7/4 - 73 minutes gym-presentation (no pranayama included) of S.E.A. Change, my proprietary own vinyasa yoga/pilates fusion practice ... "independence practice" intermediate-level hips/twists/lower body bootcamp a.k.a. Version 27A ftw ...

I could not do some poses ... arms a little weak ... but again I did Kurmasana (Sleeping Turtle) with my shoulders under my legs ...

If I get stronger ... when? ... another arm balance I left out is Bhujapidasana ... though the head cannot stay dipped in prostration for long (aka final expression out of Ashtanga)... let my MIND express my spirituality moreso than my body ...

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of our teacher's yoga classes. She had five 30 minutes classes so everyone could do as much as they wanted or to see what some of the other classes were like. I arrived for the last three classes which were a class concentrating on different types of twists, a power yoga and a meditation class. All the classes were overflowing with people either participating or watching.

She was pleased with the turnout and a good time was had by all. Did not have a chance to ask about the new pose. Maybe Tuesday. Have a lovely day Yogis, Namaste, Sammi

Well, SAMMI, you do have a trusted resource you can go to ... as for my yoga teacher, I doubt I could make her class tomorrow ... and I would not really talk to her about koundinyasana or anything else along those lines, although it is in notes that I did show her a few months ago ...

I think she is teaching on Monday, not 100% sure ... the style she teaches is milder and quite a bit more faster moving than what I have designed at home ... she does not teach arm balances and does not teach some of the most challenging backbends ... and I do (in teaching [yoga] to myself) ...

I did a 5 minute walk
then 20 minutes cardio jazz dance.
Then I seamlessly segued into 65 minutes of my own vinyasa yoga pilates fusion ... but no music for the yoga at all ... I was trying out the newest version, inspired by the sequencing experienced in Times Square ... and it worked!

I'm this close to getting into One-Legged Sage Koundinya Pose II on the side with the more open shoulder/ looser hip socket. It's got to be one part arm strength and two parts hip flexibility ... no biggie ... nobody wants to muscle into this pose, because to do so isn't worth it ... and could injure your groin, I'm sure ...

@SAMMI, yoga is SUPPOSED to throw a curve ball at you, each time you do it. The teacher is not being mean, she is there to bring your ego down a notch.

Yoga is a never-ending process in that way. Because life is full of curve balls being thrown at you. Each pose you do is presented by the instructor to be a challenge to your ever feeling "accomplished".

Personally, I have had challenges to my proprioceptive abilities (ability to tell where my body-or parts of it- is in space), and ability to retain and regain a sense of balance ... I do have a very high degree of kinesthetic intelligence otherwise across the board, but it is still challenged by yoga. Proprioception and balance challenges had been the first things about yoga that struck me, that made it different from squatting out burpees or doing pushups or stretching ... and it may not be the last, but it has been a consistent theme for me throughout ...

Umm .... I don't eat chicken, pork, bacon/ham or game meats; extremely sparing of cured poultry in general--these days. I eat more fish cooked from fresh than I used to.

I may have to add extra-lean beef back into my diet some time not far off in the future. It will have been years. Not happy with my currently low weight.

There comes a time when you can do just so much in trying to get your weight exactly where you want it; and the calories can't come from carbs.

I had another flash of yellow light in that eye. It comes without any pain.

VQ, yes, I love to research and make up my own mind --- not like one of today's do what everyone else does lemmings that follow blindly.

Yoga was good yesterday -- I can do the gate on my left side better then on the right side. Will continue to try. Our teacher is 60 and better then most. She has been doing yoga for about five years. She always gets us just when we think we have mastered a pose she will say now if you want to take it further..... Then we all groan and say no way, but we all try. Love the fact that she is always helping us get better and always introducing in new poses.

I am a semi vegan --- never liked red meat, used to try and hide it on my plate when I was a kid. Do like fish and chicken. Love Broccoli.

