You should enjoy the fitness challenge then, some of the practices repeat, the Cardio yoga is done 4 or 5 times (there are 2 different ones, and both repeat through the weeks). The toning practices are good ones.

This is the first time I have heard of Yoga journal challenge. I am checking it out as although I do practice yoga regularly, I don't consistantly. I could use the motivation for a more regular practice. Looking for toning and strength building.

I can only change what I am willing to acknowledge

We got home yesterday afternoon, and did a very rewarding, but difficult hike on Friday, so I just did some restorative yoga in the afternoon.

I may postpone the last week of the fitness challenge, in favor of the detox challenge, and go back to the fitness challenge when that's done.

Tonight is Yoga class which I am very excited about since it's been at least a week since I've been able to practice.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be

In Yoga Journal today:

"So when you apply nonviolence and truthfulness to your practice—avoiding poses that don't feel right or that might cause injury—you eventually reach a place of freedom".

Love it and wanted to share it with you all!

I have missed Monday and Wednesday as well as upper body practice last week. I'll do them when I'll feel more at ease with the practices. Yesterday I did Core Practice(week 3, day 2), and 6 min of restorative yoga at the end.

I have the Candlelight Yoga w/ Sarah Ivanhoe, it was one of the first yoga DVD's I got, and I still use it every so often, it is a good one.

I'm postponing the YJ fitness challenge until we go home, I am having trouble with the videos on the hotel wifi, so I figure my ipod is a better choice for now! We're out of here on Friday, so it won't be too much of a postponement.

SAFIYAH9 good that you listened to your body. Here are two links the first one is a dvd by the Mayo Clinic, it has mixed revues, so If you could watch before buying to find out if it's good for you. It has a 40 min with Rodney Yee yoga practice designed for people with fibromyalgia. I got the one for diabetes, and I found the yoga practice with Rodney very good. Also, in the second review, the person suggested the Crunch Candlelight Yoga with Sara Ivanhoe, I know that this is a very good soothing practice. Just ideas.
In the 21-day Yoga Journal beginners level, the instructors guide the practice and the pace is
good.

KAYOTIC I did the restorative practice, it's 34 min. It uses a lot of props, to me they were too many, because I prefer lying in the bare mat,so I modified to my taste. It was soothing and relaxing practice the voice over is ok.

I did day 13 yesterday, and skipped day 12 (a repeat). Day 13 was actually a repeat of day 6, the "relaxing" practice, which I thought would be better after my hike, than the cardio.

I saw that day 14 was a rest day, but they suggested a restorative practice, and had a link to a longer restorative practice. I didn't try it, but was wondering if any of you had?

I have fibromyalgia, so any repetitive motion can cause a flare, especially when I haven't built up a muscle base. So if I'm not careful, this could end up causing me a LOT more pain than necessary. Epsom Salts are my friend.

So I may check out the beginner one. I know that Yoga Journal has their 3 DVD step by step yoga plan, I love that one but fell out of practice.

Now I gotta start all over. I do prefer actual yoga over the repetitive routines, but I can also see where building a strength base would help you with the routines later. I just wish they would have come up with a routine that wasn't so much like a skipping record. (I just dated myself, didn't I?)

Thank you for the kind words!!!

SAFIYAH9 I know what you mean! when I started the Fitness Challenge not the 21-dayYoga Challenge I felt the same way! The second time I tried it was better, the third time much better. I most tell you, the level for the Fitness Challenge is more an intermediate level so if you lasted 5 min that was GREAT! I lasted about the same time and at the end of the week after three attempts my shoulders were so so tired, that I had a couple of day with restorative yoga only.

I would take it easy, if I were you, do what I can, do it for a couple of times and go at my own pace. Also you have the choice of the 21-day Yoga Challenge beginner or intermediate level, which is far more diverse and interesting as Yoga practice than the Fitness Challenge, which in fact, is more a cardio or like KAYOTIC said "the clue word is Fitness" not Yoga.

Watch the whole practice before attempting it, that will give you sense of the pace and degree of difficulty. I noticed that it s harder to keep repeating the same vinyasa,i.e. plank, upward, downward dog, than when there is a flow, like the whole sun salutation done once from beginning to end. I definitely prefer the latter.

