Yoga was good today and she threw in a lot of new twists, stretches and sun salutation -- I had a little trouble with frog on my right side, no problem on the left. Did a little better at camel and just ok on reverse warrior. Good class.

I did nearly 90 minutes of my sequence. When I take that long, it includes pranayama at the top of it.

But I'd done a good half hour of desk aerobics at the job.

I do not get one full hour for lunch, and the office is tiny of staff; I can't go anywhere.

Lunchtime multilevel hour long Hatha class with one of my all-time favorite teachers. A very Iyengar oriented class. Still want to do YJ's meditation tonight.

Was so busy doing desk aerobics (and filing papers at the same time) at the job today, that I gave no thought as to exactly how to practice my yoga tonight ...

My hours will be cut for the forthcoming 2 weeks, but I plan to devote that time to MORE dance classes, dance videos and dance downloads ...

might change my mind over the weekend, though ... miss doing lengthy 4x/week sessions ... after yesterday, I did not realize how much ... the chasing tapas is the addictive part ....

Yoga was great today --- a larger class and we really got warm --- felt so good --- she threw in a new group of stretches. Felt so, so good after. Looking forward to Friday's Class.

First day in 2 weeks that I haven't made a yoga class. It's 11:00 am and I'm going to do a short practice and then a short meditation. I have a yoga app on my Kindle Fire that lets me design my own sequence of poses and the length I want to hold each pose. It's kind of klunky to work with, but I love the result. I've built a 20 minute sequence of primarily standing poses based on one of the sequences in an Iyengar yoga book, so I think I'll do that now & then the Yoga Journal's 10 minute meditation.

And, sorry to say, never more than 10 times a month. I'd have to have a real death wish. I test my blood sugars twice a day for my condition.

And, with my preferred style of home practice, it came in normal range but high-ish in comparison with my recent track record ... more than 4 hours since eating something ...

Samadhi can wait.

OK, I did the practice:

20 minutes of Gillian Cofsky Belly Dance Shimmy Workshop ...
and then

73 minutes of my yoga-pilates fusion practice. I am no longer treading the "middle path" ... and I am slowly advancing again ... I actually did side plank with tree legs on my stronger (the left) side ...

my body can take that tapas ...

um.. no matter what happens, I cannot do yoga fewer than 10 times a month; although with shortened work hours this month . (lower pay, too, though).. MORE CARDIO DANCE CLASSES FOR MEEEE !!

I will practice my fusion practice ... after a stint of cardio belly dance ... my apartment is inundated with incense smells from above apartments (hate to bring out THAT verboten topic again, from that VABUTSY thread, but I know it is coming from drug users upstairs, since I've smelled the actual thing once on a day off ...) ... I will set my scented candle going only AFTER both dance and yoga-pilates ...

... am I in trouble on here ... mentioning it?

Please ... NOOOOOO ... this is what home yoga practice in the cramped big city is ABOUT ... putting up with ambient pollution ....

BigPPP -- Hope you have a better day today. Moving is very stressful. Deep breath.

VB --- Bless you for being there for Mildred --- I would imagine at her age everything in magnified in her eyes. So good you have yoga to help you keep your stress level down.

VQ -- I have a bit of trouble with my blood pressure on occasion --- used to be low, now at times goes crazy --- they did say it was hereditary --- went to holistic doc last week. Am going to try a pill and some tonic. Good luck with your next eye exam.

Have a good day Sparklers, Sammi emoticon

Spent the weekend as "care partner" to a 94 year old friend who had to be hospitalized. Which made me really appreciate the 75 minute multi-level Hatha class this afternoon. Nothing like an emotionally and somewhat physically stressful couple of days to make you realize just how much a regular yoga practice contributes to true well-being, in its broadest sense. And yogic breathing helps me maintain calm in the midst of the challenges of having a somewhat demanding elderly friend in the totally alien and overwhelming environment of a modern teaching hospital. Now, I've gotten a glaucoma scare from my diabetes related eye doctor ... do I give up half shoulderstand yet? Not diagnosed with glaucoma yet.

I dodged a bullet keeping to six full breath cycles, my half-shoulderstand ...f

No more than that.

I return in one month for testing re: glaucoma. I'd known something was strange about my eyes anyway, even before I was diagnosed with diabetes ...

Dear SAMMI, thank you for this, but I will let you in on a little secret.

I stick less accessible corework (= pilates) into the practices I wind up being able to do wheel in ...
This is not a coincidence.

Physical "achievements" cannot work synergistically if you try to maximize across the board ... and, if anything, I am Type A about my pilates.

