Yoga was great yesterday --- small class so lots of personal attention. We are so spoiled! A few new poses and lots of stretching and twists.

Candy, good you found your balance. We will have another instructor next month. She will have her own style and I'm looking forward to it.

I am a restorative yin specialist. I find lately that means I give a lot when I teach. SO i decided my practice really needs to be about my needs. I took on an ashtanga practice beginning today. I love the slow deliberate movements with focus on form and strength. I suck at it right now, but I think I may have found my balancing practice. Super excited. Looking forward to a daily routine and Friday led class.

Well .... I don't have one of those rheostats for my apartment ... but, the mood is assured by the soundtrack and basic pratyahara ... cultivated by having to practice despite loud noises from the apartment above ... an old story ..

I'd had a few classes at a semi-upscale gym (back when I'd been a member, a few years ago), maybe not as upscale as some of the three or four gyms bigpoppa rotates among (are those simultaneous memberships or reciprocal memberships? Or do you have a standing reduced-drop in rate invitation being as you're a consultant to them?) and the meatheads had dropped clanging, thunderous weights on their floor just upstairs ... during all parts of class ...

In our class we have soft music and a diffuser with whatever scent Laura thinks suits the class.
We turn off all the lights except two or thee small ones on the wall. It is just perfect to concentrate on our goals for the day.

Tina, sounds like a great class. This week is a year for me doing yoga. I do feel like I have improved immensely, but still have a long way to go. The tree for me is one of the more difficult balancing poses, getting better, but also getting impatient. I like the candle and warrior three.

Yesterday's class was like a private class --- after having an overflowing class on Tuesday --- it was just four of us. Loved it. We went over by about 15 minutes. Wonderful, felt terrific after.

Well, SAMMI, I'd had a very edifying "class" in my own practice of 73 minutes (last night)... it encompassed less pilates than usual ... the yoga peak pose was anticlimactic ... after 6+ years regular practice, I figured out the secret to holding tree pose (vrksasana) for the very first time ... with the arms stretching to the ceiling for the very first time ... I don't think it's my changed body; but then again, I do ... because I was too weak to get into urdhva dhanurasana (wheel) despite being able to get into reclined hero's pose ... thinking that everything got skinny enough for my joints to move, but I'd wound up thinking, "who GIVES a fig?" ...

I'm just an easygoing mild-vinyasa student ... let the ASHTANGIS worry about their bodies ...

When I do that much fusion that late in the day, it carries into the next day ... I had a very good sleep, (better than after doing yoga alone, of course) and I sailed through work today ...

Especially if lately, as I have, taken to dance .. dancing so much it's making me sick ... but dancing is not bad at all for the arms, because some people have a low baseline arm strength ...

Like I signed up for a series of classes in yoga with the pilates studio... it is run by Spencer, who mostly specializes in machine pilates - the mat pilates classes, which I'd taken with same as who is teaching me yoga, have sometimes gotten rococo with all the props, not exactly to simulate machines but to roughly challenge you against gravity in the way the machines challenge you against lateral resistance (never did try machines - a one hour instructed session on one of them is out of my price range! Having the real estate at my disposal to be able to house my own home pilates machines is also out of my price range)

Anyway, I did take yoga with her yesterday ...

But I still danced my backside off that night, just had a spare 50-ish minutes on hand.

Beginning to regain lean, stringy guns ... gotta start somewhere ...!

Absolutely NO trouble with their generous expiration dates on class packs!

My God, on some other levels some days I do feel 29 again, anyway ...

My arms are stronger now from doing yoga, but I keep reading that doing a light weight routine is good for keeping bones strong as you age. My own opinion is yoga two to three times a week is enough, especially when you are doing other routines too. If you do too much you will not keep it up. Better to do what you know you will continue.

Sammi, I've only been back doing Yoga since 7/14 and looking at my record, haven't been doing it that regularly. I don't go to a class, but do Richard Hittleman's Yoga routines which I'm suppose to do every day rotating three different routines. I used to do this all the time in my past.

So it looks like I'm in too much of a hurry and I'm not doing the routines like I should. Part of that is because I'm doing so much. I bought a rebounder and started rebounding 7/10 which helped me feel so much better that I did get back to yoga and weights. However, I seem to be having a problem getting Yoga in with the other things I'm doing.

So I'm doing weights for strength, but is that necessary when doing Yoga? Since Yoga works the muscles, does it add strength? I know I've done this Yoga when I was younger, but I was stronger at that time so can't speak of whether it helps strength or not. ???

The other Yoga program I used to do is AliMacgraw's Mind and Body. But I can't do that because I can't do the Sun Salute yet due to back and arm strength.

How long have you been back doing yoga. Don't be impatient and don't rush it. Just enjoy each class and know that each time will be a bit better. Do you go more then once a week? I started out once a week and found that twice is better. August will be a year for me and some poses are still getting easier.

Don't know where to ask my question so will try here.

I've only gotten back to yoga lately and although I seem to be getting a bit more flexible elsewhere, I'm not getting any where with the cobra. My back is simply so stiff. I guess my question is will it ever get looser? Is there something else I can do to help with back flexibility? I don't want to force it as I did that once in the past and suffered back pain for awhile so I learned my lesson.

But it's getting very discouraging. Would getting a massage help?