Take your time, respect your body and choose what is good for you at this specific moment. The more you'll do it the easier it will come. Remember, practice makes perfect.

I just did the upper body practice today, it really is more of a fitness focus than a yoga focus, which actually is good for me right now, since I've been so busy I haven't had the time for my resistance training, at least I did this! Still trying to catch up though...

KAYOTIC, you are right, now that I think of that, the word fitness is the clue.as you said. I'm glad you are finding the practices useful. In my case, I was expecting "lemon sherbet" and got strawberry sherbet". Now that I know what to expect, I'm looking forward to week three. The silver lining my yoga practice got a shake.....lol!

I know what you mean, Punchie, it seemed like there was more variety and more of a yoga focus with the 21 day yoga challenge. Maybe the "fitness" part of the title should have been a clue! I like the practices, but it feels less yoga-like than the first challenge. I'm up to day 9 now, so have done the cardio and core focus. Lots of crunches, but I actually liked that, since I've been so busy with getting the house back together after the painting, I haven't done my usual resistance training, so that was a good addition for me!

Today and Monday same practice, more of flow than holding poses. www.yogajournal.com/fitnesschallenge

Yesterday it was more a many crunches than a Yoga practice so I add my own sequence, warrior 1 and 2,triangle and reverse triangle, side angle, forward bend, chair pose, extended leg forward bend.

I definitely like the other Yoga Challenge more, Jason Crandell was super ....

JURASSICSUE glad you found the 21-day Yoga Journal appropriate for your present needs.

SAFIYAH9 emoticon , below you will find the link to the 21-day Yoga Journal Challenge, which offers beginner and intermediate level, if you would like to start with this practice. You click the link and then go to the first class click there and in your screen it will appear the Yoga practice for that day, and the meditation too.

The Fitness Challenge is not for beginners and is not really good, IMHO. Check all the links in the Forum, here or in the monthly challenge. Glad you joined. Also you can check in the INFO FORUM there a plenty of links.

STACYR31 good combination, have you tried this challenge? what's your opinion?

KAYOTIC sorry to hear you had trouble with your internet, today was like Monday practice and yesterday crunches, not really what I expected. Like you I prefer the 21-day Yoga Journal Challenge.

PUNCHILOUIE I'm so glad you posted a link to the other Yoga Journal 21-day sequence. I've found it to be much more suited to me as I've been out of practice for a couple of years now so am currently at beginner level in terms of flexibility and endurance. The first session, just a simple 15-minute practice, was just right and I'm looking forward to following the rest of the programme, rather than the Fitness Challenge.

I did day 5 today, a repeat of 1 and 3, like you said, Punchie. I didn't mind the repetition, I know on day one, I had a harder time with it, and ended up sweating much more....not sure why, but it felt easier today, although I did have to pause the practice during the first sun salutation to close the window when the wind picked up! I peeked at tomorrows practice, and it looks like a more meditative one, and then day 7 is a rest day.

I did like the variety of the 21 day challenge, in both the beginner and intermediate, there wasn't as much repetition in those, even though they did repeat some of the practices, just not 3 times in the same week, and there were more different instructors. It will be interesting to see how next week looks.

KAYOTIC yes savasana after all the repetitions is just heaven. Have you noticed that she starts the cool down with savasana and then continues with other poses, contrary to other instructors?

Today is the same cardio of day 1 and 3, yesterday day 4 was kind of a repetition of a vinyasa found in the cardio practice. In my opinion the other Challenge was more interesting. Just my opinion....
www.yogajournal.com/fitnesschallenge

eekone_5.html

I did the practice at my own pace and without too many repetitions, at the end of the 21 min my heart rate was up and I was sweating, I did the cool down with her starting with savasana, bridge, seated forward bend and the other poses, ending with savasana. My shoulders and arms are burning. Hopefully tomorrow will be something different, basically is Salutation A and B with the vinyasa downward dog, plank, chaturanga, upward dog, downward dog...

