Yes, Paleo has helped me tremendously and is a very sustainable way of eating. I have lost over 198 lbs on Paleo with exercise and a very active lifestyle.

Thanks so much for your reply! You've given me a lot to think about. A friend does paleo and he loves it. My boyfriend and I have contemplated trying it out. Keep up the good work :)

Hey there! Congratulations on the 50 pounds lost! That is quite an accomplishment!

I personally Hate (yes with a capital 'h') low carb diets. I don't believe that they are sustainable in the long run. Some people will argue that they are though. I did it once before, lost 40 pounds, and gained it all back. I know many women have had a lot of success, but I don't know too many that have been able to keep it off without doing a complete lifestyle change that incorporates a lot of variety of healthy foods.

Personally I would suggest you read a book like Eat to Live that shows you a lifestyle type diet (Dr. Furhman calls himself a nutritarian). Or do a paleo/primal life style...but the healthy way.

I'm falling more and more in love with the paleo/primal way of eating. It fits in really well with PCOS. Because you can't have any processed sugars, flours, wheat...well any processed foods of any kind in the paleo lifestyle it sort of automatically gets you to a low glycemic index way of eating.

I just posted a recipe from a beginner paleo book on my website. It's for berry muffins that is made out of almond flour, coconut milk, and honey (no gluten, no dairy, no processed sugars) that is really yummy. http://weightlosswithpcos.com/no-dairy-no-
gluten-berry-muffins

I'm really concerned about over consuming meat though, so I kind of do a mash of vegetarian and paleo/primal. I find great recipes in vegan and paleo cook books that allow me to stay low in the carbs, keep processed foods out of my diet, and still eat tasty stuff.

But back to how to get to that point. You can try doing it cold turkey and follow a plan that is outlined in a book like Eat to Live. That will basically allow you to change your tastes. And that plan specifically will teach you how to eat for nutrition so you won't get a ton of cravings. Or you can ween yourself off stuff. When I originally low carbed I weened myself off of bread and pasta completely. Slowly switched bread out for wraps. Then stopped the wraps and just ate salads. I never found a pasta replacement, I just had to stop eating it eventually.

I feel like I'm rambling, but I hope at least some of that has helped

Hey Everyone!

I know this post is from awhile ago but I was looking for some advice and didn't want to start a new thread. As most of you know, losing weight was PCOS is a slow and steady race. I have been fortunate to lose 50 pounds in the last five years and am struggling to lose the last 35.

I have heard that eating low carb can speed up the weight loss process. I'm not looking for an easy fix or super fast weight loss but I am looking for ways to spend the rest of my life healthy and happy.

How did those who went low carb start? Is there anything that you read that helped you in the process? And how have you sustained living a low carb lifestyle in a very carb saturated world?

Any advise is appreciated, thanks for all of your help :)

I couldn't give up my sandwiches. emoticon

I usually shop at Sprouts and spend 20 minutes reading the labels of their whole grain breads looking for lower carbs, higher fiber and omegas from flax seads. Lately I have been buying the Multi-Grain with Omega 3 from Alpine Valley and it is actually really good plus only 12 carbs.

There are some really good low carb breads that have flax and other healthy seeds that help burn fats. Dave's Killer Bread - Good Seed is delicious.

When I went Paleo I had success with my weight loss but I have also had success by lowering mostly my sugar intake and processed food intake. I do eat whole grain bread and it hasn't hurt my weight loss at all. But I would say for me overall low carb/low sugar/low processed junk has been the best way for me to go!

Low carb is really the only way I can eat and keep my symptoms at bay. I've switched more to a Primal diet. Fewer processed foods, although I do have diet soda at times.

The only way I have been able to lose any weight is by eating low carb and of course exercise, lol.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

I will. right now I'm experimenting with steamed jicama instead of potatoes. I like it, but I'm having a slight allergic reaction to it.

next - I might try some steamed turnips or ruttabegas

I run at the very low end of the carb allowance, but I have gone virtually Paleo. It has really helped with mood swings and cramping is virtually gone...

Weight loss and regular periods. I have totally cut sugars, have one whole grain serving a day, and two servings of fruit (but no bananas or pineapple).
