I've only maintained or lost weight on Metformin. The most I've ever gained is about 3 or 4 pounds, and its actually pretty normal for me to fluctuate that much. I have found, though, that even with metformin, I don't lose weight unless I'm exercising a lot and eating at least reasonably well. I like to tell people that it doesn't do much on its own, but it makes my body respond the way its supposed to when I do what I'm supposed to do. That was not happening before the metformin.

I have been doing low carb since mid February. I haven't lost any weight doing it. (I'm doing the original Atkins, no artificial sugar, plenty of exercise, and I average under 10 net carbs per day. I've been in phase 1 the entire time).

My doctor put me on Metformin. She suspects I have PCOS (or at least insulin resistance.) My hormone panel hasn't been assessed yet.

Did you find that without a change in diet or exercise, you initially gained weight on Metformin?

I'm not sure what metabolic cleanse my doctor was referencing. She called it a 28 day detox with supplement support. She said there was an elimination component to it. However, I've eliminated dairy (as well as all carbs except for what is in mayo, sour cream, and leafy greens), without results. She said she's on the fence about it.

Metformin does really help! Just be careful about being on a low carb diet while you are taking it, as it does lower blood sugar levels! I had to learn this the hard way.

Good luck! Glad to hear you are doing so well.

Met also helped me get regular, it also jump started my weight loss. I'm on a plateau now though, probably because I have a hard time with the low carb. I feel better when I eat fewer carbs, but they are freakin everywhere.

I'm going on an herbal cleanse for ten days later this month: no wheat, no dairy, no caffeine, no sugar. Is that the kind your doctor was talking about? Or was she thinking more along the lines of a juice cleanse?

Fingers are firmly crossed it helps you!!

I personally really love Metformin. It has made my periods regular for the first time EVER and I just feel better when I take it. Of course I also have to eat clean (low carb) and work out 5-6 days a week.

congrats on those 10 pounds.. it is hard to lose weight with PCOS!!!!

Guys, I'm super excited.

I spoke to my doctor this morning. She has a weight loss clinic where she specializes in female weight management and hormonal disorders.

I've been following her instructions to a T. She advocates low carb and I've been doing it 11 weeks now. It's the original Atkins plan- no artificial sugar, all natural, plenty of exercise, etc. I lost 5 pounds the first 10 days. I haven't really lost anything since.

She mentioned a few things.

1. She's toying with the idea of putting me on a metabolic cleanse/detox program. She's on the fence though.

2. Most importantly, she FINALLY prescribed me Metformin. I'm super excited. I'm picking it up on my lunch hour I'm so excited!!!!!!