My current yoga teacher knows this, as she has taught me a large handful mat pilates classes before ..

A very special multi-level Hatha class this morning for several reasons: It is the class that I first joined several years ago when I re-started a regular practice; the instructor is a Cajun from southern LA, like me; his daughter is getting married today and she was in the class with several of the wedding guests. So the physical challenge of the class was almost irrelevant today -- the emotions and "good vibes" were so strong.

Morning Hatha yoga class -- somewhat challenging. The teacher has a very relaxed, do-your-own-thing kind of style which is good for stress relief but not so good for working at my edge. However, there were several balancing poses that did require concentration, especially as one involved a transition from eagle to warrior 3 -- keeping balance through that required a very steady mind and drishti.

I actually got into wheel .. but I didn't hold it all that long ... a lot of tapas going on in tonight's practice ... still doing half-shoulderstand as inversion (all the rest are demi-inversions) and did it to Yoga Moods 2 (selected tracks) CD ...

don't miss clown anymore, but I know I will miss if I don't do enough yoga in the month ...

Really, I'm not playing games: I had to ditch the headstand in any form, even teddy bear half-tripod headstand, a.k.a. clown (from kids' vinyasa yoga, generally) ... pictured here: www.yogameditation.com/Articles/Shor

@BIGPOPPA, I could set my watch to my practice's structure, so it's like doing very similar DVDs, though no two practices in sequence are actually the same ...

So, I did do 74 minutes of yoga-pilates fusion, but only after doing a previously downloaded belly dance shimmy workshop video featuring Gillian Cofsky ... (that had been an additional 20 minutes) ...

How "will" I practice yoga ... within the hour, I promise ... and it will be my usual non-DVD (anti-DVD?) but I can't say as to how long, and I can't say that it won't be prefaced by a little cardio first ... if I belly dance after yoga, I have nearly zilch concentration left ... takes mental energy to do yoga even if it's led, in my case ...

60 minute "multi-level Hatha class" at the gym, with my favorite of all times (excepting a young man only long ago in a galaxy far, far away -- namely Toronto in the 1970s). Virabhadrasana 1, 2 and 3, Trikanasana, Uttanasana and Parsvottanasana provided lots of challenge; legs up the wall savasana provided deep relaxation. Then I had to go back to work since it was a lunchtime class. Ah well.

I live in Charlottesville, Virginia, which I think might be the yoga capital of North America. I have been doing yoga all of my adult life and have watched the yoga classes grow and grow in size and variety over the last 5 years or so. Frankly, sometimes I feel like I am just waiting out the popularity to get back to the smaller classes. Meanwhile, though, I am blessed by having such high quality and such variety in teachers and classes. Although I maintain a daily short practice, that is very Iyengar in style and meditative in focus, I do love yoga classes. I feel like I always push myself just that little bit harder in a class and I almost always learn something, or am reminded of something, from the teacher. I also really appreciate the blossoming of yoga information on the web. For years my main connection with the larger yoga community was the Yoga Journal. I still subscribe, but now use it as much on the web as in print. Right now I am off to my once-a-week hour-and-a-half yin yoga class. Always a nice follow-up to an intense flow style class.

Let me add, VABUTSY, that you were lucky for liking Dharma Mittra style, and SAMMIHAT for liking your teacher (and possibly the style you are taught)!

Even though my current yoga teacher gave my practice script the vote of confidence, she should have seen the harsh, bendy, rococo, self-mortifying practice--with a lot of influence of the more-sane, more-alignment-oriented Himalayan Tradition style I learned at Tree of Life (its real name)--I aped on my own that birthed the current one ...

I could not stand the style I'd been doing ($750 worth of classes- I'd spent only about $1,000 total on classes - that's NYC dollars, folks - in the past 6 years of yoga practice), but had to keep it slow to prehabilitate for the classes on offer that I took once every 10 days at the time ... but it taught me the best. It created this yoga monster with the fusion practice that I will leave for my heirs, once I get the philosophy down associated with it.

Yeah, if the classes sound like Dharma Mittra style, it is not--but Dharma Mittra's style was grafted onto Jivamukti and Baptiste, and that became the style taught at 3nergyrooms (not its real name)... lol

I will add a day as well (home self-practice, natch!) ... still not enough times a month to join any months' challenges HERE (but at 10x a monthclose)... but, because of my unusual-but-still-textbook case of Type 2 diabetes, the blood sugar becomes quite a bit less manageable w/ yoga w/ my schedule and stressors right now ....