Have a wonderful day Yogis, Sammi emoticon

Um, to be specific: I didn't do all yoga this time:

I did 20 minutes Gillian Cofsky Shimmy Workshop (that's belly dance) from my yoga online
and then 40 minutes Body by Bethenny Yoga ...

My hips are still quite tight ... doing quite a bit of average dance ...

Still, I don't do the Bethenny Frankel in heavy rotation at all ... my preferred style is a little softer than that ...Bethenny Skinnygirl Workout is even more in the wrong direction ... lol

@ FANCY - don't be discouraged. Adaptation is the one thing that many yoga teachers don't want you to know about ... THESE days ... they'd have to really earn their pay, otherwise.

So, I beat them at their own game ... research, research, research ... and the right kind of classes. And even now, NOT the condescending "Boomer Yoga" ones ... I would rather take the kinds of classes *I* want, and not the ones they [mistakenly] think I'll find sooooo easy and non-challenging that I'll want to buy a truckload of classes of ... Of course I would find those classes easy. But I don't have the bankroll they're looking for.

And I hadn't gotten through a magnet science-oriented high school without calling on my powers of learning by osmosis (I am the best brain picker in the world! and a DIYer)

Just two days ago, one of the kick-butt Open Level yoga teachers of a certain vegan-oriented style (at the place where I learn dance) wanted me to join her yoga class.

She has never actually seen HOW I move. I merely LOOK the part. Can you say, "halo effect" ... ?

I expect the judgment to stop the moment I or anyone else asks to take a class. I'd had about 25 pounds more on me, ONLY 25 pounds! and some yoga teachers advised me against taking Open Level yoga classes AT THAT TIME. Believe it or dont believe it: when my DAIRY (I emphasize and specify that) diet shakes worked well, though briefly, and I had been age 29, I had been recommended to take break dance classes at a dance studio [in Florida where I used to live.]

I'm now a low-carber due to having diabetes Type 2 and it's working even better than the diet shakes ever did, and the holier-than-thou vegan lifestyle yoga people could just eat it!

I have a library book called Yoga for Arthritis by Fishman & Saltonstall that is very helpful! So I have been practising a lot from that book since they have a section for Scoliosis. I have been a little hesitant with yoga because of this condition but feel much more confident now. Plus I do a lot of walking so the stretching and poses help with strengthening and flexibility.

That said I practised 20 minutes yesterday and I will practise 20 minutes today.

Oh, foo ... my hip sockets STILL hurt last night big time. Can't turn a peach into a pearto paraphrase, translate and bastardize my former cronies at Nichiren Shoshu (of America) Buddhism ... [hah, you think with THIS attitude, I'd never been a Buddhist? Think again!]

It certainly had not helped that I attended Belly Dance Open Level at The Nameless Studio; and was helping caretaking my elderly aunt over this past Sunday ... these hips don't lie {but I'd never been a Shakira fan ...] That class (and much of Egyptian belly dance) is tough on one's hip flexibility - anyone who thinks that Oriental Dance is easy ... HAH!

ALL of my dance teachers had been in that class. It was a party, the belly dance equivalent of a Zumba class ... (and I am not suited for Zumba - not with bad knees, bad feet - and not to mention, Z classes are actually more expensive than the deal I'd cut on these ...)

However! ... I am going to subject my hips to lots of yoga tonight ...

My hip sockets are screaming at me right now from yesterday's excursion ... just gonna ice them ... and the place where the yoga model fell out of some inversion and right onto my arm started howling, too ... not sure I wanna do this again next year ... of course, if I don't take a class, they get no donation ... I get no chance to be "touched" by a fallen yoga icon of sorts ... (not down with that one, anyway, since yoga is not meant to be a contact sport) ... you guys already know the drill ...

Thank you for responding. I expanded a little bit on this for my blog. Before being diabetic, I'd never really "achieved" intermediate level in asana and I'd practiced very lengthy sessions very frequently in a very power-yoga-like style -- with corework added in. Now, though being much lighter in weight, somehow I've got speed and coordination galore but without much "horsepower" to back it up. Should I get stronger in the upper body, I would have to put the brakes on what I could do, due to these eye issues ... um... somehow I start talking about kids who got to go to sleepaway camp in there ... on some kinda roll, but it's sweetened with saccharine--not stevia ...

