live. I never took his class because of two reasons: (1) Schedule clashes (obviously), (2) Come on, after nearly a year totally studio-less at the time, I started to take pilates fairly frequently at a competing studio [and they SOON will be teaching Stress-Relief Yoga, as well--THEIR FIRST-EVER YOGA CLASS!--I even had the teacher of THAT yoga—for pilates class ..]

"In fact I have never heard of a yoga student being turned away by a studio – referred to a different class, yes, but not turned down cold. So I think Diamond Dallas and Arthur need to tell us just who these yoga teachers are. I’m also skeptical because Arthur tells the story this way as well: “I was up late , I was on search engine, just typing in different things and I typed in ‘yoga’ and ‘broken back’ and up popped Dallas Page.” So is this how he nonchalantly kept looking for guidance after all the teachers turned him away, or was he connected to DDP before he sought these other teachers out?"

In short ... so interesting that the DDP Arthur "Never Give Up" movie has its detractors ...

But I for one, give Kudos to the man (or woman) who relies on home practice to get them exactly where they want to go ...