Spoke to consultatory nurse about this. I used to do yoga about 16 lengthy sessions a month. No time (and increasingly, no energy - before treatment for diabetes) for any cardio ... and, of course, ever-cognizant of circulatory problems that I didn't know where they'd been coming from at the time, I'd made the practice increasingly salutation-heavy with fewer breath cycles per pose hold ...

Good Morning,

I did go to my yoga class yesterday. It was another small class (which I love) and so we went slowly through poses to define each step. The class ran over a bit and everyone was feeling good by the end. I asking to see the crow pose -- I am a long way from that one. We did all three warrior poses and a few flow poses, twists and stretches.

VQ, I enjoy reading your thoughts on yoga and hope to continue to improve over time. I am going to look for a good video so I can add a day to my yoga. This morning is my two mile walk.

VABUTSY, that's a lot of yoga. It's nice to have it so convenient to work and home. This is a small town we retired to and there isn't a huge choice of where to go. I am fortunate to have such a good instructor as my 1st.

Have a wonderful day Yogis, Sammi emoticon

Right you are -- Dharma Mittra definitely rang a bell -- he is the one that teacher talks about.

@VABUTSY, let me guess: the "guru" was either Dharma Mittra or Dana Trixie Flynn ... depending upon the speed of the flow--these are the two flavors of the month, although DTF makes up her own moves, so it might be Dharma Mittra ... others that come to mind may have gone to California by now ...

Guru is in quotes intentionally--Gee, you are YOU! [spoken G - U -R-U ]

Thank you BIGPOPPA for answering my question. For one thing, to me it gets a little boring reading "20 minute yoga DVD" every day.

For another thing, and this is not meant to be facetious: I don't know how comfortable I'd personally be to find that you had created your own yin (or even a more macho style) yoga practice, when I am struggling with the philosophical elements of my own creation ...

VERY challenging and very satisfying 90 minute Hatha Flow class today with an instructor who trained under a guru in New York City -- a very particular style of yoga that puts a lot of emphasis on energy flow and chakras and breath control. The practice today included several challenging balance poses, including Warrior 3 with arms in reverse namaste, and crow going into headstand. Also headstand from Prasarita Padottanasana -- which I can only sometimes do but did do today. But I was not careful enough about hydration and so started to get leg cramps and had to pause to hydrate. Still it was a very physically and mentally satisfying yoga class.

POPPA, do you do the same DVD each day?
What level is the DVD?
Who are your favorite instructors?
Or, did you create the DVD itself, i.e., "BIGPOPPAYOGA ... The Road to Yin Strength" .. ?

From your stats, you don't seem "PUFF"-y anymore ...

I am fortunate in that the gym I belong to offers at least 4 yoga classes a day and has two locations: one is around the corner from my home and the other is a couple of blocks from my office. So I typically do a yoga class 5-7 times a week. Usually Hatha or Hatha Flow. The one thing they don't have is a yoga ropes wall so a couple of months ago I made one for myself in my bedroom.

@SAMMI, because I'm sure you're "listening" here:

I just completed 75 minutes of my own yoga-pilates fusion practice again today. Yoga class yesterday was cancelled on me, but I got to drag my yoga mat around that neighborhood, just like some yuppie as I went shopping afterward ... this studio supplies mats, but since I gotta go BAREFOOT - somehow the socks-allowed policy changed - and the actual studio floor is used as well (Shiva Rea Mandala Namaskar-inspired off-the-wall class that I wish had existed in that neighborhood years ago) ... so, it winds up thusly ... I preregistered for a walk-in at the walk-in price ... something I've done ONLY for dance classes heretofore in my entire 58 years of living (on principle--I have been frugal, never cheap - though accused of it ... including by yoga teachers-not at THAT studio) ...

In actuality, my hours (and pay) will be cut next month ... have been financially insecure for a long time ...

However, I did have on me, the entire write-up (with modules) of my home practice in a fancy portfolio. My yoga teacher did teach a pilates class and she was still hanging around after that class (back-to-back with what would have been my yoga class) talking to her pilates students ... I had not been in that pilates class, so I spoke with her outside the class room, and I told her I pre-registered for a class in yoga with her .. a few weeks in the future ... emoticon

She was fascinated with my 15 page script. Really perused it. Read it. Studied it. Commented that it looked like an intense practice ... and was fascinated by, and told me she wished she, herself, had the self-discipline ...

A surprise yesterday when there was a sub for the instructor at one of my regular classes. That always feels like a disappointment and a bit off-putting, so it was a lesson in "going with the flow" and accepting life's surprises with equanimity. Because it was a great class -- challenging flow-style class but with continual reminders to move with the breath and to extend the back. Left me feeling relaxed and energized.
