Does birth control make anyone's head cloudy? I accidentally forgot to take my birth control for a few days and I felt fantastic! My head seemed like it was free and clear but now that I'm regularly taking birth control my mind and general attitude has turned south. Has anyone else had experiences like this? What did you do?!

Smile! It makes you feel better :)

I disagree women shouldn't have to suffer every month. Most women I know can continue with their live with little disruption. Some months mine gets so bad I can't work. When it gets so bad you can't even function, it isn't fair.

My mom put me on bc when I was 16, because I had been dating the same boy for over a year. Within 6 months I was pregnant. By the time my son was 6 months I had my right ovary removed because the cyst on it was so large. Larger than a grapefruit they said. Tried to shrink it for month with birth control, didn't work, just kept getting larger. Then they wanted to keep me on the bc pill but I wouldn't take them. Well I got tired of the irregular periods and trying to finish my senior year of high school so I went back on. Within months I was pregnant again. My daughter was born by the time I was nineteen. Doctors was amazed, said my chances of getting pregnant wasn't good. Well I didn't want any more kids so I went on the Depo shot. I got a divorce but stayed on the shot. I was going through a divorce from the father of my first two. stayed single for a while but me and this other guy got along and decided to live together. Within a month I was pregnant again. My doctor couldn't believe it, said the odds of me getting pregnant on the deop shot plus one ovary, and six cyst's on the other was like 1 in a billion. I wasn't even having periods. Two years ago a female dr told me she thought I had pocs, which I had never heard of before. She took some blood and sent me home. I did some research on it and thought she was crazy, most of what i read you can't have kids with it. Here I had 3 not even trying, trying not to! At my next appointment she said I had it but I was in denial for a long time, still am a little. Anyway Now I have my tubes tied, but she wanted me on bc anyway. She put me on several types and they all made me emotional and suicidal. Now I have endometriosis and pcos, one doctor said endo was an increased form of pocs, but I don't know about that because they are 2 different things. The doctors I have seen act like bc i my only option, I am tired of being miserable all the time.

SASHA, I don't know much about Metformin, but is it not an option for you. I thought that helped some people out. Or have you checked with your doc.

Well, I'm still on BCP and I still haven't had a period since Feb. 11. My next appointment is in the beginning of May and I've been sick and fatigued among other things but I'm feeling better now. My anxiety had me on a tight leash, and I feel like I've been released recently and then my brother showed up on easter break so maybe I can get outside this house this weekend. Unfortunately, my father got a call this morning from one of his members that her mother might be in the process of dying so they had to leave and rush to the hospital so that's why I'm glad my brother is here, b/c I wanna do something after being so tired for most of the week and still having problems with insomnia.

When I found out I have PCOS, I refused to take any more BCP. I have wanted to be pregnant for a long time, and if I had known about my PCOS when I was younger, I may have had an unwanted pregnancy at 20, at least I wouldn't be struggling to get pregnant at 34! Also, I will not go back on BCP as they do not work to regulate my period or to help with PMS (even tho every doctor I talk to says they "should" help!). Not sure if that helps anyone... just putting in my 2 cents worth. LOL

JUN_KEATER I think it was you that told me when I first joined this team that I should rethink the BCP's and to be totally honest I am now re-thinking. My m/c is no longer regular and all I get are clots. I am hoping that if I go off the BCP's my weight will drop a bit but I am afraid of the hair loss on my head and the hair growth on my face! I know spirolactone takes forever to work and to be honest around here trying to get a family doctor appointment is next to impossible. And to find an Endo? Forgetaboudit!

Any advice? Should i do it? Argh!!!

I've been taking BCP since I was diagnosed in 2002. While I'm well aware that they are not a cure, they do help to keep me regular. Also, I'm nowhere near ready to have kids anytime soon, so I'm also using it for the birth control part. My doctor told me that losing weight can help treat the PCOS, and when I am ready to have kids we can discuss options further then.

Ive been on some form of BC since 1998 when I was diagnosed. Granted, the form has changed, but it has always been there, except for a brief 6 month stint when I didnt have insurance and couldnt get it, so before i left my Doc she suggested Vitex ... which did nothing BTW.

Actually over that time I have seen 3 different docs, and none of them have even offered me any other options other than BC, cinnamon and watching my diet.

I like the fact that she knows that bcp aren't a cure. I have nothing against bcp if they are also used for birth control. What I don't like is a doctor that pushes birth control just for regulating cycles. This is my opinion only, you have to do what is right for your own body.

