I agree with all of the last two posts. I haven't done it yet, but I plan to wear my heart monitor one time when I do my yoga and see what happens.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

Thanks for all the input!! I did 50 minutes of yoga yesterday, the first time in years that I've done it, and I can assure you that my heart rate was up and I definitely had some serious deep breathing going on, I had to be careful not to let the breathing get out of control. And talk about working my muscles, today I can tell just how much I did work them, I'm sore for sure! So for now I'm using this as both a cardio and a bit of weight training because my body tells me that's exactly what it was! lol

You can scream, yell, shout, cry, whimper, grunt, bleed, puke and pass out. JUST DON'T QUIT!

Some food for thought......

What it is about aerobic activity that benefits the body? Is it the raised heart rate or the deep breathing that's the most important? Aerobic literally means "with air" so I would argue than when I hold a difficult pose in yoga and I am raising my heart rate and maintaining my even deep breathing - that is aerobic activity. Singing is aerobic activity. Anything we do that induces deep breathing is "aerobic".

Weight training. I do this every day in my yoga exercises. I typically lift over 100 pounds using different muslces throughout my practice. Does a weight have to fit in your hand or be covered with neoprene to count as weight lifting or can I just keep lifting my body?

I don't think medical - or for that matter fitness - science has the amounts of each type of exercise fully figured out yet. So as long as you know your body needs various types of exercise and you work to vary your workouts, I believe you will be healthier for it!

I agree with CarolJean - all three are good to have, and all help each other :)

I recently found some free podcasts for Power Yoga with Dave Farmar. (60-90 min each, beginner to advanced) Some of them definitely challenge me as much as a good circuit training workout! But it depends what you find.

Although I do a vinyassa yoga routine of about 45-50 minutes that leaves me drenched in sweat, I think weight training and cardio are still important. To me the three compliment each other. I do push ups in my yoga routine and I know outside strength training has helped me do them better and yoga helps with the strength training. It's almost a chicken and egg thing with me. I must admit, however, I do yoga 5-6 days a week and I am not that disciplined as far as cardio and strength.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

I'm starting to do more difficult yoga classes - the one I did the other day was definitely aerobic! In general, though, I still count on running, biking, swimming for cardio and weight lifting three times a week to make sure I don't lose muscle.

It depends on the way you practice. Most people regard yoga as stretching exercise, and most hatha yoga or yin yoga classes would would fit there. Some vinyasa or power yoga classes might qualify as aerobic -- you would need to wear a heart monitor to a class and check your heart rate to find out whether the class keeps your heart rate high enough to qualify as aerobic. As far as weight training, you would have to analyze the poses and figure out if you did enough repetitions to allow your practice to qualify as weight training. Many poses are similar to the exercises shown on the Spark training page, but in yoga they are usually done once in a series of poses, rather than repeated until muscle fatigue occurs as is done in weight training. So, me, I generally count yoga as stretching exercise. HTH!

I know that yoga can be a pretty intense workout as I've done it in the past but I'm new at planning in what areas to get my exercise in for maximum benefit, so I'm wondering if yoga could be done in place of weight training and aerobics or as my cardio?? In other words, under what type of exercise does yoga fall?
