I took my third class last night and wore my HRM. According to mine, I burned 396 calories, it was actually less than that, since I started it early, and forgot to stop it until about 5 or so minute after, so that calorie burn ended up being for 1 hour, 45 minutes. I'm 5'2, about 130.
My heart rate was in the low range for over an hour, and high intensity for 3 minutes.
Bikram yoga is not my cup of tea. I find it more of a mental challenge than physical. I would have burned way more calories riding my bike for 90 minutes.
I tried Bikram Yoga for the first time last night, and I wore my HRM to see if the estimates I had seen online (up to 1000 calories in 90 minutes?!) were anywhere near accurate. According to the HRM, I burned 538 calories in the 90 minute session. I'm 5'4" and around 140lbs.
Thanks for that info on the calories burned for the Bikram. Did'nt have a clue as to how to figure that out. I continue to attend Bikram more for the overall effects of ridding myself of anxiety and the muscle I can see that I am gaining than losing weight
Yoga and calorie counting has always been a problem for me. I have been doing it for 10 years and I know how to control my breath and heart rate so a monitor doesn't really help me. I can make it through a 90 minute hot class with no problem. When I log the full 1300 calories I burn, my weight loss slows, when i underestimate I starve. I can't seem to find the balance.
I'm not sure what type of hrm you're using. The one I use when I exercise is the band you put below your chest and a watch. It doesn't slip, but I know it would be highly distractive for me.
I've heard of hrm's that are just the wrist bands. I usually gauge how I'm doing by my breath and the "talking effort". If I'm able to talk without any effort - then i'm not working out hard enough - hence in the low end of that range. If i can hardly spell out a word, then I'm def. in the high end. If I'm somewhere in the middle..then that's where I would put it. other thing you may want to try is to wear the hrm for perhaps 5-10mins at sometime in the class and you can guess on average what the cals burned would be for the entire session based on the small segment.

Some sites say 300-1100. I checked the site you recommended and it said 1036. I've been putting 550 into my counter on here. I would rather underestimate too. I tried to wear my HRM today but it was a complete disaster so needless to say who knows what it would've said...
And, wow! According to their calculations, I've actually been UNDERestimating the number of calories I've been burning with my yoga. Which is fine, since I haven't been terribly far off (maybe 50-75 calories or so), and I'd rather underestimate them than overestimate them.
I don't do "Bikram Yoga", but I recently started going to a place, where they do "hot yoga". same concept.
Here's a link that I'm using to find cals burned for the yoga. I think I may have even found the same link in one of the older threads in Yoga Lovers.. when I was searching for local ashtanga teachers.
I googled it and found numerous sites that talk about calories burned for bikram. You could try googling the kind of yoga you do.
As for wearing my HRM during class... I could wear the monitor but I feel like the watch would get in the way of my practice. I guess I could try it though and see what happens. I just feel like it would distract me. I like having on as little as possible in the way of jewelry and such.
I'd use the readings from your monitor to choose the caloric expenditure. The higher your HR, the higher your calorie burn. Does yours have a option to turn off sound? or does it just bother you to have a watch on during practice?

I've been doing Bikram yoga ('hot' yoga) since October and just started SP not too long ago. I am keeping close track of my fitness and nutrition on here but wondering how all of you track the calories for your bikram class. I looked online and the range is 300-1100 per class, that's a GIANT range!! What do you enter? I do have a HRM but you can't really wear the watch in that class, I feel it would be too distracting. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!