I have recently become diagnosed with PCOS and my dr has put me on a BCP. She informed me before hand that it is in no way a "cure" but it will def. help regulate my periods, reduce the intense pain from cysts, get my hormones back on track ..plus I am not planning on becoming pregnant any time soon. So for now, the one I am on does seem to be working. I also know that as soon as I am off the BCP my periods will most likely go back to being irregular.
but, like i said, i chose this method because i was also looking for a type of bc.

hth!

Thanks for the info!! I was just diagnosed with PCOS about a week ago and my doctor wants to put me on birth control but I am not 100% sure that's the way I want to go.

The bottom line is, you need to do what you feel is right for you!

The books by Collette Harris ARE excellent. There is also a ton of information at soulcysters.com.

Make sure to check out your local library as well, and if you want to buy books go to half.com

I found this, and couldn't have said it better so I am cutting & pasting.

I highly recommend not taking BCP to treat PCOS. BCP tend to mask the symptoms of PCOS while not actually treating it. There has been research that shows that your PCOS actually gets worse by going on BCP. Also, BCP raise the risks of many bad things (like blood clots), which we also have a higher risk of having becasue of the PCOS. I would think long and hard and do tons of research before you decide to do that. Here's some basic PCOS info and links.

I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are generally more knowledgeable about PCOS and the correct treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of the proper treatment, so they just prescribe BCP.

The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:

1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.

2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.

3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated.

4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.

When the PCOS is treated properly, all of your symptoms may not disappear, but they should improve some. It will also be a lot easier to lose weight (and keep it off). Our bodies work against us when we try to lose weight on our own, making it nearly impossible to lose weight.

***************************************

"Birth control pills. For women who donít want to become pregnant, birth control pills can regulate menstrual cycles, reduce male hormone levels, and help to clear acne. However, the birth control pill does not cure PCOS. The menstrual cycle will become abnormal again if the pill is stopped. Women may also think about taking a pill that only has progesterone, like Provera, to regulate the menstrual cycle and prevent endometrial problems. But progesterone alone does not help reduce acne and hair growth."

BC pills aren't necessarily bad for you. If you can't control your cycles any other way, they can be the healthiest thing for you. If you are not IR and not trying to get PG then you need some way to balance hormones. Leaving them to go crazy with PCOS will cause great damage to your body. You may need to try a few brands to see which one works best for you.

I am not confused by the PCOS I am confused about the things I have been hearing about BC my doctor says to take it but I have heard a lot of woman say things about BC not being good for you.

However if you are looking for a good book there are a couple that I own that I love and I have heard a lot about them also...They are "PCOS Diet Book" and "The PCOS Protection Plan" both by colette Harris

Ok -- I have heard this a lot and I think that it is worth asking.....What is wrong with taking birthcontrol pills? I have heard it b4 and never understood it and if you have irregular periods isn't that the only medication that will help with regulating them???? I am not IR so the doctor I have wont put me on anything for it that may help with the regulation. Should I be on something like that even though I am not IR??? I think my doctor is a morone anyways but I don't want to look stupid either so what should I do???

I take low dose BC all the time. My doc thinks the only reason i have kids is the BC. His theory is that being on the BC allows my ovaries to "rest" and store up the hormone that matures an egg. Then if i miss a week of BC ( long story) The egg releases and bam i get pregnant.... But on a regular system where i haven't has BC over a long period of time i don't have any of the egg maturing hormone and therefore no periods. So I take it all the time however that is the only med i take now. I was diagnosed in 2001 and had so many problems with Metformin & Glucophage that after my daughter was born we went back to managing my symptoms with just the BC. When i am not on BC i have zero periods. It was this way even over the 18 months i took Met.

If you are taking bc pills just to control your cycle, I urge you to reconsider. If you are taking them for birth control - that's a different story. I had a doctor prescribe them to me and I refused. I am NOT going to put artifical hormones in my body if it isn't necessary. I found another doctor that was willing to work with me to control the PCOS. I started taking Metformin & within 3 months I started having regular periods (you can read more on My SparkPage). Following a low gi diet also helps tremendously!

Oh I have have to take it all the time. I've been on i since I quit nursing my son almost 4 years ago. I quit taking from June to December of 2005 and I went back to my "regular" periods. 2 week periods ever 2 weeks.

When my doctor discovered I had PCOS she gave me BC as a way to regulate my periods. Does anybody else take this and if they do, do you take it constantly? I was under the understanding that I take one pack and then quit.
