I've tried a few different options. For me sticking to around 60 grams of gross carbs, from fruit and vegetables, dairy etc and no grains seems to work well for me. At first I had to be more strict, but I seem to be able to break the rules more often now without ruining my progress.
I have done the 2 week time period on South Beach where I hardly had any carbs and I was successful in loosing some weight on that, but I didn't have the strength to workout - I felt lighheaded and exhausted all the time.
Exercise is important to me, so I am trying to figure out how many I should add to still loose weight but have enough energy for my workouts.

I have done no-carbs for two weeks, but that is my limit usually. I will often go low-carb, usually eating only 1 serving of grain a day. It can be hard, but it is the only way I have found that I lose weight effectively.
If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.