JURASSICSUE, in Day 1,3 and 5 the Yoga practice is the same a vigorous one. Day 2 is a Core Focus practice and Day 4 is an Upper Body practice. In the latter the instructor uses over and over again, a vinyasa that is in the cardio practice(day 1,3,5) .So in reality, there have been two different practices. Check it out.

I did day 4 this morning, so still a day behind the challenge, and I skipped day 3 since it was a repeat of day one! Today's was a challenge with the planks and chaturnanga, and I was interrupted by a phone call about half way through, but I did finish it. I do like how much time she give to savasana at the end of these practices...

Good morning everyone. I taught my weekly Yoga class last night. Lots of planks, downward dogs and hip openers. I felt very energized when it was done. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance this week to start the Yoga Journal challenge but I'm hoping this weekend I will have more time.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be

KAYLASKS1016 I agree with your opinion of Jason Crandell. Are you doing the 21-day Yoga Journal Challenge?

I am doing the newest 21-day Yoga Fitness Challenge, today it was day 4, this challenge it's a bit vigorous, in my humble opinion not as good as the one you are doing.

Hey everyone,

I'm totally new to yoga so I am doing the beginner's section of the yoga challenge. I'm enjoying it so far! Learning a lot!! I really like this Jason Crandell guy. He has such a soothing voice and his videos are pretty challenging, but fun! Just thought I'd check in with my progress/thoughts.

Have you notice that there are homework for every week.

WEEK 1: Homework

A key part of yoga practice is the practice of svadhyaya, which means self-study. This practice involves observing different aspects of yourself and your experience—your mood, your inner dialogue, your energy level—without judgment. When you cultivate this skill, you start to build more awareness, and when you have more awareness of how you are feeling on a particular day, you can more easily make choices that support you.

Your homework this week is to begin the process of self-study and to reflect on how you felt during your practice. Please post your responses to the questions here so that you can both offer and find support from others who are also doing the challenge!

What was your favorite part of practice this week?

What kinds of physical or mental challenges came up?

Was there a tool that got you through the tough parts—either the teacher's encouragement, your breath, or a practice partner?

How did you feel after the practices physically?

What was your state of mind after the practices?

Hi VILASMOM78

Welcome to Sparkpeople! I think you'll like it here and find it supportive in your efforts, it's a great community. I've been a member for years but have just restarted having drifted away from it for some time. I joined this challenge as I love yoga and I'm going to track it on my own tracker on my page rather than part of the group. You'll find there's a lot of flexibility about how to track your exercise so you can pick whichever suits you best.

Have fun!

Good morning everyone. I didn't get to do YJ Day 1 last night. My in-laws came for supper and unfortunately I got sick from the dessert but I will get it done tonight.

VILASMOM78 emoticon to the Yoga team the Yoga Challenge and to Sparkpeople. You can track your minutes in "my Fitness" thread in "my Trackers"(see at the left side in you heading page below the word Sparkpeople). Also you are invited to join the September Challenge in which we set and track our goal for our Yoga practice along the month.

For the Yoga Challenge , also we are going to keep this thread so we can comment on this specific challenge. How you feel? was it what you were looking for in a practice? was it challenging? we intend to finish the whole challenge, but we are flexible there will be days that either our busy schedules get in our way or just we are tired from previous practices, so we'll go at our own pace. Hope you enjoy the Yoga practice in the Yoga Challenge and being part of this team and Sparkpeople!

finished day 1 this morning, so I'm a day behind, and it was vigorous! Much more than I expected...in a good way!

Vilasmom, you can join the September challenge and post there, or post here, however you like. I add my yoga minutes to my fitness quick tracker.

Hi! I just joined the group and the YJ fitness challenge. First video was not as easy as I was expecting! Does the Yoga Lovers Group have a goal for completing the challenge? I was just wondering in regards to tracking. Any help or advice would be great. I am new to SparkPeople. Thanks for starting the group!

I would love to join, but there may be several days in September when we are traveling that I won't have internet access. We leave Sept. 3, stay in Germany a day with SIL and BIL, then on to Turkey for Peace Corps celebrations, to DH's village where he served in PC in the late 60's, back to Germany for 4 days and to D.C. for visit with son, DIL and DGS for 5 days.... home on Sept. 24th.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.
