Hooray for neti pots! Great to hear the success stories! I've been telling people about them and some people seem a bit squeamish (mainly the ones who are just not very comfortable with the natural functioning of their bodies in general) but others (particularly those with sinus problems) were dying to know more.

I'm so happy with the results that it's got me interested in other yoga cleansing practices, will look into them when I get time but if anyone has anything to share I'd love to hear.

I swear by my neti pot during pollen season. It keeps me breathing and sinus infection free.

My neti pot is my friend. Use it during hay fever season and at the first sign of any colds. This has kept me medication-free for years. emoticon

Both of these help clear up stuffed sinuses and open up clear breathing passages. One with lightly salted warm water and one by stimulating different nadis.

What's the connection between
neti pots and alternate breathing?
Thanks in advance!

Thank you CJ, I just tried that and it's very interesting to see how each side is slightly different.

This is a description of alternate nostril breathing from yogajournal.com

Gently close your right nostril with your thumb. Inhale through your left nostril, then close it with your ring-little fingers. Open and exhale slowly through the right nostril.

Keep the right nostril open, inhale, then close it, and open and exhale slowly through the left. This is one cycle. Repeat 3 to 5 times, then release the hand mudra and go back to normal breathing.

I'd love to know more about alternate nostril breathing (and pranayama in general). Would I need a teacher to guide me or could I try it myself? And what is alternate nostril breathing good for?

My husband and I both have an item similar to a neti pot... just a squeezable plastic bottle with a nozzle that fits into my nose perfectly. Our niece who is a nurse practitioner suggested them. Whenever I feel any congestion coming on I use it and within two days, no problems. Have you ever tried alternate nostril breathing as well?

I heard they were helpful for sinus problems too - glad your infection didn't last long though!

I didn't do much research, but found these 2 pages helpful on how to choose and how to use them:

There's a yoga shop in town and they had 3 types and I picked one that looked like it would fit my nostril and not drip everywhere. It's ceramic and holds about 200mls. I'm going to mix the salt and tepid water (1tsp per 500mls) in a jug and then decant into my neti pot. There was no mess by the way - that was a pleasant surprise!

I'm not sure if I will use it every day but I've left it where i will see it to remind me it's there if I need it.

Someone suggested I get one for a sinus infection. It didn't last long enough for me to get one though. Thanks for that!!!
Have you researched neti pots? I think I will.

Has anyone tried this and what do you think?

I'd read about it and thought it sounded interesting and picked up a neti pot last week. it got set aside and I forgot about it till today. I'd been around a smoker yesterday and my mouth/throat/nose all felt inflamed, blocked up and itchy since last night. I just had the bright idea of using my neti pot and I can't believe how much better I feel, the effect was instant and bordering on miraculous! My breathing is so clear and easy now!
