So I guess I don't understand all of this. I'm now having a second light period 2 1/2 weeks since my 10 1/2 day long period. Is this normal? I have only been on metformin and bc pills for just over a month.

No More Excuses!

Thank you all for your responses. I must say until this board I didn't know the cysts could be released during periods but that makes sense. I also asked around and almost every woman I know had a looong period the first time they started BC. Thanks for responding and my period is gone now lol.

In the last six years, I have only ever had my period when I was on birth control with the exception of one time a couple of years ago. One summer, I ended up in the hospital for two days because I was in so much pain and bleeding so much that I thought I was dying. After going in to the hospital, the doctor told me that I was having my period and did not believe that I had PCOS. She said to be truly diagnosed with it, I had to have an MRI and there had to be a minimum number of cysts to be considered PCOS. My PCP had diagnosed me by symptoms several years before. I could not believe what I was hearing! How could she not believe me? After looking at the scans, she decided after all that I did in fact have it. Not only was I experiencing my first period in several years, but the cysts that I had were bursting! Hence all of the awful hemorrhaging. She said that because I had lost about 40 pounds over the summer (lots of walking and racquetball), my body was becoming more healthy and that it was a good sign. Woot! Too bad though, it did not last. I was down to 240 from 280. Now I am 300, and I only get them when and if I take BC.

If you have been losing weight, it is possible that your really long and painful period is due to you becoming healthier. :-)

I never had this happen with BCP but I've had that happen with provera. I was having what I thought were normal periods.. med/light flow lasted about 6/7 days. My gyn did an ultrasound and found I had a think lining.. They put me on provera to shed it and I bled very heavy for 15 days. I'm guessing with you it's probably the same thing ..you have a thick lining and the BCP's are helping you shed it.

Before, I started Metformin there was no rhyme or reason with my cycles. I could go 4 to 6 months without one. Then, get one that last 3 weeks. Once, I started Metformin, my cycles became more regular and only lasted a couple of days.

I never missed a period for 10 years. About 8 months ago my period suddenly went from always being 7 days long with 28 days off of it to 3 days long and 25 days off of it. My doctor said that was probably when my testosterone levels got high enough to start effecting my periods. I tried an ovulation test at one point when we thought we were ready for kids and kept thinking I was doing it wrong (as if that's really that hard) because it never said I was ovulating even though I was having these light short periods.

After a high stress situation in October my hormones were so out of psynch that I missed my first period. After 3 months without one I was finally diagnosed with PCOS. I was warned that when I had my next period it would be longer and more painful because it not only is for the last 4 months but I had all these cyst that weren't able to mature into eggs and be released so I may have more than one egg drop.

After 3 weeks on birth control and only 2 on metformin I got my period and it lasted 10 1/2 days. It hurt like hell and I even stayed home from work for the first two days. I guess I could say it lasted longer than 10 1/2 days but a panty liner is all I needed for two more days after that because it was barely there.

I'm not sure if this is how it works for anyone else. I think part of my issues were because I had gone about 4 months before I finally had my period with birth control.

No More Excuses!

Only time I was on any form of BC was to STOP me from bleeding, never took the stuff outside of that and when i did take it it didn't stop the bleeding (I bleed for close to 5 solid years before it stopped - stopped because I had a hysterectomy)

For the most part I used to get my periods every 25 days and they would last 3-6 days. Every month like clock work. They were painful I did have multiple pcos sympthoms though. So long story short I was put on BC pills for the first time last month. Well my period came with the white pills but then it stayed and stayed. This morning I thought oh wow its finally gone. I just went to the restroom and when I wiped sure enough there was blood! Omg when will it end. Has this happened to anyone the first time they started BC?