I hear you, all these Times Square events are great for tourists from outside NYC, who LIKE crowds, who have NO problems standing or sitting cross-legged for long periods of time ... but you know, if my boss pulls what he pulled again in July, I've got a coupla free passes to yoga classes - and even a couple gyms in Brooklyn, that I'm NOT selling on eBay ...

For now, I'm good. All that swag.

Just hope the mat does not p' off my yoga teacher next Sunday ...

VQ, thank you for sharing the real goings on. I've been to Times Square one News Year's Eve in the mid 70s --- it was wonderful. I guess there are always people at those types of events that are there for the being "seen" moment rather then the being part of something special moment.

Have a nice rest of the weekend, Sammi

Well, SAMMI, I'd gotten all the swag - and was putting it all together - chose a place more comforting to me to do so. Turns out a skinny little thing - one of the assistants? models? after her photo opportunity fell onto me in the course of doing an inversion for the crowds--I coulda cared less what the freak she was doing--more my diabetes management talking than mudita--you better believe it!, since I'd had a sling to transport the swag mat I was rolling up, for my long walk to grab a small supper, and then for the rail excursion home. I, if a little brusquely, rolled her little fetal posture childhood gymnastics student's light bones off of my arm ...

Good riddance to the Boston cream pies of yoga ...

I think she was from Yoga Journal, altar to asana uber alles ... ,But, actually, the main course, and not the sugar-shock dessert: after practicing yoga with Colleen Saidman and Rodney Yee. Can you say "forgiving yoga style?" ... they instructed only to the low middle in skill level, if that ...

Now here the rest of the truth:

If you know Times Square in New York City, during tourist/wedding/grad/dad/summer camp season, then you know what crowds are ... why would that go away just because someone organized (and they did a masterful job, if I may say so) a mega-class?

Well, I'd never been in a large yoga class. Simply because I commute from outer borough to outer borough within New York City, and did not pick that kind of studio, to date. So this was a whole new world, opened up to me.

Now, the class is also, informally, by donation ... and I did choose to donate a more-than-nominal amount ... not the Andrew Jackson face one, but not so much south of that ... They said give "what you'd normally pay for a yoga class" ... so I gave that ... in truth, what I'd paid for my last donation class (a few years ago) ...

When you are teaching 4,000 people, only a select few will get the stage view.

There was an hour waiting (standing! It's a good thing there is over 30 pounds less of me than two years ago; and that my orthotics are new) to get in the gate. Once in, another 20 minutes of sitting cross legged (my sit bones on a well improvised impromptu prop of a hardcover book) waiting for announcements, etc. and for the class to finally start.

I already own a few of Yee's dvds and I'm not sure, maybe a download. Not a member of their Gaiam, Yoga Club or Gaiam TV, though (slow streaming speed) ...

They have a distinctive, imaginative hatha style ... felt privileged despite my little physical problems, and aversion of crowds, herding and near-Germanic parade-like queuing organization ...

It was actually the 11th annual, not the 10th. (Start of the 11th period, or Solstice count).

I've a very soulful yoga teacher to whom I normally go. I will take the commemorative Athleta yoga mat they'd given me AND use it in that class atop the mat included with class (this would be the free class I'd been granted as an adjustment). Then, she'd - like it or not - probably surmise that I'd been there.

I'd gotten all the swag available (available to my nosebleed section, anyhow) ... including free guest passes to Integral Yoga Institute, and other high-profile studios, INCLUDING Tree of Life, where I used to go for yoga and still go (for even more SPIRITUAL pursuits), and a little yoga DVD from Yoga Journal.

Of course I had been taking a helluva chance with these diabetic feet on unfamiliar ground, even with my mat atop the swag mat--kept having to move the book onto the road-pavement. A spider had crawled across my mat as I practiced, as well.

