Kate, here is a good, but lengthly explanation of Ashtanga yoga... www.ashtanga.com/html/background.htm
l

Read and let me know any questions you may have. The system I use, Adamantine, is based on the ideas of Ashtanga, but doesn't require complete mastery of one asana before learning the next. Instead, while know what mastery looks like, you do the asana as you are able continuing to work towards mastery. For instance, my forward fold is good, but my back is not straight yet, so when I am in forward fold, exhaling, I am conscious of working toward pulling my head toward the floor. Hope that makes sense.

CJ - you keep mentioning the Ashtanga style yoga. It makes me so curious! Is there a good site/youtube vid you'd recommend to learn about this style? I could google, but just want make sure I'm looking at accurate info.

I agree with your assessment of yoga. So many exercises you have to change to keep getting benefits... not yoga for me.

That sounds wonderfully challenging Carol Jean! No wonder you look so fit! And I'm sure you'll enjoy the yin classes all the more in autumn having had a break from them. I'm just back from a yin class and feel just amazingly loose and relaxed ... but tomorrow will be a tough flow class that challenges every bit of me and improves my strength and endurance. I just love how yoga can be adapted to whatever we need.

I love my weekly yin yoga class, however, my wonderful teacher goes north for 3 months every summer so I am without that class. I practice a style based on Ashtanga, created by a teacher from Iowa City who now lives in Des Moines. In fact I am taking a private lesson with him this afternoon. The practice is called Adamantine and he plans to release it in the fall. It is a serier of asanas with sun salutations in between that takes me about 45 minutes to complete and I am drenched and feeling fabulous when I am done.

Thanks a mill Carol Jean, it's been slow going getting down to a more healthy weight but I'm almost there! I used to just do DVDs at home but I joined a studio a few months ago and have been taking as many classes as possible - I pay a monthly membership fee and get unlimited classes. The styles vary but they tend to be a general hatha style with a fair bit of vinyasa in some of them. Others are more of a gentle style. Twice a week I do yin yoga which I adore. And I'm hoping to start attending an ashtanga class if I can fit it in - it's on the same day as my swimming lesson which sometimes leaves me tired and sore so I've been holding off on it. So I guess I'm still experimenting! What kind of yoga do you practice? You are looking amazing, I just love your photos!

Kate, thanks for that, I checked it out but it didn't let me watch it as I'm outside the States. But neve rmind, I will keep my eyes open, I'm sure I'll get to see it eventually!

CJ - I wish!! It'd be so nice to find groups like that!!

Dharmaphile - you can go to www.fatsickandnearlydead.com and watch it free. If not there, then check hulu.com - it was free to watch there last I checked. Or, if you get streaming Netflix, that's where I got to watch it!

Haha, I totally get that Kate! I was watching with tears in my eyes. I'll keep my eyes open for "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" ... and I'll bet I'll be cheering too!

Carol Jean, I wish I lived in the area - I'd love to meet up with you all and attend my very first yoga conference. Hope all goes well and you have a great time!

I hope nobody will flag this as inappropriate because I am shamelessly promoting something...but I am not making any profit or money out of my promotion.
If you live anywhere in the Midwest, please attend the Iowa City Yoga Conference. We could have Spark group meeting there, It would be great. This is the third year of the festival and I have gone the previous two. It is the best organized, best run and most fun yoga conference. Last year I did an all day Friday intensive... not going to this year, but plan to be there for the kick-off celebration on Friday night...It was so energizing last year. Click on the link to get all the info. If you want to get a flavor of last year's, click on the photo link. The venue is great. Here's the link: iowacityyogafestival.com/

GardenGril - *rofl!* The funny thing is, (warning, possible Too Much Info) his BM's have gotten BETTER since eating all the fruits! He has IBS, and all the caffeine and sugar was making it even worse. He's made comments about how much better his digestions/GI feel.

Hang in there with the yoga!! It is great, and I could tell yesterday that I'd missed my morning practice because I was more tense all day long. Hopefully you're hubby with see that, and ask sometime - but at least you are taking care of yourself. Maybe look in to a power yoga session? (I download from iTunes - Dave Farmar has a few great classes!) Sometimes that can seem more "manly" for a guy not understanding all the benefits, who views yoga with skepticism that it's "easy"

After eating 4 ripe mangos, the Pepsi won't be the only thing your husband "passes on" emoticon

Your message her hit very close to home for me. I have had difficulty convincing my husband to eat healthy for over 30 years. Recently we both decided we wanted to live a healthier lifestyle and walked the nutrition path together - which helped! We chose different directions for getting our bodies moving with him wanting something "extreme"

I am still working on trying to get him to try yoga b/c I see and feel there is so much more to it than getting muscle tone. I am a much calmer person after practicing yoga regularly for almost 2 years. He has trouble calming and sleeping..... Hope my example hits him soon....

Carol - I keep asking him to write up a little motivation article or something. *lol* I have been trying for 8 years to get him to be healthier... and he will, now and then. But I guess some things finally are clicking for him. And, while there is sometimes a frustration to me that "I told you to try doing that YEARS ago!" I am glad that he's finally given up coffee and pop, has increased fresh fruit consumption, and is getting ready to give up refined grains. Just from the first things, he is sleeping again! (He's an insomniac - not a huge surprise with over 32 oz of sugary caffeinated drinks daily!) And he's lost weight and has more energy - not always, and some days he craves coffee ;-) But he's making it!

He has told me he used to see me go on "health binges" where I was very strict with exercise and diet, and gave up all that stuff, and he thought "I could never do that. I don't know how to function without coffee and Mt. Dew." And now he gets it - he sees why it's "addicting" to be healthy, because of the better energy and clear mind. But, like kicking a drug addiction, kicking food addictions is tough and takes you through a "withdrawal" period of sorts, and you have to have support to no "relapse" :)

Sorry! That's my ramble! I've just been so proud of him! He texted me earlier to say he ate 4 ripe mangos for a snack, and passed on the Pepsi :)

PET - keep it up!! So glad to hear you're doing well :)

DHARMAPHILE - I know!! It's so touching to see the look on his face change. You can tell he'd given up, and was depressed. And he's smiling at the end :) Awesome to see "life" back in his life! Have you seen the move "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead"? Another inspiring story of someone changing their life with healthy habits. I was squatting on the couch cheering for the guy at the end! *lol* My husband thought I was a little odd... ;-)

Thank you so much for sharing that video KASHI. The tears are streaming down my face. It is a beautifully told and powerful truth. I think I am particularly emotional because of my own recent major shifts toward wellness. I am so far from being the vegetable they thought I was going to be some years ago. I can't believe it all. Watching that video and learning about Arthur's story was moving; it also opened my own floodgates about my own story-in-progress. Thanks again.

My hubby is starting to be a living testimony to the healing power of food, and he's starting to express interest in yoga since he's seeing me get stronger and more toned from it :) So, we plant our seeds everywhere!