But I've always been risk-neutral.

VQ -- would love to have been in the middle of all that energy. I saw a brief news clip of the crowd. Congrats on being part of it.

Well, I was in Times Square at the Solstice Celebration ... and took a class after work. I had to travel (well off the beaten path from where in New York City metropolitan area) nearby there to run an errand, anyway.

It was great!
And it made me appreciate taking the different approach.

Yoga was good today --- new poses, my balancing on my left side was good, not so much on the right. Worked on getting deeper in downward dog and transferring the feel to forward folds.
Really heated up half way through --- was happy to sit down for more folds. Have a good weekend Yogis, Sammi

Well, I did 54 minutes of the practice (supposed to be about 1 hour) ... David Magone's Flowing Practice for Weight Loss (nee' "Twists and Lower Body Flow", but that original title would not sell over at myyogaonline.com) ... it's amazing how tough, enjoyable and effective the practice can get when you finally are "taught" (insofar as a pre-recorded instructor could "teach" you) the Ashtanga jumpback ...

Something people coming to the active yoga practices at low, prescriptive (as opposed to a nice healthy, happy weight for any UNDISEASED state) goal weights never get to find out and/or appreciate emoticon

Unfortunately, insofar as they blatantly ignore the accessed and acquired spirituality of some vigorous yoga practices, Yoga Journal is correct in stating that "power yoga" would not do much for someone carrying more than 20 lbs of 'extra' weight ...

On the other hand, this opens up a whole new world of podcasts that I might try to do (again), this time in their entirety, those podcasts which are far less modifiable (as in, just leave stuff OUT, plus there's spirituality galore for a still-enriched class) for a heavier weight - such as this one in yoga/pilates fusion:

I do remember The Red Slipper in Glendale, and the JCC ...where I'd taken up tennis ... I'd lived in Colorado far longer back in 1972-1975, in Denver proper, briefly with my sister and her then-husband; and up at school further upstate in Colo.

I gotta tell you, the 5,450 feet above sea level elevation worked even better at weight loss than low carbing (and I had been starting out so close to goal ... just like this go-round) ...

So, of course I factor in being post menopausal. And then there is absolutely still a fair contest.

But low carbing and having to do it at sea level ... from your blood composition to your muscle tone challenges (I'd been challenged thereby long before getting this old ...due to hereditary high blood cholesterol and its concomitant treatment with statin drugs) AND SUCCEEDING (if it's followed) is the true, true test ...

And, uh, you want me to talk about yoga ?

I'd been dancing my pants off the past few days ...

Now it's yoga time ... later on David Magone will teach me a few things ...

Janet Stone's Ganesha Flow today. First time with this practice. It's lovely! Lots of delicious hip-openers, plus some arm balances I'm not ready for but had fun attempting (Eka Pada Koundiyanasana II) Can imagine this one being in the regular rotation.

VQ, I lived in Denver twice --- a mile outside the city in Glendale -- 1977-80 & 83-86 -- there was a wonderful woman's gym I used to go to --- loved it. Met my first husband there. He was in a terrific band called Starfrost. My favorite hole in the wall Mexican Restaurant was the Riviara also called the Glendale Country Club. When I was back for a visit a few years ago they had moved to a new location. It felt so different --- not the same, so sad.

Nuff of that, on to yoga. Have a great day yogi friends, Sammi emoticon

Wait, C'ville is a college town, right?

Not a tech mecca. Getting some of this confused.

yoga class was excellent yesterday --- she introduced several new poses and did a mini sun salutation. A few new people in class -- all flowed nicely and left with a smile on my face.
Next Saturday is our yoga teacher's one year anniversary in her new location. There will be all day yoga classes (free 30 minutes classes) for anyone who wants to join in. I plan to go mid afternoon for a few classes --- I want to try the power yoga class.

VB -- sometimes I think we don't realize what a nice world we've created for ourselves until we go away for a few days. Hope your conference goes well.

VQ -- where out West did you go?

Have a wonderful day yogi friends, Sammi emoticon
